Oggun; A Tractor from Alabama with Global Applications?

The Oggun Tractor is the brainchild of the partners in Cleber, LLC, Horace Clemmons and Saul Berenthal, who had previosly owned a software company together. Berenthal left Cuba at the age of 16 and always had a dream of returning and starting a business there. When relations between the two countries started to warm late in 2014, he contacted his former partner to discuss fulfilling his vision and starting a software company in Cuba. Clemmons researched the potential and found that while Cuba isn't ready for computer software, what they do need are tractors, because of their aging Russian-made fleet and their newly-privatized small farms. The first prototype was made in 2015 and this past week Clemons completed a trek across the mid section of the country promoting the concept. I caught up with him at a demonstration in the southwest part of Missouri and he told me the Oggun story. Cubans actually provided the name for the tractor. Clemmons told me, "As our tractor defines the transition from livestock to mechanization we described it as the Iron Horse Tractor. While working in Cuba, the Cuban farmers had an idea for a name - Oggún, the mythical god for metalworks and protector of the people. And so, our Iron Horse Tractor is called Oggún." The tractor is designed mainly for close-in cultivation of vegetable-type crops, but there will be finish mower and rotary cutter attachments available soon. It's powered by a Honda engine, has a three point and PTO, but it's only two wheel drive, and there is no loader available for it. It will sell for $12,500, and only directly to customers, there will be no dealer network. Parts for the tractor, though, are readily available and Clemmons says the design is so simple that people with even limited mechanical abilities and tools will be able to service it. Long term plans are for the Oggun to be built and sold throughout the world and possibly morph in to a skid loader or utility vehicle. It's a new concept, a very unique business model and it will be interesting to see if the company has hit on a magic formula to reach farmers in Cuba and around the world with their new tractor concept. Progress Report on Native Prairie Restoration Ruckman Project - Grand River Conference
Presenters: David Wolf, The Environmental Defense Fund; Conner Woods and John Murphy, Roeslein Alternative Energy; Jordan Giese, Iowa State University “We are starting in the uplands by trying to affect the Highly Erodible Land in those portions of the watershed with productive prairie that meets all three objectives of the vision: Ecological services, wildlife habitat benefits and biomass yield for energy production,” Murphy said. The Grand River conference was organized by St. Louis-based Roeslein Alternative Energy (RAE) and hosted by Smithfield Foods at their regional office in Princeton, Missouri on May 17, 2018. RAE is in engaged in a large project to capture methane from hog manure at Smithfield’s nine northern Missouri farms and convert it to renewable natural gas using anaerobic digestion systems. “Through this initiative, multiple partners are coming together to improve the local landscape and waterways,” said Rudi Roeslein, President and Founder of Roeslein Alternative Energy. “Together, we’re creating a pathway that works; a market-based solution around nutrient losses, water quality, and clean air.” Originally from the Eastern Shore of Maryland, John eventually moved to central Ohio where he earned a B.A. in Biology from Cedarville College. It was also there that he began work for the Ohio Division of Wildlife, in public land management. From Ohio, John moved to Northern Missouri, where he earned a M.S. in Biology from Truman State University. John worked for the Missouri Department of Conservation in a diverse array of jobs prior to being hired as a Private Land Conservationist (PLC) in 2000. Although not simultaneously, through the span of John’s work as a PLC, he had responsibilities in Worth, Gentry, Harrison, Mercer, Putnam, Sullivan, Schuyler, and Adair Counties. His passion in those counties was fire ecology and the restoration of natural communities, especially prairie and savannas. Since March of 2017 John has been a part of the RAE team, continuing to work on solutions to positively affect natural resources. He and his wife, Sharon, reside just outside of Kirksville, Missouri with their five children. David Wolfe (B.S. and M.E. Agricultural Engineering, University of Florida and M.S. Ecology, University of Georgia) is Director, Conservation Strategy with Environmental Defense Fund. Mr. Wolfe began his conservation career as a field ecologist with The Nature Conservancy in 1992. In 2000 he began working as a scientist with EDF to implement incentive-based programs for conservation of endangered species on private lands. This work involved the development and implementation of safe harbor and Farm Bill conservation programs to benefit endangered species, including the golden-cheeked warbler, black-capped vireo and ocelot. Mr. Wolfe is currently taking a leadership role in development of the Monarch Butterfly Habitat Exchange. He drafted a proposal to the Smithfield Foundation that led to the funding of the 1,000-acre Missouri prairie restoration project, which is a collaboration amongst Smithfield Foods, RAE, Missouri Prairie Foundation and several other partners.

Bull Moose Industries to expand in downtown St. Louis
Gov. Jay Nixon today announced that Bull Moose Industries, a subsidiary of UK-based Caparo Group, founded by The Rt. Hon. Lord Paul of Marylebone, will expand its North American headquarters in St. Louis and create up to 25 high-paying jobs. The announcement also highlighted the company’s decision to invest in the renovation of the former Missouri Theater Building, which will become home to a multi-use development site and include offices, restaurants and shops, as well as a hotel. While leading a European trade mission in 2013, the Governor met with Caparo founder Lord Paul and CEO Hon. Angad Paul in London. A similar success story after a 2015 trade mission was announced on May 29 when Italian manufacturer PivaGroup said it would invest $6.4 million and create more than 120 jobs in Ste. Genevieve at its first manufacturing facility in the U.S. Caparo is a diversified global operation comprised of businesses that supply steel and niche engineering products to a number of industries, including automotive, construction, aerospace, steel conversion and distribution, general engineering and medical, among others. The company generates more than $1.5 billion in revenue and has more than 60 sites throughout the world. Caparo’s seven manufacturing facilities in North America include one in Gerald, Mo., where it produces and fabricates carbon steel welded tube and pipe products commonly used in construction, agriculture, transportation, and engineering products. This expansion also includes the renovation of the Missouri Theater building, the last of Grand Center’s historic buildings to be rehabbed. Along with Lawrence Group CEO Steve Smith, Caparo will invest in the overall development of the facility. The multi-use development is expected to be the future site of a 145-room boutique hotel, a full-service restaurant, two 3,000-square- foot banquet rooms and separate meeting facilities, a ground-floor coffee shop, a bakery and yogurt store, and a 150-vehicle parking lot. This development is expected to create more than 200 additional jobs in the area. Once complete in Spring 2017, Caparo’s Bull Moose Industries intends to occupy 25,000 square-feet of the newly remodeled space for its divisional headquarters. “The St. Louis Regional Chamber worked collaboratively with our economic development partners on this project. The investment in this historic building is an anchor for future development and growth in Grand Center,” said Joe Reagan, President and CEO of the St. Louis Regional Chamber. Representing approximately one-third of Caparo’s overall revenue, its North American business operates under the Bull Moose Industries flag. Bull Moose, which has had its headquarters in the St. Louis metro area since its founding in 1962, employs approximately 80 people in the area. Bull Moose Industries combines a diversified manufacturing base with strong engineering expertise, helping a wide spectrum of customers overcome challenges in product development, cost control, and performance factors. To assist Caparo with its expansion, the Missouri Department of Economic Development has offered a strategic economic incentive package that the company can receive if it meets strict job creation and investment criteria. The City of St. Louis and the St. Louis Regional Chamber also are involved with the company’s expansion.
Role of Soil Biology in Improving Soil Quality
Presented by Kristine Nichols, Ph.D., Soil Microbiologist, USDA Agricultural Research Service Soil as the heart of the farming ecosystem is driven by biological activities to increase soil organic matter, which represents a small percentage of the soil by weight, but controls over 90% of the soil functions. This presentation introduces viewers to the concepts of 1) rhizosphere biology, the area immediately surrounding the plant root with the highest concentration of microbiological activity; 2) soil "livestock" consisting of bacteria, fungi, nematodes, protozoa and microarthropods and representing the greatest concentration of biomass anywhere on the planet; 3) glomalin, a biological glue that holds soil together and improves soil aggregation; and 4) building soil biota to improve soil quality, increase nutrient cycling, and long term sustainability using cover crops, no-till, and other sustainable farming practices. Theoretical education: This chronic unemployment is in some quarters attributed to the system of education prevailing in our country. Our education is too theoretical. It turns too many arts graduates and too few engineers. To make up for this deficiency Government has opened several technological institutes in different parts of India. However, this attempt, good as it is, will not solve the problem of unemployment. Already there are more technically trained men than there is employment for them. 2. Lack of full employment in industries: In the industrial segment, there is the same lack of full employment. There are not many mills and factories and the number of men employed in them is not large. Even the mills and factories that we have do not work to their maximum capacity either for lack of requisite machinery or for lack of adequate supply of materials. 3. Lack of alternative opportunities for agricultural workers: In the rural India, the picture is equally discouraging. Agriculture is the principal occupation of the majority of rural population. However, agriculture keeps the cultivators engaged for a limited part of the year. For many months every year the agriculturist remain idle and lives miserably. 4. Poor condition of cottage industries: In villages, unemployment is due to lack of cottage industries. The cottage industries are in a winding state. They give whole-time occupation to only a fraction of the people who depend on them. 5. Other factors: The other factors that are responsible for unemployment in India are: Excessive burden of population on cultivation; Rapidly increasing population; Low productivity in agriculture sector; Defective economic planning, and Large-scale production and mechanization. Solution Every country is trying to solve the unemployment problem in her own way. 1. Increase in national wealth through industrialization: The real remedy lies in an addition to the national wealth, in increased production of industrial goods. If there are more industries, there will be more avenues for employment, particularly for men and women with professional and technological training. Already the River valley projects and power-plant projects are finding employment for a large number of men. It is only in a rapid industrialization of the country that we have a key to the solution of our economic problem. If more and more industries are established and more commodities are produced, there will be vacancies not merely for technically trained university men but also for laborers – skilled and unskilled. If we have more wealth, we shall be able to pay our doctors better, we shall require more banks, more schools and colleges and more universities. Thus, rapid industrialization alone opens up new avenues for the educated people for the urban areas as also for mill and factory hands. If the unemployment of the rural people is to be tackled, emphasis should also be laid on the revival of cottage industries. This will give part-time occupation to agriculturists and relieve the poor people who depend on these small decaying industries such as weaving, making carpets and mats or utensils of ball-metal. The Government alone can help them with loan and find a market for their goods. If these industries are revived, the rural people will live in happiness and peace. 2. Establishment of Vocational and Technical training institutes: The government should open Technical and Vocational colleges and manual labor should be made compulsory. Big factories should be attached to these colleges. More stress is to be given to practical side. 3. Increased investment in heavy industries: Investment in heavy and basic industries and consumer goods industries should be increased to provide more employment with more production. 4. Revival of cottage and small scale industries: Cottage and small scale industries should be developed. Subsidies and other incentives should be given to private sector. 5. Modernization of agriculture: Modernization and mechanization of agriculture should be done. Wastelands should be utilized. 7. Self-employment should be encouraged: Government should take initiatives to encourage self-employment. Young entrepreneurs should be assisted with hassle free loans. The unemployed are a great worry to the Government. Government tried to give some relief to unemployed people, especially to ex-Service men, by opening Employment Exchanges, which are machinery for finding suitable employment for young men and women. Some Universities, too, have employment boards to help their graduates (and under graduates) to secure employment. Nevertheless, these are no complete remedy. They may have found Employment for some meritorious people.

The design team was given the task of reimaging the existing 1.5 million-square-foot, four-story and nine-story office buildings. The project was designed as a corporate headquarters in the 1970s. LPA provided new landscaping, entries, signage and atrium interiors to reposition the project for better tenant flexibility and identity. Safer Roads Ottawa and the Ottawa Police Service have launched a new cyclist detection system on the O’Connor bike lanes at the corner of Waverley. Safer Roads Ottawa engaged with SmartCone Technologies Incorporated, a local start-up company in Stittsville, to implement their innovative prototype sensor technology on O’Connor Street. How does it work: • The cameras capture the motion of the cyclists approaching the intersection • The information is sent to a computer stored in a protected casing on each hydro pole • The computer then sends a radio signal to each of the LED lights • LED lights flash as an alert to motorists. The goal is for the SmartCone system to accurately detect cyclists approaching the un-signalized intersection of Waverley and O’Connor and to trigger a series of nine individual LED lights located on both sides of the intersection. This makes the bike lanes safer for cyclists and warns motorists that cyclists are approaching. The system provides an additional level of warning to drivers turning left from O’Connor onto Waverley or who were proceeding from the west side of Waverley across O’Connor.

Garada - SAR Formation Flying Satellite Coverage 2
Garada, funded by the Australian Space Research Program (ASRP), is a collaborative space engineering research project at the Australian Centre for Space Engineering Research (ACSER). Garada's primary mission is focusing on measuring the moisture in Australia's soils - for environmental protection, agriculture, land use planning, meteorology, ecology, mining and prediction of dust conditions. Using L-band radar, it will also measure forest conditions and flooding events. View the Finding Australia's Invisible Resource report produced by the Garada project explaining the Design of a National Environmental Monitoring Capability. Industry studies have identified urgent shortfalls in Australia's access to medium resolution optical and L-Band SAR data. There are currently no L-Band satellites and only two are planned by other countries in the years ahead. The Garada project aims not only to help fill the gap with a design that uses high technology to achieve significant cost reduction but to build some of the essential supporting satellite navigation hardware. The Garada project includes a study of the orbits and ground station design for Antarctic Groundstation (AG), a proposal for a ground station at an Australian Antarctic base to downlink data from polar orbiting satellites including Garada. AG relies on Antarctic Broadband (AB) to relay the data back to the Australian mainland. AG will double the downlink capacity of all existing and planned polar orbiting satellites that rely on the Norwegian ground station at Svalbard. In collaboration with prominent industry partners, the UNSW-led project will also identify preliminary industrialisation options, both Australian and international, for the development of the low cost L-Band SAR and AG. Garada project will boost Australia's space capabilities in the niche of small satellites and help develop the case for an Antarctic polar ground station that will improve the data return from all polar orbiting satellites.

Produced in 1957 by the American Road Builders Association, “We’ll Take the High Road” is presented as a public service announcement, the films touts the ever-increasing number of cars on the nation’s roads and how builders are moving to meet an increasing need for more roads and highways. Because the existing roads were not originally engineered for safety or the number of cars using them, President Dwight D. Eisenhower (shown at mark 02:05) signed the National Interstate and Defense Highways Act in June 1956, when signed the bill into law. It authorized $25 billion for the construction of 41,000 miles of an Interstate Highway System and was the largest public works project in American history at the time. As a result, the Interstate Highway System was soon developed and Federal Highway Administrator Bertrum D. Tallamy explains, starting at mark 02:53, how the proposed system will work. (Began in 1956, the system had a total length of 47,856 miles as of 2013). Presented as part of a “town meeting” skit beginning at mark 05:15, the film launches into a detailed explanation of what would officially be known as the “Dwight D. Detroit students explore heavy machinery apprenticeship
http://www.hantzfoundation.org The Hantz Foundation gave the opportunity for the students at Southeastern High School in Detroit, Michigan to learn if they are interested in operating heavy machinery. Not everyone wants to go to college, so we brought in a couple of machines so the kids could start thinking about an apprenticeship. There are a couple of great apprenticeship programs already set up in the marketplace, and we’re trying to get the kids interested enough to apply for apprenticeships so they have a new career path. We are showing them that they can actually operate the equipment - something they’ve never thought about before. Once you learn how to run an excavator, loader, dozer, skidster it’s an opportunity to get a job anywhere. We put an emphasis on college and career readiness, but we focus on just college readiness. This is an opportunity for career readiness and giving them the new focus of - you can actually do this and get paid while you’re in school, and this is a very valuable trade that they can take with them across the country. We really like this choice as a jumping off point for some kids at Southeastern High school who want good work and good pay and want to avoid taking on a lot of debt after graduation. Other schools don’t have these opportunities to explore other avenues and to see them get excited about this is great. This is unique to our area, there are many schools in Detroit that have vocational training, but in our area they don’t get this opportunity to practice and see different trades. If kids go through the experience and like it, we wanted to get their contact information so we can get them signed up for the apprenticeship program and we had 100% sign up rate. The kids liked working with the high-lows because it reminded them of a video game.

Project type: Environmental and Land Use: Longview Farms Master Plan Description: Longview Farms is a subdivision in Lee's Summit, MO with a historical heritage linked to original Longview Farms built in the early 1900's by R.A. Long. Although the subdivision was complete, the challenge was that there was no master plan in place. The job was to create a Master Plan and carry it forward. Visualizations Produced: First, an analysis of the existing conditions, topology, hydrology and utility were mapped and further analyzed. From the onsite analysis an overlay of the new Master Plan was generated for the common areas, streetscapes, and recreational areas. Finally, a Master Plan was developed that phased in the new infrastructure as well as replaced dated elements over an 8 year period. A concept was also generated for development's entry monuments. The Master Plan was then used as a presentation tool to the community to raise the funding necessary to implement the plan. The community voted and approved an assessment fee that meets the budget requirements of the Master Plan. Take A Narrated Tour Of This Impressive Waterfowl Property With Floodable Corn For Sale

Monetizing Soil Health
Debbie Reed discusses research analysis of how to challenge existing paradigms in the water quality and carbon markets and how to prioritize soil health and make it a profitable cause. She shares where innovative project financing can lead to possible avenues for developing soil health credits to trade in a new marketplace. Throughout her speech, Reed highlights several scenarios in which soil health might be leveraged as a mitigating tool to reduce costs for various public and private spending projects. For example, the United States Army Corp of Engineers spends $1.3 billion a year dredging shipping lanes in waterways around the country. Bringing scientific data together about soil health practices reducing siltation can make agricultural best management practices a more attractive market. With the statistics of proactive versus reactive costs, hopefully federal funding can be redirected to support soil health causes. The private sector may also be worth pursuing for soil health funding as studies suggest that wind and water erosion cost the economy $43 to $59 billion every year. Agribusinesses that move product by barge are another potential investment source for siltation-reduction improvements. Reed thinks that water quality with regulatory load requirements might benefit soil health practitioners if a proper measurements and trades could be offered. For instance, a municipality could fund a group of farmers’ cover crop costs if it meant their water treatment plant received fewer fines on heavier-load times. What is crucial for moving forward is how and in what ways can soil be quantified as an asset. Reed suggests that uniformly-accepted quantification of soil health assets is a necessity to ensure the future of these types of market trades. Quantification tools must be integrated and user-friendly across multiple markets at a much greater scale. The simpler and more transparent the platforms for measurement and verification the better for the overall benefit of the soil health community. Tools for quantification that aren’t transparent cannot insure robustness to government agencies and in turn face issues convincing buyers. Another important aspect that can be borrowed from carbon markets is credit stacking. The ability to stack or bundle credits in carbon, water quality, etc., has proven to be extremely valuable in the market place. For instance, if an organization can buy credits that cover their water quality, carbon, and soil health credits in the same transaction, they would be more likely to do so. Debbie Reed is the Executive Director of the Coalition on Agricultural Greenhouse Gases (C-AGG), the leading US multi-stakeholder organization focused on creating voluntary, sustainable, incentive-based agriculture and climate change solutions for farmers, ranchers, and society. C-AGG catalyzes change by overcoming challenges and sharing successes to help farmers and ranchers become more efficient, profitable, productive, and sustainable. Ms. Reed is also the Director of DRD Associates LLC, an organization that provides technical and strategic support to organizations in the realm of sustainable food and agriculture. Debbie previously worked at the White House Council on Environmental Quality as the Director of Legislative Affair and Agricultural Policy, White House Climate Change Task Force, and in the U.S. Senate, as Senior Staff on natural resources and agricultural issues for U.S. Senator Robert Kerrey of Nebraska. She has also worked in the USDA as a special assistant to the Deputy Under Secretary for Research, Education, and Economics and as a special assistant the the Administrator of the Agricultural Research Service. Reed has also worked for the WIC Supplemental Feeding program and for various nonprofit organizations dedicated to promoting human nutrition policies. Project type: Environmental and Land Use: Longview Farms Master Plan Description: Longview Farms is a subdivision in Lee's Summit, MO with a historical heritage linked to original Longview Farms built in the early 1900's by R.A. Long. Although the subdivision was complete, the challenge was that there was no master plan in place. The job was to create a Master Plan and carry it forward. Visualizations Produced: First, an analysis of the existing conditions, topology, hydrology and utility were mapped and further analyzed. From the onsite analysis an overlay of the new Master Plan was generated for the common areas, streetscapes, and recreational areas. Finally, a Master Plan was developed that phased in the new infrastructure as well as replaced dated elements over an 8 year period. A concept was also generated for development's entry monuments. The Master Plan was then used as a presentation tool to the community to raise the funding necessary to implement the plan. The community voted and approved an assessment fee that meets the budget requirements of the Master Plan. 4 Big Impacts to Drones from the 2018 FAA Reauthorization Act
The FAA Reauthorization Act of 2018 was signed into law by President Trump on Friday, October 5th. This law contained many controversial and historic changes for our country regarding drones. It is no exaggeration to say that its impact will be felt for decades to come. In this video I explain those four major changes. Big change #1: It provides 5 years of funding for the FAA, through 2023. Learn why this is unusual and important in the video. Big change #2: Expansion and maturity of LAANC. LAANC is Low Altitude Authorization and Notification Capability. It is the IT & regulatory infrastructure that provides the ability of individual UAS operators to request authorization to fly in controlled airspace (e.g., near airports) and quickly receive FAA authorization to fly. Think minutes instead of weeks or months. Huge difference! It has even more implications with the 2018 law. Watch to learn more. Big change #3: Removal of the 336 Exemption. To translate: hobby and recreational drone flyers (and old-school radio control pilots) no longer have immunity or exemption from the FAA. This is the most controversial change in the 2018 law. It recognizes the reality that our modern consumer drones are more aircraft than toys. I'm happy to see this change, even as someone who learned a lot about aerospace engineering by building and flying balsa wood R/C airplanes. In the video I explain more profound changes that will happen as a result of this one change. Big change #4: Government entities are allowed to conduct counter-UAS activities. This was previously illegal for everyone. It was even illegal for a company *to advertise* they were working on this capability because it was treated the same (legally) as advertising for the ability to hijack an airliner. That alone was a federal offense! Watch the video to learn what this means over the next 5 years. Those are four historic and revolutionary changes in the 2018 FAA Reauthorization. Our world is going to look a lot different in the next five years as drones become a major part of our economy and national infrastructure.
