The idea that cancer cells feed on sugar is correct, however ALL cells are fed by sugar. Cancerous cells cannot be starved by limiting intake of sugar. Starving cancer is simply a misunderstanding of basic physiology! Our body runs on carbohydrates, simple sugars to be exact. This is the preferred fuel for the body. In times of insufficient carbohydrate intake, even in a fasting situation, the body still keeps the blood sugar stable! The cells are fed by the blood, so there's actually no way of starving the cells from sugar. If we eat a high fat diet on the other hand, the excess fat in the bloodstream will now interfere with regulation of blood sugar by insulin and other hormones and as a result our metabolism becomes unstable. Keep a steady intake of carbohydrates, preferably in the form of simple sugars from fruit, at all times for optimum health. Studies have shown time and time again that as the intake of fat goes above 10-20% of total calories, health decline is inevitable. Protein is also best kept below 10% of calories. We're essentially looking at a macronutrient ratio of about 80/10/10, where the majority of our calories come from carbohydrate! What are the causes of hypoglycaemia in those with diabetes? Hypoglycaemia is one of the most important and dangerous complication for those who are on treatment for diabetes. The most common cause is the drug itself. Drugs like sulfonylureas which is known as glimipride, gliclacide, gliplizide, glibenclamide, all these drugs stimulate insulin continuously so they are likely to cause sugar levels to go down. Second drugs are insulin. So the reasons to cause sugar levels to go down, number 1 is reduced food intake. It is very common as the patient take the medicine and forget to eat normally especially in those who are taking insulin and sulfonylureas. The other drugs like metformin or PP4 inhibitors and to some extent glitazones usually don’t contribute to low glucose directly. To some extent glp-1 analogues can bring down sugar levels which are taken in the form of injection. Also there are drugs like ripaglinide which are short acting drugs which can also bring down the sugar levels. So drugs are the most common cause and second is reduced food intake or a mismatch between the drug and the food can cause the sugar levels to go down. What are the other causes? One is any dysfunction of the liver. Liver is the store house of glycogen and important source of immediate release of glucose. Any liver disease like hepatitis or alcoholic liver disease or excessive alcohol intake can itself bring down the sugar levels drastically and cause hypoglycaemia. Second reason is that the liver can get damaged because of cancer or cirrhosis which can occur in those with excessive fat deposit which is known as non-alcoholic fatty liver disease where the liver is destroyed or damaged and therefore the sugar levels come down. Third cause which is the most common is renal dysfunction. Most commonly kidney damage will cause the insulin levels to be retained in the body because it is not utilised and metabolised. So whenever we see a patient with low glucose levels we should check for the liver function and the kidney function. There are other low causes for the low glucose especially those who are taking some antibiotics like gatifloxacin sometimes hydroxychloroquine, anti malarial drugs. We also see in patients who have septicaemia and a severe infection to get their blood sugar down. One of the other important and life threatening cause is adrenal dysfunction which can be in the form of hypopituitarism i.e. the pituitary is not functioning well and the adrenal gland which is situated above the kidney is not functioning. Primary or secondary adrenal insufficiency can cause hypoglycaemia. Another rare cause for hypothyroidism is severe hypothyroidism where the body’s appetite and metabolism is very low. In any individual we need to find out the cause before we actually go for appropriate treatment. In an emergency we need to give some glucose but we need to find out the cause which can be a imbalance in food intake, liver damage, kidney damage, severe infection, adrenal insufficiency either primary or secondary and sometimes severe hypothyroidism.

From your brain to your immune system to your taste buds, the negative effects of sugar on physical health are high. 1. Brain (0:45) So, what does sugar do to your brain? Sugar activates the reward centers in your brain in the same way as drugs like heroin and cocaine. Sugar is highly addictive and these reward driven feedback loops lead to cravings and addiction in much the same way. This is damaging to your brain, and in fact, Alzheimer’s disease and age onset dementia are now being dubbed type 3 diabetes, due to them being a glucose-insulin resistance and sugar disease in your brain. 2. Energy (2:04) What happens when you eat too much sugar? You get a massive rise in blood sugar levels, followed by a crash in energy and a craving for more sugar to boost you back up again. This vicious cycle is one of the main reasons you may eat more sugar. If you control your blood sugar levels evenly throughout the day, your energy would be stable, and you wouldn’t need the sugary ‘pick-me-up’ to boost your energy. 3. Immune System (3:29) Increased levels of sugar make your immune system act like it’s drunk. Your cells are tired, lethargic, and do not detect pathogens. This leads to a low immunity level and an increased likeliness of sickness. In fact, lack of sleep and a high sugar diet is the quickest way to fall ill. Avoiding high sugar foods will make sure your immune system is working properly and you better protect yourself from illness and disease. 4. Fat Cells (4:11) High sugar foods don't keep you full, and even though they’re calorie dense, they're not satiating. You can put away a bag of skittles or a bar of chocolate and feel hungry again within 20 minutes. This leads to you eating more to curb your hunger and therefore increasing the number of calories you eat each day. This pattern over a long period will lead to fat gain and increase the negative effects of sugar on your body. 5. Taste buds (5:17) A high sugar diet will lead to a change in the perceived sweetness of foods on your taste buds. This can occur even if your sugar intake is from sugar substitutes, like diet sodas. Your taste buds get so used to being bombarded with sweetness that they are no longer as receptive to a sugary taste. You’ll need more sugar to get the same level of sweet taste. When you move away from a high sugar diet, your taste buds re-calibrate, and you’ll start to appreciate the good flavors of healthier food. 6. Liver (6:44) Your liver is your body’s main metabolic organ, and it stores sugar to be released when we need it. Your liver converts fructose sugar to fat. In today’s mass production of food, most fructose is being artificially added to processed foods in the form of high fructose corn syrup. This fructose storage can lead to ‘fatty liver’, where the liver cells actually get replaced by fat cells. Your liver will not function properly, meaning it doesn’t process toxins and doesn’t metabolize fat. 7. Cancer (8:13) Sugar feeds cancer and fuels the growth of tumors in the body. With the fuel it needs to grow, and the reduction in your immune system (also caused by sugar), you’re setting up a perfect environment for cancer. Low sugar and low carb diets are being used and researched as a way of naturally reducing tumor size in cancer sufferers. Summary (9:22) Excess sugar has negative impacts right throughout your body. That's not to say you can never eat something sweet. The lesson here is to avoid things like candy, sodas, high sugar fruit juices, etc. and stick with things like whole fruit. There is “nutritional ketosis” which is the ketogenic diet best suited for athletes and people wanting a healthier fat based diet to lose weight. It’s also great for controlling your appetite and is very similar to a Paleo diet. Nutritional ketosis consists of good fats, animal protein and lots of fresh, green food. Some fruit and grains are allowed but kept to a minimum. You want elevated ketones and lower blood sugar. The idea is to be alternating between both as fuel for your metabolism. The next level of the ketogenic diet is medical ketosis. This is for someone with cancer or epilepsy. Medical ketosis requires a stricter program and tighter control over your carbohydrate intake. Fruit and grains are initially eliminated altogether. The idea of medical ketosis is to control glucose and use ketones as the primary fuel. This level of the ketogenic diet is much harder to maintain but if you’re using it as a treatment for cancer, there is no better motivator when it comes to diet. Medical ketosis requires blood sugar levels around 70 and ketones above 4. This creates a glucose ketone index of around 1, which is the so called zone in where cancer cells are starving to death. It doesn’t matter if your treatment is chemo, radiation, herbs, nutrition or other therapies. Once you weaken cancer cells through basic starvation, it’s easier to eradicate them altogether when your chosen method of treatment. These days, everyone is on some “fad” diet that’s usually some kind of an “extreme” eating plan. They might be on a very high protein diet or high fat diet or intermittent fasting diet or low carb diet or no-carb ketogenic diet or something similar. And the end result is always that people canNOT sustain this type of eating long-term. They feel deprived, they get frustrated, they have low energy, they lose will power… which ends up causing them to feel like crap, give up and gain all the weight back. Not only is this bad for your physically - but it really kills you emotionally. Hard To Exercise & Build Muscle I think one of the most important ingredients for life-long health and better hormones is exercise. This includes BOTH aerobic (such as walking) and anaerobic (such as lifting weights). However, it’s very hard to put in the effort, or have energy or have a good, muscular workout if you’re on low carbs all the time. It’s impossible. You’ll quickly lose strength and muscle. Screws Up Your Hormones Another problem is that long term low carb diets decreases thyroid production - which as you know, is one of the keys for a faster metabolism. And this negatively affects women more than men. Also, low carb diets increase cortisol - your stress hormone. For men, this causes an immediate decrease and shut down in testosterone… which, means lower libido, happiness and muscle loss. Lack Of FIber Most people lack fiber in their diets as it is. Low carb diets dramatically lowers your fiber and thus, reduces bowel movements, causes constipation and is the leading cause of colon cancer. Which by the way, is increasing these days. Lack Of Vitamins, Minerals & Antioxidants The other problem with eliminating most carbohydrates is the lack of key nutrients, vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. Low or no fruits, vegetables, healthy carbs and grains causes this and no amount of multivitamin supplements can replace what’s naturally found in nature, in the correct ratios. I mean, it’s bad enough that the foods are already lacking in nutrients these days, but by eliminating carbs guarantees a massive deficiency. Replacing Carbs With the Wrong Foods The other problem I see is that people are replacing carbohydrates with the wrong foods -- higher proteins and bad, unhealthy fats. Increase In Cravings Finally, the low carb diets tend to cause cravings, especially for sugar. Your brain and muscles like glucose. Too big of a drop in blood sugar causes an increase in hunger and appetite. How To Do It Correctly One thing I want to make clear is that I’m NOT against lowering your carbohydrates, I just don’t believe in “low” carb diets. To keep it simple, if you want to lower your carbs, follow an “isocaloric” diet. That means ⅓ of your calories come from carbs, protein and fats. Super easy to follow. For carbs, eat lower glycemic/load carbs - such as vegetables, yams, sweet potatoes, squash, white rice (yes, NOT brown) and some fruits that are in season. Make sure you have some fiber with all meals, as well as healthy fats -- such as olive, macadamia nut, coconut, fish and raw nuts and seeds (no cashews or peanuts). And then some healthy proteins such as pastured eggs, collagen, grass fed beef, salmon and small amounts of free range chicken. That’s it. And if you’re really concerned about your blood sugar levels because your blood test showed that it’s elevated or your want to prevent or reverse diabetes, then add in specific herbs, vitamins and minerals that are clinically proven to help lower your blood sugar AND most importantly, improve insulin sensitivity. Just take these supplements with all of your carb meals - that’s it. Very simple and easy to follow. You’ll feel great and look younger. And it won’t feel like “work”, nor will be feel deprived. Best of all, you can enjoy your food - including when you go out to eat. How dogs can sniff out diabetes
A chemical found in our breath could provide a flag to warn of dangerously-low blood sugar levels in patients with type 1 diabetes, according to new research the University of Cambridge. The finding, published today in the journal Diabetes Care, could explain why some dogs can be trained to spot the warning signs in patients. The researchers found that levels of the chemical isoprene rose significantly at hypoglycaemia – in some cases almost doubling. They believe that dogs may be sensitive to the presence of isoprene, and suggest that it may be possible to develop new detectors that can identify elevated levels of isoprene in patients at risk.

Researchers found that eating a high glycemic index diet -- that's a diet with a lot of refined starches and carbohydrates and of course sugars -- increased the risk of breast cancer in post menopausal women, as high as 87 percent, for women who were also sedentary and had a history of prescription hormone replacement use. Fast forward to 2011... We have looked beyond the glycemic index. Now it's known to be more about controlling your insulin levels. Because common foods such as apple juice, pasta and chocolate (my favorite) may have a low glycemic index, but they are still high in carbohydrates and can spike your insulin levels. So the common phrase, "sugar feeds cancer" may seem straight forward, but the reality of sugar's impact is a bit more complex. Because although the glycemic index is a useful tool in guiding someone with cancer toward a healthier diet, it does not give a complete and accurate picture because the glycemic index of a sugary food can be lower than that of a starchy food. That's why insulin levels are a more accurate predictor. For example, a study presented in 2000 at the Annual meeting of American Society of Clinical Oncology reported on 535 breast cancer patients who were followed for ten years. Not only were the breast cancer patients with the highest levels of insulin eight times more likely to die of their disease, researchers also found that insulin levels in the blood may predict whether a woman's breast cancer will recur after treatment. Here again, the women with the highest levels of insulin were four times more likely to have recurrences. Furthermore, of those women in the study who were obese (obesity being another known factor that increases the risk of recurrence) it was also concluded that obesity alone could not completely explain the link between insulin and reduced cancer survival. The hypothesis being that insulin can spur the growth of both normal and cancerous cells in the breast. It is now accepted as an indisputable fact that getting your insulin levels back to normal is one of the most powerful things you can do to improve your health and lower your risk of cancer. So it's imperative that cancer survivors lower and maintain their insulin levels. As a side note: The pancreas releases insulin after you eat carbohydrates. This causes the blood sugar to rise. Blood sugar is necessary for life. And it is the job of insulin to make sure your cells receive the right amount. However, insulin also makes our bodies use more carbohydrate as fuel than fat. So a vicious cycle begins because excess carbohydrates not only make you fat, they make you stay fat. Fortunately, you can convince your body to use its stored fats for energy by dramatically decreasing or eliminating grains and sugars from your diet and by getting moderate regular exercise. Lastly, no matter how committed you are, the state of your emotional health is important in all of this. You can be a devoted as a monk to the change you want to make, but it will be a monumental task if you have emotional baggage standing in your way. So along with making it an automatic habit to eat like mother nature designed you to eat, incorporate some form of stress release and relaxation into your life. We're not just looking at how you burn fat. We're not just looking at getting in the best possible shape. There are actually some really good therapeutic applications. In this particular case, I want to spend this video talking about the relationship between ketosis and cancer. So, with me I have Joe Anderson who is a PhD in chemical engineering and an expert in ketosis. You've done a lot of digging in the world of ketosis and cancer. I want to turn the tables over to you to talk about what you've seen, what you've discovered in that world, and get a little discussion going on. Sure. So, there's this idea out there that the ketosis could be therapeutic. If you can get to a certain level of therapy with your ketone levels, it can actually decrease the cancer size. I will say right up front there's a gentlemen down in southern Florida who some of you may know, Dom D'Agostino, whose actually actively doing research in this area. Some of this stuff is coming from him. But, the idea is that cancer is tissue that's growing out of control. Right? Cancer's made up of lots of cells. When it's growing out of control some of the fuel that's fueling that out of control growth can be sugar. The idea is that if you cut sugar out, get into a high level of ketosis, you're going to kill those cells because they don't have any nutrients to thrive on. But, you have to be careful because every cell in that cancer isn't necessarily being fueled by sugar. Some will be fueled by fats, so this doesn't work for every cancer. They seem to indicate that some of the brain cancers, the nasty ones, are responsive to this keto therapy. Then you have some other cancers as well. . The other idea within that is that some of the cancers are responding to the insulin so if you have sugar, sugar is driving your insulin to be elevated, but that elevated insulin may also be helping the cancer grow out of control. So, once again, decrease sugar, decrease the fuel for the cancer cells, but also decrease that insulin response that's causing a response to those cancer cells as well. Right, now cancer is not my world of expertise other than the fact that I lost my father to cancer in February so it's near and dear to me, but I still don't have the breadth of knowledge that a lot of clinicians do in the world of cancer. Can you just describe exactly how a cancer cell works, and how it might feed, and how it might be glycolytic just so that the viewers who don't have an understanding of really how that works in general and how keto could potentially starve that out? Sure. I'm not going to try to pretend I'm' a cancer expert, but I've certainly done some research on this in terms of reading the scientific literature to understand it better, but essentially cancer is a cell that doesn't know when to stop growing and stop dividing. Your cell will grow, grow, grow and then at some point it can divide into a second cell, but that process is well controlled.
