My opinion of these two manuals. Neither one compares to a factory repair manual.

The Truth (5 days ago)
They same to have made these the same now, just with a little different formatting. Does anyone know if this is true for all them, or just for certain models? It is at least for Mazda 3 and a Toyota one. When did this change?

I have a 1993 f150 that starts and shuts right off. I would like a repair manual that can help me to find out the issue. Does the chilton have step by step information like that
farmboy30117 (18 days ago)
I'd recommend trying to find a factory manual on eBay.

Hello I have a Chrysler Saratoga in 1991 and I love this car I'm living in Georgia and there are no parts of this car and if you can tell me where to write off or how to buy parts of this car
Mr Me (1 month ago)
So, it appears that chilton is the better of the two. But how good is it for beginners? I have a older camry that I'm looking to retire and use to learn working with cars. Would chilton be the best option (besides youtube, of course ;-) )
farmboy30117 (1 month ago)
If I had to pick one or the other, I think Chilton's offers more details than Haynes which would be more helpful to beginners.

haynes = horrible, chilton = ok, bentleys = good. period

Thank You Sir !!! Was looking to see which of the two is better myself and you answered that for me. Hit a deer the size of an Elk coming home from Spokane Washington and am almost positive the insurance is gonna total my van. Seen all the parts online pretty reasonable and figured I'd do myself. Thanks for the input

Excellent video. l prefer Haynes myself. If you check out used bookstores you can find them at a really good price. Goodwill as well.

Good idea for a video. I liked my Chilton's better for Cadi's and Honda's then my Haynes, but like we saw in your vid, sometimes it's nice to have more then one book.
farmboy30117 (1 year ago)
Thanks!  It is surprising at how much or little detail you can find in one versus the other.  I guess if they tried to do everything in detail, it'd be a very large book!
jon crall (1 year ago)
Haynes makes it look way too easy.I wonder how many people have started a job because of the 3 steps Haynes gives you then said "what the F did I get myself into. With the car torn apart Thanks Haynes

Haha, yep ;)

Thank You great tips. Also now it isn't Old Age making it hard to decode those photos.

You're welcome!  Thanks for the comment!
But yeah I've definitely had better experience(and heard better reviews) from Chilton books.

Any intelligence agency would never have to look up this guy ever, because we all know where he's from just from his SEVERE drawl! haha lol :P

Brooke Genest, what a rude person you are! After 2008, I have needed to work on my car and found this video to figure out which manual to buy...what the Hell do you offer in this world? Nothing!

I also would like to know if both, haynes or chiltons are for trainning pro technicians and which one is better.
Jack inDabox (2 years ago)
+Eduardo Piston what did they say
Eduardo Piston (2 years ago)
I ve contacted haynes, if they could also offer a pro technician line of manuals besides their DIY line. But they didnt responded to me til now.
farmboy30117 (2 years ago)
I would hope a professional would have access to something better than these.  These are for your average joe and they don't go into much detail.  Best thing I've found is they have the torque specs.
CaseModVideos (2 years ago)
I'm gonna go and order a Chilton right away. Thanks Dude !!
farmboy30117 (2 years ago)
+CaseModVideos If you're interested in the wiring diagrams, stick with the Haynes.  For everything else, the Chilton is better in my opinion.
WILSON! (2 years ago)
Typical Haynes manual explanation: Body panels - "Remove the screws from the panel. Use a plastic panel knife to pry off the panel. Pull panel out of car." Wow, thanks for telling me about that hidden screw that cracked my panel, Haynes!
Taylor F. (2 years ago)
Yeah I hate it. For my car, the power steering pump is literally. "Remove power steering pump retaining bolts. Remove fluid lines, then remove from car." No pictures. Nothing. So I had a HELL of a time getting to that one bolt on the PS pump that is hard to reach.
farmboy30117 (2 years ago)
LOL yeah and Chilton's probably isn't much better with things like that
es (2 years ago)
the haynes manuals are sooooooooooooooo hard to understand. they don't use typical pages, and shit, orginize it in a way like they trying their hardest to confuse the reader.
Taylor F. (2 years ago)
I don't use haynees much. But in the chilton book, the index puts shit in the worst places. Lets say Im looking for "Intake Air Temperature Sensor." I would expect to go under I for Intake, but NO!! Its under E, its a SUBSECTION under ENGINE. CV axles? Under T for transaxle.
farmboy30117 (2 years ago)
+thirstyy thristyy I agree, it could be organized in a better way.
RANDALL ROBINSON (2 years ago)
The Haynes manual is largely generic. I wanted to do an oil change on the 2001 Toyota Camry that I'd recently acquired. When I assembled my tools for the job I wanted to know the socket size for the engine oil pan drain plug. I went to my Hayes for the 1997-2001 Toyota Camry for that information and found that it wasn't in there. There was copy for general information, such as a warning not to touch something hot (really-no kidding!). I had to do trial & error with a few metric sockets to get the right one, a procedure that shouldn't have been necessary. When essential information such as the socket or wrench size for an oil pan drain plug is not in the manual, that's pathetic.
jon crall (1 year ago)
They sell and make your car in different markets So the size drain plug in America might be different in Europe (not fact just example) So in a case like that it'd be almost ridiculous to list all of the sockets it could be. The book would be huge!!! Caroline!!!
Matt Bjork (2 years ago)
What's funny about you bitching about your time lost figuring out the right size socket is that you spent more time writing this comment than you did to figure out the correct socket size. But, huh, might as well complain about how pathetic it is...
farmboy30117 (2 years ago)
I can usually find them on eBay
CSXtrackworker (2 years ago)
+farmboy30117 Where can you obtain the Factory repair manuals from. I have both chilton and haynes for my 08 silverado. Do you know where they can be purchased?
farmboy30117 (2 years ago)
+RANDALL ROBINSON I write my oil pan socket size on the wall so I won't have to crawl under twice.

Brad Steeg (3 years ago)
AllDataDIY is helpful for finding part numbers and reading technical service bulletins. But the step by step repairs are copied from the Factory Service Manual. Haynes has photographs that help you see the actual components. I use all of them for my car and cross check. I've never used Chilton but I should try out their online service to see if I like it. On a budget, I would just download a Factory Service Manual PDF because you can find them for free and they will have the most accurate information.
Steven Dean (3 years ago)
Thank you for the video Farmboy, I am convinced.
zooeyhall (3 years ago)
Factory repair manual is, of course, the best.  One thing about the Haynes manuals is they often have suggestions for substitutes to use instead of expensive special factory tools in certain instances.      It might depend on what car model you are repairing, but I have bought manuals for about 7 different cars and found the Haynes to have more details and pictures than the Chiltons.       Since neither manual is particularly expensive, it is often good to have both on hand.
Aaron W (4 years ago)
Haynes is garbage. I broke my timing belt and the first sentence in the chilton manual about repair "the engine must be removed to complete this repair" the haynes had nothing at all about removing the engine and the repair procedure was spread out over 4 chapters.  spend the extra money if you do your own repairs and buy the chilton
jim jones (2 years ago)
+Aaron W for the prius, word for word chifton and haynes are the same book
Maxiethedog123 (3 years ago)
yeah chilton's are amazing but sadly they dont make chilton's for all cars anymore the only chiltons you can find now are for honda toyota and old muscle cars so most people have to get haynes
WickedPipeliner (4 years ago)
I've never used a Haynes.. Used a Chilton a few times (came with the truck i bought).. I mainly used Alldata for my D-Max..
farmboy30117 (4 years ago)
Doesn't Alldata require a subscription?  I prefer the factory repair manuals if available.  Usually don't have access to a computer where I working on my vehicles.
shane jenson (4 years ago)
Thanks Farmboy….Just the infer I need!

farmboy30117 (5 years ago)
Yeah, I got an IT tractor manual too. It's about like a Haynes.
joe tiller (5 years ago)
I got some Haynes manuals they don't tell you a lot something else I got a IT tractor manual also got a factory manual I paid 70+ for factory manual IT is 30 pages factory manual is about 200 pages tells everthing so you get what you pay for.
farmboy30117 (5 years ago)
I think that's what most garages use so it would need to be
mossman381 (5 years ago)
I use Alldata for my 02 duramax. It is pretty good.
farmboy30117 (5 years ago)
I guess mistakes can occur in any printed material and it is easier to find torque specs in Haynes than the factory manuals.
farmboy30117 (5 years ago)
I haven't used Alldata, but I agree Haynes assumes the person using their manual has a lot of mechanical knowledge.
moparmania74 (5 years ago)
the factory service manual is without a question the best. where i live no one sells chiltons. all you can get is haynes. i like to have the factory book and a haynes. i like a second reference sometimes. for something i may me unsure about. but i have found mistakes even in factory service books. especially in the wiring diagrams.
Chee Kay (5 years ago)
I've got a real hate on for haynes going back many years to when I was trying to use their electrical diagrams for an 81 GMC van. It seems like every replacement sequence starts off with "installation is the reverse of removal" and I expect one day to see them start saying "removal is the reverse of installation.". I'll have to check ebay next time I need a manual. I was subscribed to Alldata dot com and there may be info there that isn't in a shop manual but I'd always rather have the shop
