I have one question, why is there a 10W30 fully synthetic oil ? A normal oil has that temperature change characteristic. A good oil should start with 0, like 0W30 or 0W40.

Little tid bit for what I do with my personal vehicles. I get a note book write down the current date miles and repair, then write down the next service date and miles. I usually use the owner manual for service intervals. I check the note book ever 2 weeks to see if anything need done, and check them off when I do the services

I personally only use mobil 1 full synthetic in all my vehicles. It's only $25 for 5qts at Walmart. I replace every 5000miles or change at least once a year. Full synthetic is also very helpful in cold start up lubrication, if you live somewhere cold during winter like me.

Fluids in general should be replaced as needed. Power steering, coolant, differential, brake and so on. New fluids will always make parts last longer than neglected ones.

Since I’m the 4th owner of my Saturn vue with 250k. I change all fluids once a year. I don’t care if it’s only have 5,000 to 10,000 miles. But the oil is a different story. I change that about twice a year.

Hi Scotty, do you believe the manufacturers like Ford who suggest that the ATF will “last for the lifetime of the car” ? Ive got a 4L Ford Falcon XR6 which is just on 200,000kms and requires an auto transmission fluid service and new filter costing me around $400

Synthetic oil might cost 3-4 times what regular oil costs, but the added protection and longevity between oil changes is worth it. Cheap insurance. Using a good oil and filter is the one thing I'd never cheap out on when it comes to regular maintenance.

"Every 3,000 miles or twice a year" What?!!!!! You only drive 6,000 miles per year? At that rate, it will take you over 127 years to hit 1,000,000 on your odometer. Good luck with that.

I use mobile 1 n premium oli filter still do my oil change every 3750- 4000 miles. 35 $ is a small price to pay on ur 30$ investment. This is from a guy who has worked in the automotive business for 12 years +
Mat Burkett (3 months ago)

Kevin S (3 months ago)
If your 25 year old '93 Celica has less than 250k miles on it it, the car will be over 100 years old when it reaches 1 million miles (at your current rate.....)!! Also, synthetic oil is not 2 to 3 times as expensive as conventional oil. My local Walmart sells 5 quart jugs of Mobil 1 for less than $25 which is only $5 to $10 more than conventional oil. Also, many new cars require synthetic oil.

Ok...I get asked the question all the time. 3 times a day..."What is the difference between an, "Italian Tune-up," and a, "French Tune-up." The Italian tune-up, simply uses the combustion engine to blow out accumulated carbon. The French Tune-up is done by placing your mouth directly over the tail pipe and suck the carbon right out of that mother fucker!

Scotty Kilmer...you are awesome! I just posted this on Facebook to spread the word on your videos. In a great way you remind of my Uncle who was an Auto Mechanic who become a Telecommunications Engineer. He still loves working on cars and teaching people how. If anyone wants to learn basic auto maintenance: this guy Scotty Kilmer is awesome. This video pretty much covers everything that I can do. If I can do this stuff...almost anyone can. Of course, your car might be annoying for certain things...mine requires you to lift the engine of its mounts to change the spark plugs...grumble. For some reason, Subaru cars are great for the home mechanic (they even have dipsticks and drain plugs for transmission fluid...my old Chevy requires you drop the pan...). Have a good one!
