CHICAGO NAVY PIER TOUR | Nepali BrewBoy Adventures
Navy Pier, Chicago, IL Of the many and varied attractions in Chicago, its most-visited is still the Navy Pier. Originally Municipal Pier #2, it was designed and built to serve as a cargo facility, passenger dock, and public gathering place. Jutting out onto Lake Michigan, the pier provided a cooler, breezier place than the city for crowds to attend entertainments during the stuffy summers, and had its own tram service out to the edge for those who didn’t wish to walk. When it opened to the public in 1916, it was the largest pier in the world. During the 1910s, automobiles and trucks were beginning to take over some of the weight of transportation from ships, which delivered both freight and passengers to Chicago’s port. Thus its primary function became as an entertainment site, and steamboat traffic decreased. The pier was completed just in time for use in WWI, when military personnel and Red Cross workers took up residence during 1917-1918. After the war, the roaring twenties ushered in a streetcar line, theatre, auditorium, dance hall, radio station, dining pavilions, and the ‘Pageant of Progress’ in 1922. In 1927, in honor of WWI veterans who had served there, it officially became Navy Pier. The pier saw many other notable moments in history, including the 1933 World’s Fair Century of Progress Exposition, Great Depression New Deal agencies, and conversion to a naval training center for the U.S. military during WWII. Following WWII, it became a college campus primarily serving returning veterans, until the U.S. Bicentennial in 1976 returned it to public use. Music and art festivals shared the pier with exhibition halls, and in 1989, a major overhaul brought new life to the pier. Currently, the pier is home to a variety of entertainments and attractions, including its own Ferris wheel, IMAX theatre, concert stage, ballroom, public art installations, miniature golf course, funhouse maze, beer garden, and Pier Park, a small amusement park set on the upper deck beside the Crystal Gardens. Cultural attractions include the Chicago Shakespeare Theatre, Chicago Children’s Museum, and Smith Museum of Stained Glass Windows. Sightseeing, architecture, and dinner cruises launch from the pier, and during the summer, there are even fireworks. There is, in short, something for everyone. Seasonal festivals range from Tall Ships Chicago, the Inuit Show of Folk & Outsider Art, and Chicago Toy & Game Fair, to the Chicago Flower & Garden Show, Winter WonderFest, and Snow Days Chicago. I was in town for the latter two, which were more than enough to keep me busy during my visit. Winter WonderFest is an indoor winter festival, where you can ice skate, toboggan, ride a holiday train or carousel, climb a snowy mountain wall, or stand inside a snow globe…all in the warm comfort of the indoors. Snow Days Chicago requires you to get a little chillier, but you can snowboard, visit with penguins from nearby Shedd Aquarium, or attend the most spectacular attraction, the snow sculpting competition. Chicago is fun to visit anytime, but there’s something especially enchanting about Navy Pier in December. There are holiday lights everywhere, and the pier is jam-packed with restaurants and shops. It’s a perfect place to spend a day relaxing and enjoying the season. Don’t worry too much about making a plan—you’ll find plenty to see and do just wandering around the pier. I will make a plug for the stained glass museum, which was a strange, wonderful glimpse into the old mansions of Chicago, through the art of Louis Comfort Tiffany and other masters. Chicago Day 2 | Willis Tower, United Center Atrium, River Cruise, Navy Pier | Travelvlog and tips
Second day at Chicago! (1st full day) Got to Willis Tower Sky Deck before it opened at 9AM - did not need fast pass, the wait was 15 minutes the most - you have to wait in line to enter the glass box! So definitely plan ahead and you probably need to wait in multiple lines ( = another reason to be super early) - we were done by 10AM United Center - Michael Jordan Statue is moved to the Atrium (inside the united center)! The atrium is open from 10AM to 6PM - when we got there around 10:30 AM there was NO ONE. you don't have to pay, just go in there and have a moment with MJ ;) - Team store is also open -- photobooth is super fun!! you can send the pictures/videos to yourself Portillo's Hot Dog - famous chicago food. Locals don't recommend their hot dogs but other stuff on the menu. Definitely popular, but i'd say the food isn't that great (i don't like meat in general so...) River Cruise (via first lady Chicago Architecture Foundation) - $47 single ticket - departs every half an hour - popular time slots get filled up quickly, so RSVP - if you are into architecture, definitely take the 90 min cruise!! It's very informative...and they also sell alcohol... also, don't forget to take picture of the magnificient mile, wrigley building, and the beautiful skyscrappers! Navy Pier - cannot really compare to santa monica pier, of course - all the food and shops are in the basement floor, on the pier, but many under construction. - there's also the Children's Museum, so if you want to avoid children everywhere...don't come! Not really worth it.

Driving Downtown - The Navy Pier - Chicago Illinois
Cost: $14 for parking. Navy Pier is a 3,300-foot-long (1,010 m) pier on the Chicago shoreline of Lake Michigan. It is located in the Streeterville neighborhood of the Near North Side community area. The pier was built in 1916 at a cost of $4.5 million. It was a part of the Plan of Chicago developed by architect and city planner Daniel Burnham and his associates. As Municipal Pier #2 (Municipal Pier #1 was never built), Navy Pier was planned and built to serve as a mixed-purpose piece of public infrastructure. Its primary purpose was as a cargo facility for lake freighters, and warehouses were built up and down the Pier. However, the Pier was also designed to provide docking space for passenger excursion steamers, and in the pre–air conditioning era parts of the Pier, especially its outermost tip, were designed to serve as cool places for public gathering and entertainment. The Pier even had its own tram. Today, the pier is one of the most visited attractions in the entire Midwestern United States and is Chicago's number one tourist attraction.[2] Fourth use: public gathering place Centerpiece attractions include a Ferris wheel,[8] an IMAX theater, the Chicago Shakespeare Theater, Amazing Chicago's Funhouse Maze, the Chicago Children's Museum, the Smith Museum of Stained Glass Windows, and at the entrance to Navy Pier is a statue of Oak Park comedian Bob Newhart, sponsored by the TV Land network.[9] The Pier now features a large front lawn showcasing numerous larger-than-life public art sculptures and an interactive animated fountain created by WET (of Fountains of Bellagio fame). The Pier continues to be used as an embarkation point for tour and excursion boats and is a popular place to watch lakefront events, including the annual Air and Water airshow and the parade of lighted and decorated boats during Chicago's Venetian Night festival. The Pier and its grounds encompass more than 50 acres (200,000 m2) of parks, gardens, shops, restaurants and other shore entertainment. Navy Pier contains 170,000 total square feet of exhibition space, 50,000 square feet (5,000 m2) of reception space and 48,000 square feet (4,500 m2) of meeting room space. Attractions Navy Pier attractions include sightseeing tours from companies such as Seadog Ventures, Shoreline Sightseeing cruises and Water Taxi service, and the Tall Ship Windy. There are also dinner cruises by Entertainment Cruises, on their ships the Spirit of Chicago, The Odyssey II, and the Mystic Blue. The Pier has fireworks on Wednesday and Saturday nights during the summer and Saturday nights during the fall.[9] The popular Strictly Sail boat show and Chicago Flower and Garden Show are held at the Pier, as are many other fairs and expositions throughout the year. There are also seasonal festivals for Halloween and Christmas. The Chicago Children's Museum is a part of Navy Pier, with many different exhibits and activities for both children and adults to enjoy while visiting the museum.[9][10] The Pier also has an IMAX theater and the Smith Museum of Stained Glass Windows, many of which were salvaged from Chicago mansions. An anchor from the naval vessel USS Chicago (CA-136/CG-11) is on display at the far end of the Pier[11] Pier Park Pier Park is a landscaped area outdoors on the upper deck, between the Crystal Gardens and the Pepsi Skyline Stage.[8] Attractions include the 150-foot (45.7 m) tall Navy Pier Ferris Wheel, which was manufactured by Vekoma[12] and opened on July 1, 1995.[13] It operates year-round, weather permitting, and has 40 gondolas, each seating up to 6 passengers. Its 40 spokes, spanning a diameter of 140 feet (42.7 m), are illuminated in the evenings.[8] The world record for the longest Ferris wheel ride was set by Clinton Shepherd, the park operations manager, who spent 48 hours, 8 minutes and 25 seconds riding the Pier's wheel over the weekend of May 18–19, 2013.[14] Other rides include a musical carousel, the Light Tower Ride, and Wave Swinger, an old-fashioned swinging thrill ride almost 40 feet (12 m) high.[8] Other Pier Park amusements include an 18-hole miniature golf course, and token-operated remote-control boats.[8] http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Navy_Pier http://navypier.com/ http://www.tripadvisor.com/Attraction_Review-g35805-d142948-Reviews-Navy_Pier-Chicago_Illinois.html

EXPO Chicago Interior Environment
Enhancing the art-viewing experience, Studio Gang's design for EXPO Chicago's interior environment brings clarity, efficiency, comfort, and energy to the annual art fair, held in Festival Hall at Navy Pier. The floor plan, patterned after the city's gridded streets and lined with exhibition spaces, enables visitors to view every gallery in sequence without losing their way. A diagonal "avenue" gives visitors the option to see selected work and installations along a single path. Plazas and amenities, including a chef's kitchen, dining space, and lounges, punctuate the street grid, offering a range of opportunities to relax, eat, or drink without needing to leave the show. Mirrored Mylar cones suspended above the galleries reflect the art and activity below while also creating individual, enclosed atmospheres where patrons can rest and socialize. These colossal installations also serve to orient visitors and add optical flair to the space.

Streets of Chicago
The City of Chicago is the third-most populous city in the United States and the most populous city in both the state of Illinois and the Midwestern United States. In terms of wealth and economy, Chicago is considered one of the most important business centers in the world. Chicago was incorporated as a city in 1837, near a portage between the Great Lakes and the Mississippi River watershed, and grew rapidly in the mid-nineteenth century. After the Great Chicago Fire of 1871, which razed several square miles and left more than 100,000 homeless, the city made a concerted effort to rebuild on the damage. The construction boom accelerated population growth throughout the following decades, leading Chicago to become among the five largest cities in the world by 1900. During this period Chicago is noted for its contribution to urban planning and zoning standards, new constructions styles (including the Chicago School of architecture), the embracement of the City Beautiful Movement, and the eventual creation of the steel-framed skyscraper. Positioned along Lake Michigan, the city is an international hub for finance, commerce, industry, technology, telecommunications, and transportation: O'Hare International Airport is the second-busiest airport in the world when measured by aircraft traffic; the region also has the largest number of U.S. highways and rail road freight. Landmarks in the city include Millennium Park, Navy Pier, the Magnificent Mile, Art Institute of Chicago, Museum Campus, the Willis (Sears) Tower, Museum of Science and Industry, and Lincoln Park Zoo. Chicago's culture includes the visual arts, novels, film, theater, especially improvisational comedy, and music, particularly jazz, blues, soul, hip hop, gospel and house music. There are many colleges and universities in the Chicago area; among these, Northwestern University, University of Chicago, and the University of Illinois at Chicago are classified as "highest research" doctoral universities. Additionally, Chicago has professional sports teams in each of the major professional leagues. The city has many nicknames, the best-known being the Windy City.

Riding Chicago's Shoreline Water Taxi: Navy Pier to Union Station, July 4th, 2011
A ride in real-time from Navy Pier's Ogden Slip to Union Station at the Adams Street bridge, on Shoreline Water Taxi's vessel, the "Lickety Split". Shoreline competes with Chicago Water Taxi Co. in operating water taxis up and down the Chicago River. While Chicago Water Taxi is primarily a commuter operation to shuttle passengers from the North Michigan Avenue area to Metra's Ogilvie Transportation Center, Shoreline's service is aimed more toward tourists- they also operate harbor cruises, charters and architectural tours from the river. However, commuters still use the service, as it is a convenient way to get from Navy Pier and the Streeterville area to Union Station. Obviously though, on this Fourth of July, the riders were strictly for leisure. The boat departs the Ogden Slip rather than from Navy Pier itself- this slip is used by boats heading down the Chicago River rather than out to Lake Michigan. A lock separates the river from the lake, as it has been altered to drain through the river since early last century. Various bridges of streets above are passed under, including Lake Shore Drive's double-decked highway bridge, the double-deck Du Sable Bridge on Michigan Avenue, and Wells and Lake Street bridges, which carry the Brown and Purple, and Pink and Green Lines of the CTA 'L' on their upper decks, respectively. The short trip ends at the Adams Street dock, south of the bridge and on the east side of the river. To get to it, the boat does a 'U'-turn in the middle of the river. The terminal tracks of Union Station can be seen abutting the river. ~Thanks for watching!~

Morning Walk - Lake Michigan & Grant Park / Millennium Park – Chicago Illinois
Grant Park is a large urban park (319 acres or 1.29 km²) in the Loop community area of Chicago. Located in Chicago's central business district, the park's most notable features are Millennium Park, Buckingham Fountain, the Art Institute of Chicago and the Museum Campus. Originally known as Lake Park, and dating from the city's founding, it was renamed in 1901 to honor Ulysses S. Grant. The park's area has been expanded several times through land reclamation, and was the focus of several disputes in the late 1800s and early 1900s over open space use. It is bordered on the north by Randolph Street, on the south by Roosevelt Road and McFetridge Drive, on the west by Michigan Avenue and on the east by Lake Michigan. The park contains performance venues, gardens, art work, sporting, and harbor facilities. It hosts public gatherings, and several large annual events. The park is often called "Chicago's front yard". It is governed by the Chicago Park District. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grant_Park_(Chicago) Millennium Park is a public park located in the Loop community area of Chicago in Illinois, US, and originally intended to celebrate the millennium. It is a prominent civic center near the city's Lake Michigan shoreline that covers a 24.5-acre (99,000 m2) section of northwestern Grant Park. The area was previously occupied by parkland, Illinois Central rail yards, and parking lots.[1] The park, which is bounded by Michigan Avenue, Randolph Street, Columbus Drive and East Monroe Drive, features a variety of public art. As of 2009, Millennium Park trailed only Navy Pier as a Chicago tourist attraction.[2] Planning of the park began in October 1997. Construction began in October 1998, and Millennium Park was opened in a ceremony on July 16, 2004, four years behind schedule. The three-day opening celebrations were attended by some 300,000 people and included an inaugural concert by the Grant Park Orchestra and Chorus. The park has received awards for its accessibility and green design.[3] Millennium Park has free admission,[4] and features the Jay Pritzker Pavilion, Cloud Gate, the Crown Fountain, the Lurie Garden, and various other attractions. The park is connected by the BP Pedestrian Bridge and the Nichols Bridgeway to other parts of Grant Park. Because the park sits atop a parking garage and the commuter rail Millennium Station, it is considered the world's largest rooftop garden. Some observers consider Millennium Park to be the city's most important project since the World's Columbian Exposition of 1893.[4][5] It far exceeded its originally proposed budget of $150 million. The final cost of $475 million was borne by Chicago taxpayers and private donors. The city paid $270 million; private donors paid the rest,[6] and assumed roughly half of the financial responsibility for the cost overruns.[7] The construction delays and cost overruns were attributed to poor planning, many design changes, and cronyism. Many critics have praised the completed park. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Millennium_Park Lake Michigan is one of the five Great Lakes of North America and the only one located entirely within the United States. The other four Great Lakes are shared by the U.S. and Canada. It is the second-largest of the Great Lakes by volume[1] and the third-largest by surface area, after Lake Superior and Lake Huron (and is slightly smaller than the U.S. state of West Virginia). To the east, its basin is conjoined with that of Lake Huron through the wide Straits of Mackinac, giving it the same surface elevation as its easterly counterpart; the two are technically a single lake.[4] Lake Michigan is shared, from west to east, by the U.S. states of Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, and Michigan. The word "Michigan" originally referred to the lake itself, and is believed to come from the Ojibwa word mishigami meaning "great water".[5] Lake Michigan is also the only one of the five Great Lakes not to share a shoreline with the Canadian province of Ontario, the only province in Canada that borders the Great Lakes. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lake_Michigan

Navy Pier has been a Chicago icon and popular destination throughout much of its history. It offers a diverse and eclectic experience and is positioned in one of the most unique settings in the world. As Navy Pier approaches its centennial in 2016, now is the time to revisit its legacy and reimagine its potential through a contemporary lens. Navy Pier has enjoyed both popular and commercial success. It already has much of what is necessary to become a world-class public place, but for the Pier to truly achieve this status it must embrace and implement a new vision. The search for a Pierscape design team is an important part of a larger Navy Pier initiative entitled The Centennial Vision whose goal is to make Navy Pier a truly iconic and world-class destination. The SkyLine: Chicago may install aerial gondola ride to boost tourism - TomoNews
CHICAGO — Chicago is reviewing an ambitious plan to install aerial cable cars, dubbed “The SkyLine,” as the city’s newest tourist attraction. The idea was first presented at a luncheon of the City Club of Chicago in May. The aerial gondola ride would stretch from Wacker Drive to Navy Pier along the Chicago River. The gondolas would be lifted 17 stories above the ground and are able to transport about 3,000 people per hour. The ride would operate day and night all year round. It is said to be able to attract 1.4 million visitors a year to Chicago. The estimated cost for the project is about $250 million. The founder of the project is confident that it can be privately financed without any state or city funding. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. A Tour Of Chicago 1930s (home movie)
My grandfather, Noel A Hughes, filmed this home movie in 8 mm and edited it as shown. His probable intention was to use it as part of a lecture about Chicago. This was probably filmed around 1936 and 1937. At the time my grandfather was finishing his degree at George Williams College and planning to return to his family home in Australia. (For more about my grandfather's journey to Chicago, visit http://afathersletters.blogspot.com ) He ended up staying in Chicago and having a long career with the Evanston YMCA.
