Water and Weather: Forecasting Weather - Lesson 18

03:57
Water and Weather: From the Flood to Forecasts is a full color book published by Master Books and written by career science educators Tom DeRosa and Dr. Carolyn Reeves. The lessons are designed to help students discover how the catastrophic waters from Noah’s Flood shaped the world’s geologic features, as well as to understand today’s weather events and patterns. Each lesson begins with an investigative activity that helps to clarify the scientific explanations given. Students will learn about such topics as the creation of fossils, evaporation and the water cycle, ocean zones and currents, God’s system of purifying water, weather instruments, weather forecasting, and the Ice Age. A lesson on natural watersheds and drainage systems makes a connection to the historical expedition of Lewis and Clark. The videos demonstrate each activity as a way to help parents and instructors plan and prepare for the investigative part of each lesson. Video credits: videography by Georgia Kergosien; script writing by Carolyn Reeves; executive coordinator, Creation Studies Institute. Weather maps and photographs of deep ocean life forms are obtained courtesy of National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). Making a Weather Forecast with a GOES-R Series Weather Satellite

03:24
Learn more about the GOES-R series of satellites and what they can do! http://www.goes-r.gov Find more fun videos, activities, and articles about weather and Earth science! https://www.scijinks.gov . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Whoa. Things are looking pret-ty bad down there. But don’t worry. I’m going to give weather forecasters a heads up and help you stay safe! I’m a GOES-R series weather satellite, and one of my jobs is to keep an eye on Earth’s weather as I orbit above. But I’m 22,000 miles above Earth! How does your local weather forecaster know what I see all the way up here? First, I have to figure out what’s going on. I point my special camera at the Earth and take pictures of the clouds I see below. My pictures show where the clouds are, but I also take lots of other notes about the clouds. For example, how high they reach into the atmosphere, how much rain they might cause, and when a severe storm may be forming. But I can’t keep all of this information to myself—I have to share it with weather forecasters down on Earth! A big antenna is waiting for my call. Since I’m a satellite, I send my pictures and notes in a computer language of ones and zeros. Luckily, the antenna speaks my language. Computers connected to the antenna organize my notes and combine all of the pictures and cloud information and translate them into weather maps. They send a version of the maps back up to me. I’ll hold onto these for later. Another copy of the maps is split into smaller pieces. This helps the maps move faster from one place to another. The map pieces are then sent for processing before being sent back up in the sky to a communications satellite. From there, the maps are picked up by antennas at the National Weather Service Forecast Offices in each region. There are more than 100 offices! I also take the maps that I received and send them out to companies that specialize in making the maps more colorful and better for viewing on TVs and computers. The colorful maps—and the maps from the forecast offices—then go to your local weather forecaster. The forecaster combines the information from these maps with lots of other information like model forecast data and radar data to make predictions about the upcoming weather in your area. And that’s how I help you find out if bad weather is going to ruin your afternoon plans! You’re welcome! . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . NOAA raises its Atlantic Hurricane Activity Prediction again.

06:32
Get ready for the Active Atlantic Hurricane Season. God Bless everyone, T @newTHOR on twitter https://www.facebook.com/thornewsgo article http://www.noaa.gov/media-release/early-season-storms-one-indicator-of-active-atlantic-hurricane-season-ahead Early-season storms one indicator of active Atlantic hurricane season ahead Above-normal season likely with 14 to 19 named storms Today NOAA issued the scheduled update for its 2017 hurricane season outlook. Forecasters are now predicting a higher likelihood of an above-normal season, and they increased the predicted number of named storms and major hurricanes. The season has the potential to be extremely active, and could be the most active since 2010. Forecasters now say there is a 60-percent chance of an above-normal season (compared to the May prediction of 45 percent chance), with 14-19 named storms (increased from the May predicted range of 11-17) and 2-5 major hurricanes (increased from the May predicted range of 2-4). A prediction for 5-9 hurricanes remains unchanged from the intial May outlook. “We’re now entering the peak of the season when the bulk of the storms usually form,” said Gerry Bell, Ph.D., lead seasonal hurricane forecaster at NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center. “The wind and air patterns in the area of the tropical Atlantic and Caribbean where many storms develop are very conducive to an above-normal season. This is in part because the chance of an El Nino forming, which tends to prevent storms from strengthening, has dropped significantly from May.” Bell noted other factors that point to an above-normal season include warmer waters across the tropical Atlantic than models previously predicted and higher predicted activity from available models. In just the first nine weeks of this season there have been six named storms, which is half the number of storms during an average six-month season and double the number of storms that would typically form by early August. An average Atlantic hurricane season, which runs from June 1-November 30, produces 12 named storms, of which six become hurricanes, including three major hurricanes. “Today’s updated outlook underscores the need for everyone to know their true vulnerabilities to storms and storm surge,” said FEMA Administrator Brock Long. “As we enter the height of hurricane season, it’s important for everyone to know who issues evacuation orders in their community, heed the warnings, update their insurance and have a preparedness plan.” The updated outlook is based on the current and evolving atmospheric and oceanic conditions, the most recent model predictions, and pre-and early-season storm activity. The numbers announced today include the season activity to-date. The Atlantic basin has seen six named storms (Arlene in April; Bret and Cindy in June; Don and Emily in July; and Franklin in August). Two of these storms, Cindy and Emily, struck the United States. Cindy made landfall on June 22 at the Louisiana-Texas border and caused heavy rain, inland flooding and multiple tornado outbreaks. Emily made landfall on July 31 in Anna Maria Island, Florida. Franklin is predicted to make landfall in Mexico overnight as a hurricane. Today’s update also decreases the chance of a near-normal season from 35 percent to 30 percent, and a below-normal season from 20 percent to only 10 percent from the initial outlook issued in May. As we move into the peak of hurricane season, when hurricanes are most frequent and at their strongest, NOAA urges coastal residents to make sure they have their hurricane preparedness plans in place and to monitor the latest forecasts.

Building a Resilient Nation, with APA and NOAA

01:10:07
As communities and businesses around the United States face increasing risks and vulnerability to natural disasters and long-term environmental changes, there is an increasing demand for information, data, products, and services to address these challenges. In this 2016 National Planning Conference session, Dr. Kathryn Sullivan, Under Secretary of Commerce for Oceans and Atmosphere and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Administrator, outlines how the nation’s environmental intelligence agency is meeting these needs to build resilient communities and businesses. Every day, NOAA helps individuals, businesses, and governments make smart decisions that directly impact the future of society, the economy, and the environment. From investing in state-of-the-art observational infrastructure to evolving the U.S. Weather Service to meet the growing needs for more accurate and timely weather and climate information, Dr. Sullivan describes the agency’s efforts to improve its capacity to predict, respond to, and recuperate from high-impact weather and hydrologic events. Dr. Sullivan also outlines NOAA’s new Integrated Water Initiative, a five-year vision to initiate a number of new products and services to strengthen the nation’s water security, reduce water vulnerability, and enable greater efficiency and effectiveness in how we manage and utilize water resources. NOAA and APA have a long history of collaboration focused on helping communities cope with drought and floods, improve water quality, and reduce coastal inundation among other threats. Learn more about the work underway and how NOAA is working to build living and thriving communities. Solar Storm heads for Earth and could impact power Grids and weather on Earth. (March 8, 2012)

05:45
(CNN)-U.S. politics had its "Super Tuesday" yesterday, and so did the sun, says Joseph Kunches from NOAA's Space Weather Prediction Center in Boulder, Colorado. That's because the sun had two solar flares associated with two coronal mass ejections. Coronal mass ejections involve massive amounts of energy and charged particles shooting out of the sun, and can cause problems if directed at Earth, as was the case over the last couple of days. This event may stir up a geomagnetic storm, and lead to disruptions to high-frequency radio communications, global positioning systems and power grids, NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center said Wednesday. The peak of the storm is expected to hit Thursday morning; it may gradually diminish by Friday morning. One of these coronal mass ejections is the strongest since December 2006, NOAA said. The equivalent of 10 billion tons of highly charged particles are hurtling at a rate of 3 million to 4 million miles an hour toward Earth. NASA says the leading edge of this coronal mass ejection will hit Earth at 1:25 a.m. E.T. (give or take seven hours). The sun is currently in a cycle of increased sun spots. This is part of an 11-year cycle that is expected to peak over the next year. The magnetic field in a sunspot stores energy that is released in solar flares. These flares are intense bursts of radiation that get ejected into space. NOAA measures various aspects of the ejections that occur. Four main components define solar activity: solar flares, coronal mass ejections, high-speed solar wind and solar energetic particles. As an event occurs, some of the particles reach Earth almost immediately. These highly charged particles are more of a threat to spacecraft and astronauts than to us on the planet's surface. The bulk plasma from the coronal mass ejection can take between 30 and 72 hours to reach the earth. This can cause interruptions to power grids, GPS systems, and some flights that are near the poles. The one positive outcome is the brilliant auroras (Northern and Southern Lights). These occur as the particles from the ejection interact with the Earth's magnetic field, creating colorful displays. NOAA has a chart that classifies these solar storms. This latest coronal mass ejection is forecast to rate as a "strong G3" geomagnetic storm, a measure of the disturbances in the geomagnetic field that helps protect the Earth from dangerous particles, and a "severe S4" solar radiation storm which is a measure of radiation that occurs when the numbers of energetic particles increases. The Space Prediction Center expects that we are in a favorable pattern for at least the next week to potentially bring more solar storms to the earth. What is not known is the magnitude of future events. What is expected is quite a show from the Northern Lights Wednesday night and Thursday night, which may be visible as far south as Michigan and Illinois. http://lightyears.blogs.cnn.com/2012/03/07/solar-flare-heads-for-earth/?hpt=hp_c2

Water and Weather: Where the Rivers Run into the Sea - Lesson 11

02:25
Tips For Dealing With Severe Weather In An RV

04:32
Mount Comfort RV's Good (and Bad) Tips for dealing with severe weather and tornadoes in an RV or travel trailer. We know these tips get tossed around a lot and people sometimes just ignore them. We figured if we came up with a goofy way to present them people might actually pay attention. Stay safe RVers! http://www.mountcomfortrv.com/ 10 Tips for Dealing with Severe Weather in an RV. 1. Develop a disaster plan for you and your family. 2. Get a NOAA weather radio and store extra charged batteries with the radio. 3. Identify a safe place for you to take shelter. 4. Know exactly where you are, so that you can get accurate weather information. 5. It only takes two feet of water to float an RV. Do not drive into flooded areas. 6. Respect & fear severe thunderstorm winds, as they can reach speeds of 100 to 150 MPH. (faster than hurricanes) 7. 30/30 rule- if the time between lightning strikes and thunder is less than 30 seconds, you need to take shelter. 8. Do NOT try to outrun a tornado in an RV; instead you should take shelter immediately. 9. If caught outside during a tornado, lie flat on the ground and cover your head to protect yourself from flying debris. 10. No place is totally safe during a tornado, but your best option is usually underground.

Weather strategy for pilots: improve your preflight and inflight decision making

01:17:33
Flying and weather are inseparable. Every pilot must understand weather fundamentals and possess a healthy curiosity of the unknown. In addition to weather theory, never has there been more weather information more readily available to pilots. To use this information for your maximum benefit, you need to know where to look and how to make effective use of the available weather tools. Broadcast Meteorologist Scott Dimmich and CFI Bret Koebbe goe beyond the basics of weather theory to help you, as a pilot, make better, more informed interpretations of weather and make sound weather decisions.

Water and Weather: Can Rocks Tell Time - Lesson 5

04:15
The text, teacher guide, and student journal for Water and Weather: From the Flood to Forecasts can be obtained from www. Masterbooks.net or from www.CreationStudies.org
