(14 Oct 2018) LEADIN: Dogs have taken centre stage in Beirut for a festival celebrating our four-legged friends. Woof-Fest is the largest dog festival in Lebanon and aims to promote the positive effects of dog ownership. STORYLINE: The Beirut waterfront has gone to the dogs. Hundreds of people have brought their animals with them to take part in Woof-Fest.   The festival brings together dog lovers from across the city to celebrate the contribution of dogs to society. It is also a chance for dogs to mix with other canines and have some fun in the sun. Woof-Fest also hosts several competitions and gives owners a chance to show their dog's special talents, whether it be fancy dress or  obedience skills. Dog trainer Haitham Chadid has helped to organise the event. "Our main target is to make dogs happy and when our dogs are happy then we are happy too. We hope that what we have done today and what we did in the past and what we will do in the future will pass the message to keep dogs happy and their owners too." Many dogs enter the fashion parade in the hope of being named the best dressed. Big or small, all dogs are welcome and get their chance to shine on stage. In the end, it is a silky terrier who is crowned the winner, much to the excitement of both the dog and owner. For those not into beauty pageants, there are other activities for dogs and owners to enjoy, including pool games and obstacle courses. Dog owner Anwar Thabet says people need to be more aware of their pet's needs and to treat them with respect. "Anyone who would like to own a dog should not imprison it at home, he should get it out. Dogs have feelings and their wellbeing deteriorates if you leave them at home." Professional trainers are on hand to give advice and there is also an area where people can adopt a dog. The pet industry is growing in Lebanon as more people change their ideas about owning a pet. Some sections of the community still believe that owning a pet will lead to health issues.
