Teachers, need help planning the first day of school? I hate cheesy name games and refuse to make the worst first impression by just reading a syllabus to my high school students. I love how silly and playful you are! I also love your "realness". I watched the video fully and pulled up another tab to check out your website. I also love the fact that you said $FREE.99 for the worksheets and that you are GENUINELY willing to help. I subscribed and am about to check you out fully. I am sure I won't be disappointed!! THanks so much for being you, and helping us to be better US!

Hmm...not sure, but I am attracted to bright ideas...
Carissa Parkhurst (26 days ago)
Thank you for offering up your hard work and ingenuity for free. I am going to try this out when I get all new kids in art class second semester. I was wondering if you offered this as an editable document as well? I just want to tweak some questions on the presentation to make them better for visual arts class.
Laura Randazzo (26 days ago)
So glad these materials might work for your students, Carissa! Unfortunately, I used Adobe InDesign to create these items and there’s no way to convert an Adobe file into an editable MS Word or Google Docs formatted file. Apparently, those software companies don’t want to play nicely. Sorry about that.
Lia Niadas (1 month ago)
Thank . you, Laura. I used it with my 9th graders and it worked fine! They were not nervous at all and shared their views.
Laura Randazzo (1 month ago)
Terrific, Lia! So glad to know this worked for you and your kiddos. :)
Naty Dia (1 month ago)
Laura, those eyes scream : "I'M A TEACHER!!!!" :p Tomorrow is day of one of Back To School. This activity sounds interesting and fruitful, yet would work best with native speakers. Any tips on how to make such activities roll with non-natives? My students study English as a third language. I will check all of your videos to see if there are any lesson plan samples. Thanks for everything Laura :)
Laura Randazzo (1 month ago)
Hey, Naty Dia! For your ELL kids, you might try a really simplified version of the activity. It's hard to know, though, since I'm not sure how much English they'll arrive knowing. Maybe save this stations idea to use with content a few weeks from now, once you have a better grasp on the language level and can arrange kids into helpful groupings. I'm not a language acquisition specialist, so I'm a bit out of my lane with this one. Get some sleep! Monday morning will be here soon. ;)

Trying this today on the 1st day of school with 9th, 10th, and 11th graders! Thank you for the resources! As a fairly new teacher, it's awesome to have veterans so willing to give resources!

Tried this today during our first day of school as an 11th grade chemistry teacher. My students loved it!!! The students seemed to like the effective teacher and helpful classmate prompts. I added in a prompt asking students what the most important classroom community rule is. A great discussion followed about respect in the classroom. Thank you very much for the idea!!!

As a high school student, here are my two cents. The sticky note questions are good for the teacher to know, but I can easily guess the most common answers. If my teacher did this I would feel it is too similar to other questions teachers ask and I'd be bored all hour. Second, I'm usually against those get-to-know-you worksheets, but this one is cool. Only 1 over-used question, and overall a good resource for teachers.
Laura Randazzo (2 months ago)
Thanks for watching and for your thoughtful feedback, Shelley. I'd love to know what other sentence starters could be added/changed to make the activity even more dynamic? Teach me! :)

Monique Hernandez (2 months ago)
I float this year. Sharing 3 classrooms! Trying to figure out how to use this with limited time for set up and take down. When your room isn't your own and you are not going to be in one room for all your classes...tough. So love the idea though. Laura is always amazing!
Laura Randazzo (2 months ago)
Well, of course, Monique! Helping my teacher peeps is what I do. :) And, yes, that schedule is w-a-c-k-y. I mean, what can we really do with only 17 minutes? That's just silly. Hang in there! Things will level out soon.
Monique Hernandez (2 months ago)
Oh wow! You replied to my comment! I have chosen 4 questions and will have them take their sticky note answers to the white board (divide the board into 4 corresponding sections) and then we will discuss as a class! Your suggestion with the timer and their help, I will use throughout the year. See the added difficulty is 1st day our classes are 17 minutes long. Second day 20! But I got this, lady! Oh by the way, you are my teacher hero! I love your enthusiasm and your TpT store.
Laura Randazzo (2 months ago)
Ugh, Monique. Three classrooms?!! Yeah, that's going to be an extra challenge all year long, I'm afraid. I'd actually ask the kids for help in setting up and tearing down activities like these stations. Be straight with your classes and tell them you need a little grace and a little help. Take the first two minutes of class (I'd even set a timer and turn it into a race/game) and have the kids set up the eight stations. Then, get on with the show. You're going to be dealing with this situation all year long, so you might as well acknowledge the set-up problem on Day 1 and enlist their support. Keep on rollin', my friend. :)
Barbara Vassallo (2 months ago)
I really want to use this activity. I subscribed but cannot figure out how to download/access into my chrome book so I can use it with my google program????? Help please - this idea sounds awesome!
Laura Randazzo (2 months ago)
Hi, Barbara, thanks for checking in with me. I messaged you over on the TpT shop, but now I see from this message that you're working with a Chromebook. You'll want to check your downloads folder and then import the PDFs into your Google Drive. If you're not sure how to do this, the best way is to search YouTube for "how to download files to a Chromebook." I'm hopeful you can find a tutorial that'll walk you through the process. Hang in there!
Tammy Sherman (2 months ago)
I did this activity with my 5th graders today and it was powerful! I changed the first slide since my students are a few years from graduation. I asked my students what problem they would like to solve. Many of my students, (10-11 year olds) wrote school shootings. We live in a fairly rural area with very little violence, so it was very surprising to me that my students have this worry. I absolutely loved the slide about teacher effectiveness. The majority of my students want to be academically challenged, but in a fun way. I can't thank you enough for this great community building activity! This is way better than traditional ice breakers.
Laura Randazzo (2 months ago)
What a telling moment about what's on our kids' minds, Tammy. Heck, it's on all of our minds, right? Glad you were able to adapt the materials and launch the year in such a meaningful way.
Kendra Leier (2 months ago)
Oh this is so great! You speak to my style of teaching so much! I think I'll change out the first question, but I love everything else about this! I teach French for grades 1-8 and I think my older students would really enjoy this.
Laura Randazzo (2 months ago)
Kendra Leier Très bien! Tellement content que tu aies trouvé cette idée. :)

Laura Randazzo (2 months ago)
MsLazyllama101 Welcome to the h.s. party! Glad you’re here. :)
Hey Laura, If you didn't start school yet, could you please record the first day using this strategy? I prefer to see it in action PLEASE!!! :)
Laura Randazzo (2 months ago)
Hey, Kymberrlie, I agree that'd be an amazing video, but my contract (this year I'm building curriculum and teaching classes as an "education specialist" for our library) actually prohibits me from filming/posting anything done at work. Apparently, my work life and social media life have to be entirely separate. I'm not sure how other teachers are able to film on campus and show students' faces and all that (maybe they get signed releases from administration and all parents?), but that's off limits for me. So sorry to disappoint, but I gotta keep my day job. ;)

thank you so much for sharing this idea! i plan to modify and use it with my upper-elementary students. GRATEFUL for a great alternative to the usual (dreadful) ice-breakers!
b carey (2 months ago)
sure! haven't finalized my plan, but here are some ideas – The most helpful teachers are the ones who ___________. The most helpful classmates are the ones who __________. The thing I most excel at in school is ____________. One thing I want to get better at in school is ____________. In order to do my best writing, I need ____________. In order to really understand what I’m reading, I need _________. In order to do my best work in math, I need ___________. By the end of fifth grade, I hope to ____________. One thing I wonder about fifth grade is ____________. One thing I hope to learn more about in fifth grade is __________. One thing I hope will happen in fifth grade is ____________.

This was really informative. We had CRISS training in our district and they called this activity a carousel. I've been doing carousel activities all year with my fourth graders, but it did not occur to me to use it for the first day of class. I will come up with some sentence starters appropriate to fourth graders and see how it goes. Thank you so much for sharing this nifty idea.

_Laney _ (5 months ago)
As a student, freshman, I find this a very nice icebreaker! I love it, and only hope my future teachers do something along these lines. I also find this very appealing, because I would like to be a future ELA, Social Studies, or Human Anatomy teacher. So, it’s awesome to think someday I may be having to plan stuff, like lessons and icebreakers. Thank you.
Laura Randazzo (4 months ago)
I think it would be great to have you in our profession, Love and music Draws. I mean, a freshman who's already watching teacher videos? I think you might've found your path. :) (Sorry it's taken me so long to respond, but it's finally summer and I finally have time to catch up with all of these YouTube comments.)

Diego Sandoval (7 months ago)
This one’s interesting, but I honestly don’t think it might be proper for students with a very basic level of English.
Laura Randazzo (7 months ago)
Diego Sandoval Indeed, Diego. This is a lesson for regular English classes and certainly would be problematic for the first day of ELL or ELD classes. Maybe save the technique for different content later in the year? Thanks for watching!
For Teachers (8 months ago)
I am guilty of always putting my class in groups of 4. I’m going to try groups of 3 today instead and see how it goes! I teach younger so generally they’re more keen and eager to please but I do find I get some that sit back and let the others get the bulk done. Thanks for sharing this advice. I really like how your humour comes across in the video! Any tips for a newbie to the YouTube teacher world? I’m enjoying creating content but I feel like there is SO much to learn! Katie ☺️

Laura Randazzo Actually id be much more likely to be able to make a cup of green tea as I live in Hong Kong now! I work in an international school out here. I’m only in the UK a couple of weeks each year! So if you swing by Asia let me know. I’d happily show you around anywhere in Hong Kong! 😊

KClark (1 year ago)
I love this! I saw in the freebie that you recommend two minutes for discussion at each station. How long do you usually set aside for this whole activity, start to finish?
Laura Randazzo (1 year ago)
You're welcome. :)
KClark (1 year ago)
Yes, that helps so much! Thank you!

It really depends on your class size, KClark. For a standard class of 30-34 kids, plan on 40-to-45 minutes. You also can trim for time by having fewer sentence stations overall and/or trimming the discussion time, as needed. Also, the worksheet could be used on the next day or solely as homework if your kids are chatty and run long. Hope this helps!

I just had my freshmen orientation yesterday and they made us do icebreakers. It was so awkward!! I made people laugh but I wish they did this idea instead :)

Jelly Bellie Ah yes, Jelly, I'm afraid 'tis the season for icebreakers. Like you, I always play along but look to score some laughs, too. Congrats on launching your freshman year!

Thank you, this sounds fun. Im having trouble finding the link for the attachments you mention. are they on your website? Im an art teacher, and while youd think having them start drawing their names or color portfolios or something would be good, I might use this .... This is my FIRST time with 8th graders- Im used to little ones- k- 3.... and now my schools have changed- Im a traveling art tracher.. anyway I have an 8th grade class and Im pretty nervous 30 of them and not sure how to do the first day. or maybe I should just dive into art- some will love it but then there are the ones who dont like to work. Anyway it's a hard demographic and I have them everyday and dont want them getting burned out I guess with the art, having hard time finding first day of art with 8th graders!
