06:28
http://www.firststepreading.com | This video teaches your child how to blend 3 letters together to read Short Vowel A 3 letter words. This video shows your child to use both letter sounds and word families to help him/her blend 3 letters together to read words. Reading 3 Letters words is taught by moving a Consonant closer and closer to Short Vowel A Word Family Endings. Blending sounds to make words is a learning process. The first step of blending is when your child states the correct sounds for the letter characters that are being blended for example the word, "Cat" will often first be read as "C"- "at." With practice your child will learn to further blend the sounds to correctly say "Cat." Your child will learn to read 3 letter Short Vowel A words in the Practice Reading Book. Phase 2 teaching blending

07:48
This is a video clip from the DfES Letters and Sounds Programme (2007) used to teach children to read in many schools. This clip shows children learning how to blend sounds to make CVC words. Sound buttons are shown (dots under each phoneme) to help children discriminate between the individual sounds. Children read the sounds in a word first quite slowly, and then the teacher gets the children to speed up the reading of the individual phonemes - fast enough so that the children can then 'hear' the blend. Children have their own phoneme boards where they get to make up CVC words of their own by combining sound cards.

How to Teach Sight Words | Reading Lessons

02:23
Watch more How to Teach Your Child to Read videos: http://www.howcast.com/videos/460473-How-to-Teach-Sight-Words-Reading-Lessons Hi, my name is Anne Glass. I'm a reading and learning specialist at a private school in New York City, and I work with kindergartners through third graders on reading word study and writing skills. In addition to being a reading specialist and a learning specialist, I am also a parent and today I am going to talk to you about topics in reading. When I teach a reading lesson to young emergent readers, my over arching goal is to make sure they are successful and that means that I have a very specific goal in mind and I keep my goals very manageable. I also don't keep the object of my lesson a secret whether it's a phonic skill or a comprehension skill, or just what were going to make sure that we know from the start what the expectations are. I think across the board in reading instruction it's really important to be explicit with our students about what the context of the lesson is and what the criteria for success are. It's also crucial to provide as often as possible multi sensory methods for teaching early reading skills to the extent that is possible you should always provide opportunities for visual kenistetic and auditory reinforcements when your teaching a new concept, and the final thing is that I always want my students to feel successful at the end. Which means that if I'm asking them to read a text, I'm going to start with a pre review of every concept that they might encounter in that text. Whether they are sight words or phonic concepts were going to be prepared to encounter those concepts within the text and decode successfully with that information.

How to: Phonics Instruction

33:35
Hey guys! It seems like it's been a long time since I posted a normal video but I will have two for you this week! In this video I am talking about phonics instruction. I share with you what worked best with my intervention group last year and the format that I used. Time to get ready to tackle phonics again because the school year is getting closer and closer! I am also introducing my new store and newsletter so make sure you follow the links below to go and check those out. I hope you all find this video really useful and let me know what you think! Teaching letters and sounds is one of my favorite topics to teach in reading. I have compiled a unit of some of my favorite activities to help teach each letter. You can use these activities in both small and whole group! This unit is meant to be hands-on and interactive. In this unit: Full Alphabet A - Z - Anchor letter {using environmental print} - Alphabet vocabulary cards {2 versions} - Vowels come with a medial card build and blend - Kinesthetic and handwriting practice sheet - Font sort - Initial Sound Sort {mats included} - Vowels Come with Medial/Initial Sound Sort {mats Included} - Individual student strips to practice the sound and letter recognition {mats included} - Song to sing and practice the letter & sound - Small group book {vowels come with two versions - initial and medial books} My letter progression is provided in the lesson as well as a description of activities to complete for the week. What Is Phonemic Awareness? | Reading Lessons

01:44
Watch more How to Teach Your Child to Read videos: http://www.howcast.com/videos/460490-What-Is-Phonemic-Awareness-Reading-Lessons Hi. my name is Anne Glass. I'm a reading and learning specialist at a private school in New York City and I work with Kindergarteners through 3rd graders on Reading, Word Study, and Writing Skills. In addition to be a reading specialist and learning specialist, I'm also a parent and today I'm going to talk to you about topics in reading. Phonological or phonemic awareness is a crucial factor which predicts how easily your child will develop early reading skills. It has to do with developing a sensitivity to the sound structure in oral language. At its most sophisticated level, it means phonemic awareness. Phonological awareness is the bigger umbrella which subsumes phonemic awareness. Phonological awareness can refer to noticing the words in a sentence, the syllables in a multi-syllabic word, and phonemic awareness is much more specific to the individual sounds in a single word. We call these individual sounds, phonemes. Phonemic awareness is something that develops over time and can, in fact, be taught and should be taught. Phonemes are the very smallest units of sound in words. For example, in the word bug, there are 3 phonemes. Bu-uh-ga. A child with sophisticated phonemic awareness would be able to substitute the bu- for ha, to get the word, hug, and she will also know that the initial sound changed, but the rest of the word didn't. When children receive explicit instruction in phonemic awareness, including rhyming games and substitution and segmenting tasks with individual phonemes, they are much more successful than their same peers who did not receive similar instruction.
