Comment, like, share this story. For as long as she can remember, Lucie has always been somewhat chubby, and on the short side for her age. And when she was younger she didn't think much of it, and neither did anyone else. It just felt normal, and nobody treated her like a fat girl. But as she got older she noticed that the people she had always been around at school were thinning down and getting taller, maybe losing weight, but mostly just growing up. And she wasn't getting much taller, wasn't thinning down, and ended up feeling just like a short, plump, thirteen year old girl - the fat girl. And then things began to go downhill. Things got so bad, so fast, that it surprised and shocked her to be walking down the street and here people say things about her, call her "fatty" or other names, or give her strange looks. Of course school was where she spent most of her time and that is where the teasing and name calling really got out of hand. She would be called "fat," and "unattractive" right to her face, and this really got to her. She got sad, depressed and low self esteem. Depression too a tole on her. She was having trouble with her weight, and couldn't fit into the clothes she really wanted to be wearing. It also got in the way of the friendships she had had for so long. She felt like she couldn't communicate with her friends honestly and wouldn't let herself do things with them that would put her out there for ridicule and bullying. Like if they asked her to go to a pool party with them she would always reject it and make an excuse not to go. She was too self conscious to put a bathing suit on in front of anyone she knew, especially her classmates. It got to the point where she truly hated her own body. She has stretch marks and so she has changed the way she dresses, always bundling up in big bulky clothes, even in the Summer. And she never goes swimming or to the beach anymore like she used to. Autumn and Winter are her favorite seasons, of course, because it's natural to cover up more and wear larger clothes. It makes her feel safer going out like that, and it's true, she doesn't get called the fat girl as often in those seasons, and not as many weird looks. But no matter what the season, when she's around people at school she still feels weird and uncomfortable - so tired of being the fat girl - they all are wearing skinny jeans and little skirts and t-shirts while she is out and about with baggy leggings or jeans and big long sleeved t's or hoodies. She's hiding inside her clothes really, just to feel a little more comfortable out with kids her own age. She's tried a bunch of diets and weight loss approaches, but it's really hard to stick with them because every time someone calls her the fat girl or some other mean name, she just goes back to the food as a comfort. With exercise too she has had a hard time because she has pretty bad asthma which makes it difficult to breathe and then her frustration, and how tired she is from all the dieting and exercising, she'll just break down, and then that makes her asthma worse, and it just goes around and around. Lucie's mom has been an amazing help and support, and really comforting, and helps her stay and feel strong and positive. But lately it's been harder and harder to stay positive. She kind of hates herself sometimes and is so tired of being the fat girl. Discrimination. It's hard, and the name calling continues and some days are harder than others. BUT, ultimately, Lucie knows that she will lose the weight someday, and she knows that staying positive, and trying hard all the time, will pay off for her. Can belly fat be a problem even for people who aren't overweight? New research says yes, excess weight around the middle boosts the risk of premature death even for people considered normal weight. As you remember, previous research says that obesity was the secondary killer disease especially among children's. But the recent study published in an article in the Annals of Internal Medicine concludes that people of normal weight who have a “spare tire” around their middle body have a greater mortality risk than those who are overweight or obese. Belly fat has been linked to high cholesterol, inflammation, heart disease, stroke and diabetes, experts says. The fat around our waists foretell our fate more accurately than our overall body mass index (BMI), a conclusion reached by Dr. Francisco Lopez-Jimenez, a specialist in cardiovascular diseases at the Mayo Clinic. Dr. Lopez-Jimenez and his team found that supposedly skinny adults with elevated levels of abdominal fat had a greater risk of mortality than overweight or obese individuals whose fat was distributed normally across their body. These skinny spare tires were also considered the worst off in terms of long term survival compared to anyone else. While excess body fat is tied to a myriad of health concerns, abdominal fat is believed to be especially worrisome in part because it triggers systemic inflammation throughout the body, which then leads to greater stress on the heart and elsewhere. Too much belly fat is labeled central obesity. In this latest study, for example, the researchers found that in normal-weight men with central obesity, their mortality risk was noticeably higher than even obese men who also had central obesity . On the other hand, obese women with central obesity had a slightly higher mortality risk than normal-weight women with central obesity. In addition to excess visceral fat, the authors speculate that central obesity may indicate poor metabolism. It’s for that reason that the researchers advocate that these individuals and their health risks not be ignored by medical professionals. They believed that patients should be equipped with better tools than a sheet of paper with diet advice.

**I FORGOT TO MENTION: I am still using Rogaine! Although I experienced some good results with the product, it certainly isn't a miracle product, and I cannot credit it to my sudden resurgence of hair because that occurred only after I stopped taking spironolactone. I plan on continuing to use Rogaine until I use up my remaining supply, and I will be sure to update you all if anything in my hair routine for thin hair changes! T I M E L I N E : 2011 (17 years old): I discovered my hormone imbalance and began taking birth control and spironolactone to combat it. The plan was to check back in after 3 years to see my progress. 2011-2012 (17-18 years old): I lost A LOT of hair, but didn't really notice it/want to make a big deal out of it because I thought it was all part of the process. 2012-2015 (18-21 years old): I am away at college and studying abroad and am unable to follow up with the doctors about this pill regiment like we planned. Nevertheless, I continue to trust the process and believe that eventually things will get better. December 2015 (21 years old): I compare old pictures and realize that something has gone horribly wrong because my hair is much worse than it was before I started taking the pills. I do research and develop the hypothesis that the spironolactone is what was causing my hair loss. Early 2016 (21 years old): I see a dermatologist who does a biopsy of my scalp. The diagnosis was androgenic alopecia. I was not satisfied with this answer because I do not have a family history of hair loss. I continued to voice my desire to stop taking spironolactone, and we begin to wean me off of it. July 2016 (22 years old): I am completely off of spironolactone and have kept my birth control the same. July 2017 (23 years old): A year later, I see improvement. My hair appears to be making a comeback. My skin was quite bad for awhile, but seems to be evening out. My hormonal redness and breakouts have returned. Hormonal hair growth that had initially been eliminated with laser hair removal came back, but not to the same extent as before. My hair produces oil, which encourages hair growth. Overall, my body seems to be evening out! Sometime in 2020 (26 years old): I will update you all on my progress after a full hair growth cycle off of the spironolactone! Hey, friends! So the story of why my hair fell out is finally here! I know you all have been anxiously awaiting the answers that I have been searching for over the last year, and I really appreciate your patience! So, although this video explains why I have unusually thin hair, and although my hair is growing back, keep in mind that I will A L W A Y S have thin hair. Sadly, I will never have the thick mane of beautiful hair that I long for (I mean, really, did you see Carli Bybel's new video that features her hair?! GOALS, UNATTAINABLE GOALS), but thankfully my hair seems to be making a comeback! Hi everyone! Apologies for not uploading anything sooner, to be honest it's because I haven't had much cancerous stuff to talk about over the last year (which is a good thing!) but I wanted to make a video which focused on something which, although a key "feature" in a person's cancer journey during treatment, also continues to be a significant component of a patient's recovery...the hair! It's the most obvious thing that people point out to you during and after treatment; how good you look as a baldy, how soft the little squiggly bits are, how jealous they are of your super soft angel curls, the list goes on! It can be a visual way of representing where you're at in your journey....which can be irritating sometimes, especially when you're not taken seriously with the whole "the chemo can't be that bad, you still have hair", or worse "your cancer can't be that bad, you STILL have hair" comments... but on the other side of treatment, to hear "oh wow your hair is getting so long!" and "look at your hair, you look so healthy!" can be so uplifting :D My hair started growing back on 5th April 2012 after my autograft stem cell transplant 2 months earlier, and since then I haven't had a single hair cut until now, 3 years later! I felt that getting my hair cut before then would be like cutting away the progress; that every extra millimetre of growth meant another extra leap further away from being ill. It sounds silly and I was actually getting fed up of having such a long, frizzy, split ended mess of a mop, but I just kept letting it grow. It came back curly, but before I was diagnosed my hair was only very slightly wavy. I thought the curls might straighten out as the hair got older and heavier from the added growth but I was wrong! It looks like the curls may have stopped as my hair is quite straight until about half way down now, but again that might be due to it being weighed down...I guess we shall see after the cut! Either way, my hair is still SO SOFT as it is essentially brand new hair, I haven't dyed it, I don't blow dry or straighten it very often at all and I drown it in conditioner...so that's a plus! For those who are interested in how long it will take for their hair to grow back, my hair after 3 years with no hair cut was 45 cm (18 inches) long! This is about average according to the internet, which says hair grows about 15 cm a year. I'm sure other factors would affect growth speed such as climate (my hair grows faster in summer, which doesn't last long in the UK!), diet, medication, products and things like using hair dye or a lot of heat styling, but roughly 3 years of growth will result in hair which is past the shoulders :) I got it cut last week and I'm glad I did, finally my hair has a style rather than ridiculous layers from each hair being the exact same length, and the split ends are gone so it looks less messy, yay! First off, let’s acknowledge that everyone is a special and unique butterknife, and there’s no rule about how men and women’s voices should sound. But on average, adult men’s voices have what’s known as a lower “fundamental frequency” than adult women’s voices. The fundamental frequency is simply the scientific term for how high or low a person’s natural speaking voice is. Sound frequency is measured in hertz, which means how many times something happens in one second. So a sound wave that vibrates 100 times per second produces a tone of 100 hertz. The more cycles per second, the higher the pitch. Babies usually cry at a frequency of around 500 hertz. Children have speaking frequencies in the range of 250 to 400 hertz. By the time of adulthood, however, men have an average fundamental frequency of about 125 hertz, and women about 200 hertz. What happened here? Why the big difference? To understand why men’s voices end up lower than women’s voices, we need to look at how the body produces sound. So let’s take a magical journey to the inside of your neck! Leading from your lungs to the cavity behind your mouth and nose is a pipeline called the trachea. You use it to breathe. At the top of the trachea is a hollow organ called the larynx, or in common parlance, “the voice box.” The larynx is also what allows us to make sound for talking or singing. To do this, you use your lungs to push a column of air through the larynx while using your laryngeal muscles to press together a pair of membranes called the vocal folds, or more commonly, your vocal cords. When you close the vocal folds like this, the air you push out through them makes them vibrate, and this vibration leads to sound. There are several factors that can all have some effect on the fundamental frequency of a person’s voice, like the size of the larynx and differential development of facial bones and cavities in the head, but the most important factor to talk about is the length of the vocal folds. If you pluck a string, the length of the string affects the frequency of the note that plays. Think about a guitar. When you press a string down to a higher fret on a guitar, you shorten the length of the part of the string that vibrates when you pluck it, and this produces a higher note. The same thing happens inside your larynx! The longer the vocal fold, the lower the note. During puberty, both boys and girls experience growth of the vocal folds, leading to lower voices. But the male hormone testosterone, which is released by the testicles during puberty, typically causes boys’ vocal folds to grow longer and thicker than girls’. On average, adult women have vocal folds somewhere around 10 millimeters long, while adult men have focal folds in the neighborhood of 16 millimeters. Nancy Riviere is a two-time breast cancer survivor. During her treatment, she met a couple of women who were distraught over their appearance and didn’t have the finances to purchase a pricey wig. Riviere understood what they were going through and donated a wig to each woman. The transformation in each of these women was profound and it inspired Riviere to start a non-profit to help others. Modern research has found other uses for aspirin. The drug acts as a blood thinner. It can help blood flow past a blockage in an artery. Blockages can cause heart attacks or strokes. As a result, patients at risk of blockages might be advised by their doctors to take a low-strength aspirin every day. And research continues. A new study has shown that aspirin can improve survival in colon cancer patients.It involved about one thousand three hundred patients with colorectal cancer. The cancer had not spread to other parts of the body yet. The study compared patients who took three hundred twenty-five milligrams of aspirin at least two times a week with those who did not use aspirin. The study found that the aspirin users had an almost thirty percent lower risk of dying from their cancer. That was during an average of eleven years after the cancer was discovered. Andrew Chan of Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital led the study. Doctor Chan says the effects appeared especially strong among patients with tumors expressing an enzyme called COX-2. Two-thirds of colorectal cancers produce that chemical. Doctor Chan thinks the aspirin works by blocking it. The study appeared in the Journal of the American Medical Association. It was an observational study. In a controlled study, some patients would have taken aspirin. Others would have received a placebo -- sugar pills -- for comparison. Last year, Doctor Chan reported that a long-term study of almost fifty thousand men showed that aspirin can help prevent colon cancer. But the effects required at least six years of regular use. And the greatest risk reductions were in those who took more than fourteen aspirins per week. But the researchers warned that the dangers from such large amounts of aspirin should be carefully considered. Aspirin is a kind of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug, or NSAID. The earlier study found comparable reductions from the use of other NSAIDs, but not from the use of acetaminophen. All of these drugs have their uses but they also have risks. Aspirin can cause bleeding in the stomach, the intestines and the brain. People who might want to consider taking aspirin as a preventative measure should first talk to a doctor. Does it prevent illnesses and diseases such as high cholesterol, blood sugar, blood pressure, cancer, heart disease, diabetes, etc. Is it easier to lose weight on it or will I get fat? Will I live longer? Etc. These are all great questions and today I’m going to give you a quick overview and summary about all of this. Difference Between Vegetarian & Vegan Are they healthier than meat eaters (carnivores)? I have lots of vegetarian and vegan friends and associates. So, I’ve seen all the different versions of “health” in this eating category. One of my friends is a really smart guy, he’s a vegetarian, does yoga and teaches meditation daily. However, he is NOT “healthy” in my opinion because he’s overweight, has high cholesterol and blood pressure. Why?... Because when we go out to eat, he’ll order fried Mozzarella sticks, French Fries and a vegetarian burger with lots of Ketchup and dressing. Just because he’s not eating meat, does NOT mean that he is having a healthy diet. First, as you may already know - I don’t approve of dairy. Of course, I don’t think fried foods and sauces are healthy. Technically, a bag of potato chips can be part of a vegetarian/vegan diet. But, this is NOT a healthy food choice. The point is that, no matter what type of diet you are on - you have to prepare foods in a healthy way. However, assuming one does do this, a diet that’s primarily plant based, is without a doubt, extremely healthy and one that I suggest everyone try. In fact, over the years I’ve put dozens of my clients and patients, who were very sick or ill or had a disease or even cancer, on a plant based, vegan diet and every single person was healthier because of it. HOWEVER, some of them couldn’t sustain it long-term for over a year and we had to make changes and adjustments, and I’ll tell you why and how in a minute. What are the benefits? Assuming the vegan diet is done right, it’s well balanced, no fried foods and so forth, there are LOTS of benefits: Weight Loss Vegans tend to be thinner than non-vegans.2 The interesting part is that a vegan diet can cause weight loss faster than a calorie restricted diet. And the reason is because the diet is high in fiber and bulk, so you can eat a lot of food, get full and it’ll still be less calories.3 Lower Blood Sugar vegans tend to have lower blood sugar levels, higher insulin sensitivity and up to a 78% lower risk of developing type 2 diabetes.4,5 Cancer Protection Vegans generally eat considerably more legumes, fruit and vegetables than non-vegans. This may explain why a recent review of 96 studies found that vegans may benefit from a 15% lower risk of developing or dying from cancer.7 Lower Risk Of Heart Disease Studies comparing vegans to the general population report that vegans may benefit from up to a 75% lower risk of developing high blood pressure.7 What are typical mistakes? Sadly, I’ve seen a lot of mistakes by “newbie” vegans or people who haven’t done the research yet. Eating unhealthy, fried and processed foods. Lacking in Omega 3 fats and vitamins and minerals like B12, Iron, Calcium, iodine and zinc. Not drinking enough water. Since Vegans have more fiber, they also require more water. Not eating enough protein and essential amino acids, which I’ll get to in a minute. Not taking getting regular blood and hormone tests. For some people, a vegan diet lowers lots of youthful hormones such as testosterone in men, estrogen in women, growth hormone and thyroid - just to name a few. California law says, “All parties to a confidential communication must consent to being recorded” and they never gave their consent. But according to Orange County Judge Ronald L. Bauer, the cops “had no objectively reasonable expectation that their words and actions would not be observed” while performing their official duties in a business they had just raided. Hair Extensions After Chemo, Woman Finds Hope with Hair Extensions

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) — For many cancer patients, one of the toughest parts of battling the disease is hair loss. It’s especially painful for young single women. Becky Gesswein knows exactly what that is like. Last May, Gesswein, 27, was diagnosed with breast cancer. After a double mastectomy, she donated 14 inches of her waist length chestnut hair to locks of love. Then, because of chemotherapy, she lost all the rest. For the past seven months, Gesswein’s routine has been putting on her wig to cover what little hair has grown back. She said the wig is uncomfortable and makes her self-conscious. “I always feel that people are staring,” said Gesswein. The diagnosis came just weeks after her 58-year-old mother had finished her own treatment for breast cancer. “It’s horrible when it’s your daughter. When it’s your child,” said her mother, Linda Thompson. “I wish I could have taken it away from her. I would have gone through hundreds of treatments, if she didn’t have to go through that.” Thompson says one of the toughest parts of her own battle was the loss of her hair, which has since grown back. “It’s pretty devastating,” she said. “You are already losing part of your ‘womanship’ so to speak and now you are losing your hair. And I just didn’t do well with it.” Gesswein says losing her hair has been very hard. “I want to feel good and beautiful,” she said. “There is just that one thing that is missing. You know, my hair is missing. It’s the one piece of the puzzle that I need to complete me.” So, Gesswein has decided to try a beauty treatment made famous by celebrities like Kim Kardashian, Jessica Simpson and Gate Gosselin: hair extensions. “I want to feel beautiful and pretty. I mean, what girl doesn’t?” said Gesswein. Last week, Gesswein was wearing a wig when she came to John Richards salon in Minneapolis. While John has done more than 3,000 sets of extensions, Gesswein — with her half inch to one inch long hair — will be one of his most challenging clients. “Since she had the chemo, the whole head has to be done,” said Richards. In a normal set of extensions, Richards would put on four rows or about three ounces of hair, but with Becky he will put in 20 rows or eight ounces of hair. “It’s a total transformation. I am really excited. This is really going to change the way I look and I feel and it’s really going to be awesome,” said Gesswein. First, Richards covered the mirrors in the salon so Becky couldn’t see the transformation. Then, Richards started by coloring the hair Gesswein has to a warm chestnut brown. He then began placing more than 300 strands on her hair. Finally, after five hours Gesswein was ready to see here new hair for the first time. As she looked at her waist length chestnut brown hair, she began to tear up. “This is awesome, this is so pretty,” she said. Waiting just outside the salon was her mother. “You look awesome. You look beautiful. I love it. I absolutely love it,” Thompson said to her daughter. It was an amazing transformation, indeed, and it’s a before and after that Gesswein says will change her life. “This is real. It’s going to be on my head for the next six months. I am so happy,” Gesswein said. Gesswein’s new hair cost $1,025 and $600 of that was the cost of the hair alone. The extensions will last six months, at that time John says her hair should be about four inches long and she can decide if she wants to keep the extensions or go natural Gesswein said she wanted to share her story to raise awareness about breast cancer.
