B.5 Vitamins (SL)

02:18
Understandings: Vitamins are organic micronutrients which (mostly) cannot be synthesized by the body but must be obtained from suitable food sources. The solubility (water or fat) of a vitamin can be predicted from its structure. Most vitamins are sensitive to heat. Vitamin deficiencies in the diet cause particular diseases and affect millions of people worldwide. Applications and skills: Comparison of the structures of vitamins A, C and D. Guidance: The structures of vitamins A, C and D are provided in the data booklet section 35. Specific food sources of vitamins or names of deficiency diseases do not have to be learned.

Lab8 vitamin C and iodine titration

06:20
Overview of Iodine-vitamin C titration using 1 wt % starch as an indicator. 1% Starch Solution Recipe: Bring 1 L water to a boil. Prepare a 1% starch solution by first making a smooth paste with 10 g of soluble (potato or corn) starch and about 50 to 100 mL of deionized water. Pour the starch paste into 1 L of boiling water while stirring. Stir until dissolved. Allow the solution to cool to room temperature before use. Starch solutions have a poor shelf life and will form mold if kept too long. Fresh solutions work best. Use within one or two months. After Lab: Store in Refrigerator. Good starch solution will stay suspended for long periods of time. If solid settles out, it may not work that well.

Cirrhosis, Bile Salts & Your Microbiome

05:07
Take Dr. Berg's Free Keto Mini-Course: http://pxlme.me/-i717vtY or go here: https://www.drberg.com/how-to-do-ketosis Download Keto Essentials https://m.me/drericberg?ref=w2128577 In this video, Dr. Berg discussed the overview of cirrhosis, bile and the microbiome, all these are involved in bile production. Bile serves as an intestinal detergent which helps with digestion by breaking down fat into smaller particles. The pancreas then comes along by releasing enzymes to breakdown fats even further so it could actually pull in the fat soluble vitamins, the essential fatty acids, omega 3 fatty acids and the DHA. He also talks about the certain things that can happen that could interfere with the bile production. The microbiome helps recycle the bile and it is recycled 4 to 12 times in a given day. Things that can Interfere with Bile Production: 1. Gallbladder Removed – The gallbladder is supposed to concentrate the bile up to 20x. 2. Not taking enough Omega 3 Fatty Acids and Fat Soluble Vitamins from your Diet 3. Damaged Liver – Fatty Liver, inflammed liver(hepatitis), Scar tissue (cirrhosis) 4. Microbiome – Not enough bacteria in the gut (small intestine) Hey guys, today we are gonna give you an overview of your liver, bile and microbiome cause they all work together. These are the players that are involved in bile production. Let's just kind of start with what is bile. Well first of all, you have the fat oil and you have water, they don't mix too well. So basically when you consume food and some of that is gonna be fat, it is not gonna really breakdown in a water based situation. Bile is used as a detergent, it is an intestinal detergent. That's what it is, it is soap. So if you were to have a greasy hands and you wash it with soap, you would get rid of the grease. If you wash your hands without soap, it's gonna be real hard to clean them. So try to digest without bile, it's going to be really hard. If we actually take a look at oil, if I just open this up here and do my demo, pour in my bile detergent. Great I just kind of spilled all over my hand here. Keep it nice and clean here, so i poured my bile in there my detergent and then I go presto and just shake a little bit. Bam! look at that, it's all being emulsified right not. In other words, the detergent breaks down the fat particles and what happens is it breaks them down to smaller particles. Bile basically breaks down your fat and then you have the pancreas which comes along and releases enzymes to break it down even further so you can actually pull in the fat soluble vitamins and the essential fatty acid, omega 3 fatty acids and like DHA which is good for the brain. So that's kid of the function of a bile and so there's many different things that can happen that can actually interfere with your bile production. One is you have the gallbladder removed. So now you are not going to have a concentrated bile anymore. Normally with the gallbladder supposed to concentrate the bile upto 20x, so if you don't have the gallbladder, it is not concentrated, it trickles down from the liver and goes in your small intestine and then it basically doesn't its not concentrated so it is not gonna be as effective. You are gonna have an undigested fat. Dr. Eric Berg DC Bio: Dr. Berg, 52 years of age is a chiropractor who specializes in Healthy Ketosis & Intermittent Fasting. What Is Fecal Fat Stain?

01:48
This test is important to determine the presence of a digestive problem involving the metabolism of fats. Greetings, Eric Bakker, Naturopath, thanks for coming back. We're going to talk about the fecal fat stain. So this is often done by the doctor on the worst part of the stool analysis to determine if your body's digesting fats properly. So, you know, you will eat, typically, up to about 100 grams of fat for two or three days before the test and then a stool sample is taken to determine what the fat content's like. This is an especially relevant test for people who've had a gall bladder removed. Or who have IBS, Irritable Bowel Syndrome. Or any kind of, like, chronic digestive problem. But, also, it will show up darkly if you've got pancreatitis, if potentially you've got many different types of conditions there. As I mentioned, IBS, IBD, Pancreatitis. You really need to know this, it's important to understand if your body's digesting fats properly. If it's not, you're in for a lot of problems. Because remember, also, fat soluble vitamins get broken down and absorbed through this pathway as well. So, if you're passing of too much fat through the stool and not absorbing it, it can lead to deficiencies, fatigue, a whole raft of different problems. So, this is normally done as part of a comprehensive stool analysis. But, often it can be done by your GI doctor as a small stand-alone test; particularly if the gall bladder is being removed. A good thing to do yourself, regularly, is to look in the toilet bowl to see if there's any fat floating on the water after a bowel motion. Because that can alert you, also, to problems. And, sometimes just taking a digestive enzyme for a few weeks or a few months can sort the problem out. Sometimes, you might need to be on it longer. And other times, you may need to change your diet. But that gives you a bit of an insight into the fecal fat test. Thanks for tuning in.

Vitamin C, also known as L-ascorbic acid, is a water-soluble vitamin that is naturally present in some foods, added to others, and available as a dietary supplement. Humans, unlike most animals, are unable to synthesize vitamin C endogenously, so it is an essential dietary component. Vitamin C is required for the biosynthesis of collagen, L-carnitine, and certain neurotransmitters; vitamin C is also involved in protein metabolism . Collagen is an essential component of connective tissue, which plays a vital role in wound healing. World's Best Vitamin C - VitaCforte

01:30
Online: http://shop.drrath.com/products/dr-rath-vitacforte-synergy-formula Vitamin C is critical for optimum health and vitally important because humans are unable to produce it. They have to get it from their diet. Too little Vitamin C affects collagen production, can weaken your blood vessel walls, impairs brain function and affects your skin and bones. Many popular medications can deplete vitamin C or interfere with its transport through cellular membranes. Taking large doses of vitamin C in its acidic form as ascorbic acid is not practical and some may experience upset stomach when taking it. This is why we developed Dr. Rath’s VitaCforte, a unique vitamin C formula that works with your body, not against it! It’s synergistically selected and scientifically tested forms of vitamin C are gentle on your stomach and more effective in your body’s cells than most vitamin C formulas available. Dr. Rath VitaCForte contains: - Vitamin C as ascorbic acid, magnesium ascorbate and calcium ascorbate which are non- acidic and provide important minerals for the body. - Ascorbyl palmitate, a fat-soluble vitamin C which protects lipid-rich components like cellular membranes and lipoprotein molecules such as LDL and HDL against oxidation. It is also more biologically stable than common forms of vitamin C. - Citrus fruit bioflavonoids, which assure biological recycling of vitamin C and enhance its antioxidant protection. Scientific studies have shown VitaCForte has higher antioxidant potential, and better protection of cells exposed to oxidative stress. You can take Dr. Rath VitaC Forte daily with confidence that it is effective and safe!

Why Your Vitamin & Mineral Supplements May Be Useless.

02:18
https://atpscience.com/wholefood-vs-synthetic-vitamins/ https://www.webmd.com/vitamins-and-supplements/news/20131216/experts-dont-waste-your-money-on-multivitamins#1 https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/multivitamins-are-a-waste-of-money-doctors-say/ Synthetic Vitamins Man cannot duplicate what nature creates, even when the chemical analysis is identical. Most vitamin supplements are isolated chemical USP (United States Pharmacopeia) vitamins and minerals pressed together in a pill. The vitamins are produced synthetically from petroleum in chemical plants, while the minerals come from mining companies. Synthetic minerals are derived from rocks such as limestone, coral, oyster shell, sand, and chalk. Yum. Although these materials have mineral profiles, our bodies do not absorb them properly. Humans are not designed to digest rocks and oyster shells. Ideally, we should get all our minerals from plants. Plants absorb these minerals from soil and convert them to a form that is bioavailable to your body. However, because the soils are so deficient in minerals, even on organic farms, we need to take mineral supplements. It is best to take chelated minerals, which are minerals bound to amino acids, for maximum absorption. Many claim that synthetic vitamins suppress your immune system. Brian Clement, in his book, Supplements Exposed, claims that because of their synthetic nature, the body views synthetic supplements as foreign substances and launches an immune response. Foods and food-based supplements can cause immune system reactions as well. This is not necessarily a reason to avoid synthetic supplements and does not seem to harm your immune system in any meaningful way. For these reasons, I am in favor of using synthetic vitamins and recommend their use. Food-based vitamins are not always better absorbed. This is not the case with every person or every nutrient. We do absorb synthetic vitamins and minerals. Absorption depends upon many factors. When the body is presented with a synthetic isolate, it may need to draw on its stores of cofactors needed to absorb the vitamins, namely proteins, carbs, fats, bioflavonoids, enzymes, and other vitamins and minerals, but this is not always the case. While true at times, the body is very capable of absorbing a synthesized or isolated nutrient such as vitamin B or vitamin C, even if no other food components or cofactors are provided. If these cofactors are not available, a water-soluble isolate could be excreted and a fat-soluble isolate may be stored in fat, but for the most part the vitamin or mineral can be used. Due to this, the biological activity of synthetic vitamins can be reduced compared to their natural counterparts. The absorption issue is a stance many food-based supplements take as a reason to use their products, but this issue is really blown far out of proportion. Synthetics are absorbed quite well when taken with a meal. Many synthetic vitamins are poorly absorbed simply because they are bound together with cheap binders that don’t allow a release of the nutrients, not necessarily because the synthetic vitamins are themselves poorly absorbed. Truly health-conscious consumers choose to avoid artificial, unnatural and synthetic chemicals, but often — and unknowingly — consume these in dietary supplements. Misleading information on supplement labels is the most common reason for confusion about these ingredients. Consuming these potentially dangerous chemicals is much more serious than once thought. We should be concerned about taking synthetic vitamins and other unnatural nutrients because published research in the last few years concludes two important things: First, synthetic and other unnatural nutrients are mostly ineffective in preventing disease. Second, these chemicals may be dangerous to your health — some have been shown to increase the risk of death! Most of the studies show an increased incidence of cancer and heart disease, the reason for the increased risk.

It has other names such as ascorbic acid and has been called the most popular supplement in the world. It is essential because humans can not synthesize vitamin C and must obtain it from their diet. I'm just going to briefly summarize the things I think are worth knowing about vitamin C. Everything I'm going to say is evidence based with research to back it up. It is well known as a vitamin supplement taken to prevent the common cold. I looked up the data for this. A 2013 meta-analysis of 29 trials (n = 11,306) showed a small but significant 8 percent reduction in the duration of cold symptoms in adults regularly taking vitamin C supplements (at least 200 mg/day). In the general population it does not reduce the risk of developing a cold or getting sick. It does appear to have a protective effect in highly active individuals. In other words, the evidence is not strong that vitamin C is dramatically helpful in preventing or treating the common cold in most people. Vitamin C has not been shown to reduce the risk of developing cancer, cardiovascular disease or coronary heart disease, cataracts or macular degeneration SOURCES citric fruits, kiwi fruits, apples, vegetables, potatoes, leafy greens, and fortified cereals RECOMMENDED DAILY ALLOWANCE Males 90 mg/day Females 75 mg/day Should not exceed 2000 mg/day Vitamin C, also known as ascorbate, ascorbic acid, dehydroascorbic acid. It is a well known antioxidant. It has been associated with the common cold (acute coryza, adenovirus), head cold, nasopharyngitis, rhinopharyngitis, rhinovirus, scurvy, URI or upper respiratory infection. It is used by bodybuilders and weight lifters as a recovery supplement, it may help boost the immune system, helps with collagen synthesis, muscle building.

Why Spend Money on Vitamins and Minerals That Don't Provide Benefits

03:56
Popular vitamin and mineral supplements didn't provide any measurable health benefits to prevent cardiovascular disease, stroke or early death, according to a new study. The study published in the peer-reviewed Journal of the American College of Cardiology found no helpful or harmful outcomes for people who took multivitamins, vitamin D, calcium and vitamin C. Results were based on analysis of existing information, mainly published between January 2012 and October 2017. There were some exceptions: Folate and other B-vitamins (B6 and B12) did surface some minor evidence of reducing heart disease risk and risk of stroke, largely because of a Chinese study included in the overall research. Meanwhile, niacin and antioxidants showed a very small effect that might signify an increased risk of death from any cause. Authors note that participants involved in some of the studies, might not be representative of the general population. So, consult a medical professional before tossing or buying any recommended vitamins. The study was funded by the Canadian federal government and by food retailer Loblaw Companies. Generally, vitamin and mineral supplements are taken to add to nutrients that are found in food. Instead of opting for supplements, it is advised to consume needed nutrients through a more plant-based diet of less processed food. Existing trials haven’t shown that supplements can capture the nutrients in the same way food does, said an assistant professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School, who is not affiliated with the study. These findings suggest that people should be conscious of the supplements they're taking and ensure they're applicable to the specific vitamin or mineral deficiencies they have been advised of by their healthcare provider. It’s important for people to tell their doctor what supplements they are taking to be sure of no side-effects or risks. Also, because most supplements are not FDA-regulated, it is advised to be aware of other substances that could be included in the actual pills. Instead of relying on a multi-vitamin, consider making important natural health choices at mealtime. In addition, vitamins and minerals from food sources are usually more easily digested and used by the body than synthetic vitamins. Save money by buying fewer nutritional supplements. Buy only the vitamins whose requirements are difficult to meet at mealtimes. This isn't the first time medical professionals have questioned taking supplements. The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force has said there is insufficient evidence on benefits or harms of multivitamins to prevent cardiovascular disease or cancer and actually recommends against taking β-carotene or vitamin E. In 2013, a group of professors at John Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health told people to "stop wasting money on vitamin and mineral supplements." More research must be done to determine overall findings and they hope to look at links between vitamins and cancer outcomes in the future. MICRO NUTRIENT RECOMMENDATIONS 🍎🌽🍆🍓

04:01
This post will explain a little about micro nutrients and how we can best assure we are hitting our daily targets. When discussing micro nutrients we are talking about the nutrients our bodies need in only small amounts. Macro nutrients (fats, carbs, proteins) are usually consumed in grams whereas micro nutrients are normally consumed in milligrams. The micro nutrients can be split into two groups, vitamins and minerals. These can further be divided into micro and macro minerals, and fat soluble and water soluble vitamins. MINERALS Micro minerals are needed in smaller quantities then macro minerals. Calcium, phosphorus, potassium, sulfur, sodium, and magnesium are all examples of macro minerals. Some examples of micro minerals would be, zinc, molybdenum, iodine, selenium, and copper. VITAMINS Vitamins are either absorbed with the assistance of water or of fat. The fat soluble vitamins are A, D, E, K and are easily remembered using the phrase Adek. All other vitamins are water soluble, making it easy to remember. The water soluble vitamins also leave the body via water meaning when we sweat and wee, we are excreting these vitamins. Because of this these vitamins must be replenished daily and are more likely to be deficient in our diet when compared to fat soluble vitamins.
