Storm lashes parts of Yemen with heavy rain and winds

(14 Oct 2018) After being downgraded to a tropical storm, 'Luban,' a former cyclone, lashed parts of Yemen with heavy rain and winds on Sunday. In the far-eastern province of the country, Al-Mahra, government officials called on residents to avoid areas of heavy flooding and not to go out in boats. The areas expected to be most affected by the storm are in the east of Oman and the west of Yemen, including the large coastal city of Mukallah. Weather experts have warned of a high likelihood of mudslides and flooding from the storm. The rising waters could prove particularly dangerous for the country's nomadic Bedouin and the internally displaced, who often live in makeshift homes. There are also fears of security concerns due to the country's ongoing war, which could prevent aid groups from reaching some communities in need. The country's war has also left many areas in dire poverty with few resources to survive severe weather. The Saudi-led coalition has been locked in a stalemated war with the Houthi rebels since 2015. An estimated 10,000 people have been killed in Yemen's conflict, which has produced what the United Nations says is the world's worst humanitarian crisis.
