Female Sex Hormones
Hormones are like micro SD cards—small yet powerful. They are tiny chemical messengers that are secreted into the blood by organs called glands. They are important for maintaining the internal environment of the body—as well as interpersonal communications and for many even a marriage can be destroyed over hormonal imbalance. The sex hormones are responsible for a lot more than just determining someone’s sex at birth. They are also responsible for maintaining and regulating the sexual cycle, onset of puberty and secondary sexual characteristics, moods, general health and even immunity. Types Of Female Hormones Estrogen and progesterone are two of the most important female hormones, but they are far from being the only ones working in sync to maintain a woman. Apart from them, there are other female hormones as well, which are working to regulate and balance the sexual cycle. These include: –Gonadotropin releasing hormone (GnRH): released from the hypothalamus, its function is to stimulate the production of the following hormones from the pituitary. -LH (Luteinizing hormone) -FSH (Follicle Stimulating Hormone) –Inhibin –Activin –Follistatin –Testosterone Puberty And The Menstrual Cycle The onset of sexual maturation and transformation of a child into an adult, is called puberty. There are a lot of changes in the body including its shape and size, as well as attainment of fertility. The onset of puberty varies in boys and girls, averaging the age of 13 and 11 years, respectively. Usually, girls attain every stage of puberty before boys. While inception of puberty is dependent most certainly on hormones, its onset varies among girls and can only be partly explained by racial, genetic and environmental differences. Hormonal And Physical Changes At Puberty Puberty is determined by the hormonal changes and the physical changes in the body. This occurs systematically and one step leads to another. Hormonal changes at puberty: The part of the brain, called pituitary, can release the brakes on gonad-stimulating hormones (FSH and LH) any time. This means that puberty onset is held in check by the Gonadotropin Releasing Hormone (GnRH) from the hypothalamus. Physical Changes At Puberty: -Breast development -Hair development -Onset of menstruation -Growth support -Weight gain -Fat distribution -Development of sexual organs -Acne -Being a teenager Menstrual Cycle: Start of the ‘period’ or menstrual cycle is the most prominent sign of puberty in girls. The mechanism of puberty initiation is poorly understood, but clearly, genetic, environmental and physical factors (such as body fat) have an important role. Nutrition is another factor whose role has been underplayed when it comes to sexual maturation; under-nourished children have delayed sexual maturation and late onset of puberty. Furthermore, anorexia is associated with amenorrhea (absence of menstruation) and a decrease in the levels of gonadotropins. Alternative medical approaches uses plant based or phyto-hormones to balance out the system. And the science behind this all revolves around salivary tests. We can measure your hormone levels by looking at the saliva. The saliva is what is called a ‘dialisade’ of the blood. Meaning that certain molecules diffuse equally between the saliva and the blood and fortunately progesterone and estrogen are in that category. The ideal ratio of progesterone to estrogen is about a 22:1. Most women are way out of balance, having low progesterone. Many women are self-prescribing and taking progesterone in the form of creams. After reviewing thousands of lab tests I can tell you this strategy frequently backfires, in some women progesterone levels from the creams can build up so high that the progesterone starts to convert into estrogen and creates the very problem the woman was trying to avoid. So you can induce an estrogen-related problem, and potentially estrogen-related cancers, by taking too much progesterone. The most difficult patients I have ever worked with are women who have been on progesterone cream for too long. It’s even harder to manage than women who are on excessive estrogen. Another treatment I’ve seen in the alternative medical community to treat menopause is the use of soy products. Soy has natural phytoestrogens in it that can help but if you’re intolerant or allergic to soy then it will cause digestive or bloating symptoms that will outweigh the benefits. Progesterone can be a good treatment providing it is combined with sufficient testing, with adequate follow-up. Instead of relying on remedies that seem to alleviate symptoms not curing the underlying issues. Can the hormones that keep us healthy and happy be the same hormones that cause emotional and physical distress? Our hormones are the most delicately balanced system of our bodies. Women with a healthy hormone balance tend to enjoy long, healthy and productive lives. Hormones coordinate the continuous biochemical activity that occurs in all of our cells in our body and brain. There are many different types of hormones in our body. Female Hormones, which originate in various glands throughout the female body, are found in the blood, where they circulate to continually bathe our tissues. Women's Health can sometimes be affected by many things. One such thing to affect a woman is Estrogen. Estrogens are some of the most powerful hormones in the human body. In their early 30s, most women begin to experience declining levels of estrogens and progesterone. With this decline, there is also a drop in fertility. In their early 40s, most women begin the climacteric, which is a period of more rapidly declining hormone levels leading up to menopause. The symptoms during this period become quite obvious. Ideally, in a woman's menstrual cycle, estrogen and progesterone levels should rise from the time of ovulation until just before menstruation. If the levels of progesterone are inadequate, then only estrogen rises during this time, causing many symptoms, such as low blood sugar levels, salt and fluid retention, blood clotting, fibroid and tumor development, increased cholesterol and triglyceride levels, allergic reactions, reduced oxygen levels in the cells, the retention of copper and loss of zinc. Low levels of progesterone also cause interference with thyroid hormone function, which may lead to weight gain and feelings of exhaustion. Testosterone also plays an important role in a woman's normal physiology. Women produce a small amount of testosterone, which is critical to the healthy functioning of most of the tissues in the body. It is responsible for a sense of well-being, sexual libido, and vital energy. Postmenopausal women commonly experience a decrease in the amount of testosterone in their body, which results in symptoms of decreased sense of well-being, a loss of vital energy, and reduced sexual libido. Here are the three types of oestrogen in your body: Oestradiol ( E2) – Checked through Medicare blood testing Estrone (E1) - not checked through Medicare Favourable oestrogen – Estriol (E3) - not checked through Medicare E1 and E3 are not tested in a blood tests, only E2 Oestradiol, therefore it is an incomplete picture as to why you may be suffering from elevated oestrogen levels. You can see a functional or natural therapist who works with hormonal balancing and test the levels of all of your oestrogen levels via a saliva test. This unfortunately is not covered by Medicare. High E2 and E1 levels in the body are associated with the risk of female cancers. E3 is thought to be cancer protective and a favourable ratio of this form of oestrogen is typically found in: Pregnant and breast feeding women A normal BMI Those who remain hydrated and exercise Those who eat lots of green leafy vegetables, low meat and processed food and low sugar diet Those with a healthy liver and have low intake of drugs, pharmaceuticals, chemical exposure or caffeine and or alcohol abuse Those who are not exposed to excess xeno- oestrogenic chemicals or plastics, found in take away food containers, nail polish, beauty and hygiene products, chemical cleaning agents, agricultural sprays and other xeno-oestrogenic products and chemicals Two compounds called Indol-3-carbinol and Calcium D glucarate can be used to metabolise excess oestrogen. Excess copper in the blood can bind to oestrogen and cause excess oestrogen. PMS and headaches, anxiety, heavy painful periods are all common with high copper. Serum copper and zinc should be the same level as each other between 15-18 n/molL from a functional medical perspective. Test for both these metals and make sure they are around the same level to treat hormonal imbalance. Peri-menopausal women tend to have higher oestrone to progesterone levels. This is because higher levels of progesterone is released after ovulation, so if ovulation is erratic or stops then this can cause a higher ratio of oestrogen to progesterone. This can be a common culprit for mood swings, tender breasts, hot flushing, headaches and weight gain during perimenopause and menopause. Lastly high cortisol, your stress hormone, can be a cause of elevated oestrogen. Deal with your stress. Acupuncture, talk therapy, yoga, other forms of regular (and not intense) exercise, mindfulness meditation and getting yourself to bed before 11pm are all useful strategies to lower cortisol when combating a stressful lifestyle. What few people know is that the body's natural hormones are far more powerful than drugs. They can even alter the expression of our genes. When you have good hormonal control this leads to experiencing the very highest capacity for human health.   Your body contains more than 100 different kinds of hormones. These amazing powerhouses pour into your bloodstream and supply your body with literally thousands of billions of units each day. When they are in good balance they help control heartbeat, encourage good sleep, manage blood pressure, maintain strong firm muscles, lubricate your joints, and even build good bones. Of course they influence the menstrual cycle as well as countering stress, relieving depression, and preventing fatigue. They can even help protect you from infections and allergic reactions. However, knowledge about what the body’s natural hormones offer and how important they are for high-level health has long been marginalized and hidden from popular view by information that is largely controlled by pharmaceuticals.   In last week's Sacred Video I tried to introduce you to bio-Identical hormones. We examined how the body’s natural hormone levels decrease with age and what effect this has upon our vitality, and what can be done to counter this. Now let’s look deeper into the wonderful mysteries of bio-identical hormones, where they come from, and how, with guidance from a practitioner well versed in their use, they can be used to restore strength and balance to the body regardless of age. We will also begin to explore how they can help improve all sorts of chronic ailments, including thyroid issues, menstrual problems, fibromyalgia, PMS, autoimmune disorders, and heart disease. And there’s a lot more to come.   But first, let me share with you some information about the huge health study identifying the failure of conventional HRT, which opened the doors to exploring natural, bio-identical hormones not long ago. A randomized, placebo controlled study conducted by The Woman's Health Initiative (WHI) involved 40 large medical centers in the United States and 16,608 women. It was designed to find out the benefits and risks of using conventional hormone replacement. Half of the women in the study were given HRT in the form of Prempro (Provera and Premarin) and the other half received no active drugs, only a placebo. Researchers wanted to find out if there would be increases or decreases in heart disease, stroke, cancer, hip fractures, and death due to any cause. The study was intended to last for 8.5 years. However, researchers were forced to halt it at 5.2 years. Why? Because it became evident that the overall risks of giving conventional HRT far outweighed the overall benefits and it would have been completely irresponsible to continue the study. For example, they discovered that there was a 29% increase in coronary heart disease in women given conventional HRT, a 41% increase in the incidence of stroke, and an incredible 2,100% increase in pulmonary embolism—blood clots in the lungs. Women in the synthetic HRT group also experienced a surprising 26% increase in risk of breast cancer.   Here’s the bottom line: Natural hormones are not only safer in the hands of practitioners who are knowledgeable in how to prescribe them but also more effective. This is why they are on their way, slowly but surely, to becoming a first choice in the treatment of patients who have need of hormonal help.   Now let's take a quick look at some of your body's major hormone glands and the natural hormones they produce. If some of the names seem foreign to you, don’t worry—in the next couple of videos they will become familiar to you. Here are some of your most important glands and a sampling of some of the natural hormones that they make:   In the earlier part of our lives, provided we have been eating well and looking after ourselves, we can enjoy hormonal abundance. Then, bit-by-bit, each one of us experiences some degree of glandular deterioration. With it comes an inevitable decrease in hormone secretions. There are other factors involved that influence this degenerative process too; for example, we live in an increasingly polluted environment. These things can cause a buildup in our glands, which causes damage to them.   There are all sorts of things that can place extreme stress on the glands and cause a drop in natural hormone production. Wrinkling of the skin, decreased vibrancy of the hair, and slow growth and cracking of the nails are common signs of estrogen deficiency. Bioidentical or natural hormones are safer than the synthetics, as noted above. Most doctors who prescribe hormones use a combination of what the ovaries used to make in the form of Estriol (E3) and Estradiol (E2)—Biest. Others use the three natural estrogens: E2, E3, and E0 (Estrone)—Triest. I do not recommend Estrone (E0), as it has been implicated in breast cancer. Additionally, the ovaries did make progesterone and a small amount of androgen. The androgen, or testosterone, is made mostly in the adrenals. It has been the neglected hormone in females. Testosterone should be included as part of a women's natural hormone formula. This is essential to normal sexual desire. It helps promote weight loss and improves the integrity of muscle and bone and exercise tolerance. Recently I have been prescribing Estriol as the only estrogen. It not only tends to prevent cancer, but also is anti-inflammatory. Soon E3 will be a patented drug used to treat multiple sclerosis, certain arthritic diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis and lupus, and in the future, allergies and atherosclerosis.
