What is the difference between aspirin, acetaminophen, and ibuprofen?

This week learn about the difference between common over the counter pain relievers Follow us on social media: Twitter: https://twitter.com/OccamAnswers Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/Occams-Answers-1609580059112636/ Reddit: https://www.reddit.com/r/occamsanswers/ Standing in the pain relief aisle of the pharmacy, you may have wondered how there came to be so many different brands offering so many different types of pain relief. Pain relievers, or analgesics, are sorted into three main categories. The largest category are the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, or NSAIDs, including aspirin, ibuprofen, and naproxen. These drugs reduce pain, inflammation, and fever, but as the name suggests, are not steroids, which have a very specific chemical structure. Acetaminophen, or paracetamol as it is known internationally, has no anti-inflammatory properties and therefore is not considered an NSAID. Finally, opioids, including codeine, morphine, and oxycodone, are very potent pain relievers with a high risk of addiction, and are therefore not available over the counter in the United States. Codeine, a relatively weak opioid, is available over the counter in some countries, generally in very small doses and combined with other pain relievers. Aspirin, or acetylsalicylic acid, is the oldest of the modern over-the-counter pain relievers. It was developed in 1897 by chemists at Bayer, which is still one of the world’s leading producers of aspirin. Aspirin was developed as a safer alternative to salicylic acid, which in turn was isolated from the willow tree, a plant known for its pain relieving properties as early as ancient Sumer. While aspirin has been in widespread use since the early 1900s, it wasn’t until 1971 that Sir John Vane discovered how aspirin reduces pain, inflammation, and fever. Like all NSAIDs, aspirin works by stopping the two cyclooxygenase enzymes, COX-1 and COX-2 from producing prostaglandins. Prostaglandins are a group of several different hormones found throughout the body, which cause inflammation, pain, and fever as a natural response to injury or infection. Prostaglandins also play a role in regulating the female reproductive system and protecting the gastrointestinal tract, so while NSAIDs reduce pain, inflammation, and fever, they may also affect the menstrual cycle and cause stomach irritation and ulcers. Aspirin is unique in that it also stops the production of thromboxane, a substance which promotes blood clotting. Therefore, aspirin is the only NSAID that, taken regularly in low doses, can reduce the risk of a blood clot causing a heart attack or stroke. Aspirin is also the only NSAID that has been linked to Reye’s Syndrome, a serious liver disease that may occur in children during or after an infection. Therefore aspirin, and other salicylates like the antacid Pepto-Bismol and the oral treatment Bonjela, should not be given to children during a viral infection like the flu or chickenpox. In an effort to find a safer alternative to aspirin, chemists began to develop other NSAIDs in the 1960s. The first and most popular of these was ibuprofen, first available over-the-counter in the early 1980s and currently marketed as Advil or Motrin in the United States. Another popular NSAID is naproxen, available over the counter as Aleve in the United States since the early 1990s. Different NSAIDs affect the two COX enzymes to differing degrees, and it is thought that those which target primarily the COX-2 enzyme have a lower risk of causing gastrointestinal bleeding and ulcers. Unfortunately, while non-aspirin NSAIDs are safe for children and gentler on the stomach than aspirin, they also carry an increased risk of heart attack and stroke. Acetaminophen, the only modern non-NSAID pain reliever widely available over the counter, was first synthesized in the late 1800s. However, this discovery was largely ignored until two other non-NSAID pain relievers, phenacetin and acetanilide, were shown to have lethal side effects. In the search for a non-toxic alternative, Bernard Brodie and Julius Axelrod discovered that both phenacetin and acetanilide were changed into acetaminophen and other more dangerous compounds within the human body, but that acetaminophen by itself had no toxic properties. Acetaminophen was shown to be an effective pain reliever and fever reducer, and was marketed as Tylenol in the mid 1950s. The primary selling points of acetaminophen are that it carries no risk of causing gastrointestinal bleeding or ulcers, unlike NSAIDs, and that it is safe for children, unlike aspirin. However, acetaminophen has no anti-inflammatory properties, and a relatively small overdose can cause severe liver damage. It is not yet fully understood why acetaminophen works to relieve pain and reduce fever, but it is thought to interact with the COX enzymes in a manner that is more complicated than the NSAID pain relievers.

The substance was first described in chemical literature in 1878. In 1886, Drs. Arnold Cahn and Paul Hepp of France were treating a patient suffering from intestinal parasites. They had been investigating naphthalene for its beneficial effect in the treatment of this problem. When their drug supply ran out, they ordered more from a local pharmacy. An inexperienced pharmacist mistakenly filled the prescription with acetanilide. The physicians found that acetanilide produced marked fever reduction in one of their patients who, along with intestinal parasites, had a febrile disease. As Drs. Cahn and Hepp continued to prescribe acetanilide, they also noticed its analgesic properties. It wasn't until 1899, however, that the relationship between acetaminophen and acetanilide was discovered by Karl Morner of Germany. He learned that acetanilide is metabolized in the body to become acetaminophen. Ten years later, another German physician, Joseph Freiher von Mering, first synthesized acetaminophen. Although his research confirmed that the drug was effective against pain and fever, von Mering recommended extensive investigation into all analgesics and antipyretics. Acetaminophen was not prescribed nor studied any further until 1949 when research on chemically related drugs revived interest in the compound. Modern research techniques and clinical use in England confirmed the effectiveness and safety of acetaminophen as a fever and pain reliever. In the late 1940s, McNeil Laboratories, as the company was then known, had defined as a new product objective an analgesic which would be different, available for marketing and prescription only. At about the same time, James Roth, M.D., a University of Pennsylvania Graduate School of Medicine gastroenterologist, was lecturing throughout the United States about the dangers of aspirin. Subsequently, he began advocating for APAP. Dr. Roth became a pr In the spring of 1955, McNeil introduced TYLENOL Elixir for Children, the company's first single ingredient acetaminophen product. The outstanding success of TYLENOL was attributed to a unique marketing strategy:

ASPIRIN HACKS ON PLANTS and GARDENING: Top 6 Benefits of Aspirin as Rooting Hormone + Others

04:48
The Benefits of ASpirin in Garden and Top 6 proven uses of aspirin in gardening for plants. The Medicine Aspirin, once used to be the most commonly used Non-steroidal Anti-inflammatory and Analgesic – now surprisingly has found to benefit your garden. The Top 5 useful effects of Aspirin in gardening. Aspirin is chemically Acetyl Salicylic Acids and salicylic acid is naturally found in willow bark and many other trees. So, what is the actual concept behind using Aspirin in gardening or farming. Studies have found that the plant hormone salicylic acid is released in tiny amounts when plants are in stress. So this concept has been utilized and many benefits of Aspirin have been proven, which am gonna listout one by one. 1. Aspirin as a Rooting Chemical: Rooting hormones like indole acetic and butyric acid are already discussed in my video on What are rooting hormones – you can checkout that video. Well to improve the success rate of rooting while propagating from cuttings, Simply take a teaspoon of cinnamon powder from your kitchen and add it to 1 litre of lukewarm water and then drop in half a 350mg dispersible aspirin tablet and stir it well. Then dip the cuttings into this solutions for about 30 to 60 minutes and then plant those cuttings. 2. Aspiring Improves Seed Germination: A low dose of aspirin water significantly improves seed germination and in one study the plants treated with the aspirin water had a 100 percent germination rate, while the plants that weren't treated had more inconsistent results. For this drop half a tablet of a 350 mg Aspirin into 1 liter of water and stir well and spray on the sown seeds or soak the seeds in it for few hours before planting them. 3. Aspirin for Plant growth: The University of Rhode Island sprayed plants with an aspirin water solution once every three weeks for the course of an entire growing season. At the end, the plants sprayed with the aspirin solution were found much bigger and had more fruit or flowers than their counterparts. 4. To keep Cut flowers stay fresh: Put a half a tablet of aspirin in a vase with fresh cut flowers from your garden to help them stay fresh longer. 5. Aspiring for Healthy Tomatoes: Spray your tomato saplings or even soak the tomato seeds with the same mixture of water and aspirin, before planting them in the ground for healthier, more disease resistant plants. 6. Aspirin spray also an anti fungal and treats Blight in plants: Blight refers to a specific symptom affecting some plants like tomatoes due to infections by pathogenic microrganisms, leading to rapid and complete chlorosis, browning, then death of plant tissues such as leaves, branches, flowers and fruits. Now Possible Side Effects of Using Aspiring in Garden: - Plants may develop brown spots and appear to have burnt foliage. The best way to protect against this is to spray early in the morning just before sunrise and not under direct hot sun. - Also keep Watching plants for their response to the treatment. Not all plants may be suitable for the aspirin regimen, but it has been shown that eggplants, peppers, tomatoes, and potatoes benefit the most.. Technically, Using aspirin is not an organic solution, however, it is a safe and very inexpensive option that contains far fewer chemicals than the store-bought chemical products. Ibuprofen is used to reduce fever, pain and inflammation caused by arthritis, headache, toothache, back pain, menstrual cramps, or minor injury. Ibuprofen works by blocking the production of prostaglandins, substances that the body releases in response to illness or injury. Prostaglandins cause pain and swelling, or inflammation. They are released in the brain, and they can also cause fever. Ibuprofen can increase your risk of heart attack or stroke, if you use it as a long term addiction or take high doses, or if you have heart disease. Ibuprofen may also cause intestinal bleeding, which can be fatal. It should not be used in the last 3 months of pregnancy. An ibuprofen overdose can damage your stomach or intestines. Long-term ibuprofen use can lead to problems maintaining an erection and medication overuse headaches. USMLE MSK 10: Pharmacology - Arachidonic Acid Pathway and NSAIDS!

Welcome to LY Med, where I go over everything you need to know for the USMLE STEP 1, with new videos every day. Follow along with First Aid, or with my notes which can be found here: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/ces0j7obodsk5k5/AACdW5_22z2kebILxHOwYleDa?dl=0 This video is on MSK pharmacology! Let's dive right into it! Our first pharm topic is on skeletal muscle relaxants like baclofen and cyclobenzaprine. Similar to benzos, these work on GABA receptors to mediate muscle relaxation. Now let's move on to the main topic: the arachidonic acid pathway. The arachidonic acid pathway is a pathway in which your body can release inflammatory cytokines to mediate inflammation. It all starts from the arachidonic acid in your membrane phospholipids. Phospholipase A2 will break that arachidonic acid out and allow it to float freely. Now it has two different pathways it can choose: it can either get worked on by the cyclooxygenase pathway or the leukotriene pathway. Both create products that can work on inflammation, as well as other functions to maintain bodily homeostasis. Drugs that block this pathway include corticosteroids. These are important immunosuppresants because they can block phospholipase A2, the main contributor! Less potent, but more common drugs include NSAIDS. These can block cyclooxygenase. Some important drugs to know are aspirin, celecoxib, and acetaminophen. I'll go over the mechanism as well as the side effects of each!

Examples include quaking aspens, bigtooth aspens, white willows, black willows, crack willows, purple willows, and weeping willows. Step 2: Remove bark Cut into the tree's bark, strip it off, and isolate the inner bark. In spring and summer, the bark can be removed in long continuous strips. Tip If you cannot peel the bark off, scrape off the inner and outer bark using the edge of a sharp knife. Step 3: Make a tea Simmer 2 teaspoons of the inner bark in a cup of water for 10 minutes. Let it cool before drinking. Tip If you cannot make a tea, an option is to chew on the bark. Step 4: Avoid overdosing Drink no more than 4 cups of this tea each day. Overdosing has been known to occur. Did You Know? Aspirin works by reducing the production of pain-triggering hormones called prostaglandins.

Aspirin or Acetylsalicylic Acid: 3D Molecule

00:37
Aspirin, also known as acetylsalicylic acid, is a salicylate medication, often used to treat pain, fever, and inflammation. Aspirin also has an antiplatelet effect by stopping the binding together of platelets and preventing a patch over damaged walls of blood vessels. Aspirin is also used long-term, at low doses, to help prevent heart attacks, strokes, and blood clot formation in people at high risk of developing blood clots. The main side effects of aspirin are gastric ulcers, stomach bleeding, and ringing in the ears, especially with higher doses. While daily aspirin can help prevent a clot-related stroke, it may increase risk of a bleeding stroke (hemorrhagic stroke). In children and adolescents, aspirin is not recommended for flu-like symptoms or viral illnesses, because of the risk of Reye's syndrome. Aspirin is used in the treatment of a number of conditions, including fever, pain, rheumatic fever, and inflammatory diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis, pericarditis, and Kawasaki disease. Lower doses of aspirin have also shown to reduce the risk of death from a heart attack, or the risk of stroke in some circumstances. There is some evidence that aspirin is effective at preventing colorectal cancer, though the mechanisms of this effect are unclear.

#12- Aspirin, Ibuprofen & Acetaminophen are the same Chemicals used for Inactivated Vaccines!

07:52
Aspirin, Ibuprofen, & Acetaminophen are Coal Tar Derivatives, and so are the chemicals used to make vaccines: Phenol comes from Creosote and Formaldehyde comes from Methane and Synthesis Gas, making them extremely toxin compounds related to plastics and butane that do not belong in the human body. These synthetic compounds have powerful effects on the blood flow and the immune system by blocking its reaction to stop natural inflammation. They work as painkillers because they block nerve function so pain cannot be felt, which destroys nerve function both in the CNS and the peripheral nervous system. Acetaminophen is the leading cause of liver failure and hospitalizations. FORMALDEHYDE = a) It’s used to ‘Cross-Link’ proteins to kill bacteria (strep, HIB) for their “In-activated” vaccines, and they use small amounts as a preservative in them. PHENOL = a) It’s used to ‘Blow Up’ host cells to release virus grown inside them = Monkey fetus for polio, Chicken embryo for measles & mumps, and Human fetal cells for HepA. b) It’s used 'Blow up' host cells to release virus particles genetically engineered into them = Yeast cells for HepB & HPV, and Caterpillar ovary cells for HPV & flu. Phenol blocks sensory nerves, blocks motor function, and even Emotional Blocks, so that nothing is interesting nor exciting! = Less than 5% phenol, damages Axons causing Sensory Block. Small amounts of Phenol block nerve sensations, stopping the ability to feel (pain). Over 5% phenol, demyelinates Axons causing Motor Block, leading to death. Larger amounts of Phenol cause Motor Block and stop the heart, hence it’s usage in executions. https://www.youtube.com/user/Alleyesun https://www.trackingvaccinations.com

How to Use Aspirin to Heal a Pimple | Acne Treatment

01:03
Watch more How to Get Rid of Acne videos: http://www.howcast.com/videos/505782-How-to-Use-Aspirin-to-Heal-a-Pimple-Acne-Treatment So aspirin is salicylic acid which is the same ingredient that's found in many over-the-counter pimple preparations. If you want to use salicylic acid on a pimple, this is what you need to do. Crush an aspirin and mix it with about a tablespoon of water until you get a nice thick paste. Then you can apply it to the pimple and leave it there for a few hours or even overnight. The key thing if you're going to do this is make sure that that salicylic acid does not get on normal skin because it's very irritating. So make sure you dot it right on the pimple and nowhere else. I'll be honest with you. If you have a really big pimple, this is not my favorite way of treating it because I see too many people who really irritate their skin by doing this. It's more of a last resort treatment. If possible, the best thing to do is see your dermatologist and have him or her inject some cortisone into the pimple. You'll be amazed how much it will go down in 24 hours.
