(NYSE:NI) is one of the largest fully regulated utility companies in the United States, serving approximately 3.5 million natural gas customers and 500,000 electric customers across seven states through its local Columbia Gas and NIPSCO brands. The company, based in Merrillville, Indiana, has more than 7,000 employees... Company operations NiSource's natural gas utilities provide domestically produced supplies of natural gas to residential, commercial and industrial customers via nearly 60,000 miles of pipeline and related facilities in seven states: Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, Massachusetts, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Virginia. NiSource provides electric energy to nearly 500,000 customers, all located in northern Indiana. NiSource’s electric operations include power generation, transmission and local distribution, as well as wholesale and electric transmission transactions. NiSource uses both traditional and renewable generation sources, including natural gas, hydroelectric, wind, and coal generated supplies, providing a total system operating net capability of more than 3,000 megawatts. In 2015, NiSource was named to the Dow Jones Sustainability - North America Index for the second year in a row and for the ninth time since 1999. Internal organization NiSource operates seven local utilities in its service region. - Northern Indiana Public Service Co. (NIPSCO) - Columbia Gas of Massachusetts (Previously Bay State Gas) - Columbia Gas of Ohio - Columbia Gas of Kentucky - Columbia Gas of Pennsylvania - Columbia Gas of Maryland - Columbia Gas of Virginia Recent corporate actions On July 1, 2015, NiSource separated Columbia Pipeline Group (NYSE: CPGX) into a stand-alone publicly traded company. Each NiSource shareholder at the time of the separation received one share of Columbia Pipeline Group for each share of NiSource. The separation of Columbia Pipeline Group included Columbia Gas Transmission, Columbia Gulf Transmission, Columbia Midstream Group, its ownership in Columbia Pipeline Partners (NYSE: CPPL), and other natural gas pipeline, storage and midstream holdings. Criticism In December 2011, the non-partisan organization Public Campaign criticized NiSource for spending $1.83 million on lobbying and not paying any taxes during 2008-2010, instead getting $227 million in tax rebates, despite making a profit of $1.4 billion, and increasing executive pay by 33% to $11.2 million in 2010 for its top 5 executives. One rule NiSource, among other companies, benefitted from was a bonus depreciation rule that lowered the federal tax expense. NiSource stated, “This law, enacted by Congress, encouraged companies like NiSource to accelerate capital investments to spur economic recovery by permitting portions of these investments to be deducted at an accelerated rate. Only the timing of the deductions was changed, and not the amount that could be deducted. This means our income tax expense will likely be higher in the future.”

Trump Admin Opens Up Alaska for Drilling, Threatening Already At-Risk Arctic Biodiversity

08:47
https://democracynow.org - We begin today’s show with the historic announcement by the Trump administration to approve a plan to drill for oil off the Alaska coast. On Wednesday, the Department of the Interior approved Hilcorp Energy’s proposal to drill in the Beaufort Sea, six miles off the Alaskan coast. It would be the first oil and gas production facility in federal waters in Alaska. Hilcorp plans to build a nine-acre artificial island about 20 miles east of Prudhoe Bay, not far from the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. Dubbed the Liberty Project, the operation plans to extract about 70,000 barrels of oil per day on the state’s North Slope. This latest move continues the Trump administration’s targeting of the Alaskan Arctic. We’re joined by Subhankar Banerjee, activist, photographer and professor of art and ecology at the University of New Mexico. He is the author of “Arctic National Wildlife Refuge: Seasons of Life and Land” and editor of “Arctic Voices: Resistance at the Tipping Point.” His work is included in the exhibition “Nature’s Nation: American Art and Environment” at the Princeton University Art Museum. Regulator Garretson KN Beam Impco how valve works for Propane or Natural gas generator

08:16
This video to explain how the valve works on a beam type regulator used on a natural gas or propane engine. These units are used often on emergency generators. I do not sell these regulators but have some to experiment with converting gas engines to run on Natural gas or Propane. This is a model 039-121 regulator it has a manual primer. Pushing the "prime" button allows gas to flow through the unit and thus fill or flood the venturi carb area with propane or natural gas to allow starting. With a pull rope start engine a manual prime often is required. With an electric start engine if the rpms are high enough a manual prime might not be required. There has to be enough vacuum from the venturi in the intake carb area to open up the beam balance on the regulator. There are many diagrams on the web explaining how this type of regulator works and videos showing them in operation.

China's New "Silk Road": Future MEGAPROJECTS

11:17
China's $1 trillion One Belt One Road (New Silk Road) initiative is unprecedented in size and scope. President Xi Jinping has sealed megaproject deals with 65 countries to construct ports, power stations, rail lines, roads, and all the tunnels and bridges needed to connect them back to mainland China. Script: Having recently completed both the world’s most extensive system of expressways and the planet’s longest high speed rail network, China is now looking beyond its borders for opportunities to keep building. President Xi Jinping announced at a recent summit that Beijing has sealed megaproject deals with 65 countries throughout Eurasia and Africa to construct ports, power stations, rail lines, roads, and all the tunnels and bridges needed to connect them back to mainland China. At a total cost of over $1 trillion, the One Belt, One Road initiative is unprecedented in size and scope. So is the bold funding mechanism: China will use its large, state-run banks to provide most of the financing, a risky move, when you consider how few of the nations in the O.B.O.R. could afford something like this on their own. “Oh,” say the leaders of economically-challenged, underdeveloped Laos, Yemen, or Ethiopia — or the blood-soaked regime of Bashar al-Assad in war-ravaged Syria — “you want to loan us billions of dollars to build some cool stuff in our countries? Of course, why not!?” China is hard-selling the project as a way to boost its westward connections, an update of the silk road trade route that played a significant role in developing China and the rest of the region 1,000 years ago. But many analysts see this comparison as little more than a marketing pitch. Al Jazeera clip: “Is the real point of this, East-West service then simply to boost China’s westward connections? [Pauline Loong] “Well I wouldn’t say simply to boost China’s westward connections, but I totally agree with Charles that it’s more a PR stunt. To call it the “Silk Road,” that’s really brilliant—evocative of romantic camel travels in the past. When, you know, you have these lovely silks and trade and so forth. And it’s good, because look at all the headlines it has been getting, but in practical terms, it’s early days yet.” [Bryce] Aside from the lessons China learned from its own recent infrastructure boom, Beijing is also drawing inspiration from the American Marshall Plan which financed the rebuilding of Western Europe after it was decimated during the second world war. That program was worth the equivalent of $130 billion in today’s dollars and ensured the US had reliable export markets for the manufactured goods and machinery its growing economy had become dependent on producing. China’s modern version — first announced in 2013 — is the signature initiative of President Xi Jinping. Several projects have already been completed. Earlier this year London became the 15th European city connected directly to China through an ever-expanding global rail system, meaning freight trains loaded with goods can now arrive after a 12,000km journey all the way from the east coast of the landmass. And, at a cost of $4 billion, China also just completed Africa’s first transnational electric railway, which runs 466 miles from Djibouti to Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia. Chinese companies designed the system, built the line, and supplied the train cars...

WESTINGHOUSE (Full Documentary) | The Powerhouse Struggle of Patents & Business with Nikola Tesla

01:52:20
Subscribe for more great documentary content! http://geni.us/JansonMediaYT George Westinghouse changed the face of the world with his inventions, patents, business sense, and personality. Not a day goes by that we don't use something pioneered by George Westinghouse. He is the forgotten role model that our country needs today to teach future generations of Americans that hard work and kindness pay off. George Westinghouse was one of the most successful men in the world. A respected engineer, inventor and America's greatest industrialist. He was a pioneer of the industrial revolution and played a leading role in turning the United States from a young agrarian society into a modern economic powerhouse. The name "Westinghouse" has been a household name the world over for more than 100 years because of one man, his love of machines, and his desire to make the world a better place. The accomplishments that George Westinghouse had in his lifetime had a major impact on the way we live today. His work in the railroad industry with the Westinghouse air brake, the electrification of the world with Westinghouse alternating current, him being instrumental in developing natural gas as a fuel, and his impact on the shipping industry with the Westinghouse geared marine turbine engine. George Westinghouse was known as a good person. He always had a very good rapport with his workers. There was never a strike at any of the Westinghouse companies all the time he had control of them. And, you know, that was not common back in those days. He certainly was not motivated by greed or money. He really thought that his accomplishments would benefit mankind. And that alone was a driving force for him. This film also engages in the power struggle between Westinghouse and Nikola Tesla.

The energy that the plants originally obtained from the sun is stored in the form of carbon in natural gas. Natural gas is a nonrenewable resource because it cannot be replenished on a human time frame. Natural gas is a hydrocarbon gas mixture consisting primarily of methane, but commonly includes varying amounts of other higher alkanes and even a lesser percentage of carbon dioxide, nitrogen, and hydrogen sulfide. Natural gas is an energy source often used for heating, cooking, and electricity generation. It is also used as fuel for vehicles and as a chemical feedstock in the manufacture of plastics and other commercially important organic chemicals. Natural gas is found in deep underground rock formations or associated with other hydrocarbon reservoirs in coal beds and as methane clathrates. Petroleum is also another resource found in proximity to and with natural gas. Most natural gas was created over time by two mechanisms: biogenic and thermogenic. Biogenic gas is created by methanogenic organisms in marshes, bogs, landfills, and shallow sediments. Deeper in the earth, at greater temperature and pressure, thermogenic gas is created from buried organic material. Before natural gas can be used as a fuel, it must undergo processing to remove impurities, including water, to meet the specifications of marketable natural gas. The by-products of processing include ethane, propane, butanes, pentanes, and higher molecular weight hydrocarbons, hydrogen sulfide (which may be converted into pure sulfur), carbon dioxide, water vapor, and sometimes helium and nitrogen. Natural gas is often informally referred to simply as gas, especially when compared to other energy sources such as oil or coal. However, it is not to be confused with gasoline, especially in North America, where the term gasoline is often shortened in colloquial usage to gas. Natural gas was used by the Chinese in about 500 B.C. They discovered the potential to transport gas seeping from the ground in crude pipelines of bamboo to where it was used to boil sea water. In the 19th century, natural gas was usually obtained as a by-product of producing oil, since the small, light gas carbon chains came out of solution as the extracted fluids underwent pressure reduction from the reservoir to the surface, similar to uncapping a bottle of soda where the carbon dioxide effervesces. Unwanted natural gas was a disposal problem in the active oil fields. If there was not a market for natural gas near the wellhead it was virtually valueless since it had to be piped to the end user. In the 19th century and early 20th century, such unwanted gas was usually burned off at oil fields. Today, unwanted gas (or stranded gas without a market) associated with oil extraction often is returned to the reservoir with 'injection' wells while awaiting a possible future market or to repressurize the formation, which can enhance extraction rates from other wells. In regions with a high natural gas demand (such as the US), pipelines are constructed when it is economically feasible to transport gas from a wellsite to an end consumer. Another possibility is to export natural gas as a liquid. Gas-to-liquids (GTL) is a developing technology that converts stranded natural gas into synthetic gasoline, diesel, or jet fuel through the Fischer-Tropsch process developed in Germany prior to World War II. Such fuel can be transported to users through conventional pipelines and tankers. Proponents claim that GTL burns cleaner than comparable petroleum fuels. Major international oil companies use sophisticated technology to produce GTL. A world-scale (140,000 barrels (22,000 m3) a day) GTL plant in Qatar went into production in 2011. Natural gas can be "associated" (found in oil fields), or "non-associated" (isolated in natural gas fields), and is also found in coal beds (as coalbed methane). It sometimes contains a significant amount of ethane, propane, butane, and pentane—heavier hydrocarbons removed for commercial use prior to the methane being sold as a consumer fuel or chemical plant feedstock. Non-hydrocarbons such as carbon dioxide, nitrogen, helium (rarely), and hydrogen sulfide must also be removed before the natural gas can be transported.

This massive scale of fossil fuel dependence pollutes the earth, and it won’t last forever. On the other hand, we have abundant sun, water and wind, which are all renewable energy sources. So why don’t we exchange our fossil fuel dependence for an existence based only on renewables? Federico Rosei and Renzo Rosei describe the challenges. The Global Warming Response Act

03:26
Legislation sponsored by Valerie Vainieri Huttle, of Englewood, to help curb the effects of global warming by establishing an aggressive statewide greenhouse gas reduction plan over the next half century was signed into law on Friday by Governor Jon S. Corzine. The new environmental protection law -- "The Global Warming Response Act" -- establishes the country's toughest emission standards and places New Jersey at the forefront of efforts to halt global warming. The measure (A-3301) was signed at Giants Stadium, which served as one of eight venues worldwide for Saturday's massive "Live Earth" concert aimed at raising awareness of global warming. To underscore the importance of the new state law, former Vice President Al Gore -- author of the best-selling book, An Inconvenient Truth, which subsequently was turned into an Academy Award-nominated documentary film -- participated in the bill-signing ceremony.

9/11 The Impossible Case of Flight 77?

52:43
An overview of the 9-11 Pentagon attack as depicted in the very interesting series of videos on youtube by Citizen Investigation Team entitled "Deconstructing the Pentagon Attack" https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLE54A5805EEB81C20 This video contains edited segments with portions from videos by Pilots For 9/11 Truth. ( www.pilotsfor911truth.org ) All eyewitnesses (longtime area employees and police officers) interviewed by Citizen Investigation Team (CIT) place the actual track of the aircraft approaching the Pentagon in conflict with the 9-11 Commission's description, and in conflict with the damage to the light poles and the angle of penetration into the Pentagon building. All CIT interviewed eyewitness testify they saw the aircraft approach the Pentagon north of the CITGO gas station which agrees with the NTSB supplied Black Box flight data recorder animation and the later FAA/NORAD animation. However, an aircraft approaching the Pentagon on the track shown by the Black Box data and the eyewitness accounts would have been at the wrong angle to have penetrated the Pentagon to cause the damage. Something other than the aircraft seen flying toward the Pentagon on 9-11 caused the damage to the Pentagon. The theory put forward is that that aircraft seen approaching the Pentagon abruptly pulled up to fly away as the explosion occurred. Because the Pentagon is only about one mile from Reagan National Airport, low flying aircraft and abruptly climbing aircraft are a common sight. [9/11 - Did Flight 77 Really Crash into The Pentagon? - 3 Conflicting "Official" Animations - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3JK1zTuBTZI ] The suspected pilot, Hani Hanjour, was considered by flight instructors to not be qualified to pilot a single-engine Cessna. Also interesting is that the flight data recorder information showed that the cabin door was not opened in flight, so how did the terrorists gain access to the cockpit? Of course, the Flight Data Recorder info did not necessarily have to be from a "crashed" aircraft - but it does depict Flight 77's entire flight from taxi and takeoff to approximately 2 seconds from the Pentagon where it suddenly ceases recording (point of pull-up and overfly?) For what possible reason would the Government falsify the Flight Data Recorder information released to the public? And, the taxi-cab that had its windshield penetrated by light pole No.1, 40 feet long and 285 pounds, did not have even a scratch on its hood from the event. The only “conspiracy” theory that seems full of improbabilities/impossibilities and violates the laws of Physics is the one presented where 19 Muslim hijackers (9 of whom were found to be still alive) successfully rendered impotent the combined air defense capability of America in the most heavily protected airspace in the nation – around the White House and Pentagon. Did three Muslim hijacker pilots – who were not considered competent to pilot small private aircraft, and who had no flight time in the immensely heavier and immensely more complicated Boeing 757 and 767 jetliners fly those same jetliners with such military precision through high speed, high banking turns that each hit his target perfectly on his first try? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3JK1zTuBTZI - "9/11 - Did Flight 77 Really Crash into The Pentagon? - 3 Conflicting Official Animations" Bob Pugh, the videographer who arrived very shortly after the attack commented that the hole made in the Pentagon was “16 feet diameter, 20 feet tops...but I can't believe the thing [the hole] is more than a garage door.” It's certainly perplexing, then, how a Boeing 757 could fit - engines and all - through that hole. Professional eyewitnesses - police officers, security guards, etc. - refute the government's official version of the attack on the Pentagon on 9/11. Evidence shows that Flight 77 was not scheduled to fly on September 11, 2001: Find American Airlines Flight 77 on the Bureau of Transportation Statistics list for September 11, 2001... Made In Kentucky

55:34
Few people realize how many major manufacturers have operations in Kentucky, including Toyota, Corvette, Ford, Corning, North American Stainless, and Century Aluminum, to name just a few. Because of its huge industrial base, Kentucky has one of the most energy-intensive economies in the United States, an economy that has largely been sustained by the use of coal-fired electricity generation. As concerns about climate change increase and the demand for coal is replaced by a demand for natural gas, Kentucky finds itself in a uniquely challenging position. "Made In Kentucky" discusses the difficulties that Kentucky faces and explores some of the solutions that might lead to a stronger Kentucky economy while still protecting the environment. Featuring interviews with: Nathaniel Adams (North American Stainless), Dave Adkisson (Kentucky Chamber of Commerce), Bill Bissett (Kentucky Coal Association), Brenda Brickhouse (Tennessee Valley Authority), Marilyn Brown (Georgia Institute of Technology), Tony Campbell (East Kentucky Power Cooperative), Tom FitzGerald (Kentucky Resources Council), Jim Gardner (Kentucky Public Service Commission), Greg Higdon (Kentucky Association of Manufacturers), Justin Maxson (Mary Reynolds Babcock Foundation), Andrew McNeill (Kentucky Oil and Gas Association), Carey Smith (Big Ass Solutions), Rebecca Taylor (National Center for Manufacturing Sciences), Paul Thompson (LG&E and KU)

Breaking news, December 26, 2017

On Monday night, an explosion occurred at the Fireworks Festival in Remedios, Cuba. 39 people are injured with 27of them having serious injuries and burns. The condition of eight people is assessed as critical. Among the victims are six children aged from 11 to 15. The explosion occurred after a spark got into the sacks of pyrotechnics. During the past day the AFU units violated the New Year truce five times in the DPR. The populated areas of the Donetsk direction and the south of the Republic got under the fire of Ukrainian troops. In total, 18 pieces of ammunition were fired from the positions of the Ukrainian army. Let’s recall that last night the units of the AFU fired mortar shells from the village of Sosnovskoye, Novoazovsky district in the south of the DPR. In addition, in the village of Krutaya Balka near Yasinovataya fire was delivered by means of small arms. During the past day, the AFU shelled the positions of the People's Militia of the LPR twice. Villages of the Kalinovo urban settlement and the village of Logvinovo were shelled with grenade launchers and small arms. The Israeli authorities are planning to build new settlements in the illegally occupied Palestinian territories of East Jerusalem and the West Bank. The government ordered that several large settlements be included in the administrative boundaries of the city of Jerusalem. This will allow residents of the settlements to vote in local elections. Thus, Israel continues to insist that Jerusalem is an indivisible city, is the capital of the Jewish state. The Day of military air defense is celebrated in Russia today. The formation of this type of troops began as early as the beginning of the 20th century. 102 years ago, Nicholas II signed a decree on the formation of individual four-gun light batteries for firing at air targets. Now the air defense is highly mobile, highly effective troops capable of solving electronic, fire and other tasks to cover troops and infrastructure elements. "Naftogaz of Ukraine" should pay Gazprom $ 1.8 million for a three-day delay in payments collected by the arbitration court of Stockholm. The debt increases by $ 600 thousand daily, said the deputy chairman of the board of the Russian company Alexander Medvedev. This amount is the interest rate approved by the arbitration in the fuel supply case, which was opened as early as 2014. Ukraine, is experiencing financial difficulties, and in Kiev will do everything to postpone this payment. ___________________________________________________ Агентство ANNA-News это волонтерский проект. Outward Bound: Colonizing Neptune

A look at Neptune, a potential gateway to the stars... Visit our sponsor, Brilliant: https://brilliant.org/IsaacArthur/ The Icy Giants, Neptune and Uranus, are often overlooked for as candidates for colonizing our solar system. Even when noted, the focus tends to be on their larger moons like Triton. Today we will challenge that notion by looking at way we might place a colony on the planet itself, and how Orbital Rings and Chandelier Cities might let us colonize any gas giant. We will also look at how helium-3, a core ingredient of aneutronic fusion abundant on Neptune, might serve as the fuel of future starships, and the physics behind some other starship drives future science might give us access to, such as laser propulsion. Historical Review of Incineration circa 1930 Nye Odorless Crematory Co.

The soundtrack was also processed with volume normalization, noise reduction, clipping reduction, and/or equalization (the resulting sound, though not perfect, is far less noisy than the original). http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Incineration Incineration is a waste treatment process that involves the combustion of organic substances contained in waste materials. Incineration and other high-temperature waste treatment systems are described as "thermal treatment". Incineration of waste materials converts the waste into ash, flue gas, and heat. The ash is mostly formed by the inorganic constituents of the waste, and may take the form of solid lumps or particulates carried by the flue gas. The flue gases must be cleaned of gaseous and particulate pollutants before they are dispersed into the atmosphere. In some cases, the heat generated by incineration can be used to generate electric power. Incineration with energy recovery is one of several waste-to-energy (WtE) technologies such as gasification, pyrolysis and anaerobic digestion. While incineration and gasification technologies are similar in principle, the energy product from incineration is high-temperature heat whereas combustible gas is often the main energy product from gasification. Incineration and gasification may also be implemented without energy and materials recovery. In several countries, there are still concerns from experts and local communities about the environmental impact of incinerators (see arguments against incineration). In some countries, incinerators built just a few decades ago often did not include a materials separation to remove hazardous, bulky or recyclable materials before combustion. These facilities tended to risk the health of the plant workers and the local environment due to inadequate levels of gas cleaning and combustion process control. Most of these facilities did not generate electricity. Incinerators reduce the solid mass of the original waste by 80–85% and the volume (already compressed somewhat in garbage trucks) by 95–96%, depending on composition and degree of recovery of materials such as metals from the ash for recycling. This means that while incineration does not completely replace landfilling, it significantly reduces the necessary volume for disposal. Garbage trucks often reduce the volume of waste in a built-in compressor before delivery to the incinerator. Alternatively, at landfills, the volume of the uncompressed garbage can be reduced by approximately 70% by using a stationary steel compressor, albeit with a significant energy cost. In many countries, simpler waste compaction is a common practice for compaction at landfills. Incineration has particularly strong benefits for the treatment of certain waste types in niche areas such as clinical wastes and certain hazardous wastes where pathogens and toxins can be destroyed by high temperatures. Examples include chemical multi-product plants with diverse toxic or very toxic wastewater streams, which cannot be routed to a conventional wastewater treatment plant. Waste combustion is particularly popular in countries such as Japan where land is a scarce resource. Denmark and Sweden have been leaders in using the energy generated from incineration for more than a century, in localised combined heat and power facilities supporting district heating schemes. In 2005, waste incineration produced 4.8% of the electricity consumption and 13.7% of the total domestic heat consumption in Denmark. A number of other European countries rely heavily on incineration for handling municipal waste, in particular Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Germany and France... The first UK incinerators for waste disposal were built in Nottingham by Manlove, Alliott & Co. Ltd. in 1874 to a design patented by Albert Fryer. They were originally known as destructors. The first US incinerator was built in 1885 on Governors Island in New York, NY. The first facility in the Czech Republic was built in 1905 in Brno...

Baltimore 1972

03:30
The footage contains clips of New York and New Jersey toward the end. The video starts showing genuine urban scenes of Baltimore, then more outskirts scenes. When you see industrial areas in the 2:40's, it probably switches to New Jersey. Then it switches to a hilly tunnel approach, which is the Lincoln Tunnel from a stretch of roadway called the "Helix" on the NJ side. Afterwards, it shows scenes of midtown Manhattan, likely 7th or 8th Avenues. You can tell it's NYC from the taxis, buses, and the traffic light/street lamp poles. Donald Trump Mexico Jobs - Carrier Air Conditioners -1400 American Jobs loss - (Original) @Mr_Pinko

02:09
Carrier is a brand of United Technologies Corporation Building & Industrial Systems, based in Farmington, Connecticut. Carrier was founded in 1915 as an independent, American company, manufacturing and distributing heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) systems, as well as commercial refrigeration and food service equipment. About 2012, it was a $12.5 billion company with over 43,000 employees serving customers in 170 countries on six continents.[1][2] Carrier was acquired by United Technologies in 1979. In 2016, Carrier Corporation announced it would be laying off American workers, in favour of lower-paid Mexicans in Mexico. Willis Carrier is credited with inventing modern air conditioning in 1902. In 1915 Carrier, along with six other engineers, pooled together $32,600 to form the Carrier Engineering Corporation.[5] In 1920 they purchased their first plant in Newark, New Jersey. The corporation bearing his name succeeded in marketing its air conditioner to the residential market in the 1950s, which led to formerly sparsely populated areas such as the American Southwest becoming home to sprawling suburbs. Carrier is the largest air conditioning producer in the world.[citation needed] It has U.S. manufacturing facilities in Indianapolis, Indiana for residential and commercial furnaces and air handlers, Collierville, Tennessee for residential condensing units and heat pumps, Tyler, Texas for residential package units and commercial condensing and package units, Mexico for evaporator coils, and Charlotte, North Carolina for accessories and chillers. In 1955 Carrier merged with Affiliated Gas Equipment, Inc., which owned the Bryant Heater Co., Day & Night Water Heater Co., and Payne Furnace & Supply Co.[6] A Carrier commercial service van in Montreal, Canada in August 2008. Carrier Corporation was acquired by United Technologies Corporation (UTC) in July 1979.[7] Prior to the acquisition by UTC, Carrier Corporation was known as the Carrier Air Conditioning Company. International Comfort Products (ICP), headquartered in Lewisburg, Tennessee, was acquired by Carrier in 1999. In the 1990s Carrier stopped using the "Day & Night" brand (which was the "D" in the BDP division, or Bryant-Day & Night-Payne) but it was revived in 2006 by ICP. Carrier also owns Transicold ("reefer" transport refrigeration). In early 2008, Carrier acquired Environmental Market Solutions, Inc. (EMSI), an environmental and green building consulting company based in the United States. The company has received Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification from the US Green Building Council for its factories in Charlotte NC and Huntington IN (2009), Shanghai, China (2010), and Monterrey, Mexico (2011).[8] In September 2013, Carrier, Otis, and United Technologies Fire and Security were combined into one subsidiary. In January 2016, Carrier announced layoffs at its division in DeWitt, New York.[9] In February 2016, Carrier announced it would be closing its Indianapolis manufacturing plant and relocating production to Monterrey, Mexico. HVAC Systems and Services North America president Chris Nelson stated "This move is intended to address the challenges we continue to face in a rapidly changing HVAC industry, with the continued migration of the HVAC industry to Mexico, including our suppliers and competitors, and ongoing cost and pricing pressures driven, in part, by new regulatory requirements, Relocating our operations to a region where we have existing infrastructure and a strong supplier base will allow us to operate more cost effectively so that we can continue to produce high-quality HVAC products that are competitively positioned while continuing to meet customer needs."[10][11] There has been no elaboration or explanation as to what the "regulatory requirements" are that prompted the move and layoff. In fact, U.S. Senator Joe Donnelly noted that he had personally questioned Carrier chief Chris Nelson as to what, if any, regulatory issues had caused the move. Nelson was unable to cite any such regulations. Donnelly noted that the most parsiminous explanation was due to the corporation wanting to sell products to Americans, but not pay Americans fair American market rates.[4] Syracuse, New York campus Willis Carrier moved his facilities from New Jersey to Syracuse, New York in the 1930s. During the late 20th century, when it was acquired by UTC, it was Central New York State's largest manufacturer. Due to increasing labor and union costs in the Central New York area, Carrier has substantially downsized its presence in Syracuse, with manufacturing work being moved to a variety of domestic and international locations. Meanwhile, managerial employees were relocated closer to UTC's Connecticut corporate headquarters which represented a challenge to the local economy. Over the course of 2011 the majority of the
