WHAT IS HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE: Blood pressure is measured in millimetres of mercury (mmHg) and is given as two figures: Systolic pressure – The pressure when your heart pushes blood out. Diastolic pressure – The pressure when your heart rests between beats. As a general guide: High blood pressure is considered to be 140/90mmHg or higher (or an average of 135/85mmHg at home) Ideal blood pressure is considered to be between 90/60mmHg and 120/80mmHg Low blood pressure is considered to be 90/60mmHg or lower. A blood pressure reading between 120/80mmHg and 140/90mmHg could mean you're at risk of developing high blood pressure if you don't take steps to keep your blood pressure under control. HOW TO PREVENT HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE: High blood pressure can often be prevented or reduced by eating healthily, maintaining a healthy weight, taking regular exercise, drinking alcohol in moderation and not smoking. Heart Pumping and Blood Pressure: Human body contains 5-6 liters of blood depending on the sex and age. Almost 5 liters of blood passes through the heart and is purified every second. Heart separates deoxygenated blood from oxygenated blood, send the deoxygenated blood to the lungs for getting oxygen and the oxygenated blood to all part of the body. Your blood pressure is at its lowest in mid-pregnancy and starts to rise gradually again from 24 weeks pregnant. By this time, you’ll have made an extra litre (1.8 pints) of blood, which your heart has to pump around your body. If all is well, your blood pressure will return to its pre-pregnancy levels in the last few weeks before your baby is born. How is my blood pressure measured? Your midwife will use a small monitor to measure and record your blood pressure at every antenatal check-up. Before your midwife measures your blood pressure, she’ll ask you to sit down and remove any tight clothing from your arm. Then she’ll wrap a cuff around your arm above your elbow and pump air into it. The cuff inflates and briefly stops the blood flow in the main blood vessel in your arm. It will feel tight, but it shouldn’t hurt. Then the air in the cuff is slowly released. The cuff is attached to the monitor, which calculates your blood pressure and shows a reading to your midwife. The reading will show two figures that look like a fraction: for example, 110/70. The first, or top, number tells your midwife about your blood pressure as your heart pushes the blood round your body (systolic blood pressure). The second, or bottom, number is your blood pressure when your heart relaxes between beats (diastolic). What’s normal for you could be different from other mums-to-be, so it’s best not to compare results. The average blood pressure range if you’re healthy is between 110/70 and 120/80, although this varies a lot in pregnancy. Your midwife will tell you if your numbers are high. She’ll diagnose high blood pressure if your top figure (systolic) is 140 or higher, or your bottom figure (diastolic) is 90 or more. There are three grades of high blood pressure (hypertension): mild hypertension is when your top figure is between 140 and 149 and your bottom figure is between 90 and 99 moderate hypertension is when your top figure is between 150 and 159 and your bottom figure is between 100 and 109 severe hypertension is when your top figure is 160 or greater and your bottom figure is 110 or greater During an antenatal appointment, if your midwife discovers you have high blood pressure, she’ll ask you to come back and have it checked again or go to your local maternity unit for monitoring. If it’s severe, you may be admitted to hospital until it falls. High blood pressure has different names, depending on what stage in your pregnancy you develop it: Before you’re 20 weeks pregnant, if you have high blood pressure, it’s called chronic hypertension or pre-existing high blood pressure. This means you probably had high blood pressure before you became pregnant. You’ll only know for sure if this is the case if your blood pressure stays high after your baby is born. After 20 weeks, high blood pressure is called gestational hypertension. This is the name for high blood pressure that develops only during pregnancy. Gestational hypertension isn’t usually a problem, although you’ll be referred to hospital for more testing and monitoring, just in case.

How To Check Your Pulse Rate in Easy Steps

how to check your pulse, Checking your pulse allows you to determine your heart rate without any special equipment. This can be useful if you're trying to lose weight or you have a brain condition. Read on to find out how easy and painless it is to check your pulse (1) Use your index finger and middle finger when finding your pulse. Don't use your thumb, as its own pulse is strong enough to interfere with your reading. Find the radial pulse. This is the pulse on the side of the wrist nearest your body. Use the pads of your fingers. Place them just below the wrist creases on the thumb side. Press lightly until you feel the blood pulsing under your skin. If necessary, move your fingers around a bit until you feel the pulse. (It's there, just not always easy to locate.) Find the carotid pulse. To feel a pulse on the side of the neck just below the jaw line, place your index and middle fingers in the hollow between the windpipe and the large muscle in the neck. Press lightly until you feel a pulse. This is sometimes easier than finding the pulse in your wrists. (2) Check and record your heart rate. Use a watch or clock with a second hand or digital second display. Count the number of times you feel a throb for one minute (60 seconds). This is the most accurate method. If you're in a hurry, you could count the beats you feel for 15 seconds and multiply by four or count beats for 30 seconds and multiply by two. These options will work but are not quite as accurate as counting for a full minute. (3) Establish your normal heart rate. The normal resting heart rate for an adult is 60-100 beats per minute. Normal heart rate for children under 18 is 70-120 beats per minute. This applies to a person who is at rest. Any physical activity will increase the pulse rate. (4) Check the strength of the pulse to see if it is strong or weak. The strength of your pulse cannot be calculated precisely, but experienced professionals will characterize a pulse as "weak", "faint", "strong", or "bounding". This is an indication of the health of the heart and vascular system (5) Check the rhythm of your pulse. You're looking for regularity of pulsations and the pauses between them. If your pulse is steady, note it as "regular." If you detect a skip or other fluctuation in the pulse, it may be termed "irregular." This is not necessarily a cause for alarm, but if you note a consistent irregularity, you should seek medical advice (as noted below) What To Do If You Can't Find Your Pulse (1) Try using your fingertips instead of laying your fingers across your wrist. Place the tips in different places and stop at each location for five seconds. (2) Try varying the pressure of your fingertips on your wrist. Sometimes either lightening your touch or pressing harder will help you find a pulse. (3) Try checking for a pulse while dropping your hand toward the floor. Holding your hand up near your head can make your pulse less distinct. Dropping your hand will slightly alter your blood flow through that wrist and make it easier to detect a pulse. (4) Use a stethoscope. If you have such an instrument, use it here. Lift up or remove your shirt, hold the stethoscope against your bare chest, and listen. Count each beat as you hear it, and listen for any skipped beats. Finding Your Maximum And Target Heart Rates (1) Find your potential maximum heart rate. This is the highest your pulse rate can get. You will use your potential maximum heart rate to determine your target heart rate. To find yours, follow this formula: 220 - your age = predicted maximum heart rate. Try exercising intensely for 30 minutes. Check your heart rate immediately after (or even during) your exercise. Compare your actual exercising heart rate to your potential maximum rate. The numbers should be fairly close. If you're taking your pulse during exercise, keep your feet moving as you do so or blood might accumulate in your extremities. (2) Find your target heart rate. This is 60 to 85 percent of your maximum heart rate. The reason there is a range rather than a solid number is that everyone has a different fitness level.
