A New England Farmhouse Explodes With Color

JK VB New England Farmhouse Update
ON TREND: From Farmhouse to My House It really was our dream house when we were in the throes of construction for months last year. It couldn’t get built fast enough!! Now that we’re in, it very much feels like home, and I thought you’d like a peek at how it looks today. Aspects that I especially appreciate now include the big windows that make it light and airy and the open floor plan. I’m really looking forward to warm weather, throwing open the doors to the patio, and getting into the garden

D202 plan - American Farmhouse Revisited
House plan #D202 Area: 3291 Square feet 4 Bedrooms, 3 Bath For more information go to: http://www.madsondesign.com/project_gallery/houseplan_d202.html Plan description: Two old farmhouses stand for a century side by side, simple, Spartan structures against a backdrop of the rural American landscape. A visionary new owner sees the old homes’ potential: A new glass and exposed timber breezeway is added to unify the two buildings. Further integrating the two is a new open kitchen and dining room, infusing new life and natural light into old spaces. That was the concept—a faux history—going into this new home’s design. It evolved from observing, again and again, how old habitations have been adapted over a century or more, lending to these spaces a settled, comfortable quality. Conversely, these old homes were imbued with an exciting dynamic, where one could both see and sense an evolving culture, the past integral in the present: These are spaces dynamically imbued with a sense of change, yet all the more stable and rooted because of it. This is the intrigue and quality I aspired to capture in this new home, with an architectural model that has proven to be flexible and enduring over the centuries. The American farmhouse continues to evolve in our valuation: Once a nostalgic throwback, now it has become a new symbol of the minimalist, just-as-much-as-we-need-and-no-more aesthetic. Old utility becomes the new Modern. So clean lines, open spaces, and ease of flow in this old/new home: the meditative simplicity of the modern blends integrally with the comfort of old traditions. Features: -- Folk Victorian farmhouse and sleek modern design juxtaposed and fused integrally, inside and out -- Windowed two-story “breezeway” is a contemporary bridge (and entry) between two “old” farmhouses -- A quantity of windows throughout, for light and airy openness in both the traditional and contemporary spaces -- Vaulted dining room opens to exterior on two sides; bifold door systems open up both walls -- Easy access to attic play space (or storage) from second floor windowed breezeway -- Flexible, open layout within indoor/outdoor flow

Oxleaze Farm House, Woolstone, South Oxfordshire
IDYLLIC FARMHOUSE WITH VIEWS TO DIE FOR - c0.7 ACRE - a dream house in a dream setting. WOOLSTONE Wantage c8.3 miles Faringdon c6.3 miles St Hugh's school c9.2 miles Pinewood school c6.5 miles Didcot Rail c17.4 miles Oxleaze Farmhouse is a joy to behold, a 19th Century English farm house (not listed) set in glorious countryside with a breathtaking view over the beautiful south facing garden to the Downs and White Horse Hill - it is the stuff of dreams. The garden amounts to approximately 0.7 of an acre with a small paddock, a swimming pool, a very large double garage, tractor shed and stable. Almost all of the garden is in front of, to the south of the house with views over open countryside from pretty well anywhere you choose to sit or stand. There is a kitchen garden to the west of the house and then the terrace where it must be wonderful to sit with a refreshing glass of something at the end of a summers day and relax as you watch the sun illuminate White Horse Hill as the perfect backdrop to the heavenly garden. The current owners have made considerable investment in the fabric of the property, renewing the roof and replacing the kitchen to mention just two of the larger items. Woolstone is not on mains drainage or mains gas so the central heating is oil fired and drainage is to a septic tank system. The house is handsome in every regard with central front door to a hall with a flag stone floor, three good reception rooms, wonderfully light family kitchen, large utility/laundry area and then on the first floor there are four bedrooms and two bathrooms although as you will see on the floor plan, the bedroom in the newer section on the east side is approached via one of the original bedrooms at present. 30 years ago the property was divided so that the older, original farmhouse, now referred to as Oxleaze Cottage, was sold as a separate dwelling leaving this property, Oxleaze Farmhouse also as a separate dwelling. These two properties are "attached" back to back so as you approach the farmhouse from the south you will have no sight of Oxleaze Cottage and it is unlikely that you would be aware of the presence of the cottage even when you are in the farm house. Farmhouse Series, Catskill Farms (Catskills Real Estate)
Our Ulster County real estate and Sullivan County real estate New Farmhouse Series provides our clients with a romantic substitute for that charm-laden old falling down money pit fixer upper home. Catskill Farms Owner Chuck dissects our new Catskill homes from a design and build vantage. Catskill Farms designs, builds and sells homes and Real estate in Sullivan County, real estate in Ulster County and real estate in Dutchess County. The homes of Catskill Farms tend work, look great, are fully warrantied and have a timeless design. Catskills real estate available for purchase has been undoubtedly improved by the 100 homes this premier Catskills Builder has dreamed up and built since 2001. Catskills realtors love Catskill Farms homes for sale in the Catskills since their buyers tend to be inspired by them after the long slog at looking at homes that don’t meet the buyers’ criteria. When people from the city think of upstate homes, many of them think real estate near Woodstock. With one of the most famous town brands around, searching for homes for sale in Woodstock NY is a perfectly logical place to start a Catskills real estate search. While many families find homes in Woodstock have a lot to offer, they soon find the Catskills are much bigger and much more diverse than that culturally important locale. Wasting weekends looking at uninspiring Catskills architecture can leave a buyer looking for the nearest bridge to jump from. Catskill Farms checks all the Catskill real estate boxes.

Interior Design: How To Mix Traditional And Modern Decor
Designer Allison Willson of Sarah Richardson Design discusses how she renovated her home for her young family. See how she preserves the 1906 Edwardian semi’s charm with vintage pieces and modern updates for the perfect mix between old and new. The home is largely traditional, but playful, contemporary accents liven up the rooms. A statement rug in the living room adds color to the neutral palette, while animal prints offer an unexpected dose of fun in the den. The kitchen features huge brass lights and marble subway tile, and the bathrooms follow suit with a similarly industrial aeshtetic. The most predominent color in the home is soothing grey, and when paired with the plush, comfortable furniture, it creates a space both kids and adults can enjoy.

Modern cabin hangs like a treehouse over Acadian New England
Maricela Salas and Mary McGoff admit they were “naive” about buying raw land before making their purchase of a hillside lot in the Berkshires. It turned out to be too steep and rocky for a traditional foundation. To avoid “blasting” and ruining their beloved refuge, their contractor Arthur Jackson (of The Small Building Company) created piers to perch their cabin like a “treehouse” above the rocky ledge. To select the ideal siting and orientation for their bucolic home Salas and McGoff camped on the land for a few years in an Airstream trailer. “It also made us realize the Airstream was a 23-foot beautiful thing that we love and miss dearly,” explains Salas. “We realized we don’t need a big house, or anything grand and just simple. I’m talking tiny, tiny house first and then realized it doesn’t make sense to build an expensive tiny, tiny house when you can just wait and build this.” They expanded their dream to an 850-square-foot “modern cabin” (they don’t consider it a “house”), but they retained the open feel of the Airstream. Designed by New York architect RD Gentzler, the space which is technically all one room (though there are pocket doors to shut off the bathroom and bedroom when necessary) resembles a Manhattan loft. The focus of the cabin is the outdoors and the huge bank of windows along the south side (with a roof canopy to limit summer solar gain) frames their private forest. Zen forest house: 11K, handcrafted, small home in Oregon
Brian Schulz wanted to see "how small of a house I could make feel big". Inspired by the traditional Japanese minka homes that rely on local materials and steeply sloped roofs to create affordable, open structures, Schulz created a home using materials salvaged or sourced from within 10 miles of his home. The result is a 14-by-16-foot home iin tune with its surroundings that cost only 11,000 dollars - mostly for concrete, shakes and insulation-, along with about a year and half of Schulz's spare time. Much of the wood Schulz collected from the bay while kayaking (he teaches traditional wood kayak-building for a living) and then he milled it himself on-site. Corner posts were blowdown trees from a friend's forest. Kitchen counters were milled from a fallen tree he'd held onto for 8 years. Stair railing is alder poles cut from beside the house. The 3 tables in the home were cut from cedar found on the beach and constructed in 2 hours. He laid flooring using low-grade reject fir, created trim using miscellaneous scrapwood and bought all the home's windows for $40 from the local dump (the french doors came from craigslist). Wonderful Colonial House (Home Exterior)
What Is a Colonial House? The Colonial home is one of the most popular styles of home in the United States, according to "Better Homes and Gardens." The Colonial style evolved from European influences, which started in the 1600s. Many colonists emigrated from Europe and brought those influences with them. Over time the Colonial style became distinct, recognizable for its use of geometry, and different regions of the United States added their own tweaks to provide relief from the climate. History Colonial houses developed out of the US Colonial period in the 1700s. Colonists settled primarily along the Eastern Seaboard and built homes that became the Colonial style. They started as two-story homes that feature one room on each floor and eventually grew into the stately, four-over-four, two-story homes most associated with the Colonial style. Four-over-four alludes to the style of four rooms on each floor of the home. Characteristics Regardless of the size of the home, Colonial-style homes share several characteristics, according to Architecture for Kids. First, the homes are symmetrical, or square, and feature an entry door that can be found in the middle of the front of the home. The style also features two windows on either side of the entry door, with five windows on the second floor, with one directly above the entry door. Other characteristics include paired chimneys, a medium pitched roof to provide drainage in rainy weather and a stairway that is directly behind the entry door and leads to a hallway that bisects the middle of the second floor. Influences The Colonial style can trace its influences to England, from which most of the US Colonists emigrated. When London burned in 1666, several architects helped influence the city’s reconstruction. Andrea Palladio, an Italian architect popular during the Renaissance, influenced British architects like Christopher Wren, James Gibbs and Robert Adam, who helped rebuild London in the 1680s. Their architecture was based partly on Roman and Greek ruins, according to Antique Home. Those influences can be seen in the geometric proportion of Colonial homes and certain accents, such as Greek-style columns on the front. With the work of these architects popular in the 1700s, their work filtered to the Colonies and influenced the work of home builders in what became the United States. Regions Colonial architecture flourished in two main US regions: New England and in the Southern US. They are designated as New England Colonial and Southern Colonial. As the architecture evolved, the two styles took on distinct differences. In the South, ceilings were built higher in order to provide ventilation during the summer months. In New England, the majority of colonial homes were built with wood siding, as the material was easy to come by. Colonial homes in Virginia, which is considered part of the New England family, were built primarily of brick because clay was plentiful. The style can be found as far west as Ohio and Illinois. Additions As Colonial architecture evolved in the United States, architects and homeowners sought to put their own stamp on the style. These accessories include such items as brass door knockers, cut-glass doorknobs and gilt indoor mirrors. The use of shutters on the front windows also evolved out of the Colonial style. Other Colonial Styles Several other types of Colonial homes have evolved from the original style. The French adopted the style as they built homes in what became Louisiana. These homes have steep roofs, elevated brick foundations and wide porches. Spanish Colonial homes evolved during the time of the Spanish Empire in Florida and the US Southwest. These homes were differentiated by their materials, which were usually adobe and stone to help keep homes cool. sources http://homeguides.sfgate.com/colonial-house-6909.html http://photos.hgtv.com/rooms/viewer/outdoor-space/colonial

Virgil unbound: Italian Alps ruin becomes dream budget home
When his wife inherited a ruined stable in Italy’s Orobic Alps, architect Alfredo Vanotti reinvisioned the space as a family home, reflecting local craftsmanship and his love of modern design. To daylight the home, Vanotti created a long skylight and four large windows facing the Valtellina Valley below. To create exterior walls that resembled the “dry stone” technique of the the region’s traditional homes, he used local stone and a minimal amount of cement to hold it together. For the interior, Vanotti used reinforced concrete, along with natural larch and iron to give the home a more modern feel. “Concrete is misused,” he explains. “It shouldn’t be perfect. The advantage of concrete: it shouldn’t be smooth, beautiful, precise.” The fireplace, sink, bidet, shower and toilet are all custom-designed from unfinished concrete. To showcase the material’s imperfections, Vanotti chose to leave the material untreated and uncovered. “Concrete is a refined material. You don’t have to hide it.” With just a “small budget”, and relying on help from his father, Vanotti transformed the ruin into a weekend home for his family over the course of five years. He designed the home from the ground up, including the kitchen sink. Everything was designed by the architect, including the concrete sink/bidet/toilet and fireplace. Nearly every detail was personalized, like the door/cupboard handles made from strips of leather.
