Today I'm going to answer the question, is cabbage good for diabetes. True or false: Cabbage is in the same family of vegetables as lettuce. False, although they look very similar cabbage is actually a part of the cruciferous vegetable family. Believe it or not, lettuce part of the daisy family. Now that we have our botany lesson out of the way, let’s take a closer look at cabbage. Cabbage has been cultivated for more than 4,000 years. It has been grown for food (domesticated) for over 2,500 years. I am sure most of you think of a connection of cabbage and the Irish, however the Celts brought cabbage to Europe from Asia around 600 B.C. Cabbage comes in various colors, the most common being green, red and purple. Cabbage leaves can be smooth or crinkled. A cup of cooked cabbage contains only 35 calories. Cabbage contains high amounts of Vitamin C and K, Magnesium, Folate, as well as antioxidants choline, beta-carotene, lutein, and zeaxanthin as well as the various flavonoids. Cabbage has a GI 10 and GL of 1, so it will not affect your blood sugar. A 2007 study at UAE University came to an exciting conclusion concerning cabbage. Diabetes was induced in 60 rats. For a 2 month period the rats were studied and showed all the symptoms of one with Type 2 diabetes. Cabbage extract was then added to the diets of the rats for 60 days. The cabbage reversed the adverse effects of diabetes at the end of the trial period. The extract lowered blood glucose levels and restored renal function and body weight loss in the experiment. The study concluded that the antioxidant and antihyperglycemic properties of cabbage extract may offer a potential therapeutic source for the treatment of diabetes. So is cabbage good for diabetes? Cabbage was used as a home remedy to treat strains, sprains, swelling, ulcers, injuries, arthritis and joint pains. It contains anti-inflammatory agents. This remedy worked for many. Some say that cabbage leaves reduce gout pain. Some say that it can completely eliminate the pain. There isn't any clear scientific proof that this remedy works. Step #1 Firstly, get some fresh cabbage leaves from the market and keep them in a plastic bag. Place it in the freezer. When gout pain starts troubling you, take the cabbage leaves out of the freezer and wrap them on the affected area. Take a towel and wrap it over the leaves on the skin. Step #2 Your body temperature will slowly warm up the cool cabbage leaves. And during that process, certain compounds present in cabbage sink into your skin. This remedy is said to dissolve uric acid crystals which cause gout pain. At least, the inflammation in the area gets reduced. Remedy #2 If your feet are swollen, wrap cabbage leaves and place your feet elevated for 30 minutes. This might reduce the swelling. Another Method Without placing the cabbage leaves in the freezer, simply press them once with a rolling pin. This is just to create small crevices on the surface of the leaf so that the juices keep oozing. Step #2 Slightly warm up the leaf on a frying pan. Don't make it hot. Now, place the leaves on the joints. Use a cloth to tie the leaves to the joints. After 45 minutes, remove the leaves. Your joints feel better. Caution If your feet are allergic to cabbage or if you experience itching sensation, remove the leaves immediately. Talk to a doctor.

According to the researchers from Harvard University, for every 10 grams of fiber you consume, your risk for coronary heart disease drops by approximately 14%, plus, fruit fiber was found to be especially protective. #3 The polyphenols in grapes can help to protect you from heart disease by suppressing the process of atherosclerosis, a type of heart disease resulting in the buildup of low-density lipoprotein in artery walls. This condition can cause a stroke or a heart attack. #4 Oatmeal is high in soluble fiber, that can lower total and LDL cholesterol because it acts as a sponge in the digestive tract and absorbs the cholesterol which is then eliminated from the body. #5 Red cabbage protects against heart disease, largely due to its high concentration of beta-carotene, resveratrol, and vitamin C. According to a study conducted by the Department of Epidemiology at Harvard School of Public Health, one serving a day of vegetables and fruits, especially those that are high in vitamin C, like cruciferous vegetables, results in a 4% lower risk of coronary heart disease. #6 Bananas have one of the highest potassium contents available.
