Gluten sensitivity or intolerance is a condition that causes a person to react after ingesting gluten, a protein found in wheat, barley and rye. Symptoms vary widely and can include gastrointestinal problems, join pain, fatigue and depression. Celiac disease is a serious type of gluten intolerance. Classified as an autoimmune disorder, celiac disease causes damage to the small intestine. When those with the disease consume gluten, it initiates an abnormal immune response that directly attacks the intestines. Eventually, damage caused to the intestines significantly lessens the body’s ability to properly absorb nutrients. Here are 7 signs of gluten intolerance 1.Joint and Muscle Aches The inflammatory effects spurred on by gluten intolerance are the underlying reason for joint and muscle pain. Joint pain and inflammation are common symptoms of gluten sensitivity. And research does show links between the two diseases. The Arthritis Foundation has also published findings that link arthritis and joint pain with gluten sensitivity. 2.Skin Problems The mal-absorption properties of gluten intolerance affect a number of different areas of the body, including our largest organ. Gluten has been linked to acne, psoriasis, eczema, and Dermatitis herpetiformis. Skin symptoms deriving from gluten intolerance often include burning, redness, rashes, itchiness and even blistering.  3.Headaches and Migraines Migraines are often excruciatingly-painful headaches that can even be debilitating. Strangely, migraines are far more common in gluten-intolerant people that in the general population. In one study of a gluten sensitive group, 56% had chronic headaches or migraines. By comparison, just 14 percent of the control group reported chronic headaches or migraines. 4.Brain Fog Brain fog can be one of the more enigmatic symptoms, simply due to the fact that a number of things can cause it. However, it is a commonly-cited symptom of people suffering from gluten intolerance and Celiac Disease. Neurosurgery and Psychiatry, researchers discovered abnormal reactivity to gluten in a class of antibodies known as immunoglobulin. It is believed that this reaction contributes to diminished cognitive performance. 5.Unexpected Weight Gain The sudden, unexplainable weight gain is perplexing to many gluten-intolerant people. Generally, weight gain from gluten intolerance results from two things: (1) malabsorption and gut permeability and (2) systemic inflammation, which is triggered by gluten. Gluten-intolerant individuals that eliminate gluten from their diet are often able to revert back to a healthy weight level. 6.Abnormal Immune Function IgA antibodies, when one is sensitive or intolerant to gluten, have a counteracting effect on the immune system. Found primarily in the gastrointestinal tract and saliva, IgA antibodies are the body’s primary defense against colds, flus and other illnesses. Obviously, when these same antibodies counteract our immune system, we’re much more likely to contract such illnesses. 7.Dental Problems In a study published in BMS Gastroenterology, a link was discovered between gluten sensitivity and “aphthous stomatitis” – a condition often associated with recurrent mouth ulcers and canker sores. Furthermore, due to malabsorption, gluten sensitive individuals frequently have very low levels of calcium – a very important substance for healthy teeth.

Because many foods are made from these grains, including healthy foods such as cereal bars, gluten is widely found in our food chain. Knowing that gluten is, is an important step in improving your quality of life; however, some of the symptoms of a gluten allergy or intolerance are so common that many people don’t even realize they are allergic or intolerant to gluten. With Celiac Disease, the clearest symptom is anemia, which also damages the immune system. 7. Depression Gluten intolerance is also harmful to people who have depression because it intensifies the symptoms of anxiety, irritability, and sudden mood swings. 8. Skin Lesions For people who have Celiac Disease, skin lesions such as rashes, eczema, psoriasis and others, are very clear symptoms of the disease. These symptoms also appear in people with a gluten intolerance, but to a lesser degree. 9. Tooth Decay When the person has a gluten intolerance, the teeth are weakened and there is a greater chance of cavities. 10. Hormonal Disorders Hormones can also be severely affected in people with an intolerance to gluten. In cases of Celiac Disease, a very rapid increase or decrease in weight may be symptomatic of estrogen levels which are out of control. So periodic hormone-level tests are very important. What to do if you have Celiac Disease and/or gluten intolerance? If you notice more than one of these symptoms in your daily routine, the first step is to pay a visit to your doctor and ask him to order multiple tests. Ask specifically for him to run the test for Celiac Disease. After diagnosis, be prepared to eliminate gluten from your daily diet. If the symptoms are extremely bothersome, you can also do a simple test: Eat a gluten-free diet for a while and check for improvement in your condition. If you feel better, just confirm the diagnosis with the doctor so you can continue your treatment. What I wanna do is I wanna talk about gluten intolerance, gluten sensitivity, and true celiac disease and talk about how they're all interrelated. A lot of people seem to think that this gluten thing is just a fad, that people are going gluten-free because it's popular right now. But the reality is that there's some true science and some true physiology that proves that we're starting to have a bigger issue with gluten as a whole, and it all comes down to how our bodies respond to it in the first place and how wheat has changed over the years. But what I wanna do is I wanna help you understand the link between what is gluten intolerance, what is true celiac disease, and then what is a wheat allergy. Okay, they're all interrelated to some degree, but if you understand what's happening you might not be so hard on that friend that says he has an issue with gluten, even though he's not celiac. Let's break it down. First off, we have to understand why we're having so much of an issue with gluten these days. Is it the fact that it's just more so in the mainstream and we're hearing more about it? I'm sure to some degree that's true. I am sure there is some psychological effect that is causing more people to have a gluten reaction when they don't really have one. That's always gonna be the case. But the reality is that we have changed as humans. The over-consumption of wheat has led us to develop different processes in the body that cause us to have more reactions to wheat. When you consume one of the same foods for a long time, over and over, you do start to cause an issue within your body. But that's not even the issue I'm talking about today. The other issue is the hybridization of wheat. Now, say what you want about GMOs. Like them or not, I don't really care. The fact is this hybridization of wheat in particular has elicited a specific change in the proteins. You see, wheat now has new proteins in it. Approximately 5% of modern day wheat is entirely new proteins that our bodies don't even know how to assimilate or utilize we don't really have the enzymes to break those proteins down. That truly is causing an issue. We've hybridized wheat to make it a little bit more drought-resistant, make it bug-resistant, but also we end up doing specific things, like spraying Roundup on it, to dry it out faster so you can have more harvesting cycles. This causes some issues within our guts. But all that aside, let's talk about what's happening when you have a gluten intolerance. The first one I wanna talk about is non-celiac gluten intolerance. These are the people that whenever they consume bread or whenever they consume gluten starches, they just feel sick. They feel bloated. They feel really lethargic and they just don't feel good. I understand that there are people in this world who suffer health problems even worse than I did - but what i went though was very difficult and very mentally and physically draining. I am so happy to be back to my normal, healthy self! In this video we'll tell you the truth about your kp and gluten – and what you can do to clear your skin through your diet, so let's get started... A common question that we see from lots of people who have keratosis pilaris is “Can eating certain foods trigger my KP, cause an outbreak or make my KP worse?”. The answer is both yes and no, while it is not yet proven that eliminating certain foods from your diet will reduce you keratosis pilaris outbreaks or lessen your KP symptoms, there are some people who swear that this is the case because it worked for them as individuals. The reasons for this are normally if someone has an undiagnosed food allergy or food sensitivity, or if the person has celiac disease. People who have both keratosis pilaris as well as celiac disease may indeed have their KP get worse by eating foods that contain gluten (mainly wheat based foods). If you are diagnosed with celiac disease, then you will most likely be instructed by your doctor to go on a gluten free diet permanently. Another group of people who may see their KP symptoms improve by restricting themselves to a certain diet are those people who have both KP and either a dairy allergy or are lactose intolerant. When someone has both of these conditions, consuming milk or other dairy products may actually trigger outbreaks or make their keratosis pilaris become more frequent and / or worse. However, if you don’t have either of the above two conditions, than your KP symptoms / outbreaks may or may not improve just by avoiding these food groups. Just be sure to check with your doctor and be sure if your have either of these conditions before starting any type of specialized diet to treat your keratosis pilaris. Gluten Intolerance and Skin Rash Keratosis pilaris is often confused with or misdiagnosed as celiac disease. Although they both share some of the same symptoms, they are both commonly thought to have different causes. While celiac disease is inherited from your genetics, the jury’s still out on exactly what causes keratosis pilaris. In this episode of Abbey’s Kitchen, Abbey is hosting her favourite series: Toilet Talk. Abbey occasionally gets letters from her viewers and today’s question comes from Georgina who believes she is gluten intolerant. Georgina wants to know whether gluten intolerance is a real condition or just in her head? Abbey defines Gluten intolerance as the presence of gastrointestinal IBS like symptoms in the absence of celiac disease that seem to improve on a gluten free diet. The only way to test for it is to rule out a celiac and allergy of wheat, and to do a food elimination diet, so its ultimately a diagnosis of exclusion. Many early studies found some abnormalities in antibody levels of people who self-identified as having gluten intolerance that’s different from celiac disease. The problem with some of the early studies is that other components of wheat based products like fodmaps we talked about here, were not isolated or accounted for. Abbey shares two studies that did isolate gluten from fodmaps. In both studies, they couldn’t find a strong cause and effect relationship between gluten and digestive issues in patients without celiac disease. Abbey believes there are a few reasons why you feel better when you go GF. Cutting out gluten often means cutting out a lot of processed foods with a ton of added sugar, additives and saturated fats. If you were to continue to just eat donuts every day all day but just make sure they’re gluten free donuts, would you feel automatically better? Most likely not. FODMAPs stand for Fermentable Oligosaccharides, Disaccharides, Monosaccharides AND Polyols and are carbs found in a lot of grains and have been known to cause digestive issues for certain people. While most wheat foods would be eliminated on a gluten free diet, understanding that you have a wheat allergy rather than a gluten intolerance would allow you to enjoy so many more wholesome foods (think barley, oats, and spelt). Abbey is concerned that cutting out gluten means missing out on key dietary fibres, antioxidants, and B vitamins. Gluten free pastries and breads aren’t necessarily healthier than their gluten filled counterparts. They often have less fibre and protein, fewer beneficial nutrients, and more sodium, sugar and fat to make up for what’s removed. Abbey also states that lot of people on gluten free diets end up eating a lot of rice, and there been a lot of talk about arsenic in rice and rice-based foods. Obviously, safe in small amounts, but if eaten over time, there may be an elevated risk of chronic disease. Abbey recommends washing your rice thoroughly to reduce arsenic levels. Grains are one of the best sources of beneficial prebiotics (which Abbey has written about in detail here). Eliminating those beneficial prebiotics in grains may change the healthy gut microflora and increase the risk for chronic disease. The jury is still out on gluten intolerance and there needs to be more large scale studies larger to make definitive statements about its legitimacy. Abbey recommends speaking to a doctor and RD if you are experiencing any symptoms which you think may be attributed to gluten, or anything else before changing your diet. In the brain, Gluteomorphins can directly interfere with neuronal messaging by binding to the opioid receptors thus inhibiting the natural binding of neurotransmitters to their receptors.2 6 7 8 In addition, lymphocytes carry the same receptors on their own surfaces; therefore, Gluteomorphins can indirectly interfere with opioid receptors through lymphocyte secretion of cytokines and cause the delivery of wrong messages to the brain.7 8 If antibodies are produced to Gluteomorphin, these antibodies act like the natural opioids, on the lymphocytes and the nerve cells causing neuro-immune abnormalities. Thus, Gluteomorphin can disturb neuro-immune communication through neurotransmitters and cytokines. After the ingestion of wheat, some patient’s digestive processes break down the wheat into prodynorphin (PDYN) peptides. There are indirect mechanisms by which circulating PDYN could modulate brain function.3 If exogenous PDYN enters the blood stream cross-talk occurs between the exogenous PDYN and the endogenous PDYN.4 Exogenous PDYN can have agonist, partial agonist, or antagonist action at certain receptor types.4 PDYN also cross-reacts with enkephalins, which regulate nociception in the body. This was the talk that got the standing ovation and changed everyone’s eating habits for the rest of evening. Over the course of 15 minutes Dr. Rodney Ford, MB. BS. MD. FRACP, and a pioneer in the field of paediatric food allergies, convinced an audience of 500 that nobody is equipped to digest gluten. How did he do it? By using lego! Dr. Ford showed us the indigestible gluten protein is chased by the antibodies that our systems create to combat the gluten. Based on decades of research, Dr. Ford believes that abundant health can be achieved by anyone who eats the appropriate foods. Dr Rodney Ford, MB. BS. MD. FRACP, is a paediatrician and former Associate Professor in the Department of Paediatrics at Christchurch Clinical School. He is a specialist in food allergy and gastroenterology at the 'The Children's Clinic and Allergy Centre', Christchurch, New Zealand. Rodney's philosophy is “diet: not drugs” as he has seen too many people given medications for symptoms without first considering the possibility of food allergy or food intolerance. Rodney has been investigating adverse reactions to gluten for over 20 years and these illnesses have now been labelled “Gluten-related disorders” or Gluten Syndrome, with world-wide evidence accumulating that gluten may not be healthy for us all. Current Research on Oats There have been a number of research studies performed to evaluate the safety of oat consumption. Many of them report that components in oat proteins cause inflammation and elicit damage in patients with gluten sensitivity. Most recently, a study published in the European Journal of Nutrition found that some forms of oat protein triggered and antibody reaction. Another study published in the Scandinavian Journal of Gastroenterology found two varieties of oat proteins were responsible for increased intraepithelial T-cell density and IFN-γ production (both of these are signs of increased inflammation). In 2012 a research study was published identifying a... direct correlation of the immunogenicity of the different oat varieties with the toxicity of peptides present in their avenin sequences. In plain English please - Proteins in oat cereal stimulated an immune response similar to what is seen from wheat. The studies above were all published after Jan. of 2011. In medicine, it can take 20-30 years for new information to become common knowledge among doctors. So I don't expect that many physicians will be talking about the potential for oat to be a problem for those with gluten sensitivity. That being said, let's take a look at a comprehensive review of the medical literature that was published in 2011 compiling 75 studies published on the topic since 1953. The summary from the authors are quoted below: Oats in a gluten-free diet increase the diet's nutritional value, but their use remains controversial. Contamination with prolamins of other cereals is frequent, and some clinical and experimental studies support the view that a subgroup of celiac patients may be intolerant to pure oats. Thus, this issue is more complex than previously suggested. In order to produce oats that are safe for all celiac patients, the following topics should be addressed: selection of oat cultivars with low avenin content, research on such recombinant varieties of oats, development of assay methods to detect avenins in oat products, guidelines for the agricultural processing of oats and the manufacture of oat products, as well as guidelines for following up with celiac patients who consume oats.
