Can You Hotwire a car Like in the Movies - Hollywood Secrets Revealed

6783 ratings | 444955 views
In this video I'll show whether the quick hot wire of a car and driving it off that you see in the movies either by a thief or a hero during and emergency is actually possible or not. To an unsuspecting eye it may look like all you have to do is find the two right wires, strip the ends, touch them together, start the car and off you go. But there's more to it than that, watch this video and find all there is to know about a car's starting system. I'm gonna say it is IMPOSSIBLE to just reach under the dash and rip out some wires and spark them together until the car starts....once upon time but not for years now! It's even damn hard to find a car old enough to do that and likely it is someones baby watched like a hawk! Even newer stuff that can still be hotwired takes more than just bypassing the switch...there is the steering lock and park lock to deal with too! Hollywood insults the intelligence of way too many people ...they don't have to it is just sloppy easy to entertain complete morons....but everyone does not believe TV wresting and TV evangelists are real There is still plenty enough people that ARE insulted by all the totally unnecessary BS hollywood foists on us....I wish some movie makers would write it into their story line to make fun of hollywood...educate people to stop buying the bull crap and demand more realism!
That tool you use to point makes me think you should look into being a dentist

it works exactly like the movies. take a hammer and flat head and hammer it into the top of the steering column or plug a computer from a car factory, dealershipor some shit and use that

To take care of the wheel lock, take a screw driver to the back of the stirring wheel and just pry it up and just dont steal cars made past 2000

You just need a screwdriver to jam in between the steering column and the ________ to be able to use the steering wheel.
mercer215 (11 months ago)
The comments are funny I've done it to Honda Accord little easier than how he showed it but just about the same idea as far as the steering lock as long as you don't steer the wheel before you start the engine you're usually good

Thanks for the video. I was looking for a way to crank the engine by myself so I could do things such as check for spark and test fuel pressure by myself. My starter is buried underneath the engine, so I cannot just hook up one of those switches that they sell for that.

the ignition assembly where you put the key in unlocks the wheel lock they are made of out cast aluminum I've broken several off when people have lost keys just using a hammer or even a monkey wrench and twisting the assembly off of the steering column very easy and you can drive the car away any cars during the 1990s this is feasible usually newer cars have chips in the key and you'd need to connect a laptop to the ecu to bypass the chip
Dankus Memus (1 year ago)
hammer + chissel that steering lock thing off. Ive owned two cars in the past that weren't sold with keys. The keyfob id is also easy enough to bypass, just go to the wreckers and find a key + ring off any car by the same manufacturer. The key is coded to the key-ring sensor, not the ECU.

You can kick the steering wheel and break the lock on some vehicles . We did it on our shitbox 1993 chevy cavalier

Another thing you might see in movies which I don't think can be done (easily) in real life is they sometimes depict the Wheel lock on cars that have been hot wired, so the criminal or who ever just uses all their might to break the wheel lock, but I imagine its a lot harder then just turning the wheel really hard with all your strength.

I had to hotwire a car once when the owner dropped and lost the key. It didn't have an immobiliser. On modern cars with immobilisers, you can get really cheap dongles that you can just plug into the OBD-II connector to disable it and then hotwire as before.

depends on the car... I had a 90 vw jetta for awhile I was starting it with a pair of pliers cause the lock portion fell out the ignition socket.

matsv201 (1 year ago)
on order cars The wheel lock can bra broken with pure strength. Just breake it. but its.kind of dangerus because it can snap back when drivning. also on quite a few old cars The ignition lock can be broken with just a sqrewdriver and a wrench. solving both problems. of cause on even semi modern cars this is not possible.
Gr1pEnemy (1 year ago)
alternatively you can open the engine bay and "hotwire" the ignition source from there... you can put voltage directly on the starter as well... i used to have a toyota corolla Ke30 that i hotwired because race car... had to try and explain to the police that i didn't steal my own car once but instead it was because race car... I used to take the ignition wires with me so no one could get it running in a hurry... because race car...

With some cars all you need is some brute force to pop the steering lock.
James (1 year ago)
These days a common technique is to hack into the cars computer. You get to control everything from there.
James (1 year ago)
+Nicky Otto I saw it on TV maybe 2 years ago, so I'm a little hasty on the details. So, it was something along the lines of them plugging something into the cars computer (kinda like putting a usb cable into PC) and that overrides the controls and they have access to everything, including the ignition. I believe it was on 20/20 or dateline if you care to look further into it.

there is a new way of breaking into cars these days, the perp sets up a reciever to his laptop and waits in the shadows for a victom to use their remote and catch the coded signal and waits for the person to leave so they open the car with the home made remotes hooked to the laptop and steal whats in the car but not the car its self..leaving no evidence becasue they just fooled the alarm system and opened the door..
Evi1M4chine (1 year ago)
I saw a movie where they directly addressed the wheel lock.

Either he’s the good guy, OR he hot-wires cars. PROTIP: Jack Bauer is NOT the good guy. There are no good guys in 24. The murder industry just wants you to believe you are.

glad you mentioned newer cars because without my keys the car can't be hot wired and I totally forgot about wheel lock since I never use it(never really park on hills)
Gizmo Lipstick (1 year ago)
the streering lock is no problemo. You can break with a good grip and a twist.
Mamo (1 year ago)
Carjacking is a lot easier and quicker.
No need if old enough. No need to be a MacGyver either. All you need is a flathead screwdriver to both unlock the doors and start it. Brought to you by Ford, Holden, Toyota, Dodge, Isuzu, Lada, Daewoo etc.
Sharo [I am Machine] (1 year ago)
my Nissan is so shit you sometimes can't even ignite the engine WITH the keys. It will fake empty battery/fuel unless you exit the car, wait a while and go back in.

I hotwired a 1992 chrysler lebaron once, Its my dad's old car and the ignition switch broke, and we needed to move it. the plug was similar to the one on the car in the video, and the wheel lock was just a small switch behind the lock cylinder, pressed it forward and jammed it with a nail. I've never had the car on the road like that, but I have started it and moved it around the yard a few times.

you earned a thumbs up with the dashboard ninja!
neardood1 (1 year ago)
There's also a thing called an immobiliser which is specifically designed to stop what he did in the video from working, usually by using an electronic system to wirelessly check for a specially coded chip inside the key. Depending on the make/model ect it will either wait for a set time before disabling the engine or simply not allow the engine to start if it does not see the key.

If you are going to hotwire, do it to a motorcycle. Even the top end ones have no anti hotwire systems from factory.
Martin (2 years ago)
If you want to steal a new car you would need to swap the computer and somehow unlock steering.
David Beppler (2 years ago)
um.. worked with a mechanic.. he needed to start a newer 2001 Mercedes. took him 5 minutes to disengage the steering lock and 30 seconds to start the car.... but he has been a mechanic for over 30 years.
MegaWheelnut (2 years ago)
I think you're searching for the term "transponder key" at the end of your video. All modern cars have them, I think from about 1997 or something. It contains, as you said, a chip that sends a signal to the engine management computer when you turn the key. If that signal matches the one recorded in the engine management, the engine wil start. Without a matching chip, you can connect all the wires you want, but the car won't start.
JC Fennec (2 years ago)
If the car is old enough... like 1986 or older, it's more likely it will work like in the movies.
Stephan Phillips (2 years ago)
Another option on older cars is a bump key and a hammer. Much faster as well.
