(9 Jun 2018) Pope Francis met with over 500 of children of various religions at the Vatican on Saturday as part of the 6th annual "Train of the children" event. The theme of the meeting was "The re-training of outskirts" referring to the difficulties of living in marginal areas with high levels of poverty, criminality and other vulnerabilities. A group of children from the outskirts of Milan met their peers from the outskirts of Rome at Vatican City's small railway station. Some of the young participants were Christian, others Buddhist, Muslim or Orthodox. "In a way, this is an ecumenical, interfaith and intercultural meeting," said Cardinal Gianfranco Ravasi, President of the Pontifical Council for Culture. He added the event was an invitation to appreciate how humanity shares the same "horizon" and is at the same time rich with diversity. "To appreciate variety, not to be afraid of diversity, is one of the big, fundamental issues - not only for Pope Francis, but for the whole Christianity," he said. Francis has underlined, on a number of occasions, the importance of diversity and intercultural approaches. The children met with the Pope and sang songs to him before releasing white balloons to fly away into the sky at the end of the audience.
