Innovations In Breast Cancer Detection: 3D Mammography

04:51
Approved by the FDA February 11, 2011, breast tomosynthesis, a new imaging technology pioneered by the MGH Breast Imaging Program under the leadership of Elizabeth Rafferty, MD, director of Breast Imaging at MGH, produces a 3D image of the breast and gives doctors a clearer view through the overlapping structures of breast tissue. How To Catch Breast Cancer Early: Stanford Doctors Explain Mammography Options

03:36
There are several breast cancer detection options, and it is recommended that all women over age 40 get their mammograms. It has been shown that regular screening can catch breast cancer early and save lives. Stanford radiologists Drs. Debra Ikeda and Jafi Lipson explain the different types of imaging available and also explain the newest technology, tomosynthesis, or 3D mammography. Visit: http://stanfordhealthcare.org/bcaware

6 Symptoms of Breast Cancer That Aren’t a Lump

05:51
6 Symptoms of Breast Cancer That Aren’t a Lump 1. Skin dimpling. Tumors can be deep in your breast and cause inflammation around them that tethers to the ligaments and skin, Dennis Holmes, M.D., a breast cancer surgeon and researcher and interim director of the Margie Petersen Breast Center at John Wayne Cancer Institute at Providence Saint John’s Health Center in Santa Monica, Calif., tells SELF. When this happens, part of your skin can be pulled in, creating a dimpled effect. This tends to be more obvious when your arms are raised, Dr. Holmes says, so make sure you also elevate your arms when you’re inspecting your breasts and bring this change up with your doctor. 2. Nipple retraction. Most women’s nipples stick out, but it’s possible to have inverted nipples, where your nipple is pulled into the breast. That’s no biggie from a medical standpoint. What is concerning, though, is if your nipple used to stick out and starts to get pulled inward. Nipple retraction can be caused by a tumor that’s located in the center of your breast, says Dr. Holmes. “It involves the milk ducts and causes them to shorten, pulling in the nipple, ” he explains. Like dimpling, this is more obvious when your arms are raised and is more than enough reason to check in with your doctor. 3. Nipple discharge. It’s important to take a few things into account with this one, says Dr. Jacoub. If you’re pregnant or breastfeeding, it’s normal to have some nipple discharge. But if you’re not and you have bloody or clear discharge from your nipples, even when you're not squeezing them, it’s important to get it checked out, John Kiluk, M.D., F.A.C.S., a breast cancer surgeon at Moffitt Cancer Center, tells SELF. Keep in mind, though, that nipple discharge isn't automatically a sign that you have cancer. Noncancerous tumors in the breast, called papillomas, can cause a bloody discharge, according to the Mayo Clinic, and birth control, breast infections, and having fibrocystic (i.e., lumpy) breasts can also cause discharge. In any case, a medical professional can help you determine the cause and figure out the best course of treatment if necessary. 4. Breast asymmetry. It’s pretty likely that your boobs aren’t a perfectly-matched set, but if you start to see that one is suddenly becoming bigger than the other or its shape is changing somehow, it’s time to call your doctor. “The most important thing is noticing a change,” Dr. Kiluk says. A ductal or lobular breast cancer can cause asymmetry in your breasts, although weight gain and loss can as well. Bottom line: You won’t know what’s going on until you get it checked out. 5. Redness or a rash. Your boobs are regularly subjected to things that can irritate them, like your bra, lotions, and soaps. But if you notice a redness or freckle-like rash on your breast that feels warm to the touch and isn’t going away, you should get it checked out. Again, it could just be the soap you found in your partner's shower or the new detergent you switched to. However, in rare cases, it could be a sign of inflammatory breast cancer, a rare and aggressive form of breast cancer, Dr. Holmes says. Worth noting: People with nipple piercings can develop the skin infection cellulitis, which has similar symptoms, Dr. Jacoubs says. Cellulitis requires a doctor’s care, too, so if you're dealing with strange nipple symptoms, you might as well make an appointment. 6. Breast or nipple pain. This is an unusual symptom of breast cancer, but it can happen, especially as a sign of inflammatory breast cancer. “It could be an infection, but you might need a mammogram or ultrasound to be sure,” Dr. Jacoub says. If you get an ultrasound or mammogram and it’s inconclusive or negative for breast cancer but doctors can't find another cause for your symptoms that makes sense, don’t let it go. “Don’t lose sight of it and keep pushing for answers,” Dr. Jacoubs says. If you find something off with your boobs, the odds are pretty high that it’s something that’s completely unrelated to cancer. “It’s important to put everything into context,” Dr. Jacoub says. Still, it’s a good idea to get new and unusual breast symptoms checked out, just in case. How to Recognize Breast Cancer Symptoms

03:01
Watch more Client Videos videos: http://www.howcast.com/videos/418228-How-to-Recognize-Breast-Cancer-Symptoms Over the course of a woman's lifetime, she may experience breast changes. While many end up being nothing to worry about, it's important to have any changes that you notice checked by a doctor -- just to be on the safe side. Here are the potential breast cancer symptoms to watch out for. Warning This video does not replace actual medical advice. Always consult your doctor with any questions or concerns. Step 1: Do a monthly self-exam Start performing a monthly self-exam as soon as your breasts are fully developed. Checking yourself regularly is important -- you need to know what your breasts feel like normally so you can recognize any changes. Examine yourself several days after your period ends, when your breasts are least likely to be swollen and tender. If you're no longer having periods, choose a day that's easy to remember, such as the first or last day of the month. Keep in mind that it's not uncommon for breasts to feel lumpy due to benign fibrocystic breast disease, cysts, scar tissue, infections, and other causes that have nothing to do with cancer. Tip For instructions on how to do a breast self-exam properly, go to "Breastcancer.org":http://www.breastcancer.org/. Step 2: Have lumps checked Know what you're feeling for: a lump that feels different from your breast's normal lumpiness, like discovering a pebble in your oatmeal. Though many lumps are benign, anything that feels new or odd should be checked by your doctor -- even if you've recently had a clean mammogram. Check for lumps in your armpits, too. Tip Cancerous lumps are more likely to be hard, painless, and unmovable. Step 3: Beware of dimpled skin Look for visible changes, like dimpled, puckered, thickened, reddened, or scaly breast skin, or a flattening or indentation on the breast. All are potential breast cancer symptoms that should be evaluated. Step 4: Note nipple changes Recognize the nipple changes that can indicate breast cancer -- pain; redness; scaliness; itching; skin thickening; the nipple turning inward; or discharge other than breast milk. Step 5: Have pain and swelling evaluated See your doctor about swelling in all or part of your breast, or breast pain. Though swelling and soreness are usually no cause for concern, these symptoms can be signs of a rare but aggressive form of the disease known as inflammatory breast cancer. Step 6: Get regular check-ups Have your doctor perform a breast examination at your yearly check-up, and begin annual mammograms at age 40. If you have a family history of the disease, tell your doctor: they may suggest that you start having mammograms at an earlier age. Knowing the signs of breast cancer -- and being proactive about knowing how to recognize them early -- is the best way to protect yourself. Did You Know? In a "Breastcancer.org":http://www.breastcancer.org/ survey of more than 2,200 women, 37 percent said they first detected their breast cancer with a self-exam.

The breast cancer tumor after removal...

01:18
A breast cyst is a fluid-filled sac within the breast. One breast can have one or more breast cysts. They're often described as round or oval lumps with distinct edges. In texture, a breast cyst usually feels like a soft grape or a water-filled balloon, but sometimes a breast cyst feels firm. Breast cysts can be painful and may be worrisome but are generally benign. They are most common in pre-menopausal women in their 30s or 40s. They usually disappear after menopause, but may persist or reappear when using hormone therapy. Breast cysts can be part of fibrocystic disease. The pain and swelling is usually worse in the second half of the menstrual cycle or during pregnancy. Fibroadenomas of the breast, are lumps composed of fibrous and glandular tissue. Because breast cancer can also appear as a lump, doctors may recommend a tissue sample (biopsy) to rule out cancer in older patients. Unlike typical lumps from breast cancer, fibroadenomas are easy to move, with clearly defined edges.Fibroadenomas are sometimes called breast mice or a breast mouse owing to their high mobility in the breasts. Breast fibroadenomas can be diagnosed early through clinical examination, ultrasound or mammography, and often a needle biopsy sample of the lump and treated by surgical excision. They are removed with a small margin of normal breast tissue if the preoperative clinical investigations are suggestive of the diagnosis. A small amount of normal tissue must be removed in case the lesion turns out to be a phyllodes tumour on microscopic examination. Treating breast cysts is usually not necessary unless they are painful or cause discomfort. In most cases, the discomfort they cause may be alleviated by draining the fluid from the cyst. The cysts form as a result of the growth of the milk glands and their size may range from smaller than a pea to larger than a ping pong ball. Small cysts cannot be felt during a physical examination, and some large cysts feel like lumps. However, most cysts, regardless of their size cannot be identified during physical exams. This is what Inflammatory Breast Cancer (IBC) looks like.

01:58
I was diagnosed with Stage IIIB triple negative inflammatory breast cancer (IBC) on January 13th of 2016. Before then, I hadn't even heard of it. After 8 rounds of chemo, a double mastectomy and 33 radiation treatments, I'm still alive and kicking! For more info, visit www.theibcnetwork.com * Symptoms of IBC. Below I've posted some of the symptoms of IBC. What symptoms did I have? I experienced rapid growth in my affected breast, dimpling skin, some redness, hard swelling, orange peel skin, and an inverted nipple. All this happened with a matter of weeks after having a mammogram and ultrasound. * I was diagnosed by mammogram, ultrasound,PET scan and biopsy. * Rapid, unusual increase in the size of one breast * Dimpling or ridging of breast skin * Redness of the breast: Redness involving part or all of the breast is a hallmark of inflammatory breast cancer. Sometimes the redness comes and goes. * Swelling of the breast: Part of or all of the breast may be swollen, enlarged, and hard. * Warmth: The breast may feel warm. * Orange-peel appearance: Your breast may swell and start to look like the peel of a navel orange (this is called “peau d’orange”). * Other skin changes: The skin of the breast might look pink or bruised, or you may have what looks like ridges, welts, or hives on your breast. * Swelling of lymph nodes: The lymph nodes under your arm or above the collarbone may be swollen. * Flattening or inversion of the nipple: The nipple may go flat or turn inward. * Aching or burning: Your breast may ache or feel tender. And remember, only 10% of women diagnosed with IBC present with a lump. * IBC accounts for 1-5 % of all breast cancers diagnosed. * Inflammatory breast cancer progresses rapidly, often in a matter of weeks or months. Inflammatory breast cancer is either stage III or IV at diagnosis, depending on whether cancer cells have spread only to nearby lymph nodes or to other tissues as well. It is not commonly picked up by a mammogram. * It is more common and diagnosed at younger ages in African American women than in white women. The median age at diagnosis in African American women is 54 years, compared with a median age of 58 years in white women * Diagnosing IBC is difficult. This is because IBC is not easy to see on a mammogram & often missed due to the lack of a defined lump and diffuse tumor clumps. It's described as being web-like or looking like cotton candy. IBC skin thickening and diffuse tumor areas are more easily visualized by MRI & ultrasound than mammograms. It is possible to have a completely negative mammogram and still have IBC so do not rely on this mode of imaging alone. Only one third of women with IBC have palpable lumps. IBC can be spread out over the entire breast very quickly.

20 early warning signs that cancer is growing in your body

04:14
20 early warning signs that cancer is growing in your body 1. Wheezing/shortness of breath Lung cancer patients remember noticing this as one of their first symptoms but didn't initially connect it to cancer. 2. Frequent fevers or infections Frequently a sign of leukemia, a cancer of the blood cells that starts in bone marrow. It causes the marrow to produce abnormal white blood cells that hinder your body's infection-fighting abilities. 3. Difficulty swallowing Most commonly associated with throat cancer, but can be a good indicator of lung cancer too. 4. Weakness and fatigue Such a common symptom of cancer that it should be looked at in combination with other symptoms to determine which it is. 5. Feeling full and unable to eat This is a sign of ovarian cancer. A loss of appetite even when you haven't eaten for a while is a tip-off. 6. Anorexia Could be an early sign of pancreatic cancer. A sudden disgust for coffee, wine or smoking can be linked to this as well. 7. Rectal bleeding or blood in stool Common sign of colorectal cancer. Blood in the toilet should be a big enough sign to see a doctor immediately. 8. Lumps in the neck, underarm or groin area Swollen lymph nodes indicate changes in the lymphatic system which can lead to cancer. 9. Excessive bruising or bleeding that doesn't stop Suggests abnormalities with the platelets and red blood cells, which can be a sign of leukemia. Leukemia cells crowd out red blood cells impairing your blood's ability to carry oxygen leading to clots. 10. Bloating or abdominal weight gain Ovarian cancer patients reported unexplained bloating that came on suddenly and continued for a significant amount of time. 11. Unexplained weight loss An early sign of colon and other digestive cancers. Also a sign of cancer that has spread to the liver, affecting your appetite and the body's ability to get rid of waste. 12. A red, sore, or swollen breast Indicates inflammatory breast cancer, unexplained changes should be told to a doctor immediately. A nipple that appears flattened, inverted or turned sideways had also been noticed by patients diagnosed with breast cancer. 13. Swelling of facial features Lung cancer patients have reported noticing puffiness, swelling or redness of the face. Small cell lung tumors commonly block blood vessels in the chest preventing blood from flowing freely to the head. 14. Sore/lump on the skin that bleeds, becomes crusty or doesn't heal Different types of skin cancer (melanoma, basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma) can cause these, so be aware of any odd-looking growths or spots. 15. Changes in nails A brown/black dot under the nail can indicate skin cancer. Pale or white nails can be a sign of liver cancer. "Clubbing", which is the enlargement of the fingers with nails that curve down over the tips, can be a sign of lung cancer. 16. Unusually heavy or painful periods, bleeding between periods A common sign of endometrial or uterine cancer. A transvaginal ultrasound should be considered if the problem persists. 17. Chronic cough or chest pain Leukemia and lung tumors (among others), show symptoms that can mimic a bad cough or bronchitis. Some patients also reported a chest pain that extended to the shoulder and down their arm. 18. Pelvic/Abdominal pain Pain and cramping in the pelvis can be linked with the bloating signs of ovarian cancer. Leukemia also does this because it enlarges the spleen. 19. Pain in back or lower right side Often an early sign of liver cancer. Breast cancer can also be found through this as a breast tumor can press backward into the chest or spread to the spine/ribs. 20. Upset stomach Stomach cramps or a frequently upset stomach can be a sign of colorectal cancer. Subscribe ► https://goo.gl/1dVtUS Thank you for watching. Massive Ovarian Tumor Removal Surgery..!!

04:18
Ovarian cancer is a cancer that forms in or on an ovary. It results in abnormal cells that have the ability to invade or spread to other parts of the body. When this process begins, there may be no or only vague symptoms. Symptoms become more noticeable as the cancer progresses. These symptoms may include bloating, pelvic pain, abdominal swelling, and loss of appetite, among others. Common areas to which the cancer may spread include the lining of the abdomen, lymph nodes, lungs, and liver. The risk of ovarian cancer increases in women who have ovulated more over their lifetime. This includes those who have never had children, those who begin ovulation at a younger age and those who reach menopause at an older age. Other risk factors include hormone therapy after menopause, fertility medication, and obesity. Factors that decrease risk include hormonal birth control, tubal ligation, and breast feeding. About 10% of cases are related to inherited genetic risk; women with mutations in the genes BRCA1 or BRCA2 have about a 50% chance of developing the disease. The most common type of ovarian cancer, comprising more than 95% of cases, is ovarian carcinoma. There are five main subtypes of ovarian carcinoma, of which high-grade serous carcinoma is the most common. These tumors are believed to start in the cells covering the ovaries, though some may form at the Fallopian tubes. Less common types of ovarian cancer include germ cell tumors and sex cord stromal tumors. A diagnosis of ovarian cancer is confirmed through a biopsy of tissue, usually removed during surgery. Screening is not recommended in women who are at average risk, as evidence does not support a reduction in death and the high rate of false positive tests may lead to unneeded surgery, which is accompanied by its own risks. Those at very high risk may have their ovaries removed as a preventive measure. If caught and treated in an early stage, ovarian cancer is often curable. Treatment usually includes some combination of surgery, radiation therapy, and chemotherapy. Outcomes depend on the extent of the disease, the subtype of cancer present, and other medical conditions. The overall five-year survival rate in the United States is 45%. Outcomes are worse in the developing world. Signs and symptoms Early symptoms Site of ovarian cancer Early signs and symptoms of ovarian cancer may be absent or subtle. In most cases, symptoms exist for several months before being recognized and diagnosed. Symptoms can be misdiagnosed as irritable bowel syndrome. The early stages of ovarian cancer tend to be painless. Symptoms can vary based on the subtype. Low malignant potential (LMP) tumors, also known as borderline tumors, do not cause an increase in CA125levels and are not identifiable with an ultrasound. The typical symptoms of an LMP tumor can include abdominal distension or pelvic pain. Particularly large masses tend to be benign or borderline. The most typical symptoms of ovarian cancer include bloating, abdominal or pelvic pain or discomfort, back pain, irregular menstruation or postmenopausal vaginal bleeding, pain or bleeding after or during sexual intercourse, loss of appetite, fatigue, diarrhea, indigestion, heartburn, constipation, nausea, feeling full, and possibly urinary symptoms (including frequent urination and urgent urination). Later symptoms The growing mass may cause pain if ovarian torsion develops. Symptoms can be caused by a mass pressing on the other abdominopelvic organs or from metastases. If these symptoms start to occur more often or more severely than usual, especially after no significant history of such symptoms, ovarian cancer is considered. Metastases may cause a Sister Mary Joseph nodule. Rarely, teratomas can cause growing teratoma syndrome or peritoneal gliomatosis. Some experience menometrorrhagia and abnormal vaginal bleeding after menopause in most cases. Other common symptoms include hirsutism, abdominal pain, virilization, and an adnexal mass.

Breast cancer warning - what does a cancerous lump feel like?

02:57
Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women in the UK, according to the NHS.The disease mainly affects women over 50 that have been through the menopause. Those most at risk are people with a family history of breast cancer, or have a previous benign breast lump.Common breast cancer symptoms can include a lump or swelling in either of your armpits, a rash or change to one of your nipples, or a sudden change in the size or shape of your breasts. One of the first signs of the cancer, however, is a lump or area of thickened tissue. But, what does the lump actually feel like? Related articles Breast cancer: Women 'could avoid unnecessary mastectomies' Breast cancer symptoms: Five signs of deadly tumour Cancerous breast lumps may feel like they have irregular shape, according to the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. They may feel firm or solid, and could be fixed to the tissue in the breast. The lumps are often painless, so you should still see a doctor if you find any lumps in your breast. But, a small number of painful breast lumps can turn out to be cancer, although breast pain isn’t usually a sign of the disease.Women must speak to their doctor if they notice changes to their breasts, urged the cancer institute. Signs and symptoms of Breast cancer Thu, October 6, 2016 Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women; and one in eight women in the UK will develop the disease during their lifetime. These are the symptoms to check for. Play slideshow Getty Images 1 of 8 Discharge, rash or dimpling? These are the symptoms to check for “Although breast cancer is the most common cancer found in women, most breast lumps are not cancer,” said the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.“In fact, more than 80 per cent of them end up being benign. “Despite these common descriptions, it is impossible to tell by touch whether a lump is cancer.“The key point is that a woman should seek medical attention for any concerning lumps in her breasts.“Simple imaging techniques such as a mammogram or breast ultrasound can usually provide reassurance that the breast lump is benign, and if necessary, a breast MRI or biopsy can be used to evaluate whether the lump is cancerous.”Regular exercise and following a healthy, balanced diet may help to prevent many conditions, including a number of cancers, the NHS said.Although there’s no definitive link between breast cancer cases and diet, there are benefits for women that maintain a healthy weight, do plenty of exercise, and have a low intake of saturated fat.Exercise could slash your risk of breast cancer by up to a third.Women that have been through the menopause are more likely to develop the cancer, as they produce more oestrogen.Oestrogen increases the risk of developing breast cancer.

#cancer #symptoms #signs cancer signs 14 early warning signs that cancer is growing in your body Here are signs that are commonly ignored: 1. Wheezing or shallow breathing If you ask lung cancer patients what the first thing they noticed was, the majority would say it was their difficulty with breathing, or trouble catching their breath. 2. Chronic coughing or pain in the chest area Chest pain, incessant coughing, and even pain that reaches down the arms are symptoms of leukemia and lung tumors. 3. Frequently having fevers or infections White blood cells help our body to fight off infections and foreign invaders. Leukemia is a type of blood cell cancer that begins in bone marrow and causes the body to produce abnormal white blood cells, which reduces the effectiveness of its ability to fight infections. 4. Trouble with swallowing If you have difficulty swallowing, you may want to get checked for preliminary esophageal or throat cancer. It is also associated with lung cancer as well. 5. Lymph nodes that are swollen or lumps on the skin of your neck, underarm, or groin Any drastic changes in your lymphatic system should be carefully observed. These changes could be warning signs of lymphatic cancer. 6. Over-bruising and excessive bleeding When platelets and red blood cells act abnormally, there becomes excessive bruising and bleeding. CAN MAMMOGRAPHY CAUSE BREAST CANCER?

06:17
Does mammography imrpove your breast cancer survival chances? Doctors recommend mammography screening and for women over 40 a quick x-rays screening is a must every 2-3 years. But if mammography is the right path then why aren’t the numbers of women surviving breast cancer rising? Is this the only detection method? How healthy is diagnostic mammography? Is it positive or false? How can women escape breast cancer? 🔥 Breast cancer is the third biggest killer cancer and the most common cancer when it comes to women. Therefore, the question is can we survive breast cancer? Can we find it, catch it in time so our survival chance is bigger? Is catching breast cancer early helping to escape death? A 25 years long Canadian study with nearly 90.000 women participants aged 40 to 59 finds no reduction in the mortality rate because of breast cancer between the control group that was receiving physical exams and the group that was having mammography screening and physicals. Beside, mammograms are not always right. Overdiagnosis, false positive and false negative are either pushing healthy women for more radiation or keeping already sick women from getting treatment they need. In the USA 49 % of women will receive false positive results after ten rounds of mammography screening. And while mammograms might seem to help us improve our health, the truth is that even if mammogram catches breast cancer, the treatment and treatment results will be pretty much the same for 87-97 % of women. Meaning that either cancer is so aggressive no early detection can help, or that even if would discover it later, we would survive anyway. So, is mammogram really the best tool if we want to catch and survive breast cancer? Is it improving our health or does it have a massive impact on our physical and mental health? Maybe we should focus on other detection methods to improve survival rates or we should learn how we can escape it all together? There are some alternative detection methods, but those alternatives don’t really work. Self-examination, MRI and ultrasound are not catching breast cancer any better than mammograms and are in no way improving our health or survival chances. What can and should we do? Should we try to escape mammography screenings and if we do, do we have a bigger chance of escaping breast cancer or at least at surviving it? According to American Institute for Cancer Research and World Cancer Research Fund the best way to escape breast cancer altogether is to maintain a healthy lifestyle and increase survival rates as much as possible. 20 Early Warning Signs That Cancer Is Growing In Your Body Link video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zzFbYamkUng 20 Early Warning Signs That Cancer Is Growing In Your Body Indirect Symptoms 1. Wheezing/shortness of breath Lung cancer patients remember noticing this as one of their first symptoms but didn’t initially connect it to cancer. 2. Frequent fevers or infections Frequently a sign of leukemia, a cancer of the blood cells that starts in bone marrow. It causes the marrow to produce abnormal white blood cells that hinder your body’s infection-fighting abilities. A loss of appetite even when you haven’t eaten for a while is a tip-off. 6. Anorexia Could be an early sign of pancreatic cancer. A sudden disgust for coffee, wine or smoking can be linked to this as well. Visible Bodily Changes 7. 9. Excessive bruising or bleeding that doesn’t stop Suggests abnormalities with the platelets and red blood cells, which can be a sign of leukemia. Leukemia cells crowd out red blood cells impairing your blood’s ability to carry oxygen leading to clots. 10. Bloating or abdominal weight gain Ovarian cancer patients reported unexplained bloating that came on suddenly and continued for a significant amount of time. 11. Unexplained weight loss An early sign of colon and other digestive cancers. Also a sign of cancer that has spread to the liver, affecting your appetite and the body’s ability to get rid of waste. 14. Sore/lump on the skin that bleeds, becomes crusty or doesn’t heal Different types of skin cancer (melanoma, basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma) can cause these, so be aware of any odd-looking growths or spots. 15. Changes in nails A brown/black dot under the nail can indicate skin cancer. Pale or white nails can be a sign of liver cancer. “Clubbing”, which is the enlargement of the fingers with nails that curve down over the tips, can be a sign of lung cancer. Pain 16. ----------------------------------- LIKE, SHARE and SUBCRIBE our channel: https://goo.gl/ZFhC21 - Beauty Tips: http://goo.gl/xp4pEl - Home Remedies: http://goo.gl/zFSzDN - Pregnancy: http://goo.gl/B6KOsA - Sex & Relationships: http://goo.gl/5WHt3n ------------------- Facebook: https://goo.gl/aBu010 Google Plus: https://goo.gl/m9AsdD Website: http://happymomweb.blogspot.com/ Thank you for watching this video. Swollen lymph nodes (lymphadenopathy) are common. Cancer and infection can be causes for lymph node enlargement or inflammation (felt as pain). This can occur in the cervical (neck), epitrochlear (elbow), axillary (arm pit), and inguinal (groin) areas. Although lymph nodes are commonly referred to as glands, they are not true glands. Medical Surgical Women's Health: Mammography

07:40
Hello Everyone, here is a women's health lecture on the use of a mammogram made easy to understand to help aide in your study sessions. I have gathered all of the important information from my Med- Surg Book (Brunners and Suddarth 12th edition) that will prepare you for your nursing test whether it is for school or NCLEX. Here are some Extra information that may help and guide you... Galactography: Galactography is a diagnostic procedure that involves injection of less than 1 mL of radiopaque material through a cannula inserted into a ductal opening on the areola, which is followed by a mammogram. It is performed to evaluate an abnormality within the duct when the patient has bloody nipple discharge on expression, spontaneous nipple discharge, or a solitary dilated duct noted on mammography. Ultrasonography: Ultrasonography (ultrasound) is used as a diagnostic adjunct to mammography to help distinguish fluid-filled cysts from other lesions. A thin coating of lubricating jelly is spread over the area to be imaged. A transducer is then placed on the breast. The transducer transmits high-frequency sound waves through the skin toward the area of concern. The sound waves that are reflected back form a two-dimensional image, which is then displayed on a computer screen. No radiation is emitted during the procedure. Ultrasonography has advantages and disadvantages. Although it can diagnose cysts with great accuracy, it cannot definitively rule out malignant lesions. Microcalcifications, which are detectable on mammography, cannot be identified on ultrasonography. Finally, examination techniques and interpretation criteria are not standardized. Magnetic Resonance Imaging: Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the breast is rapidly gaining in popularity. This highly sensitive test has become a useful diagnostic adjunct to mammography. A magnet is linked to a computer that creates detailed images of the breast without exposure to radiation. An intravenous (IV) injection of gadolinium, a contrast dye, is given to improve visibility. The patient lies face down and the breast is placed through a depression in the table. A coil is placed around the breast, and the patient is placed inside the MRI machine. The entire procedure takes about 30 to 40 minutes. MRI is most useful in patients with proven breast cancer when assessing for multifocal (more than one tumor in the same quadrant of the breast) or multicentric (more than one tumor in different quadrants of the breast) disease, chest wall involvement, tumor recurrence, or response to chemotherapy. The procedure can also identify occult (undetectable) breast cancer and determine the integrity of saline or silicone breast implants. Recent studies have shown that MRI is a highly sensitive screening tool that can be used to identify breast cancer in women at high risk for the disease (Orel, 2008). The ACS now recommends an annual MRI scan in addition to mammography in women at high risk for breast cancer (ie, those with greater than 20% lifetime risk). Candidates include women who have a BRCA1 or BRCA2 mutation, a first-degree relative with either of these mutations, certain rare genetic syndromes, or radiation to the chest between 10 and 30 years of age (Saslow, Boetes, Burke, et al., 2007). MRI should be used in addition to mammography, not instead of it. Some disadvantages of MRI include high cost, variations in technique and interpretation, and the potential for patient claustrophobia. The procedure cannot always accurately distinguish between malignant and benign breast conditions. MRI is contraindicated in patients with implantable metal devices (eg, aneurysm clips, pacemakers, ports of tissue expanders) because of the metallic force. Foilbacked medication patches (eg, nicotine, nitroglycerine, fentanyl) must be removed prior to MRI to avoid burns to the skin.

Removal of fibroadenoma of breast

00:49
A lump in breast can be a experience, but not all lumps and tumors are cancerous. One type of benign (non-malignant) tumor is called a fibroadenoma. It is not life-threatening, a fibroadenoma may still require treatment. A fibroadenoma is a non-cancerous tumor in the breast that is commonly found in women under the age of 30 ,fibroadenomas are diagnosed in approximately 10 percent of women in the United States). The tumor consists of breast tissue and connective (stromal) tissue, while most women only have one tumor, 10 to 15 percent of women have multiple lumps . Fibroadenomas can occur in one or both breasts. Sometimes fibroadenomas are so small that they cannot be felt. When you are able to feel one, it is very distinct from the surrounding tissue. The edges are clearly defined and the tumors have a detectable shape. They are moveable under the skin and are typically not tender. These tumors often feel like marbles, but may have a rubbery feel to them. **Causes: The exact cause of fibroadenomas is not known. Hormones such as estrogen may play a part in the growth and development of the tumors. Taking oral contraceptives before the age of 20 has been associated with a higher risk of developing fibroadenomas. These tumors may grow, particularly during pregnancy. During menopause, they often shrink. It is also possible for fibroadenomas to resolve on their own. Types There are two types of fibroadenomas: simple fibroadenomas and complex fibroadenomas. The simple tumors do not increase breast cancer risk and look the same all over when viewed under a microscope. The complex tumors contain other components such as macrocysts (fluid-filled sacs large enough to feel and to see without a microscope) and calcifications (calcium deposits). Complex fibroadenomas can slightly increase your risk of breast cancer. The American Cancer Society states that women with complex fibroadenomas have approximately one and a half to two times greater risk of developing breast cancer than women with no breast lumps (ACS). DIAGNOSIS How Are Fibroadenomas Diagnosed? A physical examination will be conducted and your breasts will be palpated (examined manually). A breast ultrasound or mammogram imaging test may also be ordered. A breast ultrasound involves lying on a table while a hand-held device called a transducer is moved over the skin of the breast, creating a picture on a screen. A mammogram is an X-ray of the breast taken while the breast is compressed between two flat surfaces. A fine needle aspiration or biopsy may be performed to remove tissue for testing. This involves inserting a needle into the breast and removing small pieces of the tumor. The tissue will then be sent to a lab for microscopic examination to determine the type of fibroadenoma and if it is canc Treatment: If you are diagnosed with a fibroadenoma, it does not necessarily have to be removed. It depends on physical symptoms, family history, and personal concerns, doctor can decide whether to have it removed or not. Fibroadenomas that do not grow and are definitely not cancerous can be closely monitored with clinical breast exams and imaging tests, such as mammograms and ultrasounds. When fibroadenoma needs to be removed: removed typically depends on the following: if it distort the natural shape of the breast if it causes pain if you are concerned about developing cancer if you have a family history of cancer if you received questionable biopsy results If a fibroadenoma is removed, it is possible for one or more to grow in its place. Living with a Fibroadenoma Due to the slightly increased risk of breast cancer, patient should have regular checkups by doctor and schedule regular mammograms.Patient should also make breast self-exams a regular part of your routine. If there are any changes in the size or shape of an existing fibroadenoma, notice the doctor right away.
Removal of Fibroid - the only way to get rid of the cancer

Early Signs that Cancer is Growing in Your Body

16:15
Don’t rely on routine tests alone to protect you from cancer. It’s just as important to listen to your body and notice anything that’s different, odd, or unexplainable. Here are some signs that are commonly overlooked: 1. Wheezing or shortness of breath One of the first signs many lung cancer patients remember noticing is the inability to catch their breath. 2. Chronic cough or chest pain Several types of cancer, including leukemia and lung tumors, can cause symptoms that mimic a bad cough or bronchitis. Some lung cancer patients report chest pain that extends up into the shoulder or down the arm. 3. Frequent fevers or infections These can be signs of leukemia, a cancer of the blood cells that starts in the bone marrow. Leukemia causes the marrow to produce abnormal white blood cells, sapping your body’s infection-fighting capabilities. 4. Difficulty swallowing Trouble swallowing is most commonly associated with esophageal or throat cancer, and is sometimes one of the first signs of lung cancer, too. 5. Swollen lymph nodes or lumps on the neck, underarm, or groin Enlarged lymph nodes indicate changes in the lymphatic system, which can be a sign of cancer. 6. Excessive bruising or bleeding that doesn’t stop This symptom usually suggests something abnormal happening with the platelets and red blood cells, which can be a sign of leukemia. Over time, leukemia cells crowd out red blood cells and platelets, impairing your blood’s ability to carry oxygen and clot. 7. Weakness and fatigue Generalized fatigue and weakness is a symptom of so many different kinds of cancer that you’ll need to look at it in combination with other symptoms. But any time you feel exhausted without explanation and it doesn’t respond to getting more sleep, talk to your doctor. 8. Bloating or abdominal weight gain Women diagnosed with ovarian cancer overwhelmingly report unexplained abdominal bloating that came on fairly suddenly and continued on and off over a long period of time. 9. Feeling full and unable to eat This is another tip-off to ovarian cancer; women say they have no appetite and can’t eat, even when they haven’t eaten for some time. 10. Pelvic or abdominal pain Pain and cramping in the pelvis and abdomen can go hand in hand with the bloating that often signals ovarian cancer. Leukemia can also cause abdominal pain resulting from an enlarged spleen. 11. Rectal bleeding or blood in stool This is a common result of diagnosing colorectal cancer. Blood in the toilet alone is reason to call your doctor and schedule a colonoscopy. 12. Unexplained weight loss Weight loss is an early sign of colon and other digestive cancers; it’s also a sign of cancer that’s spread to the liver, affecting your appetite and the ability of your body to rid itself of wastes. 13. Upset stomach or stomachache Stomach cramps or frequent upset stomachs may indicate colorectal cancer. 14. A red, sore, or swollen breast These symptoms can indicate inflammatory breast cancer. Call your doctor about any unexplained changes to your breasts. 15. Nipple changes One of the most common changes women remember noticing before being diagnosed with breast cancer is a nipple that began to appear flattened, inverted, or turned sideways. 16. Unusually heavy or painful periods or bleeding between periods Many women report this as the tip-off to endometrial or uterine cancer. Ask for a transvaginal ultrasound if you suspect something more than routine heavy periods. 17. Swelling of facial features Some patients with lung cancer report noticing puffiness, swelling, or redness in the face. Small cell lung tumors commonly block blood vessels in the chest, preventing blood from flowing freely from your head and face. 18. A sore or skin lump that doesn’t heal, becomes crusty, or bleeds easily Familiarize yourself with the different types of skin cancer —melanoma, basal cell carcinoma, and squamous cell carcinoma — and be vigilant about checking skin all over your body for odd-looking growths or spots.

Detecting breast cancer in 3D

02:01
Breast cancer doesn't normally cause symptoms at first, and because of its complex structural characteristics, it's quite difficult to detect in the early stages. But local researchers say they have developed a new technology that can accurately detect abnormalities within the breast much more quickly. Connie Kim has more. Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women worldwide, but its survival rate when diagnosed in the early stages is close to 100 percent. The problem is that it's hard to detect in its initial phase with the existing diagnostic system. The internal breast is a complex area made of muscle, glandular tissue and fatty tissue, which makes it that much more difficult to spot cancer cells hidden inside with two-dimensional X-ray images. "Mammogram images show the breast tissue with overlapped layers, and even if you do spot something suspicious, it is hard to determine whether it is breast cancer." Local researchers have developed diagnostic equipment that can see the internal breast tissue in 3D. The device takes 15 X-ray pictures of the breast, each with a different incline of 3 degrees. Then software synthesizes the photos in a 3-D stereoscopic image, enabling doctors to see the breast tissue in great detail. "Previously, we had to depend on just one picture,... but this gives us an image that shows dozens of layers together. It gives us a 30 percent higher chance to detect cancer compared to the current method." There are currently over 16-thousand women in Korea who are living with breast cancer,... with the number increasing steadily by 10 percent each year. The new diagnostic method will be developed further and is expected to be commercialized by the end of 2015. Connie Kim, Arirang News.

05:20
Breast cancer patients often wonder about re-operation after a lumpectomy. As Dr. Harness explains, one of the dilemmas that doctors face when performing a lumpectomy is removing the right amount of the breast so that there is no cancer at the edges, but saving enough breast tissue for oncoplastic reconstruction.
