Looking for Cancer in a Blood Test

02:00
Imagine finding a single cancer cell among a huge sample of healthy cells. It's next generation cancer technology being used in the real world. "We now have a molecular test that can find one leukemia cell in like 100,000 normal cells. Very, very accurate. Which is fantastic way to follow patients," says Dr. Lowell Hart, oncologist/hematologist on Lee Memorial Health System's medical staff. Since leukemia is a blood cancer, it is logical to test for it in the blood. Now doctors are looking for ways to detect minute blood cells that have broken away from a primary tumor and are circulating in the bloodstream. They're called circulating tumor cells or CTC's. "Tumors will sometimes shed cancer cells in the bloodstream, sometimes not," says Dr. Hart. Prostate cancer patients may benefit from tests that screen for circulating tumor cells. "You put 7 1/2 CCs of blood through a flow cytometry machine and it's pretty accurate for picking out how things are doing. It's not good enough to diagnose the cancer for someone who walks off the street, but if a man has prostate cancer if that number of CTCs is going down you know they are responding to treatment. And if it's going up they're probably not responding," says Dr. Hart. For decades, doctors have relied on biopsies and snapshots like CAT scans to track the progress of cancer. This new line of blood testing offers a less invasive way monitor disease and find out what's working. "These tests will let us get away from doing so many CAT scans and giving everybody this radiation exposure. There really is tremendous effort towards making them more specific and being able to tell what's going on inside," says Dr. Hart. CTCs are used in three common cancers: prostate, breast and colon. "Both prostate cancer in men and breast cancer in women tend to metastasize. So if they travel and metastasize, they very often go to the bone and therefore to the bloodstream. Colon cancer a little less so," says Dr. Hart. It may be years away, but oncologists hope to someday diagnose cancer, through a simple blood test. Often health care professionals conduct a variety of blood tests to determine if someone has leukemia. Leukemia patients often have decreased levels of platelets, white blood cells (WBCs), red blood cells (RBCs), hematocrit, and hemoglobin. Other tests such as bone marrow aspirations can reveal an increase in immature blast cells. Learn how health professionals classify leukemia by staining sample tissue with a dye and by looking for chromosome translocation. Created by Nauroz Syed. Tracking cancer with a blood test

Blood tests that fish for either tumour DNA or cancer cells in patient blood samples are showing great promise. This type of blood analysis is helping Cancer Research UK scientists and doctors better understand the biology of cancer from its earliest origins to when it spreads around the body. And it has the potential to offer a new way of monitoring how patients respond to treatment, as well as how drug resistant tumours may begin to emerge. Complete blood count and blood cell exam peripheral blood smear The complete blood count CBC is a test that measures the different cells in the blood, such as the red blood cells, the white blood cells, and the platelets. This test is often done along with a differential or diff which looks at the numbers of the different types of white blood cells. These tests are often the first ones done on patients with a suspected blood problem. People with CLL have too many lymphocytes called lymphocytosis. Having more than 10,000 lymphocytes/mm³ per cubic millimeter of blood strongly suggests that CLL is present, but other tests are needed to know for certain. You might also have too few red blood cells and blood platelets as well. For the peripheral blood smear, a sample of blood is looked at under the microscope. If you have CLL, the blood smear could show many abnormal looking lymphocytes called smudge cells. CBC Blood Test # Complete Blood Count Test, By Harib Diagnostic Lab

10:01
Welcome to Harib Diagnostic lab we are providing Diagnostic Facilities Hematology Micro Bilogy Bio Chemistry Elisa Titel Name: CBC Blood Test #Complete Blood Count Test,By Harib Diagnostic Lab Link: https://youtu.be/x5I02ade9pE Test Overview A complete blood count (CBC) gives important information about the kinds and numbers of cells in the blood, especially red blood cells camera.gif, white blood cells camera.gif, and platelets. A CBC helps your doctor check any symptoms, such as weakness, fatigue, or bruising, you may have. A CBC also helps him or her diagnose conditions, such as anemia, infection, and many other disorders. A CBC test usually includes: White blood cell: White blood cell (WBC, leukocyte) count. White blood cells protect the body against infection. If an infection develops, white blood cells attack and destroy the bacteria, virus, or other organism causing it. White blood cells are bigger than red blood cells but fewer in number. When a person has a bacterial infection, the number of white cells rises very quickly. The number of white blood cells is sometimes used to find an infection or to see how the body is dealing with cancer treatment. White blood cell types (WBC differential). The major types of white blood cells are neutrophils, lymphocytes, monocytes, eosinophils, and basophils. Immature neutrophils, called band neutrophils, are also part of this test. Each type of cell plays a different role in protecting the body. The numbers of each one of these types of white blood cells give important information about the immune system. Hematocrit (HCT, packed cell volume, PCV). This test measures the amount of space (volume) red blood cells take up in the blood. The value is given as a percentage of red blood cells in a volume of blood. For example, a hematocrit of 38 means that 38% of the blood's volume is made of red blood cells. Hematocrit and hemoglobin values are the two major tests that show if anemia or polycythemia is present. Hemoglobin (Hgb). The hemoglobin molecule fills up the red blood cells. It carries oxygen and gives the blood cell its red color. The hemoglobin test measures the amount of hemoglobin in blood and is a good measure of the blood's ability to carry oxygen throughout the body. Red blood cell indices: Red blood cell indices. There are three red blood cell indices: mean corpuscular volume (MCV), mean corpuscular hemoglobin (MCH), and mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (MCHC). They are measured by a machine, and their values come from other measurements in a CBC. The MCV shows the size of the red blood cells. The MCH value is the amount of hemoglobin in an average red blood cell. The MCHC measures the concentration of hemoglobin in an average red blood cell. These numbers help in the diagnosis of different types of anemia. Red cell distribution width (RDW) can also be measured which shows if the cells are all the same or different sizes or shapes. Platelet: Platelet (thrombocyte) count. Platelets (thrombocytes) are the smallest type of blood cell. They are important in blood clotting. When bleeding occurs, the platelets swell, clump together, and form a sticky plug that helps stop the bleeding. If there are too few platelets, uncontrolled bleeding may be a problem. If there are too many platelets, there is a chance of a blood clot forming in a blood vessel. Also, platelets may be involved in hardening of the arteries. Mean platelet volume (MPV). Mean platelet volume measures the average amount (volume) of platelets. Mean platelet volume is used along with platelet count to diagnose some diseases. If the platelet count is normal, the mean platelet volume can still be too high or too low. Your doctor may order a blood smear test to be done at the same time as a CBC but it is not part of the regular CBC test. In this test, a drop of blood is spread (smeared) on a slide and stained with a special dye. The slide is looked at under a microscope. The number, size, and shape of red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets are recorded. Blood cells with different shapes or sizes can help diagnose many blood diseases, such as leukemia, malaria, or sickle cell disease. What blood looks like down the microscope

07:04
Can you tell the difference between a monocyte and a basophil? Would you know what an eosinophil looked like if it came up to you and introduced itself? Where do platelets come from? If I have worms, what cells are responsible for killing them? All this and much more answered as Susan Anderson takes you on a tour of blood on a microscopic scale, teaching you how to identify red cells, granulocytes, lymphocytes, platelets, monocytes, basophils, eosinophils and neutrophil polymorphs and going through what each cell type is for. Don't miss this if you are a medical student or doctor taking early postgrad exams. Susan Anderson is Associate Professor of Surgery at the University of Nottingham, UK

5 Leukemia Signs and Symptoms You Should Know

10:17
Leukemia is cancer of the blood cells. Blood cells and platelets are produced in the bone marrow. In leukemia, some new white blood cells (WBCs) fail to mature properly. These immature cells continue to reproduce at a rapid rate, crowding out healthy cells and producing a host of symptoms. Leukemia is the most common type of childhood cancer, affecting about 4000 children a year in the United States. People often ignore the warning signs of Leukemia, until the problem becomes severe. It is important to be aware of these signs as addressing the problem early can save you from future complications. If you have multiple signs and symptoms of this health problem, ask your doctor to check your health levels. Here are some warning signs that you may have a Leukemia. 1, Abnormal Bruising. While most people don’t connect the two, bruising is a blood-related occurrence. Platelets, specifically, which are produced in the bone marrow along with white and red blood cells are mostly responsibly for the clotting of blood, which is what a bruise is, only under the skin. Have a low platelet count - or thrombocytopenia - is often the cause if you notice unexplained bruises or that cuts are not healing as quickly as they should. The connection between low platelets and leukemia goes right back to their source, and while one might not be indicative of the other, if you notice irregular bruising coupled with unexplained bleeding from the gums, in your stool or urine, or frequent nose bleeds, then we recommend you go see a health-care professional immediately. 2, Fever and Chills. The symptom of fever and chills is a common one with most infections or diseases of the body. Fever comes on when the body is trying to fight infection, as warm environments tend to be less hospitable for infection to grow. Chills come one as the body's way of trying to stay warm when it is cold, through the contraction and relaxation of muscles. Knowing that these two symptoms are often associated with other ailments poses problems for many in diagnosing as it often manifests as flu-like symptoms. If these symptoms persist - for a week or two - then it is advisable to make an appointment with your physician. 3, Night Sweats. Much like lymphoma and other types of cancers, leukemia sufferers have an incredibly difficult time regulating body temperature. This often results in a back and forth between fever and cold chills and excessive sweating - which usually presents itself at its worse during the night. While some might be thinking ‘how am I supposed to tell what I do when I sleep?’. the signs are all to apparent in the morning, for a person who suffers from night sweats will find their clothes, and bed linens often saturated with sweat. This symptom, like many others on this list might not be a cause for concern, in and of itself, but rather should be viewed in on a whole, coupled with other one to give you a better idea as to what's going on. It is also important to remember that self-diagnosis does little good, and if you feel there is an issue for concern, please see your doctor. 4, Petechiae. Petechia are when tiny red dots appear on then skin when capillaries - the smallest of the blood vessels - burst or bleed out. The reasons for this are multiple, but usually, it occurs due to excessive straining or pressure. Most people have experienced this symptom before, as it can often result from excessive crying or uncontrollable vomiting. Much like the previous point, this symptom is often a sign of thrombocytopenia, or low platelets count - which might be the sign of an underlying blood disorder, such as leukemia. 5, Abdominal Discomfort. The human body in many cases is the sum of all its parts. When one part is hurt, injured or infected, it can often have an impact on other, seemingly unconnected parts of the body. Leukemia and the spleen is an example of such an occurrence. The lymphatic system is a network of vessels, tissues and organs through which the body rids itself of waste and toxins, often from the blood. Knowing as we do that leukemia is a blood disorder, it makes sense that this system would be affected. In many cases of leukemia, the spleen can become swollen and distended causing discomfort in the abdomen as the organ presses on surround organs such as the stomach. This can also be a cause of appetite loss as well.

Early Signs that Cancer is Growing in Your Body

16:15
Don’t rely on routine tests alone to protect you from cancer. It’s just as important to listen to your body and notice anything that’s different, odd, or unexplainable. Here are some signs that are commonly overlooked: 1. Wheezing or shortness of breath One of the first signs many lung cancer patients remember noticing is the inability to catch their breath. 2. Chronic cough or chest pain Several types of cancer, including leukemia and lung tumors, can cause symptoms that mimic a bad cough or bronchitis. Some lung cancer patients report chest pain that extends up into the shoulder or down the arm. 3. Frequent fevers or infections These can be signs of leukemia, a cancer of the blood cells that starts in the bone marrow. Leukemia causes the marrow to produce abnormal white blood cells, sapping your body’s infection-fighting capabilities. 4. Difficulty swallowing Trouble swallowing is most commonly associated with esophageal or throat cancer, and is sometimes one of the first signs of lung cancer, too. 5. Swollen lymph nodes or lumps on the neck, underarm, or groin Enlarged lymph nodes indicate changes in the lymphatic system, which can be a sign of cancer. 6. Excessive bruising or bleeding that doesn’t stop This symptom usually suggests something abnormal happening with the platelets and red blood cells, which can be a sign of leukemia. Over time, leukemia cells crowd out red blood cells and platelets, impairing your blood’s ability to carry oxygen and clot. 7. Weakness and fatigue Generalized fatigue and weakness is a symptom of so many different kinds of cancer that you’ll need to look at it in combination with other symptoms. But any time you feel exhausted without explanation and it doesn’t respond to getting more sleep, talk to your doctor. 8. Bloating or abdominal weight gain Women diagnosed with ovarian cancer overwhelmingly report unexplained abdominal bloating that came on fairly suddenly and continued on and off over a long period of time. 9. Feeling full and unable to eat This is another tip-off to ovarian cancer; women say they have no appetite and can’t eat, even when they haven’t eaten for some time. 10. Pelvic or abdominal pain Pain and cramping in the pelvis and abdomen can go hand in hand with the bloating that often signals ovarian cancer. Leukemia can also cause abdominal pain resulting from an enlarged spleen. 11. Rectal bleeding or blood in stool This is a common result of diagnosing colorectal cancer. Blood in the toilet alone is reason to call your doctor and schedule a colonoscopy. 12. Unexplained weight loss Weight loss is an early sign of colon and other digestive cancers; it’s also a sign of cancer that’s spread to the liver, affecting your appetite and the ability of your body to rid itself of wastes. 13. Upset stomach or stomachache Stomach cramps or frequent upset stomachs may indicate colorectal cancer. 14. A red, sore, or swollen breast These symptoms can indicate inflammatory breast cancer. Call your doctor about any unexplained changes to your breasts. 15. Nipple changes One of the most common changes women remember noticing before being diagnosed with breast cancer is a nipple that began to appear flattened, inverted, or turned sideways. 16. Unusually heavy or painful periods or bleeding between periods Many women report this as the tip-off to endometrial or uterine cancer. Ask for a transvaginal ultrasound if you suspect something more than routine heavy periods. 17. Swelling of facial features Some patients with lung cancer report noticing puffiness, swelling, or redness in the face. Small cell lung tumors commonly block blood vessels in the chest, preventing blood from flowing freely from your head and face. 18. A sore or skin lump that doesn’t heal, becomes crusty, or bleeds easily Familiarize yourself with the different types of skin cancer —melanoma, basal cell carcinoma, and squamous cell carcinoma — and be vigilant about checking skin all over your body for odd-looking growths or spots.

New Blood Test Determines Whether Cancer Treatment Is Working

01:05
According to UPI, a new blood test may be enough to determine if prostate cancer treatment is working, and allow doctors to change treatment faster if it isn't effective. In a new study published in the journal European Urology, researchers in England report a 30 percent drop in circulating tumor cells in blood samples can indicate the efficacy of prostate cancer treatment. Johann de Bono is a professor of cancer research at the Institute for Cancer Research and an oncologist at The Royal Marsden. De Bono said in a press release, "For too long patients suffering from advanced prostate cancer and their clinicians have had to face a frustrating wait to find out whether a new a new cancer treatment was working." Before the measure can be adopted for use in treatment, the researchers say larger studies are needed for confirmation, as are the results of other clinical trials regarding the benefit of earlier changes to treatment for unresponsive patients. http://www.upi.com/Health_News/2016/09/14/Counting-cancer-cells-in-blood-may-show-treatment-is-working/6281473860622/ http://www.wochit.com This video was produced by YT Wochit News using http://wochit.com

Counting Cells with a Hemocytometer

06:31
There can be tens of thousands of cells in one milliliter of culture medium. So how are cells counted? The process requires diluting the cell culture, dying the cells, and loading the cells into a hemocytometer. A hemocytometer is a modified microscope slide with two chambers. Each chamber is divided into 9 squares. There are specific guidelines for counting cells within the squares. In this video, we'll demonstrate the process of counting cells using a hemocytometer. We'll also work through some of the typical calculations that accompany cell counting. Our hope is that after viewing this video, you will feel more confident and be better prepared to try counting cells in a hands-on lab experience. Practice using our FREE virtual hemocytometer: http://www.ncbionetwork.org/educational-resources/elearning/interactive-elearning-tools/counting-cells-using-hemocytometer This video was filmed on location at Rowan-Cabarrus Community College.

Efforts to develop blood test that can identify single cancer cells

03:26
STORYLINE: It's early days yet, but work is progressing on a blood test so sensitive it can spot a single cancer cell lurking among a billion healthy ones. If successful it could revolutionise the detection and treatment of many types of cancer. Four big U.S. cancer centres will start studies using the experimental test this year. Scientists at Boston's Massachusetts General Hospital, who invented the original test, have joined forces with health care giant Johnson & Johnson to develop a third generation of the cell search technique, ultimately hoping to bring a version into mass production. Robert McCormack is the Head of Technology, Innovation and Strategy for Veridex, a division of Johnson and Johnson. He says that the new test builds on CellSearch technology, originally introduced in 2004, that counts cancer cells circulating in the blood. "This new technology that we are going to develop will do that and more, in that it will have enhanced sensitivity so that it can be applied to other cancers," explains McCormack, "But again it will allow for the automated characterisation of those cells to begin to identify targets for drug therapy." CellSearch is the only test currently on the market designed to find tumour cells in blood. But CellSearch can only give a cell count. It doesn't capture whole cells that doctors can then analyse to determine treatment regimes. Interest in trying to collect these cells soared in 2007, after Dr. Daniel Haber, chief of Massachusetts General Hospital's cancer centre and one of the test's inventors, together with his colleagues published a study of Massachusetts General's new test. It is far more powerful than CellSearch and traps cells intact. That means it requires only a couple of teaspoons of blood and can be done repeatedly to monitor treatment or determine why a drug has stopped working and what to try next. Stray cancer cells in the blood mean that a tumour has spread or is likely to, many doctors believe. A test that can capture such cells has the potential to transform care for many types of cancer, especially breast, prostate, colon and lung. Initially, doctors want to use the test to try to predict what treatments would be best for each patient's cancer and find out quickly if they are working. Ultimately, the test may offer a way to screen for cancer besides the mammograms, colonoscopies and other less-than-ideal methods used now. Dr Minetta Liu, a breast cancer specialist at Georgetown University, in Washington DC, is already using CellSearch testing and is hoping for advances in the technology. "We all recognise that the current tools that we have are not that exact and no matter what we try to do to predict how someone may do, we're not always right. So we are all clamouring for tools that will help us improve identifying patients who need treatment or who can finish treatment earlier, or do we need to be more aggressive in treatment?, or is this never going to come back? So to have particularly a test like this, which is a blood test, as opposed to putting a patient in a scanner with an IV and more contrast. We draw a lot of blood in our patients. To have an easier tool like this to use that is relatively easy on patients as well, would be a landmark. We're all looking for it," she says. Many people currently have their cancers diagnosed through needle biopsies. These often do not provide enough of a sample to determine what genes or pathways control a tumour's growth. Or the sample may no longer be available by the time the patient gets sent to a specialist to decide what treatment to prescribe. Doctors typically give a drug or radiation treatment and then do a CT scan two months later to look for tumour shrinkage. Understanding Your Blood Counts During Chemotherapy

03:43
An educational video to help you better understand the potential effect of chemotherapy on your overall health. Welcome to 'Understanding Your Blood Counts During Chemotherapy', an educational program for patients with cancer and their caregivers. All cells in the body use DNA as a blueprint to divide into new cells that replace old, dying cells as part of the body's normal "wear and tear" process. Damage to the DNA could lead to rapid and out of control growth of cells. This is the hallmark of cancer. Many cancers can be treated with chemotherapy medicines that kill these fast-growing cancer cells. Unfortunately, chemotherapy also attacks fast-growing healthy cells, including those that form hair follicles, the lining of the mouth and stomach, reproductive cells, and blood cells. The temporary loss of these normal cells causes many of the side effects associated with chemotherapy. According to a recent survey of doctors, one of the most important side effects of chemotherapy is the impact on blood cells. To help you better understand the impact of chemotherapy on your overall health, in the program, you'll learn what blood cells do and how they are made, to help better understand the impact of treatment on your overall health. In addition to plasma, which is mostly water, salt, and proteins, the blood pumping through your body contains three main cellular components. They are: red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets. Each of these cells has a unique and important function. Red blood cells carry oxygen from the lungs to the body's muscles and organs and remove carbon dioxide, a waste product, away from tissues. Oxygen is critical to the health of your tissues and organs. Certain white blood cells fight bacteria that can cause infection by absorbing and destroying bacteria to help protect against infection. Platelets help stop bleeding by forming a clot and start the process of wound healing. Blood cells are continually renewed in a process that requires multiple growth factors made by the body. Your doctor will check your blood counts to make sure they are within a safe range. All blood cells and platelets are made in the bone marrow from unique cells called stem cells. The body's own growth factors direct these stem cells to divide and form carious kinds of blood cells. One growth factor, made in the kidneys, stimulates stem cells in the bone marrow to become oxygen-carrying red blood cells. Other growth factors in the body direct stem cells to make infection-fighting white blood cells, including neutrophils, the most common type of white blood cell. Stem cells also give rise to the cells that make platelets. This process is supported by the body's own growth factors. Certain types of chemotherapy can interfere with the natural process of blood cell production, lowering the numbers of red cells, white cells, and platelets. Low blood cell counts increase your risk of anemia, acquiring an infection, or having a bleeding episode. Talk to your healthcare professional about monitoring your blood cell counts during chemotherapy.

When Lung Cancer Is Diagnosed, Fast Blood Tests Can Help Save Lives

01:20
Researchers suggest in a new study that administering blood tests to lung cancer patients at the time of diagnosis may be able to hasten treatment decisions. Conducted by scientists with Gundersen Health System in Wisconsin, the study's authors stress the effectiveness of cancer treatment is dependent on timely information, and blood tests are an important reference. Lead author Dr. Jennifer Mattingly said in a press release, "Waiting for test results on biopsy material to determine the correct course of action can delay treatment for several weeks, sometimes months." According to UPI, researchers examined 17 patients who had been diagnosed with non-small cell lung cancer. Investigators used GeneStrat genomic test to target specific cancer mutations, and a VeriStrat proteomic test to provide prognostic information. The results were available within 72 hours, and were used to make treatment decisions and improve prognostic conversations with patients. Mattingly added, "The rapid and accurate results of these tests significantly decreases the wait time between diagnosis and treatment." The research was published in the American College of Chest Physicians journal CHEST. http://www.upi.com/Health_News/2016/10/17/Blood-tests-at-time-of-lung-cancer-diagnosis-may-speed-up-treatment/1591476731665/ http://www.wochit.com This video was produced by YT Wochit News using http://wochit.com

Rose taken to Bungoma Cancer Hospital for Breast Cancer tests

07:12
A BIG, BIG, BIG THANK YOU to Laurie and Tammy for facilitating breast cancer tests for Rose Nafuna, a 37 year old mother of six and an unemployed husband. The following things were done for her at the Bungoma Cancer Hospital - blood cell count test, breast physical exam, mammogram and ultrasound. Unfortunately the tumor in her breast was found to be malignant and it was recommended that she's URGENTLY taken to Texas Cancer Center in Nairobi for a biopsy and further treatment. This has to be urgently done as advised and we're praying that funds will be available to take her to hospital in Nairobi ASAP. I will personally take her there because she's never been to Nairobi or a big city. Rose and her husband had hoped it would be mastitis (which she has received treatment for in the last eighteen months but without any change) and when she was told she would be required to go to Nairobi she started crying. I told her what God has started He is faithful to bring it to completion and these words encouraged her. Please help Rose get the medical help she needs. Her six young children need her so badly. You can donate towards her medical fund through PayPal using our website www.killthejigger.org/donate.

Signs of leukemia in adults | low white blood cell count

04:04
Signs of leukemia in adults Subscribe My Channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCSQ9jXeLYjPBltSL9zCRvPQ Video Url: https://youtu.be/C-G6DqI8f08 In general, leukemia is thought to occur when some blood cells acquire mutations in their DNA — the instructions inside each cell that guide its action. There may be other changes in the cells that have yet to be fully understood could contribute to leukemia. Certain abnormalities cause the cell to grow and divide more rapidly and to continue living when normal cells would die. Over time, these abnormal cells can crowd out healthy blood cells in the bone marrow, leading to fewer healthy white blood cells, red blood cells and platelets, causing the signs and symptoms of leukemia. How leukemia is classified Doctors classify leukemia based on its speed of progression and the type of cells involved. The first type of classification is by how fast the leukemia progresses: Acute leukemia. In acute leukemia, the abnormal blood cells are immature blood cells blasts. They can't carry out their normal functions, and they multiply rapidly, so the disease worsens quickly. Acute leukemia requires aggressive, timely treatment. Chronic leukemia. There are many types of chronic leukemias. Some produce too many cells and some cause too few cells to be produced. Chronic leukemia involves more mature blood cells. These blood cells replicate or accumulate more slowly and can function normally for a period of time. Some forms of chronic leukemia initially produce no early symptoms and can go unnoticed or undiagnosed for years. The second type of classification is by type of white blood cell affected: Lymphocytic leukemia. This type of leukemia affects the lymphoid cells lymphocytes, which form lymphoid or lymphatic tissue. Lymphatic tissue makes up your immune system. Myelogenous my-uh-LOHJ-uh-nus leukemia. This type of leukemia affects the myeloid cells. Myeloid cells give rise to red blood cells, white blood cells and platelet-producing cells.
