Looking for Cancer in a Blood Test

02:00
Imagine finding a single cancer cell among a huge sample of healthy cells. It's next generation cancer technology being used in the real world. "We now have a molecular test that can find one leukemia cell in like 100,000 normal cells. Very, very accurate. Which is fantastic way to follow patients," says Dr. Lowell Hart, oncologist/hematologist on Lee Memorial Health System's medical staff. Since leukemia is a blood cancer, it is logical to test for it in the blood. Now doctors are looking for ways to detect minute blood cells that have broken away from a primary tumor and are circulating in the bloodstream. They're called circulating tumor cells or CTC's. "Tumors will sometimes shed cancer cells in the bloodstream, sometimes not," says Dr. Hart. Prostate cancer patients may benefit from tests that screen for circulating tumor cells. "You put 7 1/2 CCs of blood through a flow cytometry machine and it's pretty accurate for picking out how things are doing. It's not good enough to diagnose the cancer for someone who walks off the street, but if a man has prostate cancer if that number of CTCs is going down you know they are responding to treatment. And if it's going up they're probably not responding," says Dr. Hart. For decades, doctors have relied on biopsies and snapshots like CAT scans to track the progress of cancer. This new line of blood testing offers a less invasive way monitor disease and find out what's working. "These tests will let us get away from doing so many CAT scans and giving everybody this radiation exposure. There really is tremendous effort towards making them more specific and being able to tell what's going on inside," says Dr. Hart. CTCs are used in three common cancers: prostate, breast and colon. "Both prostate cancer in men and breast cancer in women tend to metastasize. So if they travel and metastasize, they very often go to the bone and therefore to the bloodstream. Colon cancer a little less so," says Dr. Hart. It may be years away, but oncologists hope to someday diagnose cancer, through a simple blood test. Tracking cancer with a blood test

Blood tests that fish for either tumour DNA or cancer cells in patient blood samples are showing great promise. This type of blood analysis is helping Cancer Research UK scientists and doctors better understand the biology of cancer from its earliest origins to when it spreads around the body. And it has the potential to offer a new way of monitoring how patients respond to treatment, as well as how drug resistant tumours may begin to emerge. Often health care professionals conduct a variety of blood tests to determine if someone has leukemia. Leukemia patients often have decreased levels of platelets, white blood cells (WBCs), red blood cells (RBCs), hematocrit, and hemoglobin. Other tests such as bone marrow aspirations can reveal an increase in immature blast cells. Learn how health professionals classify leukemia by staining sample tissue with a dye and by looking for chromosome translocation. Created by Nauroz Syed. Leukemia blood test Subscribe My Channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCSQ9jXeLYjPBltSL9zCRvPQ Video Url: https://youtu.be/74YklAi4-KQ Blood samples for tests for CLL generally are taken from a vein in the arm. Complete blood count and blood cell exam peripheral blood smear The complete blood count CBC is a test that measures the different cells in the blood, such as the red blood cells, the white blood cells, and the platelets. This test is often done along with a differential or diff which looks at the numbers of the different types of white blood cells. These tests are often the first ones done on patients with a suspected blood problem. People with CLL have too many lymphocytes called lymphocytosis. Having more than 10,000 lymphocytes/mm³ per cubic millimeter of blood strongly suggests that CLL is present, but other tests are needed to know for certain. You might also have too few red blood cells and blood platelets as well. For the peripheral blood smear, a sample of blood is looked at under the microscope. If you have CLL, the blood smear could show many abnormal looking lymphocytes called smudge cells. Mononucleosis: Diagnosis

02:33
Mononucleosis: Diagnosis How is mono diagnosed? Because other, more serious viruses such as hepatitis A can cause symptoms similar to mono, your doctor will work to rule out these possibilities. Initial exam Once you visit your doctor, they’ll normally ask how long you’ve had symptoms. If you’re between age 15 and 25, your doctor might also ask if you’ve been in contact with any individuals who have mono. Age is one of the main factors for diagnosing mono along with the most common symptoms: fever, sore throat, and swollen glands. Your doctor will take your temperature and check the glands in your neck, armpits, and groin. Your doctor might also check the upper left part of your stomach to determine if your spleen is enlarged. Complete blood count Sometimes your doctor will request a complete blood count. This blood test will help your doctor determine how severe your illness is by looking at your levels of various blood cells. For example, a high lymphocyte count often indicates an infection such as mono. White blood cell count A mono infection typically causes your body to produce more white blood cells as it tries to defend itself. A high white blood cell count can’t confirm an infection with EBV, but the result suggests that it’s a strong possibility. The monospot test Lab tests are the second part of a doctor’s diagnosis. One of the most reliable ways to diagnose mononucleosis is the monospot test (or heterophile test). This blood test looks for antibodies —these are proteins your immune system produces in response to harmful elements. However, it doesn’t look for EBV antibodies. Instead, the monospot test determines your levels of another group of antibodies your body is likely to produce when you’re infected with EBV. These are called heterophile antibodies. The results of this test are the most consistent when it’s done between two and four weeks after symptoms of mono appear. At this point, you would have sufficient amounts of heterophile antibodies to trigger a reliable positive response. This test isn’t always accurate, but it’s easy to do, and results are usually available within one hour or less. EBV antibody test If your monospot test comes back negative, your doctor might order an EBV antibody test. This blood test looks for EBV-specific antibodies. This test can detect mono as early as the first week you have symptoms, but it takes longer to get the results. Treatment How is mono treated? There’s no specific treatment for infectious mononucleosis. However, your doctor may prescribe a corticosteroid medication to reduce throat and tonsil swelling. The symptoms usually resolve on their own in one to two months. Treatment is aimed at easing your symptoms. This includes using over-the-counter (OTC) medicines to reduce fever and techniques to calm a sore throat, such as gargling salt water. Other home treatments that may ease symptoms include: getting a lot of rest staying hydrated, ideally by drinking water eating warm chicken soup using OTC pain medications such as acetaminophen (Tylenol) Outlook and recovery from mono The symptoms of mono seldom last for more than four months. The majority of people who have mono recover within two to four weeks. An illness called chronic EBV infection can occur if symptoms last for more than six months. EBV will remain dormant in your blood cells for the rest of your life, and it can occasionally reactivate without symptoms. It’s possible to spread the virus to others through contact with your saliva during this time. EBV also establishes a lifelong, inactive infection in your body’s immune system cells. In some very rare cases, people who carry the virus develop either Burkitt’s lymphoma or nasopharyngeal carcinoma, which are both rare cancers. EBV appears to play a role in the development of these cancers. However, EBV is probably not the only cause. How can I prevent mono? Mono is almost impossible to prevent. This is because healthy people who have been infected with EBV in the past can carry and spread the infection periodically for the rest of their lives. Almost all adults have been infected with EBV by age 35 and have built up antibodies to fight the infection. People normally get mono only once in their lives.
CBC Blood Test # Complete Blood Count Test, By Harib Diagnostic Lab

Welcome to Harib Diagnostic lab we are providing Diagnostic Facilities Hematology Micro Bilogy Bio Chemistry Elisa Titel Name: CBC Blood Test #Complete Blood Count Test,By Harib Diagnostic Lab Link: https://youtu.be/x5I02ade9pE Test Overview A complete blood count (CBC) gives important information about the kinds and numbers of cells in the blood, especially red blood cells camera.gif, white blood cells camera.gif, and platelets. A CBC helps your doctor check any symptoms, such as weakness, fatigue, or bruising, you may have. A CBC also helps him or her diagnose conditions, such as anemia, infection, and many other disorders. A CBC test usually includes: White blood cell: White blood cell (WBC, leukocyte) count. White blood cells protect the body against infection. If an infection develops, white blood cells attack and destroy the bacteria, virus, or other organism causing it. White blood cells are bigger than red blood cells but fewer in number. When a person has a bacterial infection, the number of white cells rises very quickly. The number of white blood cells is sometimes used to find an infection or to see how the body is dealing with cancer treatment. White blood cell types (WBC differential). The major types of white blood cells are neutrophils, lymphocytes, monocytes, eosinophils, and basophils. Immature neutrophils, called band neutrophils, are also part of this test. Each type of cell plays a different role in protecting the body. The numbers of each one of these types of white blood cells give important information about the immune system. Hematocrit (HCT, packed cell volume, PCV). This test measures the amount of space (volume) red blood cells take up in the blood. The value is given as a percentage of red blood cells in a volume of blood. For example, a hematocrit of 38 means that 38% of the blood's volume is made of red blood cells. Hematocrit and hemoglobin values are the two major tests that show if anemia or polycythemia is present. Hemoglobin (Hgb). The hemoglobin molecule fills up the red blood cells. It carries oxygen and gives the blood cell its red color. The hemoglobin test measures the amount of hemoglobin in blood and is a good measure of the blood's ability to carry oxygen throughout the body. Red blood cell indices: Red blood cell indices. There are three red blood cell indices: mean corpuscular volume (MCV), mean corpuscular hemoglobin (MCH), and mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (MCHC). They are measured by a machine, and their values come from other measurements in a CBC. The MCV shows the size of the red blood cells. The MCH value is the amount of hemoglobin in an average red blood cell. The MCHC measures the concentration of hemoglobin in an average red blood cell. These numbers help in the diagnosis of different types of anemia. Red cell distribution width (RDW) can also be measured which shows if the cells are all the same or different sizes or shapes. Platelet: Platelet (thrombocyte) count. Platelets (thrombocytes) are the smallest type of blood cell. They are important in blood clotting. When bleeding occurs, the platelets swell, clump together, and form a sticky plug that helps stop the bleeding. If there are too few platelets, uncontrolled bleeding may be a problem. If there are too many platelets, there is a chance of a blood clot forming in a blood vessel. Also, platelets may be involved in hardening of the arteries. Mean platelet volume (MPV). Mean platelet volume measures the average amount (volume) of platelets. Mean platelet volume is used along with platelet count to diagnose some diseases. If the platelet count is normal, the mean platelet volume can still be too high or too low. Your doctor may order a blood smear test to be done at the same time as a CBC but it is not part of the regular CBC test. In this test, a drop of blood is spread (smeared) on a slide and stained with a special dye. The slide is looked at under a microscope. The number, size, and shape of red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets are recorded. Blood cells with different shapes or sizes can help diagnose many blood diseases, such as leukemia, malaria, or sickle cell disease. Sign and symptom of Blood cancer test to see if you have leukemia

03:59
Cancer that begins in blood-forming tissue, such as the bone marrow, or in the cells of the immune system. Examples of blood cancer are leukemia, lymphoma, and multiple myeloma. Also called hematologic cancer.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xRJVp7v3IEg&t=35s Leukemia, a type of cancer found in your blood and bone marrow, is caused by the rapid production of abnormal white blood cells. The high number of abnormal white blood cells are not able to fight infection, and they impair the ability of the bone marrow to produce red blood cells and platelets. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EUKkULoHMX0 Approximately every 9 minutes, someone in the US dies from a blood cancer. This statistic represents approximately 160 people each day or more than six people every hour. Leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma are expected to cause the deaths of an estimated 58,300 people in the US in 2017 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-aVeLbZrZSI The common symptoms of blood cancers can include: • Unexplained weight loss • Fatigue • Feeling weak or breathless • Easily bruise or bleed • Enlarged lymph nodes • Swollen stomach or abdominal discomfort https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uMjxDuFFZ00 • Frequent and repeated infections • Fever/night sweats • Recurrent nosebleeds • Pain in bones/joints https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SvP5lUhya1U • Itchy skin • Bone pain (ribs/back) • easy way to remember the common symptoms of blood cancers. • T – Tiredness and exhaustion • E – Excessive sweating • S – Sore bones and joints • T – Terrible bruising and unusual bleeding https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QqeR4Q9pBtU Other potential symptoms of leukemia Because some conditions coincide with the presence of the disease, the following may be signs of leukemia: Anemia: A low red blood cell count. Red blood cells carry oxygen around the body. This condition may contribute to weakness, fatigue or shortness of breath. People with leukemia often look pale because of anemia. Leukopenia: A low white blood cell count. A decrease in the production of functional leukocytes (white blood cells) weakens the body's immune defense, which can make you more prone to infections. Thrombocytopenia: A low blood platelet count. Platelets are the blood cells responsible for blood clotting. A shortage of bloods platelets may lead to easy bruising or bleeding. Swollen lymph nodes: In some cases, the signs of leukemia may include noticeable swelling of the neck, armpit or groin. This occurs when leukemia has spread to the lymph nodes. Enlarged liver or spleen: The build-up of abnormal blood cells in the liver or spleen may cause a feeling of fullness (loss of appetite) or swelling in the upper left side of the abdomen. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QqeR4Q9pBtU Thanks for watching Subscribe to my channel awareness and precautions video
Polycythemia Vera: Causes, Symptoms, and Diagnosis

11:01
Polycythemia Vera: Causes, Symptoms, and Diagnosis What is polycythemia vera? Polycythemia vera (PV) is a rare type of blood cancer in which your body produces too many red blood cells. Red blood cells carry oxygen throughout your body. When you have too many red blood cells, your blood thickens and flows more slowly. The red blood cells can clump together and form clots inside your blood vessels. If it’s not treated, PV can lead to life-threatening complications. Blood that flows more slowly can reduce the amount of oxygen that reaches your heart, brain, and other vital organs. And blood clots can completely block blood flow within a blood vessel, causing a stroke or even death. Long term, PV can lead to scarring of the bone marrow as well as leukemia, another type of blood cancer. There’s no cure for PV, but you can manage the condition with treatment. Your doctor will likely do routine blood draws and prescribe medication to help prevent serious blood clots. It’s important to talk to your doctor if you’re at risk of PV and have any of its symptoms. Learn more about PV and other blood cell disorders like it. Polycythemia vera symptoms PV might not cause any symptoms for many years. When symptoms first start, they can be mild enough to miss. You might not realize you have PV until a routine blood test picks up the problem. Recognizing the symptoms early can help you get treatment started and hopefully prevent blood clots and their complications. Common symptoms of PV include: fatigue itching trouble breathing when you lie down trouble concentrating unplanned weight loss pain in your abdomen feeling easily full blurred or double vision dizziness weakness heavy sweating bleeding or bruising As the disease progresses and your blood becomes thickened with more red blood cells, more serious symptoms can appear, such as: heavy bleeding from even minor cuts swollen joints bone pain reddish color to your face bleeding gums burning feeling in your hands or feet Most of these symptoms can be caused by other conditions as well, so getting a proper diagnosis from your doctor is critical. Polycythemia vera causes and risk factors Polycythemia vera occurs more often in men than in women. You’re more likely to get PV after age 60, but it can start at any age. Mutations (changes) to the JAK2 gene are the main cause of the disease. This gene controls production of a protein that helps make blood cells. About 95 percent of people with PV have this type of mutation. The mutation that causes PV can be passed down through families. But more often, it can happen without any family connection. Research is ongoing into the cause of the genetic mutation behind PV. If you have PV, your risk for developing serious complications depends on how likely you are to develop a blood clot. Factors that increase your risk of developing blood clots in PV include: a history of blood clots being over age 60 high blood pressure diabetes smoking high cholesterol pregnancy Blood that’s thicker than normal can always increase your risk of blood clots, no matter the cause. Polycythemia vera diagnosis If you think you might have PV, your doctor will first do a test called a complete blood count (CBC). A CBC measures the following factors in your blood: the number of red blood cells the number of white blood cells the number of platelets the amount of hemoglobin (a protein that carries oxygen) the percentage of space taken up by red blood cells in the blood, known as the hematocrit If you have PV, you’ll likely have a higher-than-normal amount of red blood cells and hemoglobin, and an abnormally high hematocrit. You may also have abnormal platelet counts or white blood cell counts. If your CBC results are abnormal, your doctor will likely check your blood for the JAK2 mutation. Most people with PV test positive for this type of mutation. Along with other blood tests, you’ll likely need a bone marrow biopsy to confirm a diagnosis of PV. If your doctor tells you that you have PV, keep in mind that the sooner you know, the sooner you can start treatment. And treatment reduces your risk of complications from PV. Polycythemia vera treatment PV is a chronic condition that doesn’t have a cure. However, treatment can help you manage its symptoms and help prevent complications. Your doctor will prescribe a treatment plan based on your risk of developing blood clots. Treatment for low-risk people Typical treatment for those at low risk of blood clots includes two things: aspirin and a procedure called phlebotomy. Low-dose aspirin. Aspirin affects the platelets in your blood, decreasing your risk of forming blood clots. Phlebotomy. Using a needle, your doctor will remove a small amount of blood from one of your veins. This helps reduce your red blood cell count.
Efforts to develop blood test that can identify single cancer cells

03:26
STORYLINE: It's early days yet, but work is progressing on a blood test so sensitive it can spot a single cancer cell lurking among a billion healthy ones. If successful it could revolutionise the detection and treatment of many types of cancer. Four big U.S. cancer centres will start studies using the experimental test this year. Scientists at Boston's Massachusetts General Hospital, who invented the original test, have joined forces with health care giant Johnson & Johnson to develop a third generation of the cell search technique, ultimately hoping to bring a version into mass production. Robert McCormack is the Head of Technology, Innovation and Strategy for Veridex, a division of Johnson and Johnson. He says that the new test builds on CellSearch technology, originally introduced in 2004, that counts cancer cells circulating in the blood. "This new technology that we are going to develop will do that and more, in that it will have enhanced sensitivity so that it can be applied to other cancers," explains McCormack, "But again it will allow for the automated characterisation of those cells to begin to identify targets for drug therapy." CellSearch is the only test currently on the market designed to find tumour cells in blood. But CellSearch can only give a cell count. It doesn't capture whole cells that doctors can then analyse to determine treatment regimes. Interest in trying to collect these cells soared in 2007, after Dr. Daniel Haber, chief of Massachusetts General Hospital's cancer centre and one of the test's inventors, together with his colleagues published a study of Massachusetts General's new test. It is far more powerful than CellSearch and traps cells intact. That means it requires only a couple of teaspoons of blood and can be done repeatedly to monitor treatment or determine why a drug has stopped working and what to try next. Stray cancer cells in the blood mean that a tumour has spread or is likely to, many doctors believe. A test that can capture such cells has the potential to transform care for many types of cancer, especially breast, prostate, colon and lung. Initially, doctors want to use the test to try to predict what treatments would be best for each patient's cancer and find out quickly if they are working. Ultimately, the test may offer a way to screen for cancer besides the mammograms, colonoscopies and other less-than-ideal methods used now. Dr Minetta Liu, a breast cancer specialist at Georgetown University, in Washington DC, is already using CellSearch testing and is hoping for advances in the technology. "We all recognise that the current tools that we have are not that exact and no matter what we try to do to predict how someone may do, we're not always right. So we are all clamouring for tools that will help us improve identifying patients who need treatment or who can finish treatment earlier, or do we need to be more aggressive in treatment?, or is this never going to come back? So to have particularly a test like this, which is a blood test, as opposed to putting a patient in a scanner with an IV and more contrast. We draw a lot of blood in our patients. To have an easier tool like this to use that is relatively easy on patients as well, would be a landmark. We're all looking for it," she says. Many people currently have their cancers diagnosed through needle biopsies. These often do not provide enough of a sample to determine what genes or pathways control a tumour's growth. Or the sample may no longer be available by the time the patient gets sent to a specialist to decide what treatment to prescribe. Doctors typically give a drug or radiation treatment and then do a CT scan two months later to look for tumour shrinkage. Graphic animation shows how blood test can detect traces of cancer DNA.This simple blood test is called liquid biopsy.Tumors are made up of cancer cells. When cancer cells die, they release DNA and other fragments that can get into the bloodstream. Liquid biopsies can analyze a blood sample for traces of cancer DNA. These tests can give early warning for the presence of cancer, or if it has recurred after treatment. Leukemia: What are the symptoms? | Norton Cancer Institute

02:38
Don A. Stevens, M.D., Medical Oncologist at Norton Healthcare, explains what leukemia is and the symptoms associated with this type of blood cancer. In general, symptoms of leukemia are ones that have to do with not having enough normal blood cells and if you don't have enough normal white cells you may present to your doctor with infections for example, chronic unexplained serious infections, fevers, chills. Then also because of the platelets can be affected a lot of times patients will present with bleeding or easy bruising. We sometimes see what we call petechiae, which is just a medical word for small red dot under the skin. We frequently will see that at least initially in the lower part of your body, say below your knees, ankles and feet. As the disease gets worse you may see those dots elsewhere but those petechiae again, small red dot under the skin, that is a symptom or sign of having low platelets which can be a symptom of leukemia, and then anemia, feeling bad, mallays, not sleeping well, sleeping too much. I mean, those are some of the things that we see with leukemia. Those are the acute leukemias and the chronic leukemias sometimes they're found in a routine blood test. So, some chronic leukemias don't have a lot of symptoms initially. Patients with chronic leukemia may be discovered in the emergency room when they're there for another problem or they may be discovered after a motor vehicle accident where you see something and say, hey you've got too many white blood cells or sometimes people will just go to their primary care doctor and over a period of time they will say you know, Mrs. Jones, last year your white blood cell count was a little on the high side, now it's a little higher and we need to look into it, even where they really don't have a lot of symptoms. One of the scary things about this disease is how quickly it can come on you and that's a hallmark of the acute form of leukemia. You can be very well, maybe a little fatigued, but for the most part feeling yourself and then three weeks later you can have difficulty with bleeding gums, you bump yourself on the kitchen counter and you get a huge bruise instead of a little one. You have these petechiae, these red dots on your legs, maybe blood in your urine and all that comes on real quick and it's just because of the rather rapid way that acute leukemia can compromise your production of normal blood cells. New Blood Test Determines Whether Cancer Treatment Is Working

01:05
According to UPI, a new blood test may be enough to determine if prostate cancer treatment is working, and allow doctors to change treatment faster if it isn't effective. In a new study published in the journal European Urology, researchers in England report a 30 percent drop in circulating tumor cells in blood samples can indicate the efficacy of prostate cancer treatment. Johann de Bono is a professor of cancer research at the Institute for Cancer Research and an oncologist at The Royal Marsden. De Bono said in a press release, "For too long patients suffering from advanced prostate cancer and their clinicians have had to face a frustrating wait to find out whether a new a new cancer treatment was working." Before the measure can be adopted for use in treatment, the researchers say larger studies are needed for confirmation, as are the results of other clinical trials regarding the benefit of earlier changes to treatment for unresponsive patients. http://www.upi.com/Health_News/2016/09/14/Counting-cancer-cells-in-blood-may-show-treatment-is-working/6281473860622/ http://www.wochit.com This video was produced by YT Wochit News using http://wochit.com

Blood test 'detects cancer relapse'.

02:50
Blood test 'detects cancer relapse'.-27-08-2015 A blood test may be able to save lives by finding cancers that have started to grow again after treatment, a study suggests. Scientists at the Institute of Cancer Research in London found traces of breast cancer eight months before doctors would normally have noticed. In the trial, the test found 12 cancers out of the 15 women who relapsed. Experts said there was still some way to go before there was a test that could be used in hospitals. Surgery to remove a tumour is one of the core treatments for cancer. However, a tumour starts from a single cancerous cell. If parts of the tumour have already spread to another part of the body or the surgeon did not remove it all then the cancer can return. Fifty-five patients who were at high risk of relapse because of the size of the tumour were followed in the study published in Science Translational Medicine. The scientists analysed the mutated DNA of the tumour and then continued to search the blood for those mutations. Fifteen patients relapsed and the blood test gave advanced warning of 12 of them. The other three patients all had cancers that had spread to the brain where the protective blood-brain barrier could have stopped the fragments of the cancer entering the bloodstream. The test detected cancerous DNA in one patient who has not relapsed.

Celery Boosts Your White Blood Cells and Starves Cancer

If you think celery is just a crunchy, low-cal vegetable, it's time to bring it more into your daily nutrition as a key part of your health support. Recent research has greatly bolstered our knowledge about celery's anti-inflammatory health benefits, including its protection against inflammation in the digestive tract itself. James Duke, Ph.D., author of The Green Pharmacy, found more than 20 anti-inflammatory compounds in celery and celery seeds, including a substance called apigenin, which is powerful in its anti-inflammatory action. Adding celery seeds to soups, stews or as a salt substitute in many recipes can boost the flavonoid content of these preparations. The antioxidant support we get from celery is largely due to its phenolic nutrients that have been shown to help protect us against unwanted oxidative damage to our cells, blood vessels, and organ systems. Starves Cancer As a cancer-fighting bioflavonoid, apigenin has also been studied in relation to breast and ovarian cancers. A University of Missouri study found that apigenin shrank a type of breast cancer that's stimulated by progestin, a synthetic hormone often given to menopausal women. The study's co-author, Salman Hyder, noted that apigenin slowed the cancer in three ways...inducing cell death, inhibiting cell proliferation and reducing expression of a gene associated with cancer growth. Blood vessels that feed cancer cells also have smaller diameters in apigenin-treated mice compared with untreated ones resulting in restricted nutrient flow to tumors, potentially starving the cancer and limiting its ability to spread. Meanwhile another study, this one at Rutgers University, found other anti-cancer compounds in celery called acetylenics -- which can actually stop tumor cells from growing. They suggest that drinking raw celery juice can prevent free radicals from harming your cells, which can stop cancer from developing in your stomach and colon. Celery also protects against free radicals and cell mutation. It enhances the delivery Because chronic oxidative stress and excessive inflammation are key risk factors for the development of many cancer types, it's not surprising to see scientists interested in the potential benefits of celery intake for cancer prevention. While we've seen speculation about celery benefits for stomach cancer, colon cancer, and bladder cancer, we've been unable to find actual human research studies in any of these areas. Hopefully, future research studies will address the potential cancer-related benefits of celery much more closely. Celery contains another compound, a phytochemical known as coumarin. Studies on coumarins show they're effective for cancer prevention, and are capable of enhancing the immune activities of certain lines of white blood cells. The high levels of coumarins in celery bolster the body's immunity and enhance the body's resistance to infection by stimulating white blood cell activity. Celery is chock full of vitamins and minerals, including vitamin K (good for blood and bones), vitamin C (an immune booster), amino acids, essential fatty acids, folate, iron, magnesium, manganese, phosphorus, potassium, selenium, zinc, vitamins A, B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, and E. 15 Reasons To Eat Celery Lowers blood pressure and tones your vascular system. Magnesium deficiency is known to affect your blood pressure. Celery is packed with magnesium, which can relax the muscle cells in your arterial walls. This dilates your arteries, allowing your blood more room to flow freely. Healthy flexible joints. Celery's anti-inflammatory attributes help reduce joint pain and swelling, which means it can help those suffering from arthritis, rheumatism, and gout. It also contains a diuretic that can help remove uric acid crystals from your joints. Asthma. Celery's high vitamin C levels can help alleviate asthmatic conditions. Colds/Flu. Vitamin C also helps prevent viral illnesses. Insomnia. Sleeplessness can wreak havoc on your health. For a good night's sleep, drink a glass of freshly-juiced celery with one tablespoon of honey before bedtime. This can help you relax into a restful sleep. Plus, its medicinal properties can work while you sleep. http://preventdisease.com/news/13/081913_Celery-and-Artichokes-Contain-Powerful-Flavonoids-That-Kill-Cancer-Cells.shtml

High White Blood Cell Count: What are the Causes?

06:56
High White Blood Cell Count: What are the Causes? White blood cells are vital components of the blood. Their role is to fight infection, and they are essential for health and well-being. If a person has a high white blood cell count, it may indicate that they have an infection and that the immune system is working to destroy it. It may also be a sign that the person is experiencing physical or emotional stress. People with particular blood cancers may also have high white blood cells counts. A low white blood cell count can signal that something is destroying the cells faster than they are being made, or that the body is producing too few of them. White blood cells account for approximately 1 percent of the total blood cells, and they are essential to normal immune function. White blood cells are also known as leukocytes. The white blood cells have a very important function in protecting the body from attack. This can be from bacteria, viruses, or other foreign substances that the body sees as some kind of threat. White blood cells are continuously produced in the bone marrow and kept ready within the blood and lymphatic systems until they are needed.

New blood test may detect lung cancer early, researchers say

SOUNDBITE (English): Professor William Jacot, Medical oncologist at Hopital Arnaud de Villeneuve, Montpellier: "My research is mainly about about distinguishing lung cancer and healthy people using blood samples, you know, and right now the main reason of the high mortality rate of lung cancer is the fact that there is no good treating methods to detect cancer in the early stages. And stage and treatment associated with early stage is the best way to prevent death of the patient and to cure it." 9. Jacot addressing delegates 10. SOUNDBITE (English): Professor William Jacot, Medical oncologist at Hopital Arnaud de Villeneuve, Montpellier: "My study was trying using a new proteomic methods to find different proteins in the blood of patients with cancer and of patients consuming tobacco and having developed lung disease, non cancerous lung disease. So in this preliminary data, because we need confirmatory study but you know preliminary data up to 97.5 percent of the patients were able to be correctly classified between lung cancer and benign lung disease. So it is very, very promising." 10. Pan of conference hall STORYLINE: A blood test to identify lung cancer in its early stages could potentially save millions of lives if initial results can be confirmed, researchers say. French scientists in Istanbul on Monday announced preliminary results from a new lung cancer test at the annual congress of the European Society for Medical Oncology, a meeting of some 10,500 doctors, scientists, pharmaceutical representatives and non-governmental organisations. The test distinguishes lung cancer from other lung diseases, such as emphysema. People who smoke develop multiple changes in their genes; both those who get cancer and those who get other lung diseases often have the same type of cell degeneration. But at a certain point, people who develop cancer exhibit different changes at the molecular level. The new test works by detecting proteins produced by cancer cells in the blood. Cancer cells produce different types and amounts of proteins in the blood, giving them a unique protein profile. Researchers theorise that such protein signatures might be spotted long before the symptoms of lung cancer appear - and before the disease would be detectable in X-rays - giving patients the possibility of early treatment and thus strengthening their survival chances. "The main reason of the high mortality rate of lung cancer is the fact that there is no good treating methods to detect cancer in the early stages," said Dr. William Jacot, the study's principal author and a medical oncologist at Hopital Arnaud de Villeneuve in Montpellier, France. Nearly 75 percent of patients diagnosed with lung cancer are caught only in the advanced stages of the disease, when the cancer has already spread to other parts of the body. The prognosis at this stage is usually poor, with a maximum of 16 percent of patients surviving for at least five years after diagnosis. But if lung cancer is identified early enough, patients can be essentially cured. Lung cancer is the most common type of cancer worldwide, with an average of two million patients diagnosed annually. Their test accurately identified lung cancer in nearly 90 percent of the specimens tested.
