Robotic Hernia Repair - United Regional

01:43
Robotic Hernia Repair - United Regional --- If you and your surgeon decide that robotic-assisted hernia surgery is right for you, your surgeon will use a 3D high-definition camera for a crystal-clear and magnified view of your hernia. Your surgeon will sit at a console next to you and operate through a few small incisions using tiny instruments, including a camera. Your surgeon fully controls all instruments. Every hand movement is translated by the da Vinci® System in real-time to bend and rotate the instruments for a precise repair of your hernia. Hernia surgery used to be painful and often resulted in a slow, difficult recovery. But, not anymore. Thanks to innovations in robotic technology, surgeons are able to perform hernia repair surgery through tiny incisions rather than the large incisions associated with traditional open surgery. The result is less damage to surrounding tissues, less pain for the patient and a much quicker recovery—often within days. Robotic surgery techniques have been used for years to provide advanced treatment for cancer as well as urologic and gynecologic conditions. Now, general surgeons apply the same technology to other types of procedures, including hernia repair. Robotic surgery is used to treat all types of hernias, including: Inguinal and femoral (inner and outer groin) Umbilical (belly button) Incisional (previous surgery sites) Hiatal (reflux/GERD/upper stomach) Why is robotic hernia surgery a better option? Robotic surgery provides a number of advantages over traditional open surgery and standard laparoscopic procedures. While open surgery offers a full view of the abdomen and the ability to work freely inside the affected area, it requires a large incision through muscle and tissue. This type of incision can be more painful and take longer to heal. Laparoscopic minimally invasive surgery uses small incisions, but the instruments and surgeon’s visibility are limited. The robotic surgery system, which is controlled by the surgeon at all times, uses tiny instruments and 3-D cameras to precisely repair the affected area. The advantages of robotic surgery include: A small incision. An incision that is the about the size of a pencil eraser reduces scarring, recovery time, blood loss and risk of infection. Better visibility. Using a high definition, 3-D camera provides the surgeon with better visibility than laparoscopic minimally invasive surgery. Increased precision. The wristed robotic arms have a greater range of motion than a human hand. This allows the surgeon to maneuver instruments in ways that deliver the best surgical results. How patients benefit from robotic hernia surgery: Because of robotic technology, many patients experience significantly less pain after surgery and return to normal activity much more quickly. Robotic hernia surgery can benefit almost anyone. This includes first-time hernia repair patients and people who need hernia revision surgery. It’s appropriate for the most common to the most complex hernia procedures.

Dr Carolyn Dean June 4, 2018

01:56:56
This month Dr. Dean will be talking with ROBY MITCHELL, M.D. Roby graduated with honors from Texas Tech University School of Medicine in Lubbock, Texas. While attending Texas Tech, he was selected to be the first medical student in an exchange program with Jinan University Medical School in mainland China. This was Dr. Mitchell's first exposure to Alternative Therapies. Dr. Mitchell also studied Intensive Care and Emergency Medicine at the University of Alberta, Canada. While at Texas Tech, he was awarded a Fellowship in Cardiovascular Pharmacology and did Ph.D. work under the world-renowned Physiologist PKT Pang, Ph.D. Dr. Mitchell worked with Dr. Pang on the Patho-Physiology of Hypertension. Following his residency, Dr. Mitchell became an ER Physician. It was during this time that he developed hypertension and arthritis. Suffering from severe side effects from the prescription medications, he revisited the philosophies he had learned in China of biochemical rebalancing with diet and supplements and was able to improve both conditions. This led him to search for doctors trained in nutritional medicine. The first step was studying nutritional medicine with pioneer Hugh Riordan, M.D., in Wichita, Kansas at the Center for Healing Arts. Then, he studied Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement Therapy with Oprah's favorite Gynecologist, Christiane Northrup, M.D. In 1994, he attended one of the famous Wright/Gaby lecture series conducted by Jonathan Wright, M.D. and Alan Gaby, M.D. This was a pivotal point for Dr. Mitchell as he developed a lasting friendship with Dr. Wright as well as falling under his mentorship. Building on this foundation over the years, Dr. Mitchell has become an authority on Nutritional Medicine and Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement Therapies in his own right In addition to his many alternative medicine protocols, Dr. Mitchell has recently embarked on extensive studies on autism and has some promising information to share. Dr. Mitchell is also a true fan of magnesium and an even bigger fan of Dr. Carolyn Dean! With so much in common, this evenings broadcast will be just the right medicine for all our listeners!

Jemelle Holopirek with KAKE ( ABC - Wichita) interviews Dr. Jennie Johnson RN

03:05
Jemelle Holopirek with KAKE - (ABC Wichita) interviews Dr. Jennie Johnson about heart attack and stroke prevention. Most books written about the prevention of a heart attack and stroke are written by cardiologists. Their books primarily focus on the diagnosis and treatment of heart disease. Their lifestyle advice in almost all cases directs the reader to follow a restrictive plant‐based diet and exercise aerobically 30 minutes each day. There is no doubt that research has shown time and again that following this dietary pattern and exercise intensity absolutely works to improve risk factors and reduce risk. The problem is…very few people will actually be able to do it. Psychologist James Prochaska (creator of the Stages of Change Theory) found that only 20% of people have enough motivation to actively change their behaviors. The rest are mired in non‐action stages of denial, weighing the pros versus the cons are trying out baby steps at changing but not really committed to the change. Action oriented advice such as provided by most cardiologists falls on deaf ears. It’s too much, too fast. On the other hand psychologists write great books as well about motivation but include scant information on the disease process. Why would a reasonable person give up a behavior that they love if they didn’t have to? Understanding how the harmful behavior worsens risk factors and thus heart disease is a critical first step. In "Wake Up Call 911: It’s Time To Reduce Your Risk for a Heart Attack and Stroke" my goal was to combine what cardiologists have taught us about risk factors and heart disease with what we have learned from psychologists studying motivation. Further, it is written with a nurse’s voice in an easy to follow manner. Personal stories are peppered throughout the book for interest and to augment a point. Simple, realistic options for change are provided for the reader to consider. I agree with psychologist Brain Wansink that the best diet is the one that you don’t’ know you are on. That philosophy applies to other behavior changes as well. The changes need to be small in order for most people to begin to change their lifestyle. Throughout the book the reader is provided with tools to help overcome personal barriers to change. How heart attacks and strokes develop, the major risk factors for heart disease, understanding research and the best ways to work with your healthcare provider are also covered. The last chapter is written for healthcare providers to help them better understand what works to help their patients modify harmful behaviors. Nurses have tremendous insight and experience because we are at the patient’s bedside more than any other healthcare provider and we should write books as well, but we don’t… I counseled hundreds of patients to move toward a healthier life and studied motivation as the main focus of my dissertation research. That experience and voice were given to this book. The endorsements from leading cardiologists and psychologists have been humbling. They liked my storybook writing quality, simple explanations of complex medical information and accurate content based on the latest guidelines.

Baldness treatment: Cure for gray hair and baldness may have been found by accident - TomoNews

06:13
DALLAS — Scientists researching tumors may have accidentally found the cure for gray hair and baldness. A group of researchers at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center have identified two proteins, KROX20 and stem cell factor, which are responsible for hair loss and pigmentation in hair. Through experiments on mice, they discovered that hair shafts turn white when stem cell factor is depleted from hair cells. Hair loss is observed when KROX20 is removed from hair cells. “With this knowledge, we hope in the future to create a topical compound or to safely deliver the necessary gene to hair follicles to correct these cosmetic problems,” Dr. Lu Le, an associate professor of dermatology UT Southwestern, told the Wichita Eagle. Researchers will continue to study whether the two proteins stop working as people get older, which could also help explain why people age in general.

Killing One Bird with Three Stones | Aja Molinar | TEDxWichitaStateUniversity

13:27
"Killing One Bird with Three Stones" addresses the invasion of cell phones in our private lives, and how face to face communication is threatened by cell phone interruptions. With our fast-paced lifestyles and rapidly advancing technologies, we sometimes forget to stop and think about how our technology is affecting us. Aja is a junior at Wichita State University majoring in Psychology. She is a member of the McNair Scholars Program, and plans on applying to doctoral Clinical Psychology programs in the fall, where she would like to focus on anxiety and depression. With the advisory of the McNair Scholars Program and her mentor, she is currently researching differences in perceptions toward cell phone interruptions, and how anxiety may play a role in that perception. Apart from conducting research, her inspiration for psychology is stimulated through volunteering. She has volunteered through Amedisys Hospice and the Mental Health Association as a Compeer friend, in which she provides companionship for an adult living with mental illness. The friendship obtained through Compeer has helped secure her enthusiasm for helping others and has shaped her goal of becoming licensed to practice psychology. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx

Remembering cancer survivors and its victims

01:40
Volunteers have a lighthearted and purposeful mood while setting up for an event they hope will attract dozens and raise more than $40,000 for the American Cancer Society. "Most of the money we make goes to patients and research," says Sharon Vandenbos, chair of the event. She's been involved in the Relay for Life in Brooklyn Center for twenty-one years. She volunteers to remember the lives of two special friends, a brother and his wife, all lost to cancer. "When you walk around here and see the names, people lose it." Vandenbos is referring to the luminaries that are set up along the track, each inscribed with the name of a loved one who survived a battle with cancer or lost the battle. A ceremony is held to honor their fight. "The luminary ceremony is meant to tug at people's hearts," says Vandenbos. Maplewood Laser Dental Clinic Office Tour (Wichita Falls TX Dentist)

02:12
Learn more about Maplewood Laser Dental Clinic. Visit http://maplewoodlaserdentistry.com or call us at (940) 692-8100 In this video, Kim guides us on a video office tour of the Maplewood Laser Dental Clinic. Most dentists these days are branding their work as “Cosmetic Dentistry”. We do great Cosmetic Dentistry at MLDC, but limiting our focus to Cosmetic Dentistry would be a disservice to you. Dr. Guess believes in comprehensive dentistry because your oral health is an indicator of your total body health, and oral health directly affects your well being. We also believe in Laser Dentistry. Laser Dentistry is used to gently treat periodontal disease and gingivitis. Periodontal disease has been shown to have adverse effects on your heart health (cardiovascular disease), diabetes incidence, increased chance ofstroke, a role in inflammatory disease, osteoporosis, and low birth weight. We offer laser treatments for treating fever blisters before and after they erupt. This prevents the virus from multiplying and worsening, ending annoying discomfort and unsightly appearance. We also use lasersto prepare teeth for crowns and bridges, thus eliminating the need for all the “goop” in the mouth and triggering the gag reflex. The results are exact and amazing! We call it “Comprehensive Dentistry” to let you also know we treat all ages—from your first teeth and first visit all the way to replacing any broken or lost teeth. Dr. Guess offers a dynamic combination of advanced technologies in one convenient location. Many offices would refer you to several offices to accomplish the same care. We love to help you keep your teeth for a lifetime with state of the art cosmetic dentistry—tooth colored fillings, veneers, and porcelain crowns if needed. We can also replace missing teeth by placing and restoring dental implants, or with lifelike cosmetic Swiss Concept Dentures and Partials. Our crowns, partials and dentures are 100% fabricated in the United States and are the highest quality, natural in appearance, and best cosmetic dentistry available. We can even help you get better sleep. Dr. Guess has the expertise, with a DNA Appliance, to help you stop snoring and get you off of a CPAP machine. Dr. Guess and his staff would love to take care of you and your family. Come in and let us meet you! 3631 Maplewood Avenue, Suite 3 Wichita Falls, TX

Alan Desmond, AuD - Balance Disorders - Wake Forest Baptist Health

02:01
Dr. Alan Desmond is an audiologist at Wake Forest Baptist Health in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. He specializes in the treatment of balance disorders such as vertigo, dizziness and falling. Balance Disorders treatment at Wake Forest Baptist: http://www.wakehealth.edu/ENT/Balance-Disorders/Balance-Disorders.htm Request an appointment: http://www.wakehealth.edu/Request-an-Appointment-Online/ TRANSCRIPT: My name is Alan Desmond- I'm a Doctor of Audiology and I will be on the faculty as an assistant professor of Otolaryngology. My specialty is vestibular disorders and inner ear disorders for complaints such as vertigo, lightheadedness, dizziness, poor balance, falling, or fear of falling. I'm intrigued by the science aspect of how the inner ear works and how such a small part of the human body is responsible for so much as far as normal function and how much it can devastate someone's quality of life when it dysfunctions. Well my primary patient care philosophy is to be competent and be knowledgeable and give my entire attention to the patient- actually take what I've learned and be an advocate for the patient and make sure that they are getting the best care that is available to them. The best part of working with patients for me is to see the look of relief on their face when they understand that someone listens and understands what they're talking about. The second part that is really pleasurable to me is when they come back telling me that they feel a lot better that their treatment was effective and they're getting their quality of life back. Being a patient has made me understand that patients require two things to feel good about their visit: one is to know that you're compassionate, that you're interested in trying to help their problems; and the second is that you're competent, that you know what you're doing, that you're well-trained and that they're getting the best care available anywhere. Wake Forest, in my mind, is the best hospital in North Carolina- and one of the best hospitals in the country. And my co-workers are among the best people in their field anywhere. I am half Italian, but culturally, I am 110% Italian. Nobody comes to my house without a full belly and a glass of good red wine. An old saying in my house is: If you're in my house, I'm feeding you.

DeKalb Medical Physicians Group: Top Doctors at Gynecologic Oncology Specialists of Atlanta

03:20
DeKalb Medical Physicians Group Gynecologic Oncology Specialists of Atlanta – A state-of-the-art practice within DeKalb Medical’s North Decatur Campus specializing in Gynecologic Oncology. Two of metro-Atlanta’s top nine doctors in the field of gynecologic oncology as recognized by their peers and Atlanta® Magazine form the physician team at Gynecologic Oncology Specialists of Atlanta or GOSA. Joseph Boveri, M.D., and Cyril Spann, M.D., created the practice in 2013 with DeKalb Medical’s Physician’s Group after being professional colleagues and friends for over 15 years. Gynecologic Oncology Specialists of Atlanta offers two locations: one at 2675 North Decatur Road, and the second at 5430 Glenridge Drive in Sandy Springs. The physicians and their staff do all they can to take the stress out of a possible cancer diagnosis and the treatment to follow. “When a patient is given a diagnosis by their primary care physician that she might have a cancer or a mass, and calls us, we get her in the next day if possible,” said Dr. Boveri. Compassionate care follows that first phone call all the way through the patient’s treatment process. Dr. Spann says, “we have a wonderful front office staff, an attentive chemotherapy nurse, and a team of nurses second to none. We also regularly consult with a multi-specialty team of specialists with DeKalb Medical’s Cancer Center to provide the best care possible to our patients.” When women need treatment and a plan for managing a gynecologic malignancy, GOSA’s doctors and staff aim to be supportive, informative and restorative. Patients are able to promptly obtain a full range of diagnostic tests, including X-rays, CT scans, MRI and ultrasound at any of the DeKalb Medical facilities that are most convenient. When urgent medical care by a specialist is necessary, the team here can facilitate appointments and referrals for patients to one of the more than 775 physicians on the DeKalb Medical staff. Watch this video to learn more about GOSA and visit its website at GynecologicOncologySpecialistsofAtlanta.com

In most personal injury cases involving back and neck pain, the pain will be caused by damage to the soft tissues around the spinal column (muscles and tendons), and not due to herniated discs or fractured vertebrae. These soft tissue cases will be the ones most likely to involve a chiropractor, as medical doctors will most often only be able to treat them with anti-inflammatory and narcotic pain medications. Because long-term use of narcotic pain medication has too many downsides to list, many people seek alternative treatments — such as chiropractic care. My shoulder is sore from a car crash. John Reeves, M.D. - Neurosurgery

02:42
Dr. Reeves was raised in Shreveport and graduated from Captain Shreve High School in 1976. He graduated from LSU in Baton Rouge with a Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry and then entered LSU Medical School in New Orleans, graduating in 1984. During his residency he trained at Charity Hospital of new Orleans, Ochsner foundation Hospital and Harvard Children’s Hospital/Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston. Following that he moved to Switzerland to work with the premier cerebrovascular and brain tumor neurosurgeon in the world. During his medical training, Dr. Reeves was directly influenced by internationally-respected neurosurgeons who helped form his neurosurgical ethics and philosophy. - Dr. David G. Kline, Boyd Professor of Neurosurgery, with special interest in peripheral nerve surgery. Dr. Kline recruited Dr. Reeves as a student. - Dr. Edward Benzel at LSU School of Medicine Shreveport, who has influenced generations of spine surgeons. - Doctors John Shilleto and Michael Scott, at Harvard’s Children's Hospital/ Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston - Dr. M. Gazi Yasargil, cerebrovascular and brain tumor specialists, considered one of the two most influential neurosurgeons of the 20th century. After completing his training, Dr. Reeves moved to Wichita Falls, TX, a neurosurgically underserved area of the state. He practiced there for most of his career, only returning to Ochsner Hospital in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina for 18 months. He is pleased to return to his hometown to share his expertise. As a result of his broad training and experience, Dr. Reeves considers himself to be a careful and prudent physician and surgeon, applying his neurosurgical art when necessary, declining it when appropriate, or referring to other colleagues when the case demands. On a personal level, Dr. Reeves is married to Jamie Woodruff Reeves, who is a very fine neurosurgical nurse and coordinator. Many patients will meet her at the office or hospital. Dr. Reeeves has two wonderful daughters, Ashley, who is a medical student in LSUHSC New Orleans, and Hannah is a business major at LSU BatonRouge. Dr. Reeves enjoys the usual southern pastimes of fishing, golfing, fitness exercise, cooking and entertaining, and reading. And of course, he enjoys his dogs.
Small business owner makes economic development case for expanding Medicaid in Kansas

03:51
TOPEKA, KS - One of the witnesses before the Kansas Senate Public Health & Welfare Committee speaking in favor of the proposed expansion of Medicaid in Kansas under the Affordable Care Act is Amy Houston, a small business owner in Mulvane Kansas, mother of four boys, and cancer patient, who has been dealing with the difficult decision of what to do about affordable health insurance. Kansas' failure to expand Medicaid has made her situation precarious both personally and for her restaurant business and its employees. States like Kansas which rejected the Medicaid expansion are actually causing business owners like Amy (and others) to not be entitled to receive the federal help with insurance premiums envisioned by the ACA. This restriction penalizes the more financially vulnerable business owners and entrepreneurs in comparison to those business owners (and others) with slightly higher incomes who are entitled to receive federal advanced premium tax credits that directly subsidize their monthly insurance premium costs. Because of the coverage gap in the ACA caused by the continued failure of Kansas legislators to accept the more than 90% federal reimbursement for adding individuals like Amy to the Medicaid program, Amy has to figure out how to manipulate her business and personal "income" to make the personal income high enough to meet the threshold that qualifies her for the federal tax credit (the 'subsidies') portion of the ACA rather than the nonexistant Medicaid coverage. An income above the federal poverty line would allow Amy to receive direct federal assistance that pays for most of her health care premium through the Health Insurance Marketplace. An income that falls below the poverty line would qualify for zero premium coverage in an non-expanded Medicaid state like Kansas. In Medicaid expanding states, she and her four kids would receive no-cost healthcare coverage through the Medicaid program in those states. The expanded Medicaid portion of the ACA that Republicans in the Kansas legislature refuse to approve would provide health coverage at no cost to small business owners like Amy who can make less income than the federal poverty line, especially during the early years of the business. Owners' income can fluctuate due to a number of factors so fluctuations in income during a tax year can put them below the income level that qualifies them for insurance subsidies, effectively causing them to lose their insurance coverage. In many cases, an owner won't know what their income actually is until after the tax year is over. Taking the advanced premium tax credit which provides a subsidy to help cover the monthly cost of insurance premiums during the tax year puts a business owner at further risk in states that have failed to expand Medicaid. This risk occurs because of the perverse coversage gap which kicks in if the business owner's net income drops below the poverty line after the year's books are closed. Because individuals with incomes between 100% and 400% of the federal poverty line receive the federally distributed Premium Tax Credit during the year, by the time that the year is over and the actual income can be calculated, the tax credit advanced on the taxpayer's behalf to help pay monthly health insurance premuims has already been spent. States like Kansas which rejected the Medicaid expansion cause such business owners (and others) to actually be entitled to receive no help with insurance premiums. If a premium tax credit was used to pay those premiums during the year, and the tax payer actually falls into the Medicaid expansion "coverage gap," then he/she would be liable for repayment to the federal government of the advanced premium supports paid. These premium subsidy repayments at tax return time could be as much as $12,000 for a small business owner in his/her 50's (filing individually) who had a bad year and made less than $12,000 in income. This failure of Kansas to provide a safety net for hard working Kansas business owners like Amy who employ other Kansans negatively impacts the state economy and rural businesses according to Ms. Houston. Video was recorded by the Working Journalist Press on 2/14/18.
