This would be a great hack for if your car has a rear passenger DVD system with AV inputs, if in case you fail to make it home in time to catch your favorite TV shows, you can pull over to a safe parking spot, get in the back seat and turn on the DVD screen and select the AV input.
Flowermanvista (25 days ago)
Problem with that is that ATSC (the United States' digital TV standard) and many other DTV systems around the world will not work right if the antenna is moving relative to the broadcasting antenna - the receiving antenna must be stationary or moving very slowly for that to work.
Travis Miller (1 month ago)
This works with most Electronics the only difference with everything is the power supplies on the inside rather than the outside Unfortunately they are usually so integrated that they have multiple different voltage outputs. With that can still be worked around

I think the government should have never have forced an analog-digital TV conversion. The government basically subsidized TV companies when they sent out coupons to buy digital converter boxes. Those who want to get TV on the go with an analog TV without having to buy apps on their phone should be able to do so.

I like it but I wonder to what coil you connected the black and red cable
this is awesome! thanks! if you don't have a headphone style jack on your watchman then all you have to do is still one end of a coaxial cable and wrap it around the telescoping antenna:)

what if i take apart my tv, remove the analog tuner, and put the thing insde. thats better.
Flowermanvista (25 days ago)
If you knew your way around a CRT TV, and could hack apart the two devices to connect the converter box directly to the internal RGB inputs on the TV, and could rewire the channel and power buttons so they did as needed, you could theoretically do that. It probably wouldn't be that hard for an electronics nerd to pull off.

Then you use the RF out connector. It's right next to the antenna connector, and it outputs a RF signal for analog TVs.

Jonny Pridgen (3 years ago)
I need to make an A/V cord for my Casio portable TV. On the TRS 3.5mm plug, is the video on the tip or the ring?
Noevilea (3 years ago)
I know you are trying to help people out by making this more versatile but many people will not know that the switch mode power supply you soldered to can contain residual voltages up to 380 volts whether they are plugged in or not. Those electrolytic capacitors regularly store the same voltages or close to that in which they are marked. This is potentially life threatening so they need to be discharged before any soldering or mods are done.
Noevilea (3 years ago)
+Bri G. Ok I see what you mean now. The term Frame worker just had me a little confuzzled - lol
Bri G. (3 years ago)
+Noevilea The Main Frame inside the central office is where the underground cables come in from the field. it's a large metal structure so we call it the Main Frame. Jumpers have to be run from the cable & pairs from the field side to the switching equip. that provides the dial tone.  A Ring generator inside the CO provides the ringing current that rings the bell inside your telephone set. Dail tone comes from the switching equipment & talk battery (-48v) from lead acid batteries. During a power outage a automatic line switch (it looks like a huge circuit breaker) engages and automatically starts up a emergency desiel generator. The generator provides power for the rectifiers which keep the batteries charged & the batteries provide -48v & 130v for switching equipment. Most of our central offices have enough fuel to keep the generators going for 2-5 days during a power outage.
Noevilea (3 years ago)
+Bri G. Are you talking about capacitors ? Not sure what the ring generator is as terminology may be different here. Or are you referring to something like a toroidal transformer of some sort being used as a voltage multiplier with the secondary windings wired in series. What`s a frame worker ? Is that someone that assembles the 19 inch racking systems that holds all the servers, hard drives splitters etc ? I was building a Variable Speed Drive for running conveyor systems from and dead stop out on the mines. The protect circuit had a number of 1000 volt 10,000 micro farad electrolytics. I started up part of the circuit before finishing one day just so I could take a few preliminary measurements. Next morning I reached in with the assumption that were all discharged - I was wrong. There were 36 of these ( 12 on each phase ) designed to protect the driver circuit from back EMF in the lines feeding into the driver and blowing it. I reached in an got around 150 volt shock then accidentally put my screwdriver across another phase and had sparks fly at my face just as if you had shorted a 12 volt care battery. This is what happens when others come and interfere and disconnect the 2.4k.ohm resistors used as a bleed circuit CHEERS
Bri G. (3 years ago)
+Noevilea I used to be a frameworker at AT&T, connecting lines. I touched one of those ring generator pairs, boy that really would wake you up.
Noevilea (3 years ago)
+Bri G. I never got that but I really don't like the shocks so am extra careful these days. The tiniest circuit can hold a lot of voltage that will get you going better than a coffee
Tyson P (3 years ago)
Cool video..Thank you.It works
Jimmy (3 years ago)
This was useless even in 2009. You could have just bought a USB digital TV tuner, plugged it into a used ebay laptop and get the same thing but with a larger LCD screen of the laptop. Not to mention the portability.
Jimmy (3 years ago)
+LarkLandon Enterprises (d4RKL4RK) What was the point then if it wasn't to make a cheap portable digital TV? Was it to show us how to convert small AC powered electronics to run off battery? In this case, a giant battery larger than the converter box itself? If the point was to show us how to make a cheap portable digital TV for emergencies and such (which is what the guy in the video says), even in 2009 a used ebay windows XP laptop/netbook could have been bought for under $50 and a $20 USB TV tuner put on it and you have a device that does the same function for about the same price but smaller, more portable and with a larger display. So which point did you think the video was trying to make?
The Zefside (3 years ago)
+Jay Man Yep. That's not really the point here sparky...
Jimmy (3 years ago)
+Noevilea Are you aware that the digital TV signal for an antenna (ATSC) and for digital cable TV (QAM) are completely different? Also, the signal differs by country. For example, Europe uses DVB-T instead of ATSC which is used in the United States. It is possible that your tuner works with your PC like you said but you didn't set up the signal right for cable or antenna or it is the wrong tuner for your area which is why you can't pick up any channels. Most tuners will have multiple signal types, though, for both cable and antenna. Typically, the antenna signal type that the tuner uses will be the one that is used in the country it is sold in. So, if you bought the tuner from a European country, it will be DVB-T and it won't work in the United States.  Another possibility is that your tuner isn't digital. If it is an NTSC or PAL tuner, it is the old analog TV signal and won't pick anything up because nobody broadcasts in analog anymore.
Garras Porgratix (3 years ago)
You must be too poor to afford a new tv that costs only 20 bucks more.
volarecantare (3 years ago)
Who says digital converter? That's a digital receiver, like any other receiver. It just tunes digital signals. Calling that device a converter just because it has analogue A/V output is ridiculous. There were digital receivers before digital A/V outputs. I had them since 2004.
Noevilea (3 years ago)
+volarecantare lol - I saw one getting thrown out about 2 weeks ago.
volarecantare (3 years ago)
+Noevilea If you live in a house, get a dish. It gives you more variety and independence. Even with an expensive dish set you spend less money than cable.
Noevilea (3 years ago)
+volarecantare I haven't done anything with satellite myself however I do have the main receiver and amp set up for one here. As well as a book on hacking as my mothers husband used to program his own cards for use in a 2 card receiver system while he was alive. I just never really got involved myself. Got a direction finder here as well. Looks just like a SWR meter just smaller. Probably spent around $30,000 on components and other stuff over the last 2 - 3 years. I started electronics at the age of 12 and then went on to an apprenticeship while servicing as a second job. I used to service the original AT and XT IBM computers down to component level when there was no on board video. LOL the old CGA and VGA 8 bit cards were worth between $600 - $1500 bucks. Now even the most basic of laptops have something like a bare minimum of a Radeon 9000 series built on board. Pretty interesting to see the actual components progress over the years. I`ve currently got a small container that has around 8000 SMD resistors lol nearly fits into my pocket. They are a read SOB to solder though. I just cant really get into gaming.
volarecantare (3 years ago)
+Noevilea No, I just have digital satellite-TV since 2004. I also buy and set up stuff for my dish myself.
Noevilea (3 years ago)
+volarecantare 2 I have here are labelled DVB but another is DVT. I also have 4 USB digital tuners and 2 are labelled DVT while the other 2 are DVB. I use the terminology each individual component is labelled as because if I start changing labels the people I talk to get lost in the conversation. Sometimes its hard enough trying to explain things as it is without the added confusion. Do you have any technical electronics training yourself ? CHEERS

Thanks for this awesome idea. I'm about to take my pc speakers and hack them to work on my dune buggy. I've found they run on 14.6 volts so with a regulator will prevent it from being underpowered. Why? Because I'm too bored and don't want to buy a portable stereo or Bluetooth speaker.
Xcorgi (4 years ago)
Think of how many of these portable analog TVs that are now in land fills because people didn't know about this hack before throwing them out.
henshooten (4 years ago)
First show us how to make a small pocket digital TV ariel and then you can say it's truly portable Kipkay otherwise a large outdoor antenna would be needed which renders the portability somewhat useless
mattcintosh2 (3 years ago)
Depends where you are located...I live about 10 miles from the broadcasting antennas (I can see them from my front yard) a 3 ft. piece of coax can work in a pinch as an antenna
nbarrager Productions (4 years ago)
i have a sony watchman that i bought at a junk store that has no av input, how could i hook that up to an adapter?
Noevilea (3 years ago)
+nbarrager Productions some VCR`s wont turn on properly if the antenna signal strength is too low. They sort of go into a sleep mode the same as many TV`s.
mattcintosh2 (3 years ago)
+nbarrager Productions Did you hit the TV/VCR button? There is times when the coax out is just a passthrough. And due to sensitivity, there are chances it may not work. I used a RCA 800B1 converter and a CRT Sony Watchman
nbarrager Productions (3 years ago)
+mattcintosh2 I don't have a converter box, but I tried it with a VCR from the 90s and it didn't work
mattcintosh2 (3 years ago)
+nbarrager Productions  I tried it and it does work, but the picture is a little fuzzy. You might be able to get a better image if you lengthen/shorten the antenna or touch in different places on the paperclip

Never heard of Solar Charging???
Noevilea (3 years ago)
+tapetwo solar panel is a Sunsei model SE400 and the battery is a Yacht model CTX20L-BS 12volt 18 amp hour from a Harley. I bought 20 x $5 led torches then removed the leds and wired then in a series and parallel network. Operation voltage of the leds is 4.5 volts so I wired 18 in 6 parallel banks of 3 in series. The lights are actually wired through a relay so that when power fails I have automatic emergency lighting.  I flick a switch to operate the tv manually. TV is a 10 inch Conia LCD HD with a built in dvd player. CHEERS
Noevilea (3 years ago)
+TJ-TG  I run led lights and a digital TV off a 12 volt battery for around 16 hours during blackouts. Many people have knocked on my door wondering why I still have power. This is charged by a regulated 15 volt 6 watt solar panel when not in use and all I have to do is flick a switch.
TJ-TG (3 years ago)
Solar can barely keep a 1.5v LED online all nigh, nevermind a 12v "24/7" tv
Hassan Al-jadooa (4 years ago)
where do i get them
John Doe (4 years ago)
Hey, I have one of those. =P
Anthony Clemons (4 years ago)
you will probably want a DC to DC 12v converter as opposed to just straight connection to the board. Car alternators put out about 14V, while that wont hurt in many applications, in this case, since your plugging directly into the motherboard, you may damage one of those IC's
Lauro Moreno (4 years ago)
if you have a car cant you just use a inverter
Elliot Lockett (2 years ago)
Yep
Lauro Moreno (2 years ago)

It sure is clever what is be done here but how many stations are you gonna tune into while camping?  What are they gonna play that is any good?  Your not gonna get many stations and if so not clear.
TBustah (4 years ago)
It just depends on where you camp. Some really good camping spots are fairly close to large cities with their own TV stations. I took one of these things on a couple trips to Lake Tahoe several years ago, and Reno's network channels came in pretty clearly.  Their Fox affiliate alone was a treasure trove of reruns including "The Simpsons" and "The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air".  There are probably spots in the Bay Area that are comparable.
