Service Dog Alerts to Seizure

7254 ratings | 739663 views
I had a bad seizure day and Colt a weim/lab was alerting non stop so I set up the camera in hopes of getting better footage then last time. When he alerted he came and laid his head on me staring at me, then got up on me, pushing into me, then started to paw at me. If I try to get up he holds me down by getting on top of me and pushing into me. Even if I tell him to get down and I try to get up he will come back and hold me down. I did this just to show what he does. I hope this brings awareness to the real work that service dogs can do and why it is so important to not distract a service dog from its job. With out his alerts I can't take medication to stop or shorten the seizure and I could stop breathing and die. Service dogs do serious work and it can be life threatening if they are distracted from their job. ▪️ Frequently Asked Questions▪️ Q: What breed is Colt? A: Weimaraner/English Labrador Q: Where did I get Colt? A: Colt was hand picked from a litter by a behavioralist and myself. Q: Who Trained Colt? A: Colt was owner trained by myself. So when Colt give his alert a seizure is coming soon, what do you have to do to avoid one? Sorry you get seizures at all. Your Colt is a God send. Thanks for showing us.
Chuck Pestacchi (1 month ago)
I'm so glad I found your channel, I very much appreciate the clips. Thanks for educating me about what a true Service Dog like Colt can do, it's amazing. Wish you all a good day, Thanks again.
Service Dog Colt (1 month ago)
Chuck Pestacchi thanks for the question, when Colt alerts I take medication and go to the bathroom and a few other things, the meds work half of the time or more to prevent it but sometimes it doesn’t, he alerts right before it happens and I lay down.

My husband has terrible seizures and the medication he's on sometimes doesn't prevent it. He recently fell on concrete and now has a concussion and is going for a CAT scan today. Does anyone know how we can purchase a pup to help him? Where do you find specially trained retrievers like these?
Service Dog Colt (2 months ago)
hello kitty I’m sorry to hear that. I would say talk to his doctor, since the doctor has to basically prescribe the dog to him. Also start find raising, it cost thousands and thousands of dollars. Then you can probably I’m a year or so be able and ready. Takes a long time to even get the process started than it takes a long time for the dog to finish training if you go through a. Organization. Seizure alert dogs can not be trained to alert its natural, so the dog has to be able to already do it. It’s not easy to find one

Used to work with a girl & she told us, if she ever had a seizes to put something very hard between her teeth. Otherwise I guess she could bite her tongue also her tongue could choke her while having a seizure.
Service Dog Colt (4 months ago)
Ro Schroeder actually it can’t but if you put something in someone’s mouth while seizing they will and could break all there teeth out. No need to touch their mouth at all. That’s a myth. Just put them on their side.

With all due respect please provide a automatic feeder for your pets, I hope you can over come your illness. 💕
Service Dog Colt (4 months ago)
Just Be It automotic feeder? That would lead to obesity in most dogs, also my dog is raw fed and that’s impossible. My cats get a full bowl they can come back to all they want but if they had a weight problem from that then I would feed them twice a day like some cats need. What does that even have to do with this video?

Amazing video! I'm waiting for an epilepsy service dog myself but never really knew what to expect with the doggo's behavior. Does it prevent a seizure, when he's warning you (so you have to rest)? And is the dog calming you down with his warning, thus preventing the seizure? I'm really curious if having a service dog helps multiple ways :-) Thanks!
Duchess BonFamille (5 months ago)
Service Dog Colt Ah that's what I thought. It's great that his warnings and you taking your meds helps you. What kind of meds do you take to prevent a seizure? A sedative or? I'm still waiting for a dog when they find the right match, so we can start training. Looking forward to it, and definitely hoping it'll make things better! :)
Service Dog Colt (5 months ago)
Duchess BonFamille nothing can prevent a epileptic seizure besides medications. But him alert does give me time to take it and if the meds kick in which is about half the time I don’t have one. Good luck on your new Journey, they should have explained all this to you if your going through a. Organization. Seizure alert can not be trained, it’s a natural ability but the way they alert, like pawing can be shaped into the behavior wanted. The response, like getting help or meds is trained.
Sarah (5 months ago)
This is amazing at how in tune canines are! They have a special sense of seizures! I had a brain injury, from a car accident, 9.4.99. I saw trained service dogs visit the patients in the hospital I was at.

I've always wondered how long the window is between the moment the dog alerts the owner and the seizure. Does it vary from dog to dog? Person to person? Episode to episode?
Kathryn Swarm (5 months ago)
I got my first SD two years ago that is trained for Seizure Alert and Stability among some other things and still after two years I’m learning so much. My seizures are better controlled then they use to be, but a trigger for them is to much stress. They also are nocturnal so I can’t always feel one coming or see his Gabe is responding. I am so amazed at how much dogs can know more then we sometimes do, like “I’m not going to let you up no matter how hard you try”
Jehan Jamee (5 months ago)
how do service dogs know when someone is about to habve a seizure?
Louise Cairns (5 months ago)
Amazing xx
So he alerts before a seizure has started? How do you train a dog for that? I have epilepsy and because it’s getting worse I am looking in to the possibility of getting a service dog.
Service Dog Colt I did read, I was only aware of dogs trained to respond to someone having a seizure. I had never seen one who had the ability to alert before the seizure. And I understand the ‘either they have it or they don’t’ factor, I was just curious if he picked up on the aura that usually precedes a seizure.

I have seizures and wonder how they can tell
Lindsay Spates (5 months ago)
Where is the seizure? Also, how did he start alerting you? My doctors and professionals said that dogs can't be trained to do this, but some learn on their own by becoming attuned to what happens when you have a seizure. Is that what happened?
Service Dog Colt (5 months ago)

I hope this is not a rude question, but how does the dog alerting help if you are home alone,or is it just for support kind of? I'm not familiar with seizures, so when the dog alerts does it prompt you to take medication or get in a certain position to prevent it, prompt you to call 911 if you feel it coming on, or the dog helps alert someone that may be with you to get you the help you need, or the dog alerting just let's you know to find a spot/sit/lay down so you don't hurt yourself by falling? I'm just curious in case I ever see this in person with a person who may have a service dog. My normal reaction would be to call 911 if I saw someone having a seizure, but I notice some people don't do that when they have service dogs or when someone has a seizure? I saw it once and it was really scary but the people they were with didn't call 911. I wanted to but didn't have my phone.

Please help if you can.... looking for someone who can retrain my nephews seizure alert service dog in Orlando, Florida area..or recommend a reputable trainer.....She is not alerting of my nephews grand mal seizures at all. She is supposedly certified and we all pitched in the hefty amount to purchase her to help with my nephew... what is the worst part??? My nephew generally has seizures at night, during sleep, or early morning...and the only way to detect it is to sleep with one eye open to get oxygen and his rescue meds administered ASAP... I don’t know where else to turn to ask this for my sister and nephew... any reputable information would greatly help...please....
Service Dog Colt (5 months ago)
SB 0403 make sure you bring it to the news as well, if you need more info comment any time, best place to contact me though is on Instagram under the same name as this account. God bless you. Prayers.

Service Dog Colt thank you so much for your reply... this is all new to our family. I can’t believe (well in this world I can unfortunately) that people would scam a child for money.... it’s so sad... and yes, my father is in the beginning stages of figuring out what to do legally with these people.... again, thank you :)
Service Dog Colt (5 months ago)
SB 0403 I’m so sorry, it sounds like you guys were scammed. Seizure alert is not trainable in dogs, they can only detect it if they have the capability of doing so as a extra sense, the dog can either do it or can’t, it’s rare to find a dog that can. And it can not be trained. You’ll probably have to train the dog to respond rather then alert, so with cues like when he starts shaking the dog needs to push a button for help, or go get help or whatever works for you. You’ll probably have to contact a private trainer that has trained service dogs before. Good luck. Prayers for you. Try and report the people who sold you the dog.

Service Dog Colt (5 months ago)
Haley Goodwin this isn’t for anxiety but yes if it’s 100% disabling and the person qualifies for a service dog they could possibly get one, problem with that is a service dog actually causes more anxiety most times cause everyone stares at you or tries to talk to you.

I don't understand how you guys can be blessed with a service dog that the defects ur seizures and you don't take heed to it my son has brain damage and he has seizures and we can't get blessed with the dam service dog... I'm angry because we begged for years for a dog for our son and well I guess they dont give a damn about a fully disabled boy with brain damage who cant tell what he feels when the seizure is coming on
Service Dog Colt (5 months ago)
LL Godsgirlie don’t take heed? My dog alerts me and I take medications to stop it. I am lucky to have Colt and his ability but I trained him myself because I have experience training military dogs. Living a life of compare ones self to another is not a good way to live and very rude to me. I do the best i can in life and I am thankful for what I have but my life is in no way easy. Also if your son is severely brain damaged he may not be qualified for a service dog because he can not control the dog. The handler has to be able to give commands and physically be able to hold the dog.
wweandy123 (5 months ago)
There was this lady at the grocery store, she was in a wheelchair and also had a service dog. I knew that you can't talk or distract service dogs no matter how cute they are. Anyway, I was shopping but I couldn't help but notice that she had his leash very loose. Like he wasn't next to her, he was ta least 3 or 4 feet away from her. She was telling kids 'oh you can let him' and what not. Even when I was passing by them in the aisle, the dog just kind of started following me and sniffing my leg. Idk. I guess people really do abuse the name of 'service dog' to get their pet anywhere. I'm not trying to judge her, the dog could still keep doing his job I guess, it was just confusing for me to see something like that when service dogs are supposed to be a bit more focused and the owner most definitely wouldn't encourage distractions.
Service Dog Colt (5 months ago)

How can trainers tell if a Service dog might be a good "Seizure Dog"? Do you by any chance know? I'm having to ask for a lot for myself because I also need a "Bracer" for me when I walk or start to fall so he/she would have to be large but I'm not sure If I can handle a 95 lb male Lab on me like that. It's amazing how many things you have to think about when going down the Service Dog path and my journey has just begun.  Thankfully there are 2 organizations where I live, one of which does nothing but train dogs for these purposes and even has selected inmates from the State prison help with training the dogs. It's a very cool program.  I'm looking forward to starting this journey but wow, so much to consider.  Thanks for sharing your experiences with Colt, it's helping me relax about the idea.
