Autozone engine light scans suck. They get the cheapest scan tools, insert it and ends up giving you false codes. Just like scott, might as well buy our own good scan tool.
livewireOr (1 year ago)
At least Autozone has their $20 discount right in the store. Most of my local parts store try to get you to buy online........If I was going to purchase online, I'd go to a site like rockauto and get a better deal.

Nice Video! Sorry for butting in, I would appreciate your opinion. Have you thought about - Tarbbatigan Cars Rehabilitation Tip (do a google search)? It is a smashing exclusive guide for learning how to repair your car the easy way without the normal expense. Ive heard some great things about it and my mate at very last got cool results with it.
Kamel (1 year ago)
my objection to autozone is every single one i've been to the store clerks try to give me advice i don't want, and almost even force it on me. i appreciate them wanting to help out, but i didn't ask for their input. also, no offense to them, but if they really knew the amount they think they do, they would have a better job. i base this on visiting numerous autozones

I have an accord 2001 and it didn't start, called tow truck, the guy hit a plate or something under the car and then the car started. He said it might be filled with junk. What could be the issue? I have a new battery and starter only 1 year old.
Scotty Kilmer (1 year ago)
there are no plates that would do that, I would assume he hit the starter and it worked. realize you probably put on a rebuilt starter and they are often crap
Nwannaa Umuigbo (1 year ago)
Hi Scotty, Could you please tell me where to locate fuel pump relay on Accord 2010. thanks for all you do and by the way do you take in vehicles for service - I live here in Houston area.
Scotty Kilmer (1 year ago)
I do work on cars in downtown houston. E mail scottykilmer@gmail.com for appts M-F. As for the relay, it uses a combo power relay for the fuel pump which is above the driver's left knee hidden inside the dash, VERY hard to access

Your expensive tools in the garage are the reason i don't intend to repair my own car. I only want to diagnose it to know if i have to go to the Mercedes or a cheaper auto service to make repairs. I mentioned on one of your videos that my wife's 1990 Cougar suddenly developed a burning smell inside. I found the problem almost by accident, after noticing that the brake lights no longer turned off. There was a broken spring switch in the brake light/ignition switch attached to the brake pedal. This broken switch led to the brake lights staying on, and the third light under the rear window over heated, leading to melting of the plastic, and scorching. It apparently does not have enough ventilation for anything but occasional application of the brake lights. Just to be safe, I replaced the bulbs (they had overheated in the small space and actually drooped, touching the plastic housing) with low heat LED lights. Replaced the broken switch with a new one. Problem solved. I have never seen this happen before.

does it hurt my car to drive in 2nd or low gear that might be a dumb question but I'm dumb

I wonder if in some crazy way many people don't for some reason return the tools and auto zone charges them and in this way autozone "sells" the expensive tools considering that many people just are careless.

I dont see 100,000 dollars in tools in there.......
Scotty Kilmer (2 years ago)
+Ricky Dietsch I've been working on cars 48 years, so I've collected a lot of tools over time. AND, being rather famous, companies are always sending me expensive tools and scanners in the hope I use them in my repair videos as I have over 120 million views so far and they want part of the action. Some of those tools I've never even used yet.
Ricky Dietsch (2 years ago)
I manage a big fleet of vehicles from Honda civics and the owners Mercedes to bucket trucks and backhoes etc.. I maybe have 60,000 is tools

WRX Gabe (2 years ago)
for all those that say autozone is crap... remember this: your dealerships use autozone parts.... alot and you might not even notice. so even if you don't do it yourself and rely on your dealership items.. you pretty much use autozone/O'Reillys etc. parts
ichris12 (2 years ago)
Hey Scotty the only thing that sucks about California is autozone isn't allowed to hook up a scanner to your car because they take work from shops but it's kinda dumb because a shop does it free too!
Mordithar (2 years ago)
They put my battery in for free a few months ago!
jdmeg6118 (2 years ago)
I get everything at AutoZone because of the better warranty.
Don Quixote (2 years ago)
Autozone is a huge piece of shit, they're the walmart of the auto parts world please dont support those assholes, i could on all day, take your business to Oreillys or Napa.
MrMatte0000 (2 years ago)
I work at AutoZone, this video makes me cringe. We can have two people working one day. We have to handle all of the phone calls, store customers, and then all of the people that need batteries installed, codes read, and parts tested. It is a highly stressful thing. I wish they'd allow stores enough hours to have enough people working at once to support the demand of the customers, which unfortunately, they do not seem to care about, which reflects badly on the store, and the chain as a whole. Keep that in mind when you're dealing with parts stores, as I'm sure other chains are in a similar state as well.
EJH10154 (1 year ago)
I prefer Advance Auto Parts over AutoZone, way more discounts from their website just as long as you verify that the part you need is correct. Usually not a crowd to deal with, in my opinion they have some better variety of parts than AutoZone. Most part stores however do not pay a lot, so most associates just come and go, thus short handedness. Other reasons follow but don't need to go into details.
Fredie Guerra (1 year ago)
that's why I go Advance Auto Parts, they haven't been around my area as long as the others and don't have a huge customer base. There stores are well staffed and I don't think I've ever had to wait in line. Just walk in and associates are readily available. Though I will say AutoZone usually has a greater inventory of parts.
Geoff Dearth (2 years ago)
+Scotty Kilmer I worked in Enco and Standard stations in '70 and '71. Sometimes people would want the air in their tires checked even when they didn't buy gas.
Brythespy (2 years ago)
I'm going to assume you're unexperienced in life, or hasn't had a real job before. You can't just tell your boss to fuck off when you run into a stressful situation at work. That's what the fuck work is. It's hard, and if you expect to get paid you deal with it.

Zaid The World (2 years ago)
hey scotty love your channel! I was debating / i have a 2000 ford tarsus that runs great but unfortunately the transmission has begun to slip. Im planning on flushing the tranny oil and replacing the filter and adding the lucus oil you recommended but hey should i do all that or just sell the car!
Scotty Kilmer (2 years ago)
+flo2nasty787 I would just remove one quart fluid and put one quart lucas in there and see. if it works, drive it a while. If not, sell it
hugeslacker (2 years ago)
If I'm in a bind I do prefer autozone over pepboys and advance auto... I worry about getting car quest parts from them. But with an amazon prime account I can get most parts half price shipped here in 2 days sometimes 1.
colby purkeypile (2 years ago)
Hey scotty does autozone rent out ac gauges?
MrMatte0000 (2 years ago)

Brythespy (2 years ago)
+colby purkeypile That's right! Here's a link if you're interested http://www.autozone.com/loan-a-tools/fuel-pump-diagnostic-kit
colby purkeypile (2 years ago)
you have to pay 150$ to rent it? +Brythespy
Brythespy (2 years ago)
+colby purkeypile Actual CSM of autozone here (gray shirt)... yes we do rent them out lol. 150$ deposit that you get back when you return it. Depending on location, the store manager, and the guy that is helping you, we'll even help put in frion. It's against store policy for sure, but hey if it's something simple to us to do why the heck not?
MrMatte0000 (2 years ago)
+colby purkeypile Nope.
Ronald de Rooij (2 years ago)
Good commercial. But remember, nothing is really for free in this world. You somehow pay for it, one way or the other. And that's OK, I am not critical, just saying.
wicious (2 months ago)
Free things exist. You can use the tools for free. That's free. Free at point of service. They aren't free to the shop. But they never claimed they were.
Jimmy Sapien (1 year ago)
The AIR we breathe is free.
Ronald de Rooij (2 years ago)
+Zastavan Yep, you got it.
Zastavan (2 years ago)
+Ronald de Rooij Its an encouragement to get you in the store so that you will buy other stuff. Alot of shops regardless of the industry, do this type of testing. Its to stay competitive.
Ronald de Rooij (2 years ago)
+Brythespy Nothing is free in this world. You pay for it indirectly in higher prices for other products, or maybe the personnel pays for it in lower wages. But nothing is for free.
Kevin Ping (2 years ago)
So how the hell do they make money?
ChargerBullet (2 years ago)
+Kevin Ping Not very likely. I do that lots of times (just show up and have them recharge my battery or buy parts like springs from elsewhere and just go in to borrow a spring compressor tool), but the majority of people just buy the parts they need from there. The eggheads at their office figured this stuff out already and know it works out in their favor.
Kevin Ping (2 years ago)
What is the likelihood of the customers showing up for free tools and service then run off to nearby Costco or Amazon for cheap battery? It is not a hard concept to grasp.
ChargerBullet (2 years ago)
+Kevin Ping They still charge for parts. They'll check batteries, starters, etc. for free but if you need a new one they'll sell them to you. It's not a hard concept to grasp.
Ronald de Rooij (2 years ago)
+Kevin Ping Well, how do you think? Hiring morons will keep the cost low, and putting a percentage on the price of some articles will boost income. Nothing for nothing in this world I Always say.
The0to1smell (2 years ago)
Walmart and autozone are my stores and circle K.that all I need in life
Ivan Braginski (2 years ago)
So how much did all of this cost again?
Brythespy (2 years ago)
+Ivan Braginski Everything he mentioned are free services, you can take advantage of them whenever you want and unless you're annoying, the employees will be more than happy to help you. remember the workers are just people, they don't run/own the store or care about anything other than getting paid hourly.

Hi Scotty i recently was given the opportunity to learn about cars at my local repair shop over the summer i am 15 and i know the basics about cars but is there any book or guide that will also help me learn
leo321 (2 years ago)
+Alex Coutinho Watch lots and lots of Scotty's videos, as well as EricTheCarGuy. I personally think that their videos are more in depth, and more valuable than any book. They're the closest thing you can get to hands-on experience.
Dan C (2 years ago)
Hey Scotty, I've got a load of small problems and some suspension work that needs to be done. I've also just bought a house that needs a bunch of work so no time to do it myself. I was thinking about dropping my car off at the tech school for a week or so and letting them do it. It's a Saab 9-3 turbo so not the easiest car in the world to work on, but everything's going turbo nowadays so I figure they need the practice. I'm just a little worried they might do more harm than good. What do you think about having mechanics in training do the work for just the cost of parts?
punked6 (2 years ago)
great advice.
LazyEyeCrazyI (2 years ago)
Hey Scotty, could you tell me how best to clean a coolant overflow tank? Mine works great, but it's absolutely filthy since the engine had a prior head gasket issue (since fixed).
UnitedRecording (2 years ago)
+LazyEyeCrazyI Then unbolt it and clean it, if you don't want to spend that much.
LazyEyeCrazyI (2 years ago)
+UnitedRecording Uh, I have a classic BMW. That would cost $170, assuming I don't have to replace anything with it.

Hi Scotty. I have a 2000 Chevy Tracker. When I put my foot on the accelerator while driving , it makes a wheezing noise once in a while. What causes it. My car has 124,000 miles. My tires last changed brand new on 8/8/12.Can you recommend the best tire that I can buy to replace it? Pls. answer
Mr Scotty Kilmer please I need your help, my Honda Accord 1999 with 2.3 litre engine, the engine is burning or evaporating oil , i started to see some white smoke coming out from the exhaust with high RPM or cold start when idling and I fill it half litre of oil every day, no leaks at all, checked all gaskets and O rings, no leaks at all, what is going on please?
Richard Randall (2 years ago)
I don't go to my local autozone, those guys are idiots
Thank you for helping me I have to take it to professional mechanic this week to rebuild it 😢
htc one (2 years ago)
you needa valve job
Scotty Kilmer (2 years ago)
+Doug Reed doug is right, and really, they must have done a bad job on the engine if they rebuilt it, but if it was used, well, that's always a gamble and "testing" them is not guaranteeing anything other than it works right then.
Doug Reed (2 years ago)
+Mohammed Omer Abu-talib Well, white smoke out the tailpipe is coolant, and vanishing oil that isn't hitting the ground is going somewhere else (usually out the tailpipe also, but _slight_ chance of into the cooling system).  You're going to need to pull the head.
MrMac5150 (2 years ago)
*Now we KNOW you getting paid for that or some kind of perks*.
Seegal Galguntijak (2 years ago)
So, Scotty, when are you goona start making real repair videos again, not just promotional stuff? I mean, the videos where people ask questions are a nice add-on and all, but don't really replace the "how to fix xyz on your car" videos (which are now apparently gone).
S Thunda (2 years ago)
Thank you. I've used your previous videos for issues concerning my car. But I seek your advice in a different matter.  A catalytic converter was replaced for family car around 2012 by a well-known car repair company. Smog check done this year (2016) and failed due to "catalytic converter"...the incorrect cc was installed.  Told the well-known car repair company, they were giving us the run around, finally admitted the wrong part was for another car make and blamed the manufacturing company for sending them the wrong part and not checking the model number to ensure that it was for our make of car. Anyway, the repair shop wants to charge us $300 stating that this is for the part itself and that they're not making money from this.  Shouldn't we not be paying anything considering they installed the wrong part initially? Seek advice.
Doug Reed (2 years ago)
+S Thunda You _already_ paid for the part back in 2012, they just failed to give it to you. Tell them you'll be more than happy to let them have the wrong one back.
eljoniz500 (2 years ago)
the castrol gtx you recommended is marked up there it's cheaper at walmart but ill need to try out their loan a tool service

+Angel Gomez well, I disagree, I've used both the past 3 decades and have bad experiences from oreilly myself. Here they used to be Charlie's Hi Lo which were better stores.
ArmedMonkey (2 years ago)
I went in once to have them test my battery and they told me it was completely dead and had no voltage. I started my engine and they still insisted that my battery was completely dead. maybe your area is better but where I live they hire the dumbest people ever.
Vulgar Phil (5 months ago)
ArmedMonkey Same here hahaha the guys that they hire are not automobile literate so they have a hard time telling the difference between an air-cooled engine and a fluid-cooled one. LMAO like the guy above said... If they're paid minimum wage... Well... we can't reallt expect them to be certified mechanics lol
Poor guy he just was doing what he learned in training fuck fucks sakes they pay him 8 bucks in hour don't expect a certified mechanic.
ArmedMonkey (2 years ago)
+Brythespy I didn't get mad at the guy. I was simply trying to diagnose an intermittent starter problem. I wanted to test the battery and the guy told me my battery was completely dead and had 0 volts. I asked the guy if he was sure and started my car to confirm that there defiantly was voltage. The guy still claimed there was no voltage. I thanked the guy and told him that I did not want to replace the battery yet. Just because the guy was a moron does not mean I was disrespectful. I just agreed with him and mentally acknowledged his incompetence. There was absolutely nothing wrong with that battery the problem was a bad starter solenoid.
Brythespy (2 years ago)
+ArmedMonkey Maybe this is true, I don't doubt it with the idiots we hire sometimes, but it's likely our tester said "bad battery". We're supposed to recommend replacing it, as it is the best thing to do BUT... I've driven with a "bad battery" for 5 months before it finally went. It just means the tester detected a high resistance or that the battery was putting out less amps than it should. The bad battery could last another year, or it could die out tomorrow morning, it's unpredictable.
ArmedMonkey (2 years ago)
I asked them how I started my engine if there was no voltage in my battery and they said "I don't know but you probably need a new battery." So I drove away.
Jay Khan (2 years ago)
i like walmart, they cheaper.
Doug Reed (2 years ago)
+Jay Khan I never much cared for the quality of the heater cores Walmart sells. Also, Walmart sucks.

Yup, I'm a big fan of autozone.
