Birth Control Shot Side Effects | Birth Control

02:22
Watch more How to Pick a Birth Control Method videos: http://www.howcast.com/videos/510814-Birth-Control-Shot-Side-Effects-Birth-Control The birth control shot is a highly effective form of birth control. It is progesterone only and is usually administered by a doctor or a nurse practitioner. The injection is usually given into your arm or in your buttock once every 12 weeks. While this is an excellent and highly effective form of birth control, it does have some side effects. Some of the most common side effects include breakthrough bleeding, headaches, and over a relatively short period of time, you may stop getting your periods altogether. These side effects are completely normal. Now, the headaches and the breakthrough bleeding will usually get better with time. However, if you stop getting your periods with this birth control option, it's possible that your periods may not return until after you stop using this form of contraception. Please don't be worried. While patients are concerned when they don't see their periods, so long as they're using the birth control option correctly, this is perfectly safe. One of the concerns about using the birth control injection, or the birth control shot, is the return to fertility. In other words, if you use this birth control option and you decide that you want to get pregnant, it can take up to a year for your periods to return and for you to start ovulating in order for you to get pregnant. So if you're thinking in the next year or two that you would like to consider pregnancy, you probably should consider a different, more easily reversible form of birth control. Another concern about this form of birth control is the risk associated with bone loss. Now, the risk of bone loss is relatively low over the first year. But if you continue this form of birth control for two or more years, you may want to consider changing your options in order to reduce this risk from occurring. Again, I highly recommend that you talk to your nurse practitioner or your physician about whether this is a good birth control option for you. Despite the side effects, this may be the birth control option for you. And while you're concerned about the side effect profile, it's probably better to use this than to use nothing at all.

Watch more How to Pick a Birth Control Method videos: http://www.howcast.com/videos/510812-What-Is-a-Birth-Control-Shot-Birth-Control Learn what a birth control shot is in this Howcast video. The birth control shot is an injection that is usually done in your arm or in your buttock, and it contains progesterone only. This form of birth control needs to be given once every 12 weeks, and is an excellent form of birth control for patients who are not good at taking a pill every day, for patients who cannot use estrogen, patients who have migraines with aura. If you smoke, you may want to consider using Depo-Provera as a form of birth control until you quit, and you should quit smoking. It is not a good idea to use estrogen and progesterone birth control when you smoke. If you have a history of blood clot formation, whether during pregnancy, spontaneous blood clot formation, or with the use of oral combined birth control pills that have estrogen and progesterone, this may be a better birth control option for you.

How Effective is the Birth Control Shot | Planned Parenthood Video

The birth control shot — also called the Depo shot or Depo Provera — is an effective way to prevent pregnancy. How does the birth control shot work? Find out in this video. One little shot every 3 months gives you great pregnancy protection — that means that you only have to think about birth control 4 times a year. The shot uses the hormone progestin to prevent pregnancy, but it doesn't stop the spread of STDs, so use a condom along with the shot to help protect yourself. Like other medications, the birth control shot has possible side effects, but they usually go away in a few months. It also has plenty of benefits, like making your periods lighter — or even making your period stop altogether, while you’re using it. The shot is private — only you and your doctor need to know you’re using it. And it’s super effective, as long as you get your shot on time, every time. Want to get the birth control shot? The Birth Control Shot (Depo-Provera) - How It Works, Benefits, Side Effects

01:55
Learn all about the shot, or Depo-Provera, and why you might want to consider this birth control option. Get more information at http://ppmns.org or by calling 1.800.230.PLAN. Transcript: The shot is an injection that you get in the arm. It's also called "Depo" or "Depo-Provera." It's a birth control method that lasts for three months. The shot works by preventing the ovary from releasing an egg. If the egg isn't released, it's impossible for the sperm and the egg to join together. The shot also helps by thickening the mucus in the cervix, so that the sperm can't get through. The shot is a good choice for patients who want something that's long-lasting, something that's highly effective and safe. It's really convenient for some patients because you come into the office, you get the injection, and you're set for three whole months—you don't have to think about it, you don't have to carry anything around, you don't have to take a pill every day. It's also very private for patients for that very reason—nobody knows that you have it. Many women get the shot and don't have any side effects or problems at all. One of the most common side effects of the shot is irregular bleeding. It's not unusual for women to spot irregularly for the first 6 to 12 months when they're on the shot. After approximately a year, about 50 percent of the women that get the shot actually stop having their periods altogether (which actually a lot of women like). Because the shot is long-lasting, it can take a while to get pregnant after having your last shot, so that's definitely something you'll want to consider. If you're worried about being able to afford the shot, you should see if you're eligible for a program at Planned Parenthood which will give you low- to no-cost birth control and other reproductive health care. To see if you're eligible, visit ppmns.org.

01:06
Birth control shots are quite effective method of contraception if it is used properly. These are DMPA injection which are given once in every 3 months with proper use the chances of getting pregnant while taking shots is almost less than one percent which is very slim with not so perfect use that is if the injections are not taken regularly on time, these failure rate goes up to 6% also other medical conditions associated which may interfere with the effect of the injections, certain medications also may interfere with the effect of the DMPA injections.

Signs You Are Pregnant While on Birth Control

02:42
What are the signs you are pregnant while on birth control? You hit that row of do nothing pills in the birth control pack and your period does not come. It could come late for other reasons like hormones out of whack. And it was concern that my hormones would be messed up that I did not use them. Then I cannot say that you got pregnant on the pill because you used antibiotics. Antibiotics can make you poop a lot, passing the pills through faster. If you were taking thyroid medication, it would metabolize them faster. However, if you get a stomach bug and throw them up, you could get pregnant. If I’m throwing up a lot, that’s a sign I am pregnant on birth control. If you are nauseous or throwing up in the morning but not in the afternoon or evening, then it is likely due to pregnancy. If it is all day, then you may need antibiotics or another medication. I have not been taking antibiotics. If you were on the pill, you’d be able to guess you were pregnant if you had a light period the next cycle and none the one after that. With a birth control implant, though, a woman would not have a period at all. Well, most of the time. You could develop breast tenderness in early pregnancy. I get that with my normal cycle. Peeing a lot is a sign of pregnancy. Or a urinary tract infection. If you used an injected contraceptive, your odds of pregnancy are really low barring medication that interferes with it. I do not use the injectables. What are the other signs I could be pregnant while on birth control? If you used an intrauterine, it causes heavier than normal periods. If you’re pregnant, the period stops. That’s usually normal regardless of the contraception method. You could be certain you did a pregnancy test and it came back positive. Don’t birth control methods interfere with that? If you used a condom, cervical cap or even an intrauterine, you’d have the normal hormonal cycles for ovulation and pregnancy. It is only the hormone based pills and shots that throw off your hormones. And it may be that my contraceptive method failed. If you were taking birth control pills, the estrogen or progesterone won’t throw off the pregnancy test. In fact, no medicine you take for anything would mess it up. So a pregnancy test is the best way to see if I’m pregnant. And it would be a sure sign to talk to your doctor about the best way to stop your birth control, since you clearly won’t need it for a while.

What are the advantages and the disadvantages of the Depo shot?

01:59
The Depo shot is a very effective form of contraception. Pregnancy rates are very very low, and for this reason, it's a good form of contraception for couples who don't want to have kids for a long period of time. Another advantage is that after a few months from your first injection, you may not have a period at all, and most women will take that in a heartbeat. Another reason why some women choose this form of contraception is that they don't have to think about it every single day. You only have to think about again when it's time to go get your next injection. Now the biggest drawback to the Depo shot is that it takes a long time for you to conceive after your last injection. So again, this is why I say that it's good for couples who don't want to have kids for a while. On average, it takes women about 10 months from their last injection to get pregnant. And this is because it takes a while for your body to turn to a normal ovulatory or fertile state. In fact, many women don't start to have regular periods for even several months after their last injection. And if you're not having periods, that means that you're not ovulating, and if you're not ovulating, you're not able to get pregnant. Many women want to know if there's anything they can do to speed up this process and return to a fertile state faster, and unfortunately, there isn't much you can do. The biggest determining factor is not how many injections you got or how long you've been taking it, but actually what your weight is at that current time. Women who are at a normal weight, or have a normal body mass index between 18.5 and 24 or 25, are more likely to return to a normal ovulatory state faster than those women who are overweight or obese. So losing weight might help you return to a fertile state faster. If you have specific questions about this form of contraception or others, talk with your doctor, and they can help you decide what is right for you. And if you have any other questions for me in the future, feel free to ask them on our Facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/IntermountainMoms, and recommend us to your friends and family too.

This is my REVIEW of the Deprovera Birth Control Shot. it did hurt
Views: 6575 Dawna Martin
I quit the Depo shot 2 months ago. I have nausea, hot flashes and sore breasts. Why?

01:24
You mentioned that you stopped taking the Depo shot for contraception a couple of months ago, and you've had some unusual symptoms that have made you feel like you might be pregnant, and you've taken tests, they've been negative, you're wondering what might be going on, and if there's any chance that you could be pregnant. So the Depo shot is effective, on average, for 13 to 15 or 16 weeks, which makes the likelihood of you being pregnant very, very, very slim, since it's only been 2 months since your last injection. On average, it takes most women up to about 10 months to conceive a baby after their last Depo shot injection, because it takes several months for your body to return to a normal fertile state. So that, in and of itself, makes it very unlikely that you would be pregnant, because it's probably still effective right now, meaning that your body probably hasn't started ovulating yet. I do recommend talking with your doctor though, because nausea, tender breasts, and hot flashes can be due to lots of other medical conditions. And based on their ability to ask you more specific questions about your observations, and to take their knowledge of your health history into account, they'll be able to decide if further investigation is necessary in your situation. Good luck with everything, and if you have any other questions for me in the future, feel free to ask them on our Facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/IntermountainMoms, and recommend us to your friends and family too.

depo provera shot experience and after math

22:23
This video is about depo provera shot experience and after math. Keep in mind not everyone has the same reactions to medication, this is just my personal experience. I believe, now more than ever, you should research any prescription or medication you might take. There are side effects to everything and most of them are quite harmful to your body. I REGRET not looking up the side effects of this shot before taking it. There are MANY women who had the same reaction. This video is not meant to scare anyone, but i feel its important you know all the possibilities before taking the steps to start this medication. Please think of all your options. Even though i may joke or laugh in this video, this has been very hard on me... mentally, emotionally, and physically. I have had many expenses to pay for all my emergency room visits, supplements, doctors visits, face washes, and everything else because of all these bad reactions. So please take EVERYTHING into consideration. This is a very serious topic, and it has effected my life greatly. I am still struggling to this day to fight the symptoms of this medication. Thanks soo much for watcing. p.s. sorry for looking so horrible. this video was not meant for any purpose but to discuss my experience with the depo shot. i didnt want anything else to be a distraction, and honestly wanted my face to breathe especially since I am now dealing with acne.

Can contraceptive injections affect chances of conception in future? - Dr. Shefali Tyagi

01:33
Contraceptive injections are another method of contraception in which the progesterone is given as injection and it works for either 8 or 12 week. The side effects of such injections can be that the periods can become irregular. Sometimes you even stop having your periods. There can be weight gain. There can be effect on your bone. That means the bone can become slightly weaker. There can be breast tenderness, mood swings. So these are the common side effects. Now if you can start conceiving after stopping the injections, the answer would be that if you are planning pregnancy, don’t go for those injections as periods can become very irregular. Sometimes the cycles get back to their normal regular rhythmic flow upto a year after stopping the injections. So if you are planning another baby, then probably the injectable contraceptives will not be the best choice for you. You can either go for Copper T or contraceptive pills because in that case, the fertility is not affected so much. So it might take a little while to become pregnant after stopping these injectable contraceptives.
What are the side effects of coming off of the Depo shot?

01:16
You mentioned that you and your husband are trying to have a baby, and you were using the Depo shot for contraception, but got your last injection a few months ago, and you're wondering what types of side effects you can expect while coming off of this medication. While on the Depo shot, it's normal to have irregular bleeding patterns, and the longer you're on it, actually, the more likely it is that you won't have periods. And this is likely to continue for the next few months until your hormone levels get back to a fertile state. On average, it takes women about 10 months to conceive, because it can take your body several months before it gets back to this fertile state where your hormone levels are such that you're ovulating. So if you don't have periods for a few months, then that's normal. And you might start to experience a little bit of irregular bleeding, and then hopefully soon you'll start to notice established, regular periods. And then once that happens, you can calculate your fertile window, and time intercourse with ovulation, and increase your chances of conceiving and having a baby. Good luck with everything, and if you have any other questions for me in the future, feel free to ask them on our Facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/IntermountainMoms, and recommend us to your friends and family too.

07:45
I got my first and only depo shot on January 27th after our daughter was still born. I bled for 2 1/2 months, had panic attacks, and dry skin. Its been 16 weeks since i have been in the depo and i have started to have withdrawal symptoms. Im always have nausea but never vomit. I have also had head aches which led me to believe that i was pregnant but still no BFP.

Is it possible to get pregnant while on the Depo shot?

00:47
Studies have shown that the Depo shot is a very effective form of birth control. In fact only 3 out of 100 woman get pregnant during the first year of Depo shot use and this is usually because they didn't return for their Depo injection when they were supposed to. So if you have been using it reliably then chances are very very slim that your pregnant but again as with all things in the universe there is always a chance. so if you have any suspicions about being pregnant take a home pregnancy test, and visit with your doctor if its negative but you still have concerns. If you have any other questions for me in the future, feel free to ask them on our Facebook page at facebook.com/IntermountainMoms and recommend us to your friends and family too.
