Thank you so much for this, it’s not too hard as some have said. I believe it’s far to many options given to a child that yet doesn’t understand math. With this many options, it can become difficult to follow, without already having an understanding of how math works, weather it’s adding, subtracting, or whatever the function maybe.

+kevin harris The whole point of Common Core math is to help kids understand math. Before kids learn about operations, they are first taught about numbers and number relationships. Using approaches like "decomposing," the "number puzzle," and the "10 blocks" help them to understand more fully what's happening in the standard addition algorithm. They can also help with mental math. The "money approach" is also quite practical.

Would you please share these excellent strategy cards with me! I am a new 2nd grade teacher this year and would love to provide these to my kiddos as a math tool for learning.

Great for addition but what about subtracting?

When drawing the ones, try putting dots into groups of five. Thanks for sharing. I appreciate learning about the new strategies.

Great job

Some great strategies.  I question the use of the US standard algorithm in 2nd grade.  This is a 4th grade standard.  Otherwise, great job!

This is why Math grades have dropped. They are making it too difficult! The old way worked fine if it isn't broken don't mess with it!

Yes, but students need to be exposed to different strategies. We as humans think differently, therefore, applying different methods give students the opportunity to solve and check their work. Such as inverse operations.

+Gwen Wilkerson, I agree that it appears to be too complex when there is a quick short cut that works. What us teachers and schools have failed to communicate to parents is that students are expected to not only arrive at the correct answer, they are also expected to understand and explain how they arrived at the correct answer. We are encouraging students to be flexible thinkers. You are right, some students just need a simple way that works.
Great job. Helped the kiddies. Thanks
