UAB trial to test promising new treatment approach for diabetes

13 ratings | 3043 views
Anath Shalev, MD, director of the UAB Comprehensive Diabetes Center, explains the “repurposing of verapamil as a beta cell survival therapy in type 1 diabetes” trial, which will test an approach different from any current diabetes treatment. The trial is based on Shalev's research showing that verapamil, a common blood pressure drug, reverses diabetes in animal models. Learn more about the trial, and the research behind it, here: http://www.uab.edu/news/innovation/item/5508-in-human-clinical-trial-uab-to-test-drug-shown-to-completely-reverse-diabetes-in-human-islets-mice Follow the trail of discoveries that led to the new trial here: http://themixuab.blogspot.com/2014/11/discovery-route-path-to-potential.html?+news

I am SO excited about this. I've never held out much hope that there would ever be a cure come to light for diabetes or cancer. I myself have been very fortunate. I was diagnosed with T2D on 2/26/16. My blood glucose level was 385 and my A1C was 10.8%! Now, on 5/23/16, less than 3 months from date of diagnosis, my A1C is down to 6.5%, maybe even a little less, and my sugar levels are down between 95 and 115, with an occasional spike up to the mid 120's. I've accomplished this simply by being sure that I keep my carbs down to 60g/day or less, WITHOUT the use of any diabetes medications. No glucophage/metformin no insulin shots, nothing. I bought Dr. Marlene Merritt's book, 'Smart Blood Sugar' and followed her recommendations. My doctor has been through the roof thrilled with my progress! So I have for that matter. But aside from my progress, I am absolutely thrilled to hear about this study and can't wait to hear more about the results. By the way, for anyone who's interested, you can sign up on UAB's Diabetes Center website for updates on this study as they're put out. Looking forward to REAL progress!

Eager to hear the results of the Verapamil study. I've been taking this medicine since last summer. My A1c has lowered from 6.4 to 6.2. I am also carefully following a diet provided to me at St. Mary's hospital in 2002. Thanks for posting this video.
