Today's question comes from August Rush and they write "What do you think about Dr. Greger and his website nutritionfacts.org" Dr. Michael Greger's video on "Optimal Cholesterol Levels", which can be found here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lakaozfALho If we look at smoking, it may not directly cause the formation of plaque - but it has been well established that it does lower the amount of HDL within our blood (1). Why is this an issue? The role of HDL is to serve as a vehicle for the transport of cholesterol from peripheral cells to the liver for both their excretion and their catabolism (2) In others words, if theirs to little HDL in the blood, LDL will accumulate within the arterial walls - and if left unchecked will lead to atherosclerosis. In 1991, there was a study looking at the association between blood pressure and serum lipids (3). What the researchers found was that their was a positive relationship between total cholesterol and blood pressure when diastolic pressure was greater than 99 , keeping in mind this was also the case after making adjustments for various confounding factors such as age, BMI, alcohol intake, etc. The reason for this is because the damage of hypertension enables white blood cells to stick to the endothelial cells, weakening the barrier between the endothelium and the other layers of the artery. Over time, this leads to additional thickening of the endothelium and the formation of plaques (4) In the case of the lack of fruits and vegetables in the diet, people more than likely are replacing them with highly processed and refined foods which easy can contribute to negative cholesterol levels. The same goes for a lack of exercise as well, and excess stress as well. This is because trying to explain every simple process needed for a scientific experiment is often difficult. Let's say for example, If you want to measure the efficiency of a car engine. Is it better to break it all down and measure each component individually, or just measure the efficiency of the engine as a whole? In examining the nine different risk factors mentioned...reducing it down to just cholesterol as being the only factor required for the formation of atherosclerosis is taking the one with the fewest assumptions that fits the available data which is an oversimplification of the true state of reality, which in and of itself is always more complex than the available data. The goal of the video is to try and sort out optimal cholesterol levels, hence the title. However, if you look at the video within it's entire context, he isn't trying to point out optimal cholesterol levels, but rather make the claim that vegans have low cholesterol levels just because they avoid dietary cholesterol which falsely gives the impression to the viewer that all of the other contributing risk factors shouldn't be taken into consideration when in fact they should. A more careful examination of this study shows that other factors outside of diet affected the cholesterol levels of these individuals, not just diet (5). I do wish to end this video with saying that this isn't my overall view of Dr. Greger. This is just one example of how he promotes a bias towards veganism whether he realizes it or not. I'd say more so that it's unintentional because many of his videos just present the science as it is, leaving opinion aside. I also want to point out that this bias isn't limited to him...I'm subject to it, your subject to it - and we need to continually increase our awareness of it within ourselves and each other in order to develop a more accurate representation of what we define as being considered healthy in the role of nutrition, and validated in the role of science. First, your genetic structure of your rectus abdominus muscle is going to play the biggest part. You’ve probably seen all kinds of abs that look slightly different from each other. Some six packs are very thick and prominent while other abs look spread apart. Some abdominal muscles are perfectly aligned while others are uneven and not perfectly symmetrical. The differences in how the abs look, and ultimately the number of “packs” you can see is going to be determined by the formation of the linea alba. This connective tissue acts like a suture that pins down to the tissue below and acts to separate the rectus abdominus into compartments or the washboard that you are familiar with. If the linea alba is thicker than usual, you’ll have more spacing between the visible abs. If the alba is more prominently sutured down, for lack of a better term, then you’ll see deeper grooves between the abs. Of course, this can be influenced a bit by causing abdominal hypertrophy through weighted ab workouts as well. Whether or not the lower two, or 8 pack abs, show is going to be determined solely by the fact of the presence or absence of the linea alba extending down below the belly button. In most people, it does not. In some however, this connective tissue extends down and acts to further separate the abs into two more “packs” so to speak. Of course, that body fat better be really low if you want to see this since this is the first place guys tend to put on fat when they accumulate it on their body. Regardless of what ab workouts you’re following, if you want the lower two abs to show you better be doing some focused lower ab exercises as well. Due to the different nerve innervations that act to serve the abdominals, you can influence portions of the abs more than others (never isolate) based on the direction of the movement you’re doing. Top down ab exercises tend to hit more upper ab fibers while bottom up ab exercises tend to hit more lower ab exercises. Welcome to my channel and to this video, today I will teach you how to lower blood sugar without medication. Follow the step by step instructions to have great results. One gram (slightly less than a half teaspoon) of cinnamon per day was given to 60 volunteers with type 2 diabetes. In just 40 days, this small amount of cinnamon reduced fasting glucose levels anywhere from 18 to 29 percent, triglyceride levels 23 to 30 percent, LDL cholesterol levels 7 to 27 percent, and total cholesterol 12 to 26 percent. No advantages or greater improvements were found when larger doses were given. Also, when the participants stopped taking the cinnamon, their blood sugar levels and other readings began to return to former levels. A series of studies have shown that vitamin D levels are connected to insulin sensitivity and blood glucose levels. In a recent study, researchers at the University of California found that low vitamin D levels resulted in insulin resistance and improper function of the pancreatic cells that help produce insulin. If you, or your family, have a history of type 2 diabetes, insulin resistance, or hypoglycemia (low blood sugar), then adequate amounts of vitamin D are even more important. At least 30 minutes a day in the sunshine (without a sunscreen) would be helpful, and a daily multivitamin  that includes a minimum of 400 IU of vitamin D would be highly recommended.  This element may very well be the single most important supplement for the prevention of diabetes. Many authorities now feel that dietary chromium deficiencies may be directly linked to the development of type 2 diabetes, the type that accounts for approximately 95 percent of all diabetes cases. Chromium is required by your body to metabolize sugar (and fat). Without it, tissue cells become insensitive to insulin. With it, insulin becomes up to 100 times more efficient at getting glucose converted into energy. Chromium will help, though, only if your pancreas still secretes insulin. Chromium also doesn't seem to improve the efficiency of insulin given therapeutically. Studies have shown that 200 mg daily of alpha lipoic acid (ALA) can help reduce the kidney and nerve damage often seen in diabetes. One study found that 600 mg taken twice daily can significantly reduce the need for insulin. After a month of treatment, the ALA also reduced the fasting levels of lactate and pyruvate, and increased insulin sensitivity and glucose effectiveness.
