Jim Stray-Gundersen - Blood Flow Restriction Training: Anti-aging medicine for the busy baby boomer
This lecture is part of the IHMC Evening Lecture series. https://www.ihmc.us/life/evening_lectures/ Enter code IHMC for a 15% discount at https://www.gobstrong.com/ref/30/ Blood Flow Restriction Training has attracted an increasing amount of attention in the last 5-10 years in the US. However, work has focused on rehabilitation from musculo-skeletal injuries and improvement in strength and fitness for Olympic and Professional athletes. We recognize that regular exercise and good nutritional practices are the “medicines” for health and fitness. We can take the lessons from Olympians and incorporate them into our busy lives. We know that regular exercise mitigates the effects of many chronic diseases, but to do so, requires “doses” of exercise that many find impossible to do on a regular basis. Alas, there are a million reasons why we don’t incorporate regular exercise into our busy lives. BFR Training is well suited to providing “doable”, safe and effective, robust exercise in a short period of time (15 to 20 minutes), anywhere, anytime for all age groups. Regular BFR Training is the solution for many of the chronic health problems of the nation. Some call it “anti-aging” medicine. Dr. Jim Stray-Gundersen has helped pioneer the use of blood flow restriction training in the US and Europe. Board Certified in General Surgery, Jim’s background is both academic and athletic. His “day job” has been as research faculty in Cardiology and Orthopedics at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in Dallas, Texas. He has also worked for 35+ years in Olympic and Professional Sports, focusing on winter and summer endurance sports including a 30 year relationship with Alberto Salazar, (coach and director of the NIKE Oregon Project) and as physician, physiologist and nutritionist for United States, Norwegian, German and Canadian National teams in the sports of track and field, cycling, swimming, all types of skiing, speed skating, and biathlon. He has served on international medical committees that include the International Olympic Committee, FIFA, International Biathlon Committee, International Ski Federation and the International Skating Union. Jim currently serves as the sports science advisor for the US Ski and Snowboard Association (USSA), and is the founder of the SG Performance Medicine Center in Park City, Utah. His current focus is understanding and application of Blood Flow Restriction (BFR) Training.

The Brave Athlete: Calm the F*ck Down and Rise to the Occasion
Listen to the full episode here: http://bengreenfieldfitness.libsyn.com/the-brave-athlete-calm-the-fck-down-and-rise-to-the-occasion It's high time to dig into another one of the dog-eared books on my shelf - one of those titles that I folded over, highlighted and scribbled in profusely. The book, entitled, "The Brave Athlete: Calm the F*ck Down and Rise to the Occasion", claims to solve the 13 most common mental conundrums athletes face in their everyday training and in races. It's based on the idea that you don’t have one brain - you have three; your ancient Chimp brain that keeps you alive, your modern Professor brain that navigates the civilized world, and your Computer brain that runs your habits (good and bad). They fight for control all the time and that’s when bad things happen; you get crazy nervous before a race, you choke under pressure, you quit when the going gets tough, you make dumb mistakes, you worry about how you look. What if you could stop the thoughts and feelings you don’t want? What if you could feel confident, suffer like a hero, and handle any stress? According to today's podcast guests and the authors of the book - Dr. Simon Marshall and Lesley Paterson - you can indeed take control of your brain so you can train harder, race faster, and better enjoy your sport. Dr. Simon Marshall trains the brains of endurance athletes and fitness enthusiasts to become happier and more mentally tough. He is former Professor of Family and Preventive Medicine at the University of California, San Diego and Professor of Exercise Science at San Diego State University where he was Director of the Graduate Program in Sport & Exercise Psychology. He has published over 100 scientific articles on the psychology of exercise and has been cited in the scientific literature over 10,000 times. He has served as invited expert on exercise science for the National Institutes of Health, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the American Cancer Society. He is currently the Performance Psychologist for the BMC Racing team, an elite WorldTour professional cycling team. As the sherpa-husband of professional triathlete Lesley Paterson, he is the founding member of Team S.H.I.T. (Supportive Husbands in Training), and competes in triathlon or cycling events as the husband of Lesley Paterson. Lesley Paterson is a professional mountain biker, 3-time world champion in off-road triathlon, an Ironman® triathlon champion, endurance coach, and foul-mouthed Scots lassie. Growing up in Scotland, Lesley was the only girl on an all-boys rugby team, which is where she nurtured her love of dirt and dirty words. Banned from the team when puberty struck, she took up cross-country running and triathlon and was soon winning national titles and competing internationally. Lesley founded Braveheart Coaching to train and inspire endurance athletes to compete with passion, toughness, and an unwavering “Braveheart” spirit in overcoming obstacles. Paterson is a trained actress, a screenwriter, and personal trainer to Hollywood actors. MBB 2010 -- Coaches against Cancer
Men's head coach Paul Grove explains his suit with white tennies before the tipoff for a game against Presentation. By lacing up sneakers with their suits, participating coaches nationwide will spotlight the fact that while cancer remains a major health concern, everyone can take daily steps to reduce their risk of the disease. For those who do not smoke, weight control, regular exercise and a healthy diet are the best ways to improve health and reduce cancer risk. Obesity has been shown to increase the risk for many forms of cancer, including breast, prostate and colon cancers and may account for 20 percent of cancer deaths in women and 14 percent in men. The Coaches vs. Cancer program is a vital, year-round link between the American Cancer Society and the NABC that empowers basketball coaches, their teams and communities to join the fight against cancer. Said Jim Satalin, director of the Coaches vs. Cancer program with the Society, The program draws from the personal experiences, community leadership and the professional excellence of coaches nationwide to increase public awareness of the Societys mission to save lives and prevent cancer, and to raise funds to fight the disease on a variety of fronts. Thanks to the dedicated efforts of college and high school coaches across the country, Coaches vs. Cancer participants have raised nearly $45 million since 1993 to help the Society save lives by educating and empowering people to avoid cancer or find it early, helping people facing cancer make decisions and overcome obstacles in their personal fight investing in research that yields groundbreaking discoveries into cancers causes and cures and helping pass laws that fight cancer and keep our communities healthy. The American Cancer Society is dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem by saving lives, diminishing suffering and preventing cancer through research, education, advocacy and service. Founded in 1913 and with national headquarters in Atlanta, the Society has 13 regional Divisions and local offices in 3,400 communities, involving millions of volunteers across the United States. Professional Photographers Wanted for National Family Portrait Month.
Professional Portrait Photographers are Wanted for National Family Portrait Month. 50 Years As a Professional Photographer For the past two years I have been a photography business coach and consultant, and I talk to a variety of different people in the photography industry every day, especially professional wedding/portrait photographers. Some photographers are frustrated. They are frustrated as the dirt cheap photographers are downgrading the value within the profession. I understand and empathise with their concerns. The time has long gone when well-exposed, well composed, and creative photography was only available from a professional photographer. These days when mobile phones and inexpensive compact cameras have auto exposure, auto focus, face recognition, image stabilisation and a whole bunch of apps to make them look cleaner or retro etc, makes it easy for almost anyone to create a good image Images are now generally viewed not as prints on paper, or in a frame, but on social networking sites like Facebook, and on computers, notebooks and mobile phones. Because of this, less people expect to pay very much for professional images. Let’s start getting some momentum to bring back the idea of having a quality family portrait taken. That’s the first step. The Question Is, How Do We Do That? I’ve put together a promotion that I am personally confident will give the industry a kick start. In conjunction with the NATIONAL BREAST CANCER FOUNDATION I am initiating an annual event called NATIONAL FAMILY PORTRAIT MONTH www.familyportraitmonth.com.au What is The Main Purpose of National Family Portrait Month? To raise $20,000 for the National Breast Cancer Foundation. To create awareness for early detection of Breast Cancer. To lift the profile of the full time Professional Photographer. To widen the gap between the full time professional and the amateur. To provide inspiration and motivation for families to have their photograph taken. To lift the awareness of the importance of having family portraits on the wall. To unite the whole photography industry to help build a stronger industry. To keep family history alive in printed form. We all know that lives can change in a heartbeat. So many families have been effected by breast cancer, including our National Ambassador AIPP Master Photographer Shireen Hammond. I feel that the National Family Portrait Month will motivate lots of families around Australia to get in front of a professional photographer’s camera. For a $65 participation fee to the National Breast Cancer Foundation, families will be able to have a photography session with one of Australia’s top portrait photographers. Once the photographs are taken then of course the family will be invited to view the images with the opportunity of purchasing photographs. So how do I want your support? I am looking for companies who want to show off their support by including their company logo on the bottom of the home page on the National Family Portrait Month website, www.familyportraitmonth.com.au and promoting the event. If you are a full time Professional Photographer and want to know more, please contact me. Call me on 0418509228 or email info@aswpp.com.au Regards Bernie Griffiths www.berniegriffiths.com. A Day of Inspiration Melbourne
Australia's top Photography Coach Bernie Griffiths presented A Day of Inspiration in Melbourne to professional photographers to help raise funds for the National Breast Cancer Foundation. The event was in conjunction with Photography Coach Bernie Griffiths and his initiative of National Family Portrait Month. Are You Ready To Take The Next Step In Your Photography Business? I’m really excited! www.berniegriffiths.com My name is Bernie Griffiths, and as a photography business coach I have coached many photographers over the years from those with many years as big studio owners, to photographers who are working part time. A couple of weeks ago, I spoke to a photographer who had been trying to start a photography business but she just could not get it all happening. Because she wasn’t making any money, she could not afford my coaching and consulting programs, so she asked if I would consider putting together a more affordable program for photographers like her, to help them to build a strong business foundation so that they could turn their passion for photography into a viable business. So, I created a super effective step-by-step “Live” Mentoring Program that will guide you and give you some easy to learn basic business principles to create and grow your photography (even if you’re on a limited budget). It’s an uphill battle to make good sales. Having trouble getting enough customers? You want to take your business to the next level but are not sure which direction you want to go. If you’ve answered ‘yes’ to any of these questions, then this Program is for you. Having owned a successful Photography studio for over 40 years, and being a photography business coach, I have some good insights into how to do the right things, and not waste time and money on the wrong things. Running a successful photography business has changed rapidly—a totally new approach is needed to keep up. I will guide, with proven systems, and a way to create success and fulfilment in your business. Just to say THANK YOU for taking this program I will also include my all NEW e-books “Wedding Photography Phone Enquiry Success Guide, ” The Portrait Photography Soft Sell Guide” and “The Portrait Photography Phone Enquiry Success Guide.” In the Photography Business Mentor Me Program You Will Learn….. Photography Business Coach Bernie Griffiths Will Help. This Mentoring program is not a “quick fix” or an instant solution to getting the right customers. So many photographers look on the Internet trying to find a Magic Wand to wave over their photography business, thinking that if they do they will have instant success. This is very unrealistic. This is a “one on one” Personal Photography Business Mentoring Program that will give you the Right Proven Marketing and Business Strategies to lift your photography business to the next level. I’ll provide powerful coaching and feedback to help you and show you exactly what to do. There are lots of mentoring programs out there but this one is unique. It is truly “one on one”. You will have me right next to you, holding you by the hand, and showing you exactly how to apply the strategies for your business. It’s exactly what I would be doing with my higher priced clients with my Photography Coaching Programs. I will personally answer each of your individual questions! "Mentoring with Bernie has seen me go from trying to run a cheap shoot and burn business competing only on price with other local photographers to one where I now have the confidence to raise my prices, sell the products I want and attract the type of client I need to make my business succeed. I have gone from being nowhere on a Google search of photographers in my area to being on page 1, all of this within a few short weeks by just following Bernie’s instructions”. FS North Tribute Flip Saunders
On Sunday Minnesota Timberwolves President of Basketball Operations and head coach Flip Saunders passed away at the age of 60, just four months after being diagnosed with Hodgkin's lymphoma. Stephon Marbury, who spent three seasons playing for Saunders, posted a tribute to his former coach on Sunday. "My heart and all of my love goes out to Flip Saunders. Family as your leader leaves this earth in the flesh," Marbury wrote on his Instagram page. "His spirit lives in the present as we speak." Saunders was a basketball lifer. He played for the University of Minnesota in the early 70s and began his coaching career in 1977. He spent nearly 20 years working at the college level, and in the Continental Basketball Association, before being hired as Timberwolves GM in 1995. That year he took over as head coach, and remained in that position for 10 years, before being fired in 2005. After that Saunders had stints in Detroit and Washington, and a pitstop at ESPN, until he was rehired by Minnesota in June 2014. During his first stint with the Timberwolves, Saunders traded the draft rights of Ray Allen, the No. 5 overall pick in the 1996 draft, to the Bucks in exchange for Stephon Marbury, who Milwaukee had selected one pick earlier. "In 1996 Flip became a father figure and my first #NBA coach," added Marbury in his tribute. "Wow how fast time blows by. Our conversations were so meaningful in ways that helped me understand the game of life by explaining the game of basketball. Your kind soul and loving ways helped me understand how to play the most important position in the sport of basketball. You gave me not only the chance to perform at a high level but a chance to communicate my thoughts on the game. You taught me how to play the pick and roll but you also taught me how to pick up and roll with the good and bad in the life. As a rookie we had so many conversations in such a short time period. David Pastrnak - Believer
The best of David Pastrnak When Pastrnak walked on stage at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia as the No. 25 player chosen in the 2014 NHL Draft by the Boston Bruins, he kissed his hand and pointed to the heavens. The tribute, personal and heartfelt, was for his father, an advisor, cheerleader, inspiration and hockey/life coach, who passed away of cancer only 13 months earlier. Milan Pastrnak had always dreamt of his son playing professional hockey in the NHL, and now here was David slipping the famed Bruins jersey over his head. Heading into the draft, Central Scouting had Pastrnak ranked fifth among European skaters, and at 6-foot-1 and 180 pounds, it was felt that in time Pastrnak would fill out and his puck and passing skills would approach NHL levels. After signing an entry-level contract and attending the Bruins' 2014 training camp, the Czech Republic-born Pastrnak was sent to Providence of the American Hockey League. But he didn't stay long. A run of 11 goals and 28 points in 25 games triggered a November call-up. On Jan. 10, 2015, at the Wells Fargo Center, the very arena where he was drafted and saluted his late father, Pastrnak scored his first two NHL goals in a 3-1 victory against of the Philadelphia Flyers. He finished the 2014-2015 season with a 10 goals and 27 points in 46 games. Expectations were high for the 19-year-old's first full year in a Boston jersey, and he opened the schedule occupying prime territory, patrolling the right flank on a line alongside countryman David Krejci and newly-added left winger Matt Beleskey, along with the added responsibility of second-unit power play minutes. As Christmas time approached, the Bruins released Pastrnak to participate in a third World Junior Hockey Championship. The Czech Republic finished fifth, with Pastrnak scoring one goal and four points to increase his three-tournament total to three goals and 14 points. In 51 games for Boston, he scored 15 goals and 26 points. year after he put up 70 points 34 goals and 36 assists showing everyone why david pastrnak is elite player in the nhl awarding him a new contract fresh of 70 points david pastrnak wanted to take it to the next level showing everyone hes not a one good season player upping his totals this season to 80 points 10 more then last year 35 goals 45 assists!! coming into the 2018 playoffs vs the leafs david pastrnak really came to life having a 6 point game and being completely dominant in the first to games of the series helping the boston bruins become believers in the stanley cup playoffs eliminating the toronto maple leafs in 7 games and on to face tampa bay in the second round! This is my Highlight video of David pastrnak young career i hope you guys all enjoyed it! more to come and with pastrnak only being 21 years old im sure there will be plenty more where that came from pastrnak on the nhltimes channel !! The (uncomfortable) truth of HR and leadership development | Patrick Vermeren | TEDxKMA
Quackery and pseudoscience can be very dangerous. Not only in medicine but also in human resources. Alarmed by the nonsensical ideas of Transactional Analysis, Patrick Vermeren set out on a mission to reveal the truth about the many HR theories, models and questionnaires. The academic literature revealed that most HR practices (in recruitment, assessment, development, coaching…) are very problematic and some even dangerous. In this Talk valid alternatives are presented. Patrick Vermeren has been active as a consultant, trainer and coach since 1996. He built on his experience at major Belgian banks ( Cera and Dexia) and an American multinational ( Procter & Gamble). Since he joined Perco he advises HR professionals and he guides groups and individuals in the areas of leadership, coaching and facilitating decision making in groups ( participation). He also assists CEOs, managers and high potentials through training and personal coaching. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at http://ted.com/tedx
