Tesla's new 2170 battery cell
As it turns out, Tesla, and its battery partner Panasonic, started production of cells for qualification at the plant in December, but today, it confirmed the start of “mass production” of the new battery cell, which will enable several of Tesla’s new products, including the Model 3. The new cell is called ‘2170’ because it’s 21mm by 70mm. It’s thicker and taller than the previous cell that Tesla developed with Panasonic, which was in an ‘18650’ cell format. Tesla CEO Elon Musk has been boasting about the new cell over the past few month. He said that it’s the “highest energy density cell in the world and also the cheapest”. All About Rechargeable Lithium Ion Batteries
We get a ton of questions regarding batteries, so we scoured the world, did a little digging, and researched the topic. Now you'll have some real answers on battery recharging cycles, whether you'll need to unplug your device once it's fully charged or not, if you need to condition your battery to avoid the memory effect, and even some information on who and when current rechargeable batteries came into existence. Please add to the discussion if you have any REAL information - leave the old wives' tales on Kim Komando's channel. Thanks. Lithium batteries were proposed by M. S. Whittingham while working for Exxon in the 1970s. However, Whittingham’s rechargeable lithium battery was extremely expensive and smelly. In 1983, Michael Thackeray, John Goodenough, and coworkers further developed a lower-cost alternative that worked better and didn’t smell. Two years later, Akira Yoshino improved the design, enabling industrial-scale production. In 1989, Goodenough and the University of Texas at Austin figured out how to make the design even better and more powerful, and that lead to the rechargeable lithium ion batteries we use today. There is no “memory effect” as there was with older rechargeables, and battery calibration software is unnecessary nonsense. The lithium ion battery does have a few weaknesses. First, they hate extreme cold, or extreme heat. Fortunately, they work really well in temperatures that work for humans. So keep them out of the freezer and away from a hot car, and you’ll be golden. Secondly, all batteries die eventually. First, they’ll lose their capacity to hold a full charge, so you’ll notice them dying faster and requiring more plugging in. Then, they’ll refuse to charge at all. Most lithium-ion batteries have a rated lifetime of somewhere between 300 and 1,000 charge cycles. Drops and falls can damage the internal components, causing dangerous leaks, so be careful. Finally, lithium ion batteries are expensive and often not easy or nearly impossible to replace. Apple devices especially do not want you to open their devices, using gobs of Chinese glue and freakishly weird screws to make it as difficult as possible.

Toshiba creates a battery: for cars that offers 320km of autonomy in 6 minutes of charge. One of the biggest problems of electric cars could be history thanks to a new Toshiba battery. The Japanese company has just presented a battery for electric cars that in only 6 minutes of loading offers 320 kilometers of use. The new generation of Toshiba car batteries, based on Ion-Lithium, is focused on changing one of the most well-known drawbacks of electric cars, charging times. Although companies like Tesla have managed to improve the speed of charge of their batteries, it still takes about an hour to have most of the battery charged. Depending on the type of electric car or even the type of battery that is selected, these vehicles could take several hours to charge. The new Toshiba battery offers high energy density and reduced charge time due to the use of titanium oxide doped with niobium. This element is also used in solar panels or even in superconducting images, such as those used in particle accelerators. After 5,000 charge / discharge cycles it maintains 90% of its original capacity. The battery is not yet in production, has been tested a prototype with a capacity of 50Ah, hence has extrapolated the results to what may be the future of this technology charging. Perhaps one of the most important details for the future of this battery is that after 5,000 charge / discharge cycles, it maintains 90% of its original capacity. This will result in an electric car would not have to change battery after a few years of use, even end up with rental programs. Toshiba hopes to start mass-producing this battery in 2019. For now only the electric cars of Suzuki and Mitsubishi use their batteries, also some brands of buses. Toshiba faces companies like Panasonic, associated with Tesla, which is nowadays one of the most important vehicle companies in the world.

Rechargeable battery cells are manufactured in cylindrical or prismatic cells, as this animation illustrates. First, copper is rolled into a foil that serves as the current collector on the anode side. Aluminum is used on the cathode side. Next, the electrode is deposited onto the current collector foil. The anode is typically made of graphite and the cathode of Lithium-containing oxides or phosphates. The electrode coating goes through a drying step in which unnecessary solvents are removed and the slurry based coating is solidified. After drying, the two electrodes come together in a sandwich structure with two separators - shown in green - positioned in between. This flexible layer structure then goes through a winding process and forms what is called a jelly roll. For prismatic cells, these structures are cut and layered, flatly rolled, or z-folded. Next, the jelly roll is packaged into a cylindrical container that resembles an oversized double "A" battery. Here, you can see the internal structure consisting of the two current collectors with electrode and the two separators for avoiding a short circuit. Before sealing and crimping the container, the battery is filled with liquid electrolyte. It is critical that the electrolyte wets the separator and fills all pores leaving no or minimal voids in the separator foam. Eight to twelve cells are packaged in a module. Then eight to twelve modules are packaged with a battery management and cooling system. Such a battery pack can then be used in plug-in hybrid and all-electric vehicles. The same or very similar battery packs can be used for stationary storage to enable intermittent renewable energy sources such as wind and solar.
How to build a Li-ion battery pack with panasonic 18650 cells 3100mah A
In this video, I show you how I recycled my old Lithium ion battery pack and reused the cell balancing circuit board. The original pack used standard 18650 Li-ion cells and had a capacity of 10 AH at 29.4 V. Since this pack did not conveniently allow me to change broken 18650 cells with new ones, I decided to build my own design. This pack is going to have about 37 AH at 29.2 V and can get me on my electric bike more than 80 Km of range. All the 84 cells which I am going to use can be checked and replace in less than ten minutes. I first started this project with some cheap cells from China which were labeled to hold up to 4600 mah. However, as it turned out, it was no more than a terrible scam. They had no more than 1200 mah. I only managed to get 34 km of range out of them. Therefor I went back to the dealer and complained. Luckily, he wanted to get rid of me as quietly as possible and kindly helped me to get the original Panasonic 18650 3100 mah cells from Japan. Since I designed the positive connectors for nipples, the Panasonic 18650 cells are flat on the top. I had to redesign the pack a little. After that, charging the battery pack went just fine and my first trip was very impressive. First 16 km each cell discharged 0.17 V, the second 17 km they discharged 0.14 V each. Maximum charge for each cell is 4.2 Volts, whereas I do charge them to 4.17 V. The minimum cutoff on my setup is at 3.42 Volts. On 0.14 V of discharge I can go an average of 16 km. 4.17 V maximum charge - 3.42 minimum charge, leaves my with 0.75 V. After going five times 16 Km, there is still 0.05 V per cell left. Recharging the battery pack takes about 8 hours. The charger goes perfectly through all three different charging speeds. It stays in the fastest for up to 4 hours than goes into the second for another 1.5 hours and stays in the slowest till the cells are full. It then turns off. All cells are charged this way at a maximum of 650 mah, which is good. The Panasonic lab tests promise 500 life cycles. This however are lab conditions. I am very optimistic that my setup will meet these conditions now most of the time, and therefor provide me with the promised 500 charging cycles. This should leave me with 40 000 Km and about 3.5 years before the pack goes down to 80 to 90% of it's original capacity. I know the positive connection is a little sub optimal. I should have made the top Plexiglas 0.5 centimeters thinner and have 7 separate tops like the ones I use now, but with the copper plates and nipples. Now I have to use two copper-plates cause I haven't thought it all the way through. I will change this when I have time. For now, everything works very perfectly. This is a good weekend project.

Nano One Materials Aims to Improve Lithium-ion Batteries
At the recent Canadian Investor Conference, the Investing News Network spoke with Dan Blondal, CEO of Nano One Materials (TSXV:NNO), about his company's innovative materials manufacturing technology. Although the technology could apply to a variety of different materials, Nano One has chosen to focus specifically on the cost-effective production of nanostructured cathode materials for lithium-ion batteries. "The battery space is something that everyone recognizes," said Blondal, explaining the company's choice. "Every investor out there knows that we need better batteries. There’s a big hockey stick of demand coming up, there’s a lot of pent-up demand for improvements to this space, and we think we can address that." Nano One has already started to receive third-party validation for its process, with testing by Canada's National Research Council validating what Nano One has found in its own labs. The company also has materials test agreements with "some of the really big battery players out there." "We have started testing battery materials with them and we’ve got some very good results back … we’ve come now to the next stage where we’re starting to make improvements to the material to meet their specifications," Blondal said. The CEO also spoke about how Nano One's process works, how he sees it bringing cost reductions for energy storage and how Nano One's partner NORAM is progressing with the conceptual design of a commercial plant. We target the graphite anode currently used in lithium ion batteries for replacement with a novel carbon nanotube aerogel anode boasting high specific surface area; by increasing the specific anode lithium loading capacity, as well as the surface available mass, we hope to boost the specific energy and charge rate of the battery.

Fungi recycle Rechargeable Lithium-Ion Batteries
Although rechargeable batteries in smartphones, cars and tablets can be charged again and again, they don't last forever. Old batteries often wind up in landfills or incinerators, potentially harming the environment. And valuable materials remain locked inside. Now, a team of researchers is turning to naturally occurring fungi to drive an environmentally friendly recycling process to extract cobalt and lithium from tons of waste batteries. Because of the huge growth in smartphones and all the other products with rechargeable batteries, the demand for lithium is rising rapidly, and it is not sustainable to keep mining new lithium resources Although a global problem, the U.S. leads the way as the largest generator of electronic waste. It is unclear how many electronic products are recycled. Most likely, many head to a landfill to slowly break down in the environment or go to an incinerator to be burned, generating potentially toxic air emissions. While other methods exist to separate lithium, cobalt and other metals, they require high temperatures and harsh chemicals. The research team is developing an environmentally safe way to do this with organisms found in nature -- fungi in this case -- and putting them in an environment where they can do their work. New aluminium-ion battery from Stanford
Stanford University Professor Hongjie Dai and colleagues have developed the first high-performance aluminum battery that’s fast charging, long lasting and inexpensive. The flexible, non-flammable device produces 2 volts of electricity. The research team was able to generate 5 volts - enough to power a smartphone - using two aluminum batteries and a converter.
