Thyroid supplements (if used correctly) can help boost your thyroid function, help with weight loss and help you feel better. It takes over 13 nutrients to create thyroid hormone, convert T4 to T3 and sensitize the cellular receptors to T3. Many thyroid supplements cram all of these nutrients into a supplement and call it "good". This is the WRONG approach to take. Instead basing your supplementation off of the needs of your body is far superior. That means using lab work and other markers to find what nutrients you need in what doses. 9 Thyroid supplements that I find most hypothyroid patients are deficient in: 1. Vitamin B12 - Thyroid hormone is involved in the proper absorption of thyroid hormone. See the video for a complete list of symptoms. Repleting low vitamin B12 is best done through sublingual or intramuscular​ injections. 2. Adrenal support - Most thyroid patients also have issues with cortisol dysregulation. If you have advanced adrenal fatigue most patients do better on adrenal glandulars. For more mild disease consider using adrenal adaptogens. If your cortisol is elevated consider using phosphatidylserine. 3. Zinc - Low levels of zinc can cause issues with your skin and issue with hair growth. Adding zinc boosts immune function, T4 to T3 conversion and acts as an anti-inflammatory. Make sure to supplement with zinc bound to picolinic acid. 4. Iron - This is what I consider a "Goldilocks" nutrient in that you don't want TOO much or TOO little. Unfortunately, most doctors look for iron deficiency anemia and don't necessarily jus treat iron deficiency unless anemia accompanies it. Use these optimal levels to supplement with iron. 5. Magnesium - Hypothyroidism alters magnesium and low levels of magnesium can lead to issues like depression, anxiety and other changes like muscle cramps or restless leg syndrome. Replace low levels with magnesium glycinate, magnesium citrate if you have constipation or magnsium threonate if you have neurological issues. 6. Selenium - This nutrient is involved in the thyroid conversion process. Not only that but supplementing has been shown to reduce TPO antibodies and boost the immune system. In addition, using iodine with selenium can help reduce negative side effects. 7. Probiotics - Up to 20% of thyroid conversion happens in the gut and inflammation can reduce this number. Hypothyroidism sets up the gut for imbalances that lead to inflammation. Using probiotics can help improve your GI function. 8. Digestive enzymes - Hypothyroidism leads to low stomach acid which can predispose patients to malabsorption of certain nutrients. Using enzymes can help digest your food, increase nutrient absorption and if taken in between meals may promote the breakdown of immune complexes. 9. Iodine - If used correctly iodine can be helpful in boosting thyroid function. The thyroid hormone is made up of iodine moieties and low levels of iodine can reduce the amount of functioning thyroid hormone in the body. Can you use thyroid supplements to help you with weight loss? The answer is maybe and that it really depends. Some supplements work better than others, but you should never plan on only using supplements if your goal is weight loss. Why? Because it usually takes a lot more than just 1 or 2 supplements to help you lose all of your weight and feel back to normal. This should go without saying, but just keep it in mind. Having said that, there are certain categories of supplements which can help thyroid patients with weight loss. These categories include: #1. Supplements that increase T3. - T3 is king when it comes to weight loss. Any supplement which helps to promote more T3 may, therefore, help with weight loss. Certain supplements such as selenium, zinc, guggul, and vitamin A can help more than others. #2. Supplements that support your metabolism. - One of the most important things you can do to help with weight loss is enhance your metabolism. Certain supplements, such as protein powder, can improve your metabolism which may help. #3. Supplements which improve your gut function. - Probiotics, prebiotics, and enzymes can all potentially help with weight loss by influencing your gut microbiome. The bacteria in your gut influence how many calories you absorb and can even alter your hormones. In addition to using these supplements, you also want to make sure that you avoid certain supplements as well. Pretty much any supplement which sounds gimmicky is something that you will want to avoid. These supplements can actually do more harm than good, especially if you have thyroid disease. Video #2 in a weight loss with hypothyroidism video series. This video represents an actual hypothyroid patient from my practice who lost 40 pounds over 6 months with before/after pictures. You will immediately notice her changes in the picture above and I walk you through in detail how YOU can get these types of changes as well. Hypothyroid patients almost always have difficulty with weight loss due to a variety of reasons. Most patients wrongly believe that their weight loss problem is due primarily to a lack of thyroid hormone and that's where they are wrong. Low thyroid hormone by itself causes a slow metabolism but it also causes and encourages other hormone imbalances. Specifically, it leads to insulin resistance, leptin resistance, and even estrogen/progesterone imbalances. It is these changes that make future weight loss impossible. So that means focusing on thyroid hormone alone generally won't result in significant weight loss. Even adding on NDT or T3 to your regimen will likely result in 5-10 pounds of weight loss at MOST. Compare that to focusing on the other hormone imbalances and you can see the advantage in this case study above. I show you exactly how to test for the following hormone imbalances: 1. Adrenal related issues (checking cortisol levels) 2. Thyroid resistance (by checking free T3 and reverse T3) 3. Low testosterone (by checking free and total testosterone) 4. Estrogen dominance (by checking estradiol + progesterone) 5. Checking for leptin resistance (by checking fasting serum leptin levels) 6. Checking for insulin resistance (by checking fasting insulin and Hgb A1c) I also go over the treatment for each of these conditions and show you how the patient above was able to get these results. This particular patient has Hashimoto's thyroiditis, but this will also work for patients who have hypothyroidism. In addition,​ I go over how to correctly pick the right diet to allow for weight loss in this patient population. What Happened When I Took a Raw Thyroid Supplement

At first, it seemed like a true godsend, but problems started surfacing later. Then I did a blood test and realised that things were actually getting worse. The thyroid is a small, butterfly-shaped gland located at the front of the neck. (1) 2. Plays a role in metabolism, development, growth and body temperature. (1) 3. When not functioning properly, one can experience metabolism and weight problems, and even mood disorders, such as depression. (2) 4. How does the thyroid work? (3) a. The thyroid take iodine that you consume and combines it with the amino acid tryocine in order to convert it into the Thyroid hormones, thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3). b. T4 and T3 and then transported via the bloodstream throughout your body, playing a key role in a properly functioning metabolism, which is the conversion of oxygen and calories into energy. c. T3 is four times as strong as t4 d. Another gland, the pituitary gland, is responsible for communicating with the thyroid, essentially telling it when to turn on and turn off the production of T3 and T4. The gland is in turn regulated by the region of the brain called the hypothalamus. e. You must have a proper amount of iodine consumption in order to feed the thyroid and ensure proper functioning - either too little or too much can lead to a slew of health problems. Essentially, without iodine, the thyroid cannot function. 5. Back in the early 1920s the US added iodine in salt due to a nutritional deficiency of iodine leading to diseases such as goiter. This was due to people not consuming enough iodine rich foods. (4) . The problem with this is that the iodine in the white table salts is not the naturally occurring iodine and contains chemicals that are bad for our health a. Naturally occurring salts, such as pink Himalayan sea salts, contain trace amounts of iodine and do not contain the chemicals that are bad for our health b. Other naturally occurring sources of iodine are sea vegetables such as seaweed and kelp, cranberries (eat actual berries, not juice due to sugar content), organic yogurt, organic navy beans, organic strawberries, organic, raw cheese and organic potatoes. (5) c. If you supplement, be sure not to exceed 500 mcg of iodine daily from all sources. You can take natural supplements, such as kelp supplements. Otherwise it is good to take potassium iodide, which can encourage proper thyroid functioning. (6) 6. It is a good idea to speak with your doctor prior to supplementation to be sure that you do not take in too much iodine. Taking too much iodine is dangerous just as not having enough in your diet is. A compilation study from the Best Practice and Research Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism discussed the importance of keeping iodine levels “within a relatively narrow interval where iodine deficiency disorders are prevented, but not higher. 5 Tips for Weight Loss after Thyroidectomy: What your Doctor is Missing

Weight loss after thyroidectomy can be almost impossible unless you know exactly what to look for and how to treat it. It's considered "normal" to gain 20 pounds after thyroidectomy and Doctors tell patients that this is normal and in the same breath then say that the thyroid isn't causing the weight gain. How can this be? It is possible to lose weight after thyroidectomy but it takes a very different approach. Eating less and exercising more will NOT lead to significant weight loss if you've had a thyroidectomy or your thyroid ablated with radioactive iodine. Instead you need to be focusing on hormone imbalances that lead to weight gain. I've also included a diet guide to follow in addition to the following 5 tips which I explain in detail in the video. 5 Tips for weight loss after thyroidectomy: 1. Get on the right type and dose of thyroid medication - for most patients this means a combination of T3 and T4. So medications like cytomel or liothyronine in addition to levothyroxine/synthroid or the use of natural desiccated thyroid (NDT) will most likely be necessary. 2. Increase your free T3 - you need to be doing whatever is in your power to naturally increase your free T3. The more t3 you can in your system the higher your metabolism will be and the more weight you will lose. 3. Balance all other hormones in the body - I list several hormones, but the main ones I want you to focus on are insulin resistance and leptin resistance. Until these 2 are treated it will be almost impossible for you to lose weight. 4. Be strict with your diet but don't restrict calories - one of the worst things you can do is restrict your calories down to 1,000-1,200 calories per day. T3 and Thyroid Problems You can also ask your doctor if you need T3 besides the typical treatment of levothyroxine. If your leptin levels are greater than 12 then you need to consider treatment with a GLP-1 agonist. Remember that thyroid resistance and leptin resistance go together! 3. Reverse Estrogen dominance if present (or low progesterone) - Remember to use urine testing for these hormones so that you can find ALL metabolites and figure out which step is blocked in your body. If necessary you may need to consider using bio-identical progesterone cream (link above). 4. Treat low testosterone if present - Low testosterone can cause weight gain, mood changes and low energy. Many women who suffer from insulin resistance ALSO suffer from low testosterone. 5. Adrenal fatigue and elevated cortisol levels - High levels of adrenal hormones (cortisol) can cause weight gain and lead to constant fatigue.
