Is Rice Healthy?

06:10
For more info: https://draxe.com/brown-rice-nutrition/?utm_campaign=Youtube-Sept-2015&utm_medium=social&utm_source=youtube&utm_term=rice Today I am answering the question, “Is rice healthy?” and explaining the difference between white rice and brown rice. My answer is that it really depends on you. I will show you the pros and cons of rice and go over what I believe is the healthiest rice today. There is a debate today about if you should consume rice or not: ⁃ The paleo diet community says to stay grain-free and therefore that rice is not healthy ⁃ Chinese medicine followers and vegans think rice can be an incredible superfood I believe there is validity to both but it depends on the person and the preparation of the rice. Rice to stay away from: Refined White Rice (This is not jasmine or basmati rice but the sticky white rice from fast food or Chinese restaurants.) Rice Cons: • Fiber, minerals and vitamins have been removed. • Study shows that people are twice as likely to develop diabetes as opposed to those eating whole grain brown rice. • Contains phytic acid (enzyme inhibitor) which keeps you from absorbing and digesting vitamins and minerals. • Contains proteins that are difficult to digest Rice Pros: • Whole grain brown rice is high in B3 which is good for heart health. • Whole grain brown rice is high in selenium which supports the thyroid and kidneys. • Certain types of rice contain GABA, a neurotransmitter that can support the brain and help reduce anxiety as well as support metabolism. So ... is rice healthy? Is brown rice healthy? It depends on how it is prepared. I believe if rice is soaked and sprouted, it unlocks the vitamins and minerals versus most rices that aren’t sprouted. I personally consume an organic rice from the company, True Roots. It is a germinated brown rice (soaked and sprouted) which kills off phytic acid and is easier to digest. In Chinese medicine, look up “qi” or “chi.” They believe that short grain brown rice increase your body’s “qi” which is your body’s life source and energy. It is considered to be one of the #1 healing foods. I suggest my patients make a “congee” with chicken bone broth, brown rice and vegetables such as carrots and celery. This chicken vegetable rice soup is healing and nourishing to the body. In conclusion, is rice healthy? Yes, it can be if you are doing sprouted rice that is traditionally prepared. Simply put, stay away from white refined rice that is void of vitamins and minerals and can cause a spike in your blood sugar and insulin levels. *This content is strictly the opinion of Dr. Josh Axe, and is for informational and educational purposes only. 10 Health Benefits of Brown Rice

05:13
10 Health Benefits of Brown Rice White rice is one of the most frequently eaten food products around the world, however, white rice is not nearly so nutritious as its less processed version; brown rice. By making a simple switch from white to brown rice your health may benefit in a number of ways. Although brown rice is less convenient than white due to its longer cooking time, it is much more nutritious as only the outer hull of the grain is removed. This makes it a great staple carbohydrate source which is classified as a whole grain and contains a range of essential nutrients such as B vitamins, phosphorus, selenium, manganese, potassium and magnesium. It is also a good source of dietary fibre and has a pleasant nutty taste that lends itself well to salads, stews and stir-fries.

I’ll give you the link to watch the original video in a minute. Now, in that video I stated how you want stable blood sugar levels - obviously, not “high” or “low”. This is important for anyone who wants to Avoid, prevent or reverse diabetes Lose weight Have more muscle Increase energy levels Live a healthier, longer life... while reducing diseases and slow the aging process Now, in that video I mentioned different foods to eat and avoid and I stated how you want to “eat white rice and NOT brown rice”. I didn’t get into the details, but I immediately got a lot of questions asking “why”. And this is obviously a great question because most of the so-called “experts”, doctors and nutritionist keep talking about the benefits of brown rice and that you should avoid white rice. And they erroneously tell you this because they say how brown rice “has more protein” -- but it’s only ONE gram “Has more fiber” -- but this is only TWO grams “Has lower glycemic index” and thus, doesn’t affect your blood sugar levels as much -- but this too is WRONG. First of all, there are different forms of white rice - but needless to say, white rice can actually have LOWER glycemic index than brown rice -- depending on how it’s cooked.2 And I’ll do another video about this topic in the future and how you can actually lower BOTH the glycemic index AND the calorie content of white rice, depending on how you cook it Thus, you can eat rice and not worry about it. Just let me know in the comment below if you want details about this and I’ll make a video about it. Don’t forget to to also subscribe to my youtube channel, so you’ll get notified when the video comes out. Anyway, as you can see there’s really no benefit with brown rice, compared to white. In fact, these so-called “experts” fail to mention how brown rice actually has MORE calories and carbs! … NOT good if you’re trying to lose weight or keep your blood sugar stable, right? But, here’s the REAL problem with brown rice and how white rice is better AND safer for you. Brown rice has Phytic Acid, which is an “anti-nutrient”. Phytic acid is a compound located in the rice bran – the part that gives brown rice its color. In fact, this is true with most other “whole grains”. Simply stated, phytic acid grabs on to important minerals and inhibits the enzymes we need to properly digest proteins and starches.1 If you're suffering from any food intolerance, allergies, sensitivity, or GI distress symptoms (bloat, gas, etc.) despite healthy eating… It could be the whole grains that you’re eating and it’s better to switch to eating white rice. This is also because whole grains, such as brown rice, contain dangerous lectins3 And most people are allergic to lectins and cause inflammation in the body. And if you’d like, I can also do a video about the toxicity of lectins -- just let me know below in the comments section if you’re interested. And you don’t have to take my word for it or even the scientific facts. Just stop and think about it yourself. ======================================== ======================================== Thank you for watching. Red Rice as a Cleanser - Properties and Benefits of Red Rice

15:09
Red Rice as a Cleanser - Properties and Benefits of Red Rice Red rice is a verity of whole grain rice that has plenty of nutritional properties. It helps your body reduce cholesterol and triglycerides as well as drop pounds without sacrificing taste and satisfaction. Whole grain rice is a little known but highly nutritious food, due to its color and because it maintains the skin that covers its grain which is full of nutrients and fiber. In this article we’ll explain how you can use red rice as a base for your cleansing diet to lose weight as well as lower your cholesterol and triglyceride levels, all without becoming hungry. Benefits of red rice Let’s discuss some of the best properties of this grain, since it will become the basis of your cleansing diet. Rich in fiber. Regulates blood sugar. Acts as an antioxidant. Contains vitamin B6, minerals suc has iron, magnesium and zinc. Reduces levels of cholesterol and triglycerides. Advantages of this cleansing diet You shouldn’t maintain this diet for longer than three days, as this is a kickstarter for a healthier day to day cleanse. Red rice will help you feel full, meaning you’ll eat less during the day. If you feel like snacking on something, it’s not because you are hungry but rather because of impulse-control issues. Your body and stomach will lose its swelling and bloating as well as make digestion easier. You’ll lose weight but should follow up with healthy diets to keep it off. Fights constipation without the need for supplements and laxatives, thanks to the amount of fiber present in the grain. Helps eliminate toxins through urination, sweat and defecation. Helps the body eliminate mucus which can lead to chronic sinusitis. You’ll note the alleviation of chronic pains and illnesses. What do you need? You’ll need the following ingredients: Whole grain rice, preferably organic. Gomasio (toasted sesame seeds mixed with sea salt). Apples (optionals or for those cases of gastric hyper acidity). Preparation Over a three day period, consume this mix. Although there are people who have maintained this diet for longer periods, you should be aware of illnesses that may have adverse effects. Talk to your doctor before you begin this diet. Every day, eat 250 grams of rice mixed with gomasio in four large meals a day. To be effective you must chew each mouthful around 80 times until the food is almost liquid. This is a key part of this diet which you should be rigorous in completing. If you suffer from gastric hyperacidity or must eat foods raw, you can add three apples per day, organic and with their skin, making sure to fully chew as well. The days before and after this diet you should consume preferably vegetables, fruits, legumes and rice. How to prepare the red rice Rinse the rice before cooking. Red rice needs to boil longer than white rice because it’s tougher. Cook around 40 minutes in two parts water for each part rice. Don’t add oil, salt or any other type of condiment other than gomasio. How do you prepare the gomasio? Gomasio is a traditional Asian food that has many beneficial properties. Loaded with vitamin and minerals, especially calcium, it’s the perfect addition to this diet. A source of energy and is nutritious. Facilitates digestion. Has diuretic properties. Is an alkaline. Stimulates the metabolism. You can buy it already prepared and cook at home or prepare it in your own kitchen by: In a pan, toast 20 tablespoons of sesame seeds raw, ensuring they don’t burn. Add to the pan a teaspoon of sea salt. Grind down in a grinder. Store in a glass bottle with a secure top. Salt will act as a natural preservative as well. Is Red Rice Good For Diabetes?

02:42
Is Red Rice Good or Bad For Diabetes Download Diabetes Management Book: http://bit.ly/2g0NDAH Hello, I'm Ty Mason from TheDiabetesCouncil.com, researcher, writer and I have type 2 diabetes. Today I'm going to answer the question, is red rice good for diabetes. But before we get into that, make sure you download my free diabetes management book which also includes a diabetes grocery shopping guide (foods to eat and avoid) and other tips to better manage your blood sugar to avoid complications. We have covered rice in the past, but that basically included brown and white rice. You can view that video, just search from our channel page “Rice and Diabetes.” Red rice is a bit different. Brown rice is the whole grain with just the first outer layer (husk or hull) removed through milling. It retains its fiber and germ which contains vital nutrients. White rice is brown rice that has been milled to remove the bran and much of the germ, reducing fiber and nutrient content drastically. Red rice has the hull still on it, or at least part of the hull. The redness is due to its high level of anthocyanin. According to Dr. Gargi Sharma, "Brown rice and red rice are quite similar when we talk about them on the nutritional front. Both are great sources of fibre, B vitamins, calcium, zinc and iron, manganese, selenium, magnesium and other nutrients. One thing that sets the red variety apart from its brown counterpart is it being enriched with antioxidants that can help fight damaging free radicals in our body." The culprit in rice that is difficult for the person with diabetes is carbohydrates. If you have diabetes, you know carbs and sugars are our enemy when it comes to maintaining healthy blood glucose levels. One cup of long grain brown rice contains 48 grams of carbs with only 3 of them coming from dietary fiber. The glycemic index of red rice is 55. This makes the glycemic load at 25. That is in the high GL category. So, is red rice good for diabetes? Not really. In moderate amounts it is ok to have. Moderation and portions being the key. Of all the rices, it is the one I would choose, but be careful. I hope this answered your question is red rice good or bad for diabetes. Don’t forget to get your diabetes management book. Let me know if you have any other diabetes related questions.

So lets talk about nutrients in rice and health benefits of rice to us! The outer covering of rice is called the husk. It is hard and not edible. When we remove it we get the whole grain rices such as brown or red rice, depending on the type of rice. Whole grain rice is considered highly nutritious, because it retains the next layer of rice, which is called the Bran. The major nutrient in the bran is Fat. But the Fat in rice bran is mostly the unsaturated type. Unlike the saturated fat, the unsaturated type lowers the cholesterol levels. Other nutrients in the bran are carbohydrates and proteins. It is rich in vitamins like B1 B3 B5 B6 and also minerals like iron zinc manganese and phosphorus. And thanks to its high fibre content rice bran further cuts down the cholesterol levels and the calorie intake. The germ of the rice grain contains fats, carbohydrates, proteins, lipids and minerals. The fat quickly becomes rancid. Since the bran contains high amounts of fat, it is not very durable. So to keep rice longer, the manufacturers remove the bran layer. This is our typical white rice. It lasts longer than the whole grain rice and relatively easier to chew. But it misses out a lot of nutrients of the bran and germ. There's a way to get around this. That's parboiled rice. It is produced by boiling the whole grain rice, before we remove the husk or the bran. So the nutrients in the bran gets diffused into the endosperm of the white rice. Boiling also makes the rice bigger, so small amounts are enough o make you feel full. This makes parboiled rice an excellent meal for losing weight. music Attribution: "Royalty Free Music from Bensound" Music: www.bensound.com

4 Popular Diet Tips - YOU SHOULD NEVER FOLLOW!!

08:04
Get a step by step diet plan that will get you ripped year round here… http://athleanx.com/x/diet-plan-for-ripped-muscle Everywhere you turn, people give out diet tips and advice for how to lose fat or build muscle fast. The problem is, most of that advice is terrible and will not help you to get to your goal any faster. As a matter of fact, many popular diet tips will do exactly the opposite of what they are supposed to be helping you to do. In this video, I cover four of the most popular diet and meal plan tips that need to be buried right here and now. Right off the bat, some will have you believe that eating fat makes you fat. That can’t be further from the truth. Eating fat, COULD make you fat if you eat in excess of your daily caloric maintenance levels just as eating too many carbs and protein can as well. The simple act of eating a fat molecule will not cause it to be stored as body fat in your body. In fact, nutritional fats are a necessary part of a healthy diet plan, with fat making up a portion of the surrounding layer of nearly every cell in your body. Next diet myth that needs to die is the concept that eating after 6PM at night is somehow going to make you fat. Again, it comes down to where you are at in your daily caloric intake in relation to your maintenance levels. If you are 800 calories below your daily caloric maintenance intake, eating these calories at 7 or 8 or even 10PM is not going to adversely affect you in your pursuit of getting a ripped six pack. The fact of the matter is, you are still at or below your level to maintain your current level of body fat and simply shifting the time at which you consume these calories does not change their thermal effect. That said, eating your meals too infrequently throughout the day can wreak havoc on your blood sugar levels. Having wildly unstable levels of blood sugar can lead to severe alterations in mood, focus and most importantly cravings. When you allow your cravings to build too significantly, you often find yourself in a position where you will grab foods that don’t align themselves with your healthy eating approach needed to get ripped and stay ripped as you build muscle. The next popular eating and diet tip that is dispensed all too often these days is the concept that you cannot build muscle if you are following a vegan or vegetarian meal plan. Why? There are plenty of protein options available to those following a meat and dairy free meal plan including quinoa, chick peas, and even pea protein powders that enable vegans to get adequate protein without having to follow a meat based eating plan. The total amount of protein needed to build new muscle is still a hotly debated topic however it has been shown to vary from individual to individual and could be far less than what you may have been told previously. Finally, there is a mistaken belief by some that taking supplements and fat burners will get you ripped. That is simply not the case if you refuse to also take your daily diet plan seriously. If you think that you can eat like garbage the whole day and simply pop a supplement and get lean, ripped abs you are wrong. That said, someone that is committed to eating healthy and then supplements their diet plan with workout and nutrition supplements is often able to get much faster results than those that don’t. A lot of the success of workout supplements has to do with their ability to help you remain consistent with your nutrition plan and stay accountable to it. Starting your day with a supplement that you are financially invested in will help you to be emotionally invested in the goals you set forth for getting ripped and muscular that you set when you initially purchased the supplement. The consistency that supplements provide in helping you to get in high quality nutrition in a portable and easy to prepare way is likewise priceless. As you can see, there are many workout and nutrition or diet myths that are popular and preventing you from getting abs and building muscle. 30 Best Foods For High Cholesterol

04:31
Raised total cholesterol is the leading cause of disease burden in both the developing and developed world as a risk factor for stroke and ischemic heart disease. Statins are commonly prescribed for individuals who have high levels of LDL, or “bad” cholesterol. Statins are also some of the most widely prescribed medications in the world. For instance, Lipitor, the most popular type of statins, has lifetime sales of more than $131 billion. Unfortunately, the reduction in blood cholesterol of statins translates into only minimal improvements in the health of the arteries, as seen by tiny reductions in heart disease.  Plus, statins have plenty of side effects, including - nausea, muscle pain, and damage to the liver and nervous system. Is Red Yeast Rice Extract OK To Lower Cholesterol On The Candida Diet?

03:33
Can you take Red Yeast Rice Extract to lower cholesterol while you have Candida, a subscriber wants to know. Here's my take on it... Hi there, Eric Bakker, naturopath from New Zealand. I've got an interesting question here from a subscriber. "Is red yeast rice extract okay to lower cholesterol on Candida Diet?" Well why would you want to lower cholesterol? I'm not sure if I've done any videos on cholesterol management but this whole cholesterol management, lower management thing is a huge myth. Most people have got no idea or understanding of cholesterol and its effects on the body. We're told that LDL or the bad cholesterol damages our health, and we're told that the high density lipoprotein, or the HDL is actually beneficial for health. But they're only giving you a very tiny little piece of the information. Heart disease occurs by way of inflammation and inflammatory mechanisms go far beyond just HDL and LDL ratios. So red yeast rice extract is basically a kind of a fungus, it's a yeast called monascus, and this basically is grown on rice. It's quite popular and has been used, I think like 300 before Christ they discovered this. So it's actually a type of a statin drug. So back in the '70s the Americans, I think Lovastatin came from a fungus called aspergillus. So aspergillus is a particular type of fungus that can also affect our bodies really bad if it grows in the lungs. But they isolated this particular drug, which they call now a drug, a statin drug, called Lovastatin back in the '70s, and what they found out that Lovastatin is very similar to the monostatin or the one from the monascus yeast. Did you get all that? I hope you did. So yeast, fungus can actually be quite beneficial for the body too because as you can see fungus have different effects on the body. In this case the monascus can block the effects of HMG-CoA reductase which is an enzyme which helps to produce the LDL. But you don't really need to lower LDL, it's a pretty dumb thing to do. You need to get your bowel functioning better. So by improving the bowel motions, you're going to have a much better ability for the body to bind to cholesterol in the gut and excrete it. You don't need to lower it through taking drugs, it's a stupid thing to do. So there are many, many different videos you can watch now on the internet about the cholesterol myth, or what we call the Big Fat Lie. It's a load of crap that you need to lower cholesterol in order to prolong life. You need to keep cholesterol balanced and in good amounts when you get older, 'cause cholesterol is a formation for four major hormonal pathways in the body, including production of testosterone, progesterone, estrogen, cortisol, [inaudible 00:02:39]. All these hormones rely on a good supply of cholesterol. So if you're mess around with cholesterol, you could also potentially mess around with hormones. There's a book called "The Thief of Memory," written by a lady who's husband was an astronaut, whose brain basically went coo coo on him after taking these statin drugs. Statin drugs make billions of dollars a year for companies and this Big Fat Lie one day will come out. Hopefully this video is up long enough for people to say, "See that guy was right. These drugs are a joke." So if you're worried about heart disease, keep your blood pressure down, your weight down, and keep your bowel function working. One of my teachers used to say, "People need to keep their mouths shut and their bowels open 'cause it's going to prolong their lives." Hope you got something out of this video.

Top 5 Muscle Building Foods | What to Eat to Gain Muscle | Muscle Mass Building Diet | Bodybuilding

05:12
🔥 FREE 6 Week Challenge: https://gravitychallenges.com/home65d4f?utm_source=ytube&utm_term=bodybuilding Fat Loss Calculator: http://bit.ly/2O4UGZX Many people when they have a goal of building muscle don't really come at it from the right angle. They try to hit the gym as hard as they can week after week and are surprised when their hard work doesn't pay off. The problem with this approach is that nutrition is many times completely ignored or viewed as something that isn't as important as exercise for building muscle. Or viewed like its just going to fall into place. The reality is that nutrition is just as important if not more important than exercise. Your body does not want to add on a ton of muscle mass. In fact it's naturally resistant to adding muscle mass and that goes for everybody not just skinny hardgainers. The reason is because muscle costs a lot of calories to upkeep. And your body for survival reasons wants to avoid increases in its demands for energy just like you want to avoid increases in taxes or car payments. The only way that we are able to create a suitable for muscle growth is to show the body, he body its okay, I got your back, you're going to be getting all of these extra high quality energy sources through my diet, so don't worry about using a little extra energy to put on some muscle mass. Just like when you get a raise at work your able to buy more things, when you give your body a raise in nutrients it's able to buy more muscle mass. I think I made it clear that we want a calories surplus when trying to build muscle, but that doesn't mean we can pig out on ice cream all day and get yolked. So I'm going to give you my top 5 favorite muscle building foods that I pack into my diet whenever I'm trying to gain muscle. 1. Eggs. For generations eggs have been considered one of the greatest protein sources for building muscle. The reason goes deeper than the fact that you get 6 grams of protein per egg. Eggs rank high on the bio-availability index. Bio-availability is basically the percentage of just how much our bodies can make use of certain protein sources. Our bodies absorb certain protein sources better than others and eggs rank higher than almost any other source of protein. When trying to put muscle mass on you can feel safe eating whole eggs rather than just the egg white. The cholesterol in food has been shown to not necessarily raise our blood cholesterol levels. 2. Brown Rice. Ever since I started eating brown rice I I realized that something about it made it an absolute necessity in a bodybuilders diet. Not only does it give you amazing whole grain carbs that'll provide energy for heavier lifts which in turn leads to greater muscle mass, but it has the highest bioavailability of protein than any other plant based source. It has almost double the bioavailability of beans and even beats soy. Rice alone does not have a complete amino acid profile so make sure you add some beans or chicken to make this a complete protein source. 3. Salmon. Salmon is high in fat, omega 3 fatty acids, creatine, and is packed with high quality protein. It's a great meal to eat for dinner or before bed because it'll help you stay anabolic, which means in a muscle building mode while you sleep. 4. Oats. Oats have a very high amount of protein for the amount of carbohydrate that they have when compared to other grains. They're also easy to make if you get instant oats, or if you through them into a blender with some protein powder. Oats are another great source of carbs that will give your body great energy for your lifts. 5. Nuts. To put on muscle you need to eat food that is dense in calories. And nuts helps you do just this while still getting an excellent source of protein. I wouldn't overdo it with the peanuts as there are a lot better options. Go with Cashews, Almonds, or best of all walnuts. Keep in mind that just by eating all 5 of these foods you're not going to be guaranteed to gain muscle. You have to maintain a calorie surplus not just eat certain foods. If you eat a surplus of these foods, however you should see improvements in your muscle size. LOWER TRIGLYCERIDES , 10 Steps to Lower Triglycerides

10:34
LOWER TRIGLYCERIDES , 10 Steps to Lower Triglycerides. When Triglycerides Inch Up Maybe you've put on a few extra pounds. Now your yearly blood work comes back showing high triglycerides. These fats are an important source of energy in your body, but at high levels they can hurt your heart. Like cholesterol, triglyceride troubles can lead to clogged arteries and possibly to a heart attack or stroke. Luckily, there are many ways to lower your triglycerides. Look at How You Eat That creamy latte, grilled cheese sandwich, or scoop of ice cream before bed can all lead to high triglycerides. If you often eat more calories than you burn - like many of us do - your triglycerides may start to inch up. The worst offenders are sugary foods and foods high in saturated fat, like cheese, whole milk, and red meat. Say No to Sugar If you have high triglycerides, get your sweet tooth in check. Simple sugars, especially fructose (a sugar often found in fruit), raise triglycerides. Watch out for foods made with added sugar, including soda, baked goodies, candy, most breakfast cereals, flavored yogurt, and ice cream. Uncover Hidden Sugar Learn to spot added sugars on food labels. Words to look for include brown sugar, corn syrup, words ending in "ose" (dextrose, fructose, glucose, lactose, maltose, sucrose), fruit juice concentrates, cane syrup, cane sugar, honey, malt sugar, molasses, and raw sugar. Focus on Fiber Swap out foods made with refined white flour, and bring on the whole grains. You'll eat more fiber, which helps lower your triglycerides. For breakfast, have a bowl of steel-cut oats with berries instead of a bagel or sweet cereal. At lunchtime, try a salad loaded with veggies and garbanzo beans. Choose brown rice or quinoa at dinner instead of potatoes or pasta. Eat the Right Fat A little fat is good for you, when it's the healthy kind. Choose foods that naturally contain mono- and polyunsaturated fats: avocados, walnuts, chicken without the skin, canola oil, and olive oil. Avoid trans fats, which are found in many processed foods, French fries, crackers, cakes, chips, and stick margarine. Don't eat much saturated fat, found in red meat, ice cream, cheese, and buttery baked goods. Choose Fish Instead of Red Meat The same omega-3 fats that are good for your heart can help lower your triglycerides, too. Next time you eat out, get the fish instead of a burger or steak. Eat fish at least twice a week. Salmon, mackerel, herring, lake trout, albacore tuna, and sardines are all high in omega-3s. Eat Your Nuts and Greens Other good sources of omega-3s: Walnuts Flaxseeds Spinach Kale Brussels sprouts Salad greens Beans Do You Need an Omega-3 Supplement? Ask your doctor. Capsules can give you a concentrated amount of omega-3s, but not everyone needs them. You may be able to lower triglycerides by making healthier choices in your life. And high doses of omega-3s can cause bleeding in some people. If your doctor says it's OK, look for capsules with EPA and DHA, two powerful types of omega 3 Cut Back on Alcohol. Do you unwind with wine, beer, or a cocktail? Switch to sparkling water with a squeeze of lime juice. Or try a tangy herbal iced-tea blend that tastes great without added sugar. Excess drinking is one cause of high triglycerides. That means more than one drink a day for women and two drinks a day for men. For some people, even small amounts of alcohol can raise triglycerides. Lose Weight Extra weight, particularly around your waist, raises triglycerides. One of the biggest things you can do to bring your levels down is to take it off. It doesn't have to be dramatic, either. Get Moving If you're carrying around a few extra pounds, starting regular workouts can get you in shape and lower your triglycerides at the same time. Aim for 30 minutes of exercise five days a week, and be sure to break a sweat and get your heart pumping. You can cut your triglycerides by 20% to 30%. If you're new to exercise, try a dance class, go for a swim, or take a brisk walk each day. When Habits Need a Helping Hand If lifestyle changes haven't helped enough, your doctor may suggest adding a prescription medicine. Fibrates, niacin, statins, and high-dose fish oil are a few of the options. Your doctor will look at all your blood fats -- triglycerides and all types of cholesterol -- to decide the best way to protect your heart.
