We were all thinking it, but you had to put it out there.
John Armstrong (2 months ago)
In order to find the centers of those planks, you would use a compass and perpendicular bisectors between the points. Their intersection would be the center of your circle. You could then find it for the two outside points and verify that it actually is a circle.

Looks are one thing, but how does she handle. There is first and secondary stability, that you need to take into account. You know what they say... “The pretty one are crazy as heck”

Your video tutorial is great, I expect that I can also make my own Dory.

On this rainy Friday early afternoon I had the pleasure of meeting Louis. Like you would expect, if you've been drawn to his videos by his talent as a Craftsman on all things "wood boats", well let me share a bit. As a general contractor doing cabinetry for 25 plus years I ended up in a difficult place. At 55 years old I had few options in life, so I thought! Not to be to sappy, his voice, demener and passion has inpacted me unmeasurably. I guess what I'm trying to say is, watching a man do his trade in the respectful an honest way has brought me back trying to do the same in my work as he does in his. Thanks Greg

Hey Lou, noticing the block plane upon which you're tweaking the pencil point has an adjustable mouth. Neat. I haven't scored one of those yet (all fixed so far), but I did pick up an old circular saw yesterday-JUST because of your inspiration. As much as I love hand tools, great long rips by human power are no fun at all. Working on my tool kit for boat construction. So. It's August now. When does the show start?
Reginald Farrell (1 year ago)
Lou! Lou! Lou!
Stephen Baxter (1 year ago)
Any idea when this new series will start?

OK my fix as well! How long do we have to wait between clips? I have been opening you tube every day for a week now.
Philip Gee (1 year ago)
OK Cool, I look forward to it! Thanks for responding! I am thinking on starting a project of my own building the Arch Davis Jiffy V22 which I am thinking of recording in stages.

Hello Louis, in reference to mixing epoxy. I will take a piece of coat hanger, the heaviest gauge. I then take a 10 inch piece of that heavy wire, and bend it into a triangle on one side, 1" x 1" X 1", it kinda looks like a mini hanger at the bottom. I might bend the other end over on itself then put it in the drill. This tool will blend the epoxy thoroughly in a very short time. FYI

Thirty six video series. We're so happy.

Hi Louis, will it be a sailing dory? Looking forward to seeing your design.
Petter Andersson (1 year ago)
It would be kinda cool to have some drawings to down load so maybe it would be easier and more fun to follow along. Also maybe some people would like a full drawing plan and build along. You might sell just a couple. lol
Working on it.

I've been waiting. So happy this next series is getting underway, and did you hear near the end,  Lou is going to maybe do a video on the Herreshoff .  Someone else said it felt like Christmas, I agree. My favorite show is back on the air!
papajrd (1 year ago)
Lou, I very much enjoyed your first TotalBoat series, and am looking forward to this one, as well. I have no experience with the type boats you are building, and also have no knowledge of nautical or boat-building terms, words, and phrases. Therefore, it is difficult for me to keep up with your use of such terms-of-art as, "rocker", "sheer", "knuckle", "duck gunning", etc. I think there are probably other viewers who are similarly "terminology deficient". It would both helpful, and very interesting to have you define and elaborate on the specialized words that are so much a part of your vocabulary, but which are foreign to the newbies, such as I. I enjoy your work very much. Thank you for considering this request.
Forrest Addy (1 year ago)
You're going at this dory project in a well established, old-school way. Have you considered illustrating the preliminaries to the logging process with a half model with sectioning and scaling, maybe even a simple tank test?

Well you sir are a inspiration. I am 59 and I would like to build a boat when I retire. Watching you break down the steps makes it seem achievable. I hope I can do it with your attention to detail, which is what I think makes it all worth it. Thanks for your videos.

I have a quick question: Will this dory feature a traditional "Leg of Mutton" rigging? Best Regards Daucke

Fel Reb (1 year ago)
What is the significance of the planks being distributed on a radius, and of finding the centre? Is it to facilitate construction? Is it an aesthetic consideration? Does the radial arrangement repeat itself at the other stations as well or only at maximum beam?
Fel Reb (1 year ago)
Or is it that if you draw the lap lines according to straight line diagonals the bevel on the planks can be constant and therefore ripped on a table saw as opposed to planing each plank individually?

JB Lewis (1 year ago)
Did Louis just tip us off to the *next* series, too??
AL bert K (1 year ago)
Louis glad your back ! Excited on this nice choice of build! I too worked in shipyards as I grew up although they were much bigger! I appreciate the small boats more! I understand how to read blueprints and your concepts, however I feel a few nubes may get lost a bit quicker. Perhaps you can explain the concept of the architectural lines and use your half model to explain. This may draw a clearer picture for everyone. since many may get lost in those prints with all the lines. ? just my .02 cents. Looking forward to the series!
papajrd (1 year ago)
Yes, by all means, explanations would be most appreciated.

Louis, we can't wait for your new season. Interesting comments on dory design variations, Perhaps it would be nice to give a nod to John Gardner and the Dory Book for the drawings you're using?
Just love the way you explain things!

Hey Lou! Great video! What is the significance of the planks being distributed on a radius, and of finding the centre? Is this a requirement for the proper distribution of the planks or an aesthetic consideration? Does the radial arrangement repeat itself as a design requirement at the other stations as well or only at the stem and transom? Thanks and all the best...
Joe Brown (1 year ago)
Lou, have you ever had occasion to express your theory of what happened to Joshua Slocum? I read that most of his material used to rebuild his boat, the Spray, was green lumber that he milled himself. Would his material fail after only a few years of sailing? I would like to believe that he became ill and unable to handle the boat in rough weather. Do you have any thoughts?
Lether (1 year ago)
Of course its a dory. My father spent his childhood and teens fishing Cod in a dory for his father. Can't get any better for me. From the old days when your children were your own cheap labour force. Compared to now ...
AndyB (1 year ago)
YEAH!! 4 thumbs down? A curse upon the 4 of you and all who join your ranks.!! :-)
wisedupearly (1 year ago)
Every "politician" that wants to enter Congress should be required to build a small boat like this. Totally impractical? Probably. Just feel that watching Lou in his shop is another education that has long been missing in America.
