Warning Speak to a physician before starting to take a vitamin of any kind. Step 1: Select form Narrow down your choices based on how you would like to ingest your vitamin: in powder form, capsule, tablet, or liquid. Step 2: Choose dosage Further narrow down your selection by deciding how often you would like to take a vitamin: a single daily dose or spread out throughout the day. Step 3: Check essential vitamins Make sure it provides at least 100 percent of the eight essential vitamins: thiamine or B-1, riboflavin or B-2, niacin or B-3, B-6, B-12, D, E, and folic acid. Step 4: Confirm vitamin A & C Check that it contains some vitamin A and vitamin C. Tip Too much vitamin A has been found to increase hip fracture when over 4300 incremental units are taken daily; and too much vitamin C may cause an upset stomach and/or diarrhea. Step 5: Check mineral level Check mineral levels. It should provides at least 50% of your daily chromium, copper, magnesium, selenium, and zinc. Tip Magnesium can be obtained from whole-grains and may not require supplementation. Step 6: Separate calcium Don't worry about getting calcium in your multivitamin -- it's better taken separately, as the daily recommended levels are too large to be contained a single pill. Step 7: Avoid too much phosphorus Avoid multivitamins with too much phosphorus, which we get plenty of in our diets. Step 8: Consider iron If you're a woman, vegetarian, or have been diagnosed as anemic, select a multivitamin that contains iron in ferrous form, which is most readily absorbed. Tip If your multivitamin contains iron, take it with a piece of fruit. Not only can it cause intestinal discomfort on an empty stomach, but the fruit's vitamin C will help it absorb. Step 9: Compare prices Compare prices and remember that you're shopping for a daily multivitamin, which can add up. Tip Cheaper multivitamins may contain fillers such as starches and silica, while expensive multivitamins tend to be more pure. Step 10: Confirm quality Only purchase quality-guaranteed or laboratory-tested multivitamins. Step 11: Take regularly Now that you've chosen your multivitamin, make sure you take it regularly. In the morning! • As multivitamins contain both water and fat soluble vitamins, be sure to include some healthy fats with your meal for optimal absorption. -B-Complex vitamins - Taking B vitamins with breakfast helps to boost your metabolism and convert your food into energy, which can be used throughout the day. -Vitamin C- Vitamin C is best taken in the morning to support the immune system and boost energy levels. • Vitamin C is a water soluble vitamin that lasts only a few hours in the blood stream, so if your formula recommends more than 1 tablet per day, take it in divided doses with meals to get the full benefit. Key points: - 1 in 3 of people in US take a multivitamin. - 12 billion $ each year in US is spent on vitamin and mineral supplements. - Companies would love for us to believe that "More is better" when it comes to micronutrition, and that we all should taking more of these health supplements will help us achieve some superhuman "OPTIMAL HEALTH" but that's just not true. - Outside of medical conditions and deficiencies excess amounts of vitamins have no effect at best, and at worse can lead to negative effects. - Recommended daily intake of vitamins and minerals are established for the general population - not people who train on a regular basis. - Because you are putting your body through stress when you exercise, your nutrient requirements increase - this includes both macronutrients (protein/fat/carbs) and also micronutrients (vitamins/minerals). A deficiency in any of these nutrients will lead to worsened performance, recovery and general progress. Ideally, we'd get all of the vitamins and minerals we need from the food we eat, but this is easier said than done. - First there’s the issue of the ever-declining quality of soil and food (even in the world of organic), which is making it harder to get adequate nutrition from our diets. - Then there’s the fact that maintaining optimal levels of vitamin and mineral intake requires a bit of planned dietary diversity, which can be done, but can also be time consuming. I like how Lyle McDonald calls the basic one per day multi-vitamin/mineral a "cheap nutritional insurance." Basically it may correct and/or prevent any minor deficiencies. Theoretically, then, a multivitamin is a no-brainer. Buying Guidelines: There's no need to go for super expensive formulations. I know guys are obsessed by this and often buy the most expensive supplements but in reality you just wanna look at a few things and for the most port the ingredients inside are the same origin. Bottom Line: If you think you need more get the less expensive one and simply take two (split morning and evening). Men who eat a lot of red meat go for a multivitamin that does not contain iron. NOTE: Never assume you can get away with eating a crappy diet full of processed foods because your multi- will "cover" the difference. Poor nutrient diet will lead to very poor health. We see this all the time. If you're eating a variety of real food, including plenty of fruits, vegetables and mainly nutrient-dense unprocessed foods, you can get by without a multi. Then again "Why not" go for it since it's not so expensive and you're gonna be 100 safe. Beyond that, the only legal stuff that makes some difference for performance is Creatine and Caffeine. Must Know: Why You Need to Stay Away From These Vitamins Multivitamin and mineral supplements became available in the 1940s, and Americans actively use them ever since. Nowadays, millions of people use supplements in order to strengthen their health and avoid nutrient deficiencies. Most people take a balanced combination of essential vitamins and minerals in the form of a multivitamin, such as Centrum vitamins. Multivitamins accounted for 40 percent of all supplement purchases, which is $5.7 billion out of the $37 billion in supplement sales in 2014 alone. Centrum vitamins, by Pfizer, are the best-selling multivitamins in the country. Their produces is the biggest pharmaceutical company worldwide, which deals mainly in manufactured chemicals. Yet, the company is also known due to the numerous legal battles, frauds, and controversy. It was recently threatened to be sued over false claims about Centrum vitamins in 2012 by the consumer watchdog group Center for Science in the Public Interest. Eventually, the company had to pull claims about breast and colon health. Moreover, it lacks regulation, specificity, and even standards. Namely, the multivitamins ask for no set standards or levels. Yet, it does what all big corporations regularly do: it pays large sums of money for advertising their chemically and synthetically enhanced supplements which can, in fact, do more harm than good. Apparently, even though these multivitamins are advertised to boost immunity and kick your metabolism they actually contain multiple additives which can be harmful or toxic to your body. Centrum vitamins contain at least 3 preservatives and several color additives, along with many toxic and even carcinogenic chemicals and additives. Here is a list of their dangerous ingredients: -Calcium Carbonate — This compound is found in rocks, shells, and even pearls. It is sometimes used to raise calcium levels in the body; but has been related to strokes and heart disease, especially in the elderly. Studies have also linked it to heart issues and myocardial infarction. -Polyethylene Glycol — It is often used in the manufacturing of coal-burning plants, rocket fuel, and over-the-counter laxatives. It might lead to kidney damage, hives and other allergic reactions, esophageal bleeding, tears, and autism. In children, it might cause encopresis, which is a continuous leakage of semi-formed feces. -Hydrogenated Oil — Hydrogenated oils quickly become toxic when processed under extreme heat, atmospheres of pressure and injections of metals. Their consumption clogs the arteries, leading to massive heart and arterial issues, and also results in producing cholesterol to bandage artery walls which have been affected. Due to the vascular issues, it affects the brain and causes Alzheimer’s and ADHD. -Food Dye Yellow 6 — This is a toxic food dye which is a carcinogen and might result in allergies, tumors on the kidneys and testes, and chromosomal damage. It might also cause ADHD, hyperactivity, and restlessness. -GMO Corn Starch — It has multiple adverse effects on the body and affects the detoxifying organs such as the liver and kidneys, but also damages the spleen, heart, and adrenal glands. Its another side effect is Hepatorenal Toxicity, which leads to kidney failure and is typically fatal. -Titanium Dioxide — It has been found to be potentially carcinogenic to humans. It’s included in various products as a whitening agent, like in ink, paper, paints, and even cosmetics and toothpaste. Even though it has been previously considered to be safe by the FDA, it has been recently found to cause lung cancer in rats. What is even more disturbing is that the Centrum vitamins for children are even more dangerous, as they include the following hazardous additives: -Cupric Oxide — This copper mineral is known to be dangerous in Europe. It causes kidney disease and childhood cirrhosis, and it is also dangerous to the environment. -Artificial Sweeteners (Aspartame) — As soon as it is ingested, this carcinogenic sweetener is converted to formaldehyde and methanol, and causes 40 adverse side effects, including birth defects, ADD, cancer, lupus, multiple sclerosis and more. -Zinc Oxide — In Europe, it is considered to be harmful, and leads to diarrhea, constipation, upset stomach and more. -Lactose (Milk Sugar) — Lactose makes up 2-8 % of the milk by weight. Specific enzymes in the stomach break it down, leading to lactose intolerance, and symptoms like vomiting, diarrhea, bloating, cramping, upset stomach, and nausea. In this short video, we will be looking at why Multivitamins are important for weight loss. People that take multivitamin supplements can possibly meet their daily requirements of various vitamins and minerals needed by the body. This is why they have improved metabolism and effective functioning of various body functions, which in turn aids with weight loss. They also have decreased appetite and lower body fat percentage, as opposed to those who don’t take the supplements. How multivitamins for weight loss works Multivitamins work in various ways when it comes to reducing weight. Vitamins such as BI, B2, B3, and B6 are integral part of multivitamins and as such are very necessary for digestion. Therefore, if you’re taking multivitamin supplements, you’ll have an improved digestion, which will make you have better control of your weight. When your body lacks some nutrients such as zinc and B6, there will be a reduction in the level of serotonin produced from the brain, which will subsequently lead to increase in appetite. Therefore, when you take multivitamin supplements, it will help reduce your appetite, as well as control your weight. Some nutrients also keep the body’s metabolism in check and control blood sugar level, thereby assisting with weight management. How many multivitamins should one have? The dosage for most supplements is one capsule per day. It’s recommended to have these supplements 6 times per week because most of them contain a higher amount than the prescribed daily allowance of nutrients. If you’re taking multivitamin, multi-mineral supplement, then take it one hour before or after food. They shouldn’t be taken with meals unlike when you’re having only multivitamin supplement. If you’re prone to kidney stones, then you should avoid taking multi-mineral supplements unless with a doctor’s prescription. Also, pregnant women and smokers should avoid taking vitamin A supplements as excess amount of it increases the risk of birth defects for pregnant women and lung cancer in smokers. You’ll need to decrease your caloric intake by changing your diet, as consuming only multivitamin on a daily basis cannot make you lose weight. Go for healthy fats, complex carbohydrates and lean protein in addition to 30-40 minutes exercise on most days of the week. This will help your body burn fat, as well as produce lean muscle. What will improve your overall health and weight in the longrun is the combination of frequent exercise, calorie restriction and daily consumption of multivitamins. One excellent study in The Journal of the American Medical Association found that women who take over-the-counter multivitamins in the first months of pregnancy dramatically reduce their risk of giving birth to a neurologically damaged child. Neural tube defects are amongst the most horrible and most common birth defects. They cause everything from death to paralysis in the child, and they affect between 1 and 2 babies in every 1000 births. The study was carried out under the direction of Aubrey Milunsky, director of Boston University's prestigious Center for Human Genetics. It involved 23,000 women, half of whom took multivitamin pills containing folic acid—a B-group vitamin in particularly high demand during pregnancy. The results were astonishing. The incidence of neural tube defects in babies born to the women who took the supplements was less than a quarter of what it was amongst those women who took no supplements. So remarkable were these results that they shook to the core FDA officials, who had insisted for generations that taking nutritional supplements is not only unnecessary but, can cause damage our health. Nevertheless, the FDA and CODEX continue to propagandize the ridiculous idea that “nutrition has no significance for health”. The notion that if vitamins and minerals are allowed on the market, they should only be permitted in ultra-low doses. As a result, month-by-month, clinically effective nutrients are being treated as “toxins”. The levels of nutrients they contain are being reduced. Many are being removed from public access in one country after another. There’s a wonderful way around all this which I strongly urge you to explore. Shun chemically made vitamins—which over 90% on the market are—and take food-state nutrients instead. Most vitamins you buy in shops or online are made from synthetic chemicals. They’ve been manufactured in a laboratory in a futile effort to match the molecular structure of naturally occurring vitamins and minerals found in our foods. As a result, they are chock full of chemically-made nutrients. Your body has been designed to absorb vitamins and minerals from the foods you eat. Manmade synthetics can never match natural molecular structures. In no way are they the same. Our bodies do not handle synthetics well. You can be taking a high-potency, man-made synthetic that somebody’s recommended, yet not effectively absorbing the vitamins and minerals it contains. This is a major reason why I am passionate about whole-food natural vitamins and minerals. Good manufacturers of whole-food vitamins usually grow most botanicals themselves that go into their food-state formulas. Using state-of-the-art scientific instrumentation, they test, validate and document the potencies of the raw materials that make up their products with high performance liquid chromatography for testing potency.
