Acupressure Point LI4 LI 4, which stands for “Large Intestine 4”, is an extremely useful acupressure point that is extensively used to treat chronic pain, acute stress and various types of diseases along with treatment for high blood pressure. This point is situated in the webbing between the forefinger and the thumb… right in the middle as you see here. It calms and balances blood flow throughout the body and clears stagnation. As an added benefit, it also boosts your immunity. The most effective way to apply pressure to LI 4 is to slide your thumb along the webbing until you reach the junction of the thumb and index finger bones. How to apply acupressure? Begin by moving your thumb in a small circular rubbing motion over LI 4 for a few seconds. Then you can apply gentle to moderate thumb pressure depending on how sensitive the area feels. If there is any pain, it should be a “good hurt,” not severe or uncomfortable. You can hold the point as long as you are comfortable, up to several minutes. I typically suggest about 20-30 seconds, then take a few second break and then repeat as often as you’d like. G20 The G20 is below the base of your skull, in the hollows on both sides of the neck, between the two vertical neck muscles. Use your thumbs, fingers, or knuckles to gradually apply pressure into the hollows of your skull. Close your eyes as you tilt your head back slowly. Take long, slow deep breaths as you hold for two to three minutes. Direct the pressure slowly and firmly into the center of your head. Other Acupressure Points Now, there are lots of other acupressure points -- on your feet, arms, legs, and so forth. I'm using Dr.Batmangalidj's water cure with UNREFINED sea salt, it has to say unrefined because there's refined sea salt on the market. If you're unsure call the salt distributor or email the company. I was using refined sea salt for years until a few weeks ago, thinking it was healthier, it's not. It can raise your blood pressure because it has it's magnesium and essential trace minerals removed. I'm taking 400 mg of magnesium, I'm using citrate, but plan on switching to transdermal type by ancient minerals. I'm taking a low potassium and will increase it slowly over a few weeks. High blood pressure and heart disease are closely connected. Moderate to high blood pressure significantly increases the load on the left side of the heart. Arterioles are often diseased or constricted, which increases resistance to blood flow. When this happens, the heart has to work much more to pump blood into the arterial system including the aorta. When any muscle is overused, it tends to increase in size and bulk. The heart muscles react the same way. An enlarged heart is a sign of trouble. Heart enlargement can be detected in several ways. A chest x-ray can reveal it. So can an electrocardiogram or even a physical examination. In many high blood pressure patients, the walls of the left ventricle thicken. This increases the workload on the heart. Eventually, the heart falters and the left side of the heart no longer pumps blood adequately. When this happens, major organs and tissues of the body are denied sufficient blood supply. The affected person becomes lethargic and weak. Because of the higher pressure in the left ventricle, blood from the lungs cannot drain into the top compartment of the heart (the atrium). As a result, the lung tissues get congested which brings on bouts of breathlessness and coughs. The patient may have a dry cough or even frothy phlegm with blood stains in it. This is a very scary experience to the sufferer and onlookers. In an acute attack, it seems to the patient that he or she is choking to death. Breathlessness due to heart problems may be first noticed during prolonged physical exertion. If the condition has progressed further, breathlessness may occur even while resting. This is a serious situation and needs to be tacked immediately. If this damage worsens, the right side of the heart will be affected as well. When pressure builds up in the right atrium, it will be difficult for veins to drain blood into it. When the heart's condition deteriorates to this stage, the external jugular veins may become enlarged and more prominent. These veins are anyway close to the skin and may be visible even in healthy adults, but stress on the heart can increase their protrusion. There are several other symptoms of right side heart failure. They include an enlarged liver, swollen ankles and feet, loss of appetite, swollen abdomen and lower urine flow. High blood pressure and heart disease frequently have a cause and effect relationship. Making necessary lifestyle changes can help combat both.

Specifically, I wanted to talk about how it can raise your blood pressure. By better understanding the effects of salt on your blood pressure, you may be better able to manage that aspect of your health moving forward. Before I get started, I want to mention that salt has many roles in the human body and I'm going to specifically focus on blood pressure in this lecture. In a nutshell, sodium (or Na+), which I'll just refer to as salt ( NaCl) for now, helps your kidneys retain water. This serves a very essential function to our overall health and well being. The salt circulating in our bloodstream, and in the rest of our body, helps keep our circulatory system filled and allows the heart to do its job of delivering oxygen around the body. It is the job of your kidneys to regulate the amount of salt in your circulatory system. If total salt goes up, your kidneys will filter more out. If total salt goes down, those filters will close and your body will try to retain salt. This affects your blood pressure directly because the water "follows" the salt if you will. It does this through a physical process called osmosis. According to the American Heart Association, we require about 1500 mgs of salt per day. As Americans, we consume about 3,400 mg/day, more than twice what we need. Furthermore, 75% of the salt we consume comes from processed food and restaurant, and less than 25% from what we add ourselves. It's also worth noting that some people are more sensitive to salt intake than others. So if you have no heart or kidney problems, you're most likely able to filter out the excess salt. However, if you have heart or kidney issues, or you are particularly sensitive, then the excess salt can start causing problems and potentially damage some of your organ systems. Salt has several names including sodium, Na, Na+, NaCl, KCl and low sodium. Unsalted, no salt added, sodium free are terms you should look for on a nutrition facts label. Elevated sodium levels are associated with heart disease, heart attack, myocardial infarction, CAD or coronary artery disease, embolisms and blood clots, brain disease, stroke, dementia, vascular disease, atherosclerosis, arteriosclerosis, arteriostenosis, kidney disease, kidney failure, osteoporosis, stomach cancer, kidney stones and headaches. Symptoms of too much salt include dehydration, bloating, puffiness, weight gain, increased thirst, and excessive thirst. There are many ways to lower, decrease salt intake. One example is DASH diet or dietary approaches to stop hypertension (high blood pressure).
