South West Acute Hospital: one of the most modern hospitals in Europe

13:57
The Enniskillen Hospital is located 142 kilometres southwest of Belfast in Northern Ireland. With an investment of 276 million pounds, it is the first hospital awarded in a collaboration regime between the public and private sectors in Northern Ireland and which was awarded to FCC Construcción within a wide-covering investment programme for improving infrastructure in the United Kingdom. In May 2009, the Western Health and Social Care Trust signed a concession contract with the Northern Ireland Health Group Consortium, in which FCC Construcción is the major company with 39%, for the design, construction, financing and operation of the new Enniskillen Hospital. This consortium also includes these local companies: Allied Irish Bank Piv and Interserve Investments. FCC executed the works in three years. Queen Elizabeth II and the Duke of Edinburgh officially opened the new installations on the 26th of June 2012. It has 315 beds distributed in individual rooms over an area of 60,000 square metres. It provides the most modern clinical practices and cutting-edge technology intended to improve patient care. The new hospital includes a wide range of specialities for replacing and improving the services provided in Erne Hospital, which was dismantled when construction of the new hospital was completed. It includes a building for housing workers, a building with a child day care centre, offices and an energy demand management centre, which makes it one of the most modern hospitals in Europe, with respect to energy efficiency and design. Its design, consisting of three strips or lines of blocks, separated by linear gardens and patios, permits the optimisation of natural light usage: attaining 95% in the rooms; and ventilation, in addition to providing a constant visual relationship with the surroundings. The great challenge of the installation, which covers an area of 64,000 square metres, is that its 1,486 square metres of area intended to supply energy to the hospital have achieved a saving of two thirds of the hospital's consumption. The choice of natural materials, such as stone and wood and the cooperation of local artists make this hospital an ideal place for patient recovery. The installations include the most modern clinical means and the very latest technology in patient care, providing a wide range of specialities, above all, in maternity and emergency services. Outstanding features: • The Silver Green Apple Award. This is presented annually to construction projects that improve the construction environment or protect our architectonic heritage. • The ENR Global Best Projects Awards 2013 for Merit in the health category from the Engineering News Record magazine. • Presented with three prestigious awards from the International Design and Health Academy 2013, for the best large-scale health project, the best sustainable design and a mention of recognition in interior design. Balancing the benefits and costs of immunotherapy in the treatment of lung cancer

01:54
Rolf A. Stahel, MD, University Hospital Zürich, Zürich, Switzerland, reflects on advances in lung cancer treatment with immunotherapy. Although immunotherapy brings new treatment options and new hope to lung cancer patients, only about 20% respond to treatment. Many questions remain hotly debated by the oncology community: How to select patients who will benefit the most from treatment? Can we identify reliable biomarkers that will guide treatment decisions? In the absence of rational selection of the right patient for the right drug, should every patient be treated with immunotherapy? and who should cover the costs? Recorded at the 2017 meeting of the British Thoracic Oncology Group (BTOG) in Dublin, Ireland.

Improving the cancer care system

01:00:36
This session features four dynamic presentations that reveal how collaboration and innovation is helping to improve performance at the cancer service system level. 1. This presentation provides insight into a collaborative study between cancer services, general practitioners and a Medicare Local on socioeconomically disadvantaged populations that often experience poor cancer outcomes. Abstract title: Towards seamless cancer care: What do general practitioners need to facilitate better integration with cancer services? Dr. Andrew Knight, Fairfield Hospital 2. This presentation tracks a recent study undertaken by a team at Hunter New England Health, which looks at how colorectal cancer patients use the hospital Emergency Department; and questions the need for a new model of care. Abstract title: Is the Emergency Department the right place for me? Emergency Department utilisation by colorectal cancer patients, pre and post diagnosis. Donna Gillies, John Hunter Hospital 3. This presentation assesses the need for a 'report template' that both general practitioners and multidisciplinary teams can rely on when treating a patient with cancer. The benefits of such a report are discussed, including greater involvement by general practitioner in patient care, and more effective documentation of multidisciplinary team discussions and decision-making. Abstract title: Defining a role for general practitioners and patients in multidisciplinary team (MDT) decisions for cancer care. Alexandra Hawkey, University of Sydney 4. In 2011the Illawarra Shoalhaven Local Health District successfully implemented the MOSAIQ Oncology Information System, an electronic prescribing platform which aims to lower the potential for, and incidences of, medication error. Nina Mackay describes the project's journey, from set up and engagement through to recent outcomes. The project challenges are discussed and overall effectiveness in improving patient safety is revealed. Abstract title: Implementation of an oncology information system - the in-patient experience.
