Pfizer's UK Viagra patent set to expire this month

00:48
Pfizer, maker of blockbuster erectile dysfunction drug Viagra, is expected to face new competitors in the UK when its patent on the drug's process expires later this month. This animation explains the malfunctioning chemical process which Viagra's active ingredient treats. During sexual arousal, the brain signals nerves fibers in arteries. These fibers release nitric oxide which triggers a chemical reaction. Cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP) is then released causing the arteries' walls to relax, increasing blood flow and producing an erection." Meanwhile, the enzyme phosphodiesterase-5, (PDE5) is counteracting the cGMP. As long arousal continues, the heightened blood flow and erection is maintained. In cases of erectile disfunction, insufficient cGMP is produced and is overwhelmed by PDE5. Viagra contains a PDE inhibitor which bonds with the enzyme and stops it from counteracting the cGMP. This allows enough of the chemical to accumulate and relax the artery walls, producing an erection. -------------------------------------------------------- TomoNews is your daily source for top animated news. Breaking News - Impotence drug Viagra to go on sale over the counter

06:58
Men seeking Viagra will no longer need a prescription from their GP after health officials reclassified the drug. For the first time, they will instead be able to buy it over the counter at chemists, as long as a pharmacist approves the little blue pills as safe for them to use.The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) announced that it is reclassifying Viagra Connect tablets following a public consultation.Manufacturer Pfizer plans to get stocks of the medication into UK pharmacies by spring 2018.Experts say making the tablets more widely available will help sufferers of erectile dysfunction (ED) who might not feel able to visit their GP.Pharmacists will be able to determine whether treatment is appropriate for the patient and can give advice on ED, usage of the medicine, potential side effects and assess if further consultation with a GP is required. But some men, including those with severe heart problems, those at high risk of heart problems, liver failure, kidney failure or those taking certain 'interacting medicines', will still need to be prescribed the drug under the supervision of a doctor.Officials hope the move will also help steer people away from buying drugs websites operating illegally. The MHRA said that ED medicines are a 'popular target' for criminals selling unlicensed and counterfeit medicines.Over the past five years the agency has seized more than £50 million of unlicensed and counterfeit impotency medicines.'This decision is good news for men's health,' said Mick Foy, MHRA's group manager in vigilance and risk management of medicines.'The move to make Viagra Connect more widely accessible will encourage men to seek help within the healthcare system and increase awareness of erectile dysfunction.'Erectile dysfunction can be a debilitating condition, so it's important men feel they have fast access to quality and legitimate care, and do not feel they need to turn to counterfeit online supplies which could have potentially serious side effects.'Manufacturer Pfizer said Viagra Connect – which contains the ingredient sildenafil at 50mg – said the move should protect men by limiting the likelihood of them turning to dodgy websites.UK medical director Dr Berkeley Phillips said: 'The availability of Viagra Connect in pharmacies from next year will offer men who are eligible for the product a new and convenient way to access sildenafil, a commonly prescribed treatment for erectile dysfunction.'We understand some men may avoid seeking support and treatment for this condition, so we believe giving them the option to talk to a pharmacist and buy Viagra Connect could be a real step forward in encouraging more men into the healthcare system.'As erectile dysfunction may be a sign of an underlying condition such as diabetes, high blood pressure, or heart disease, there could also be a wider benefit to public health in the long term.'We hope that this forthcoming new opportunity to purchase a genuine treatment via pharmacy will also reduce the likelihood of men turning to potentially ineffective and dangerous counterfeits from illicit sources.'GENERIC VERSION OF 'WEEKEND' ED DRUG CIALIS COULD BE AVAILABLE ON NHS The cost of an erectile dysfunction pill that lasts up to eight times longer than Viagra has been slashed by half – and could soon be available on prescription on the NHS. A generic version of Cialis has launched in the UK after the brand's patent ran out, opening up the market for cheaper versions. Tadal1

(6 Dec 2017) DANIEL LOBELLO IS AMONG THE MILLIONS OF MEN WHOSE SEX LIVES HAVE BEEN REINVIGORATED BY PILLS. SOUNDBITE: (English) Daniel Lobello, Erectile Dysfunction Patient: ++partially covered with b-roll++ "Having access to the medication has improved my relationship, because it takes a lot of the stress and tension away." FOR MANY ERECTILE DYSFUNCTION PATIENTS, IT ALSO TAKES AWAY A LOT OF THEIR CASH. SOUNDBITE: (English) Daniel Lobello, Erectile Dysfunction Patient: "The cost of the medication does limit the sex." THAT'S ABOUT TO CHANGE. PFIZER'S PATENT-PROTECTED MONOPOLY ON ITS BLOCKBUSTER IMPOTENCE DRUG VIAGRA ENDS NEXT WEEK. TWO GENERIC VERSIONS HIT THE MARKET ON MONDAY, AND MANY MORE, MUCH CHEAPER ONES, WILL ARRIVE IN JUNE. SOUNDBITE: (English) Dr. Matthias Hofer, Northwestern Memorial Hospital: ++partially covered with b-roll++ "It will specifically make a difference for patients who were not able to or unwilling to afford the expenses associated with Viagra now." PATIENTS LIKE BRIAN SMITH, WHO SOMETIMES HAD TO GO TO EXTREME MEASURES TO GET THEIR HANDS ON E-D MEDICATIONS. SOUNDBITE: (English) Brian Smith, Erectile Dysfunction Patient: ++partially covered with b-roll++ "Was it affordable? Out of the question in Medicare's way of doing it with my Part D medical coverage. But I found a way by going through illegal channels, and I bought them in Canada." PFIZER BELIEVES IT HAS FOUND A WAY TO BOTH HELP PATIENTS WITH THE COST AND FIGHT BACK AGAINST THE IMPENDING GENERICS GOING ON THE MARKET. THE DRUGMAKER IS TURNING ITS LITTLE BLUE PILL WHITE. SOUNDBITE: (English) Jim Sage, Pfizer Essential Health (partially covered): ++partially covered with b-roll++ "We will continue to support the branded version of Viagra. It'll maintain the same name. There will also be a generic version, and in our case, in Pfizer's case, we will have an authorized generic." SUPPORT FOR BRANDED VIAGRA INCLUDES A CASH HOME-DELIVERY PROGRAM AT HALF PRICE, INCREASED COPAY CARD DISCOUNTS FOR UNINSURED PATIENTS, AND COPAYMENTS AS LOW AS $20 FOR MOST INSURED PATIENTS. PFIZER WILL SELL ITS GENERIC VERSION AT HALF THE 65-DOLLAR-A-PILL RETAIL PRICE. PHARMACEUTICALS ANALYST ERIK GORDON SAYS PFIZER'S PLAN IS UNPRECEDENTED. SOUNDBITE: (English) Professor Erik Gordon, University of Michigan: ++partially covered with b-roll++ "What usually happens is companies cut off marketing, because they're going to lose 90 or 98 percent of the business pretty quickly no matter what they do. Pfizer is really hoping to keep a lot of the business. Even if it keeps 20 percent of the business, this campaign will be a success." BLUE, WHITE OR WHATEVER COLOR, MORE AFFORDABLE E-D PILLS SHOULD BE EASIER TO COME BY. MIKE HOUSEHOLDER, ASSOCIATED PRESS. Man's junk cut off after Viagra overdose causes days long erection, gangrene

00:50
Erection problems: An unnamed 66-year-old man from Gigante, Colombia had to amputate his member after he reportedly overdosed on the erectile dysfunction medication Viagra, according to officials. The man, apparently a former member of the Gigante municipal council, told a local newspaper Colombia Reports that he had intentionally overdosed on Viagra because he wanted to impress his new girlfriend. What happened was an erection that lasted several days before the man decided to seek medical help. No word as to why the man didn't think to seek help much sooner, say, after experiencing an erection for a few hours. Gigante doctors referred the man to a medical facility in Neiva, where experts said his junk had become inflamed, fractured and even showed signs of gangrene. In order to prevent the inflammation and gangrene from spreading further, they had to amputate the appendage. According to local newspaper La Nacion, a doctor said the man also showed bruising on his testicles and ding-a-ling. What the man suffered from is called priapism, where some Viagra users unfortunately suffer from a prolonged erection that has nothing to do with sexual desire. Usually such prolonged erections are quite painful. -------------------------------------------------------- TomoNews is your daily source for top animated news. Viagra: What men really need to know

09:41
Last week Britain became the first country in the world to allow the libido-boosting drug to be bought over the counter from pharmacies at £5 a pill, rather than on prescription.Drug firm Pfizer says it hopes that making sildenafil, sold under the brand name Viagra Connect, more widely available will mean that men who had not previously sought help for impotence would be more likely to do so.It’s estimated that about 4.3 million men in the UK suffer from impotence but very few seek treatment because they are embarrassed about the condition. In truth, the decision was prompted in part by the huge rise of an online black market for unregulated erectile dysfunction drugs. In 2016 alone £17million worth of counterfeit Viagra was seized in the UK.Nevertheless the move has been welcomed by health chiefs who believe that having it available in pharmacies will not only counteract the impact of potentially dangerous counterfeit drugs but also help lessen the stigma of erectile dysfunction (ED).However some medics are urging caution, pointing out that men who have difficulty getting or maintaining a proper erection often have underlying health problems such as diabetes, high blood pressure and stress. Here we look at what you need to consider before buying the little blue pills. What is it and who can buy it?Viagra Connect is the first medicine for the symptoms of erectile dysfunction to be made available over the counter in UK pharmacies. It contains 50mg of the active ingredient sildenafil, which belongs to a group of medicines called phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE 5) inhibitors. It should only be prescribed to men who have impotence and who are medically fit enough to have .No one under the age of 18 should be able to buy it.It is available in Boots exclusively (both in store and online) until April 10 and after that it will be available in 14,000 pharmacies nationwide and online.GETTYDoes it work for everyone? No, it is thought to be effective in about two-thirds of cases. The drug works by helping to relax the blood vessels, allowing blood to flow into the penis when ually stimulated. This helps to maintain firmer erections. It is quickly absorbed into the bloodstream and takes between 30 and 60 minutes to work and will remain active in the body for up to four hours.NCHow much does it cost? or eight for £34.99.At present GPs can still prescribe it at the cost of a NHS prescription which is £8.80.But in the current cost-cutting climate where some over-the-counter medicines such as hay fever and thrush treatments are no longer funded in some regions, drugs for erectile problems may go the same way. Also Pfizer’s exclusive 15-year patent on Viagra ran out in 2013, enabling cheaper, generic drugs to be available in the UK. Can I buy Viagra off the shelf? No. You need to ask a pharmacist for it. You can ask to have this conversation in a private room. While the consultation won’t require a physical examination, you will have to answer a series of questions ab

Pfizer to Begin Selling Generic Version of Viagra

00:40
Pharmaceutical company Pfizer announced Wednesday it will begin selling a generic version of its erectile dysfunction drug Viagra. Beginning Monday, Pfizer will sell a generic version of sildenafil in the United States for half the $65-per-pill retail price of the name-brand pill. The new generic brand of sildenafil will use white pills to differentiate itself from Viagra's famous "little blue pill." Pfizer introduced Viagra in March 1998 when it discovered sildenafil, a failed angina medication, caused men to get sustained erections. https://www.upi.com/Health_News/2017/12/06/Pfizer-to-begin-selling-generic-version-of-Viagra/7861512602205/ http://www.wochit.com This video was produced by YT Wochit News using http://wochit.com

INDIA: PHARMACEUTICAL COMPANIES RACE TO PRODUCE A VIAGRA CLONE

02:52
Hindi/English/Nat Viagra may have made a sensational debut on the Western market but a different kind of competition awaits the anti-impotence pill in India. Favourable patent laws have spurred a race among the Indian pharmaceutical companies to produce a Viagra clone. However, India's traditional doctors have snubbed the Viagra hype, claiming their ancient herbal sex potions are far more potent - and cheaper - than any modern day pill. The race for the Indian version of Viagra is on. Just months after the anti-impotency pill hit the Western world, dozens of Indian versions of the drug are waiting for approval by the Indian government. India is one of world's largest drug industries but it only recognises process patents. This has prompted "copycats" to try to develop a slightly different process to make a Viagra clone. Presently, about 10 Indian pharmaceutical companies are in the race to process Sildenafil Citrate - the active ingredient in the Viagra wonder pill. The competition is so fierce that some companies have already started exporting the ingredient - even though they are still waiting for permission to market the product locally. What's driving these companies is a potential market of one (b) billion people - and that means big dollars. SOUNDBITE ( English) "As far as Indian companies are concerned, I am talking of established companies, definitely they will come up with very high quality. And price advantage will be there, it is definite... it is almost certain." SUPER CAPTION: Dr. S Sarangan, Kopran Limited In the land of Kama Sutra, sexual inadequacies have long been treated by ancient medical wisdom. On the streets of the Indian capital, hundreds of pavement doctors line the streets peddling traditional cures for impotence. For these roadside doctors, a strong belief in the potency of their magic potions is more important than conducting clinical trials. They claim their remedies offer vigour and vitality - using the rejuvenating properties of well known Indian herbs. These traditional remedies feature heavily in Indian folklore about Mughal emperors and kings who relied on herbal aphrodisiacs to keep their numerous wives satisfied. What's more - they're incredibly cheap. For a country where the problem lies more in ignorance than impotence, traditional alternatives are generally favoured. Sex clinics which offer indigenous cures boast a roaring trade. Run by a family of sexologists who practise traditional medicine, Sablok clinic has been in the business for nearly 70 years. Dr. Sablok scoffs at the hype created by Viagra and says the Indian masses just can't afford the expensive blue pill. SOUNDBITE ( English) "Making that person feel the pleasure out of a pill which you have given him at that moment and which.....obviously its expensive - I mean every other fellow can't afford it. So next time if he doesn't have that much money or he can't spend that much of amount , where does he go ?" SUPER CAPTION : Dr. Vikram Sablok , Sexologist India's lucrative sex-tonic market has attracted dozens of companies aggressively marketing various brands of attractively packaged, indigenous sex-elixirs. Advocates say Viagra can do no damage to their profitable trade - simply because their medication is without any side effects. SOUNDBITE (English) "We have very potent herbs and remedies which can definitely match Viagra - no doubt about it. In fact I should say that hopefully we will be a step ahead of them." SUPER CAPTION: Dr. Vikram Sablok, Sexologist In India's commercial capital, Bombay, Viagra is likely to face competition of a different kind. The current big seller is known as the "bed-breaker" thanks to its aphrodisiac additives. Female Viagra? Does it exist?

02:56
I am asked frequently if women can take Viagra. Men and women generally have different issues. Men usually complain of performance problems, not sex drive. Women "usually" are looking to improve their low libido. If they have performance issues, it is more related to the vaginal changes of menopause. Studies in women were very disappointing, because it does NOT improve libido, and should have been obvious at the onset of the study. A new medicine, “Flibanserin" is a novel drug, that reportedly works to improve libido in women by stimulating the brain. It was denied by the FDA, but has just resubmitted an application to be approved. It stimulates neurotransmitters in the brain, similar to an antidepressant, but it does it in a different part of the brain.

Breaking News - Half-price generic version of Viagra to hit the shelves

08:02
Viagra is getting a cheaper, generic makeover from Pfizer in an effort to preempt competitors.Pfizer has repackaged its famous little blue impotence pill in a white tablet, called sildenafil, and will slash the$65-a-pill retail price of its blockbuster drug by half starting Monday. The pharmaceutical giant's patent for Viagra is set to expire next week, opening the flood gates for competitors to jump into the market with their cheaper generic versions.Rather than lose most of its sales to other companies, Pfizer is banking on the lower price point of and the 40 percent of its customer base that claims to be loyal to Viagra to help the company ride the wave of generics slated to undercut Viagra's prices by as much as 90 percent.'Patients are paying fortunes. When generic Viagra comes out, they will be very happy,' said Dr Nachum Katlowitz, a urologist at New York's Staten Island University Hospital.Launched in 1998, Viagra was the first pill for impotence. It transformed a private frustration for many aging men into a publicly discussed medical condition with an easy treatment, far more appealing than options like penile injections and implants. Pfizer's early TV ads for the little blue pill even coined the term erectile dysfunction, ED for short.Eli Lilly's Cialis came out in 2003 and now dominates the U.S. market with on-demand pills and daily, low-dose ones. Viagra is a close second.Pfizer says its market research shows 20 percent of customers are loyal to Viagra. So rather than give up sales to generic makers as brand-name drug makers once routinely did, the company is selling its own generic and also fighting to keep men on its blue pills.'We believe that the story for Viagra isn't done. It's just going to be a new chapter,' said Jim Sage, president of U.S. brands for Pfizer Essential Health, which sells its older medicines. In January, the drug maker will offer two new discount programs and increase its co-payment card discounts. Uninsured men can get brand-name Viagra half off through an innovative online home delivery program, Pfizer Direct. Many insured patients will be able to get a month's prescription - typically six to 10 pills, depending on plan limits - for as little as a $20 co-payment.'This is the most comprehensive pricing and marketing response I've seen to a generic,' said Erik Gordon, a pharmaceuticals analyst at the University of Michigan's business school. 'It's unprecedented.'Gordon thinks Pfizer's reduced prices will retain some patients and attract others who buy pills, often counterfeits, from the internet.Dr. Matthias Hofer, a urologist at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago, said some of his insured patients who take Viagra wouldn't want a generic. 'They will be ecstatic if they can save money and get the brand product from Pfizer,' he said.Last year, more than 12 million prescriptions for Viagra and Cialis were filled in the US, generating a combined $3 billion in sales, according to health data and clinical resea AutoNews- Source: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/health/article-5152483/Viagra-goes-generic-Pfizer-launch-little-white-pill.html?ITO=1490&ns_mchannel=rss&ns_campaign=1490

Viagra could help treat infants

01:55
The little blue pill known the world over for treating erectile dysfunction in adults may be able to treat certain lymphatic conditions in infants. US doctors first used Viagra on an infant girl with severe lymphatic malformation wrapped around her heart. Within a year, doctors say MRIs showed the lymphatic malformation disappeared. An initial trial with a small number of children has proven to be a positive step, but in order for further conclusions to be drawn more research will have to be conducted. Pfizer’s Future Dep

06:04
ill out triangle worksheet using attached article Pfizer’s Future Depends on IT Transformation – Kim S. Nash, CIO October 28, 2011 Chip-munching, sedentary people have made Pfizer a bundle of money. Lipitor, a drug that lowers cholesterol, ranks as Pfizer’s top-selling pill for 12 years running. A blockbuster among blockbusters, Lipitor brought in .7 billion, or 16 percent, of the company’s .8 billion in revenues last year. This month, though, Pfizer loses a crucial patent protection on Lipitor and, with it, the exclusive right to make and sell the drug. Competitors are ready to swoop in with generic versions and swoop out with many billions of dollars. In the next four years, patents on six other key Pfizer medicines are due to expire. Viagra, the drug of choice for treating erectile dysfunction, is another huge product for Pfizer. The company went to court this summer to fight for control of it after a challenge from a generics maker. To Pfizer’s relief, a judge ruled that a key Viagra patent is valid until 2019. Still, Pfizer knows it can’t rely on super pills alone to stay vital. In the past few years, it has conducted large cost-cutting projects, including shrinking its workforce by tens of thousands and its research budget by billions. Slashing operations costs means that patent expirations won’t be such a blow, relatively speaking. But the company also seeks new sources of business that will produce reliable sales for decades. Key to the plan is cultivating relationships with individual patients, especially in emerging markets such as Brazil, China and India. By helping people work with their doctors and pharmacies to manage lifelong conditions such as arthritis and hypertension, Pfizer hopes to nurture lifelong customers. Hunting blockbusters remains important for Pfizer, but holding the hands of individual patients is a growing strategy for the company. The pharmaceutical industry at large faces similar challenges, resulting in layoffs, mergers and R
