Hi. I'm looking for engine repair manual(s) for a 2005 BMW 320i (E46 car with the M54 engine) What I need is all the torque specs, measurements etc, as well as the info on timing the camshafts and setting up the vanos. I've already purchased the cam timing/vanos tool kit. Who sells a manual that covers this?

Hey, Eric! I needed to find out how to replace the coil pack(ignition coil) on my sons 2006 Impala 3.9.A friend of mine had a Haynes 2006-2008 for Chevrolet. it just said to remove the 4 bolts but, did not say how!? I just bought a Chiltons 2006-2011 Chevrolet and it said the same thing. On the 3.5 it's easy because, the intake is square in the back, making it easier to access all 4 bolts. On the 3.9, the intake is rounded in the back making it impossible to reach the top left bolt. i just wasted $25.00 and cannot get a refund because I removed the plastic wrapping. What do I do now? Awesome video. Stay dirty.

Shouldn't every car sold come with one, the owners manual is all but worthless

Haynes manuals are great if you’re new to working on cars. They make a great gift if you know a high school kid that’s working on a beater.
Ltbookum (1 month ago)
I'm very late to this party but as having used them quite a bit myself (in/on motorcycles mostly) I have to say that Honda manuals are the absolute bible amongst any of the workshop manuals in general. There is a fair bit of difference between brands. Italian ones like Moto Guzzi for instance are laughable at best, just trying to make sense of the translations alone is a task in itself. Changing the distribution of cali 1400 starts at taking the cover off of the engine, never mind that you have to take apart half the bike and lower the engine to get to it.. In that case a Haynes manual would most certainly be the beter one to have. As you said right, they have their place.

how can I find the factory manual
pat taylor (7 months ago)
I am retiring my vehicle due to its need for expensive repair work and it's age. In California there is a program that allows you to do this, and get money for the car at the same time. I was thinking of keeping the owner 's manual to sell it, since the car will be taken apart for salvage anyway. The manual is for a 2003Toyota Camry. Can I get money for the owner's manual?

I personally have no issues with Chilton or Haynes manuals. Both are usually fairly parallell in info and cheap but I will get them both for each vehicle I own because they do each have data or color pictures of things like spark plug conditions that the other doesnt and you can buy them used for around $8. That being said, I also purchased the 4 volume factory service manuals for my 2001 toyota for $130 at rock auto because the chiltonians and haynes do leave out details for hardcore repairs or in-depth diagnostics

I have a car, which model is Lexus 2002 Es300. Would please tell me, which website, I can buy the electronic copy of factory service/ repair manual.
Clayton Bridges (11 months ago)
and at the very least haynes is honest. Ive been working on a weird shifter linkage adjustment, and the manual states "this repair is beyond the scope of this manual"
Clayton Bridges (11 months ago)
I agree, with electronic sources are the best as well
Clayton Bridges (11 months ago)
when I DIY repairs at home, haynes and chilton have good stuff and info for cars, and have general specs and procedures. for example when doing suspension, it iwll tell you you need to remove a certain piece FIRST, which saves time form doing by figuring it out. often the haynes manuals pictures arent the best and can leave you second guessing yourself. nothing against them, its just sometimes, they arent in "context" if you know what I mean.

Why can't you call something that is bad "bad" you do not have to be so "PC" ETCG1. I have mixed feelings on your motivation on buying a manual for auto trans repair. Sure the Odyssey had lots of trans problems (I had one factory replacement not make the test drive) but when I left Honda we were not being schooled in auto trans repair (same with BMW) and the manufacture strongly discouraged auto trans work (same with Kia by the way). I think access to information related to full on recalls is of value and Service Information Bulletins are very important. You are not going to be paid diagnostic time if there is already an existing service information bulletin dealing with your issue Haynes and Clymer manuals are really bad. Now the "Volkswagen repair for Dummies" (the original) was pretty good. It actually had a shim chart for the link pin front axle.

Dan R (1 year ago)
I do not think it would be too tough to phrase your comment about Haynes and Clymer manuals so as you both present the short comings and keep yourself out of court. In fact it would be easy to do as you would simply have to present the truth.
Jason Koneman (1 year ago)
If he as a business owner and "expert" tells people a product is bad and causes people not to buy that product he can be sued and would lose unless he could prove in court that he was 100% correct.  It's a legal concept known as tortious interference."Tortious interference, also known as intentional interference with contractual relations, in the common law of torts, occurs when a person intentionally damages the plaintiff's contractual or other business relationships."He's not being "PC" by not labeling them as bad.  They have their place and a valid use and stating otherwise without hard evidence is damaging to their business.  That's why one of your competitor mechanics can't take out ads saying "Dan R is a crappy mechanic that will FUBAR your car." If it's not 100% true they'd have to pay all of your projected lost revenue.

I know this vid may be old, but combining a tablet with an electronic version of an FSM is the best way to go, you can search and look for troubleshooting pages within the PDF while you are inside the car or near the engine and compare what you see on the PDF and the actual vehicle

Yeah well I think there worthless I've used them before and they're so danm vauge and even there torque specs which is what I use them for have been way way wrong
Andrew Luck (1 year ago)
+Chris Silva I, on the other hand have found Haynes Manuals very useful over my last 51 years as a motorcyclist! I have always found what I needed to know. Also, although I spent the last 43 years of my working life in IT as a software engineer and systems designer, I much prefer to refer to a paper manual rather than an electronic version!
The Guvnor (2 years ago)
Those factory service manuals are worth their weight in gold (even with the hilarious Japanese spellings). I still like the Haynes/Chilton guides though as there usually nuggets of information in each of them that you dont find on the others. Some of the stuff in them can be a bit generic, but they sometimes have some good photos of part locations that are in tricky places. If I know I'm going to be doing any major work on a car I use all three (factory/Haynes/Chilton). Downloads or CD-ROMs are awesome as you can put them on iPads and take them out to the vehicle, but paper manuals are great and are a good staple for bathroom reading ;) I'm not a mechanic/technician (my dad was and a lot of times but wish I had been) so only need to buy the manuals for my own vehicles, and I can see how it can be cost prohibitive for private repair shops, unless PDF downloads can get factored into repair costs.
Shane Sexton (2 years ago)
It's a cost factor. Haynes manuals are usually only about $20, so that's another way of saying that they have their place. I also find the Haynes books seem to present certain things in a more laymen way. In my field, which happens to be IT, it's like comparing Microsoft TechNet to ForDummy's books.

HowSci (2 years ago)
wow, thank you very much.
Mystickneon (2 years ago)
The problem I have with Chilton & Haines service manuals is that they constantly fallback to "Consult a qualified service center for this type of repair"... I bought it so I would learn how to do the work, not for it to tell me to take it to the dealer. And they also fall short on model year differences for those editions that cover a large number of vehicles(like the "Chrysler Full-Size Trucks 1967-1988")... not only model years, but model and even makes. All of which has subtle differences. Sometimes there is just no information for a given model in a given year... just look at all the changes made to the 318 over the years. They are great for basic stuff, and I call them the "Extended Owner's Manual".... but for real repair work... NO.
Jason Koneman (1 year ago)
I view the Haynes/Chilton manual as being designed for the home/DIY person who has very little experience and who really shouldn't do some repairs on their own, like me.  I can change an alternator but have no business changing a transmission.  I see the Factory Service Manuals as for the professional mechanic or advanced home mechanic.
Taylor F. (1 year ago)

Have to agree, factory manual in pdf is the best. Especially when it comes to removing trim panels, always seems to be a certain trick to doing it, without breaking or damaging the part, that the factory manual goes over step by step. Another good thing is you can print out certain pages so you have all your torque specs, and tolerances, and not worry about ruining a book, or your computer while doing a job.

I've got my Honda Accord factory service manual book and on CD and V6 supplemental manual. I guard it with my life. Bishko makes automotive literature on paperback or CD. I got mine from Amazon.

Eric, would you say the Chilton or Haynes manual are the right choice for the person who's not willing to do their own electrical work? Because it seems like you're showing that as the main advantage to the factory manual, and I'm not getting a manual to potentially do any electrical work, only a moderate amount of mechanical work.

Jake Schneider being a mechanic here I say haynes chiltons just says do it then do it reverse to put it back on

Thanks Eric. I went ahead and ordered the Factory Service Manual PDF form for my 2003 Subaru Outback.

Another advantage of the PDF manuals is the ability to zoom up - when you need to take a closer look at an assembly, there's nothing better than simply zoom and pan!

I too have found mistakes on factory manuals, still the best though. Although after market manual are good too, better than no manual.

It would be nice if they passed a law that service manuals had to be included or available for free as a download with a vehicle purchase.  In fact it should probably include the purchases of any equipment like a TV or laptop.

It is a smashing one off guide for learning how to repair your car the easy way minus the hard work. Ive heard some decent things about it and my friend Sam finally got excellent success with it.

I'll say what you cant say on your behalf Eric. Haynes Manuals should be made illegal or burnt.

"I can read them in the bath"  HAHAHA I might try that , I totally agree with you, I don't own any cars can't drive because I'm partially-sighted but I love service manuals, cars and anything technical, some would say to a nerdy or trainspotting level but hey whatever floats yer boat.  Haynes has manuals on loads of things and it's nice to get more than one person's opinion on the subject, plus as you say the pictures really help and the walkthroughs can be better understood by someone doing it whereas the official FSM might be abit too formal and technical to be easily followed by the DIYer who just want to save some money by doing the easy stuff themselves.

+joseph jackson I have the FSM and the Haynes manuals for my vehicles, and I always read and compare the relevant procedure in both of them before proceeding with any repair. Sometimes, Haynes gives shortcuts that save time. Sometimes it's no different to the FSM, sometimes it has useful photos that the FSM doesn't, and sometimes it just doesn't cover the repair at all (obviously the average Haynes manual covers less than the FSM). I want as much information as possible, so I'll always compare and contrast from as many sources as possible. Haynes manuals certainly have their place for that. And one other benefit - my FSMs are PDFs, while my Haynes are the printed manuals, so I can read them in the bath :)

Haynes or any other manuals put their own takes on presenting information.  Why discard it?  Would you only listen to your father's advice on how to drive a car, but not your mother's?  Same principles apply.  The more information that is available, the more better you can absorb that in put into your own brain and make of it.

Sam,my haynes manual cant even tell me what brakes I have, photos of coil spring and struts are completely wrong, fuel filter(for a diesel)just tells me you may have to replace whole housing depending on what model you have(?)hang on Mr Haynes I,ve bought the correct manual and you wish to skip another important service instuction?!!The list goes on Sam,the manuals are so wrong, and so dont know its unbliveable,,I have now ordered a service manual disc for £4.99(thank you eric and youtube)and I'll get busy, till then my vans still out front not earning me any money.

Why?  I bought one for my original mini, auto repair workshops and garage's get enough dosh from the loads of people who don't have the time, effort or knowledge to repair their car themselves, atleast Haynes manuals, whilst maybe not always perfect, can save the person who is inclined to DIY save quite abit of money on professional repair work, there has to be a balance between the 2 kinds of people otherwise, the DIYers would start teaching themselves how to do it, and people would go ape-shit at the cost of garage repairs if there were no  workshop manuals for those who were motivated , to use.  There are still plenty of folk out there who'll take their car's to garages so dunno what Eric would be moaning about, he'll still get a decent wage out a that, there are probably more of them than there are DIY'ers.  Also it's good for the aftermarket and component suppliers aswell as the manufacturers as it builds some trust in the consumer if they give them the option to repair their car instead of being at the makers beck and call.
