Now these drinks are calorie free, which technically should help people lose weight and prevent sugar-related diseases… 1:10 - However, the evidence for these beverages having any use is completely nonexistent. Which brings me to my first terrible aftermath from drinking diet sodas, side effect #4: Metabolic syndrome. 1:29 - There is a lot of evidence supporting the fact that regularly drinking diet sodas can actually cause what researchers call “Metabolic syndrome”... Which is a series of risk factors that can lead to diabetes, stroke and in extreme cases, heart attacks. 1:50 - Now this condition is defined as having or experiencing at least 3 of the following symptoms - excessive belly fat or clinical obesity, high blood pressure, high fasting glucose (those with sugar-packed diets), high triglycerides and low amounts of your body’s good cholesterol. A study of 6,814 individuals aged 45-85 years, daily consumption of diet soda was associated with a 67% increased risk of type II diabetes. In another French study, women were studied for 14 years and it was found that women who consumed the most diet drinks had a 121% greater risk of developing type II diabetes. 5:46 - I hate to be the barer of bad news - especially because the main reason people switch to diet drinks is to cut back on calories in order to lose weight… However, the numbers don’t lie people. 6:15 - And now, the final side effect. Their study found that diet soda devotees were 43 percent more likely to have experienced a vascular event than those who drank none. Regular soda drinkers did not appear to have an increased risk of vascular events. That can’t be further from the truth. Eating fat, COULD make you fat if you eat in excess of your daily caloric maintenance levels just as eating too many carbs and protein can as well. The simple act of eating a fat molecule will not cause it to be stored as body fat in your body. In fact, nutritional fats are a necessary part of a healthy diet plan, with fat making up a portion of the surrounding layer of nearly every cell in your body. Next diet myth that needs to die is the concept that eating after 6PM at night is somehow going to make you fat. After seeing so many people suffering from obesity related diseases like heart disease, diabetes and the side effects of the medication they were taking, I was strongly motivated to research what actually causes people to become obese, it clearly was not just the fat they were eating! I actually discovered that a trigger factor for many widespread diseases of the west such as obesity, heart disease and diabetes could be closely linked to the consumption of one particular substance found in many processed foods and drinks – fructose in the form of high fructose corn syrup. Fructose is the form of high fructose corn syrup found in pretty much all processed foods such as ready meals, fast foods, sweets and fizzy drinks and most people are totally unaware of its danger. It is also often found in ‘low fat’ supposedly healthy alternatives and even many popular weight loss products because food with the fat taken out simply tastes horrible. High fructose corn syrup in combination with many other additives are usually added to enhance the flavor. Glucose is the type of sugar our body loves. It gets metabolized by every cell in our body and is very easy to burn with very few toxic by-products. It also tells the brain to stop eating when you are full. Fructose on the other hand is another type of sugar and is found in sucrose which breaks down to glucose and fructose. Fructose is actually only metabolized by the liver and it’s very similar to ethanol (the alcohol in drinks). When you consume it, it’s actually like ethanol but without the high. It confuses the liver and ends up making lots of bad fats in the process. It also doesn’t signal your brain that you are full. This is why people can drink massive cups of fizzy drinks which are high in fructose and still eat huge meals containing refined foods that are also full of fructose. Many fruits also contain fructose, but nature has provided the antidote, as these fruits are also packed with fibre which prevents your body from absorbing too much of it. When I advised people to reduce their consumption of high fructose corn syrup by eating lower carb/higher protein diets, free from processed foods, even if the labels say they are healthy options, they started to lose weight and feel much better as a result. In many cases I asked people to just stop their consumption of fizzy drinks like Coca Cola and instead swap it with either plain water, or add some freshly squeezed lemon for flavor. Green tea is also a great alternative, and it is one of my personal favorites because it contains alpha wave stimulating theanine that also double serves as an antidote to the harmful effects of caffeine. Those who loved to drink tea and coffee sweetened with lots of sugar, I advised to swap with natural sweeteners like stevia instead. This alone had some remarkable results. There are 1.6 billion servings of Coke sold each day worldwide!! A very significant percentage of that is through supermarket chains like WALMART. Considered an all-natural alternative as it uses stevia, a herb from the sunflower family, as its sweetener and is up to 300x sweeter than sugar. Stevia- Lowers insulin and glucose due to its lack of metabolization - steviol glycosides pass through the upper gastrointestinal tract fully intact. Lowers Blood Pressure- One study from the journal Clinical Therapeutics conducted a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial in 174 patients - patients took either 500 mg of stevioside or placebo, 3 times per day. After two years, the group taking stevioside: Systolic blood pressure went from 150 to 140 mmHg and Diastolic blood pressure went from 95 down to 89 mmHg. Caffeine– Most sodas contain caffeine, which has been linked to certain cancers, breast lumps, irregular heart beat, high blood pressure, and other problems. The Water– The water used in soda is just simple tap water and can contain chemicals like chlorine, fluoride and traces of heavy metals. Obesity– Harvard researchers have recently positively linked soft drinks to obesity. The study found that 12 year olds who drank soda were more likely to be obese than those who didn’t, and for each serving of soda consumed daily, the risk of obesity increased 1.6 times. Extra Fructose– Sodas contain High Fructose Corn Syrup, which obviously comes from corn. Most of this corn has been genetically modified, and there are no long term studies showing the safety of genetically modified crops, as genetic modification of crops has only been around since the 1990s. Also, the process of making High Fructose Corn Syrup involves traces of mercury, which causes a variety of long term health problems. Lack of Nutrients– There is absolutely no nutritional value in soda whatsoever. Not only are there many harmful effects of soda, but there are not even any positive benefits to outweigh them. Soda is an unnatural substance that harms the body. Dehydration– Because of the high sugar, sodium and caffeine content in soda, it dehydrates the body and over a long period of time can cause chronic dehydration. People who take certain HIV medications often get high cholesterol as a side effect of the drugs. Recently my doctor told me that I have high cholesterol. But is it a result of my drug regimen? I had been taking Reyataz, Norvir and Truvada, all of which have high cholesterol as a possible adverse effect. It could be my genes or my lifestyle--or even a combination. I may never really know. But since high cholesterol increases your risk of having a heart attack or stroke, it's time for me to make some changes. Here Comes Trouble My average cholesterol is 234.1; the average of my doctor's patients is 185. My LDL, or "bad cholesterol," is 143.1, which is borderline high. My HDL, or "good" cholesterol, is 52, which is good. (To learn more about cholesterol levels, go here.) My triglycerides were also high. High cholesterol runs in my family. For years I have known that my dad has it. Over the holidays I learned that my mother does too. This double shot of high cholesterol means that I really have to be careful, especially since being male and of African American descent may increase my risk of heart disease also. Fortunately I don't smoke. Living for the Weekend Rather than immediately change my meds, which is complicated, my doctor decided that we'd first approach the problem by making lifestyle changes. There are two areas that I can take charge of on my own: eating and exercise. First I had to slow my cholesterol intake. Now that I'm 30, my body doesn't process foods at the same speed that it did when I was 19. This meant that I had to examine my food choices. During the week, my diet was relatively healthy. Here was my diet on a typical day: Breakfast: Ensure nutritional supplement Snack: ravoli Lunch: Quiznos sandwich, but sometimes McDonald's, pizza or buffalo wings Snack: banana Dinner: pasta, red meat or fish with rice, and wine, preferably red But the weekend was a whole different story: I love a good steak-and-eggs breakfast; I also eat a lot. Here is an example of a typical weekend day: Breakfast: pork bacon, ham, pancakes, biscuits, hash browns and maybe some grits (I also smothered foods with butter) Lunch: chips, pickles and soda Dinner: pizza, chicken wings with ranch sauce, or a steak with mashed potatoes Many of these foods are high in cholesterol (go here to learn more about foods to eat and foods to avoid). I also used a lot of condiments that were high in cholesterol. And I didn't work out much. Yet my waist is still a size 28--okay, 29--so until my doctor said something, I thought everything was okay. But I realized that I had to improve my eating habits, particularly on the weekend, and head to the gym. Given the choice between big steaks and a healthy life, to me the choice is clear. A Change of Plans So I've changed my eating habits. On a typical weekday I now eat: Breakfast: banana and a cinnamon-raisin bagel Snack: orange juice, an apple, water Lunch: club sandwich without bacon, iced green tea Snack: crackers Dinner: baked fish, greens, rice and wine, preferably red And on weekends I now eat: Breakfast: pancakes, muffin with honey, turkey bacon Lunch: tuna fish sandwich with mayonnaise Dinner: catfish, rice, couscous and wine I also take one multivitamin, fish oil to protect against heart disease, and vitamin D because my doctor has noticed in some of his patients who take it that their T-cell, or CD4, counts have gone up. This is on top of the three HIV meds (six pills) I take every day. And I've started hitting the gym three times a week to lift free weights. On my off days, I try to run at least one mile. Just because people look fit on the outside doesn't mean they're fit on the inside. And I may only be 30, with a 29 waist, but I have more than just HIV to worry about.

Soft drinks are carbonated beverages. They are commonly also known as soda, soda pop, pop or tonic. While occasional consumption of these types of beverages may not cause any negative effects, drinking them on a regular basis is not healthy. Cutting back on the number of soft drinks you consume -- or eliminating them from your diet altogether -- is the best way to prevent associated health problems. Obesity Non-diet soft drinks contain high amounts of sugar which adds calories to the daily diet. Regular consumption of soft drinks has been linked to obesity in both adults and children. Soft drinks as well as energy or sports drinks, sweetened teas, fruit juices and other high-calorie beverages, can lead to increased body mass index as well. Obesity and a high body mass index are risk factors for many chronic health problems such as heart disease, diabetes and some forms of cancer. While still not a healthy alternative, substituting diet soda for regular soda will at least reduce caloric intake and can help to shed unwanted pounds. However, a better solution is to replace the soda, with calorie-free water and three servings of low-fat or fat-free milk per day. Diabetes According to an article published in 2005 by "American Academy of Family Physicians," consuming soft drinks on a regular basis may also contribute to a higher risk of developing diabetes. The sweeteners and caramel coloring added to soft drinks, may decrease insulin sensitivity. When the body becomes less sensitive to insulin, blood glucose levels can rise and diabetes can occur. Unlike water or low-fat milk, soda does not leave the body feeling full. This means that drinking soda adds calories to the daily diet, but does not curb hunger, both of which can lead to ingesting too many calories. This, in turn, raises the risk of diabetes. Sponsored Links Heart Disease Since drinking soda adds sugar and calories to the diet, it may also raise the risk of developing metabolic syndrome, which raises the risk of a heart attack or stroke. Metabolic syndrome is diagnosed when waist size is greater than or equal to 35 inches for women or 40 inches for men, when fasting blood glucose level is100 mg/dL or higher, when triglyceride levels are 150 mg/dL or higher and when blood pressure is greater than or equal to 135/85 mmHg. Tooth Decay Ingesting sugar can contribute to tooth decay because acid is produced when bacteria enters the mouth and mixes with sugar. When the acid attacks the teeth for 20 minutes or more and causes plaque buildup on the teeth and gums, it leads to tooth decay. While it is not necessary to cut out consumption of naturally occurring sugars from healthy foods such as dairy products, fruits and vegetables, it is important to limit intake of processed sugary foods, such as soda, that do not provide any nutritional value. Solution Given the calorie and sugar content of soda, it is best to cut it out of the diet completely. A can or two of diet soda a day may not be harmful to health. This amount of sugar, especially in liquid form, skyrockets the blood sugar and causes an insulin reaction in the body. Over time, this can lead to diabetes or insulin resistance, not to mention weight gain and other health problems. Soft drink companies are the largest user of sugar in the country. Phosphoric Acid -Soda contains phosphoric acid, which interferes with the body’s ability to absorb calcium and can lead to osteoporosis, cavities and bone softening. Phosphoric Acid also interacts with stomach acid, slowing digestion and blocking nutrient absorption. Artificial Sweeteners– In diet sodas, aspartame is used as a substitute for sugar, and can actually be more harmful. It has been linked to almost a hundred different health problems including seizures, multiple sclerosis, brain tumors, diabetes, and emotional disorders. It converts to methanol at warm temperatures and methanol breaks down to formaldehyde and formic acid. Diet sodas also increase the risk of metabolic syndrome, which causes belly fat, high blood sugar and raised cholesterol. Caffeine– Most sodas contain caffeine, which has been linked to certain cancers, breast lumps, irregular heart beat, high blood pressure, and other problems. The study found that 12 year olds who drank soda were more likely to be obese than those who didn’t, and for each serving of soda consumed daily, the risk of obesity increased 1.6 times. Extra Fructose– Sodas contain High Fructose Corn Syrup, which obviously comes from corn. Most of this corn has been genetically modified, and there are no long term studies showing the safety of genetically modified crops, as genetic modification of crops has only been around since the 1990s. Also, the process of making High Fructose Corn Syrup involves traces of mercury, which causes a variety of long term health problems. Lack of Nutrients– There is absolutely no nutritional value in soda whatsoever. Not only are there many harmful effects of soda, but there are not even any positive benefits to outweigh them. Soda is an unnatural substance that harms the body. Dehydration– Because of the high sugar, sodium and caffeine content in soda, it dehydrates the body and over a long period of time can cause chronic dehydration. Part of cleaning up what we eat is getting educated and alot of these videos focus on awareness. Today we talk about soda and yes, this is another topic that could be pages and pages. Here is just a brief overview, please research for yourself if you want to dig deeper. In addition, consuming large amounts of rapidly digested sugar and high fructose corn syrup causes a spike in blood sugar and insulin, which can lead to inflammation and insulin resistance, both of which may increase your risk of stroke, heart disease, diabetes, obesity and cancer. The large doses of fructose from both sucrose (table sugar) and high fructose corn syrup may be particularly detrimental to your health as they can cause the accumulation of metabolically toxic belly fat, cholesterol abnormalities -- including high triglycerides and reduced levels of HDL (good cholesterol) -- and nonalcoholic associated fatty liver disease. Soda is also associated with symptoms of gastro-esophageal reflux disease, when the contents of the stomach leak back up and cause a burning sensation in the esophagus. While drinking soda is not known to cause ulcers, it can cause symptoms to flare up. The American Heart Association recommends consuming no more than 450 calories from sugar sweetened beverages per week (the amount in three cans of cola). If you are overweight or obese, or at risk for heart disease or diabetes, you should limit your intake of sugar sweetened beverages as much as possible, including soda, energy drinks, sports drinks, juice drinks and sweetened water and/or tea. Drinking non-diet soda dramatically increases fat buildup around your liver and your skeletal muscles, both of which can contribute to insulin resistance and diabetes. People who drink diet soda have a 70 percent increase in waist circumference. It's the aspartame, which raised blood glucose levels, that causes the weight gain; when your liver encounters too much glucose, the excess is converted to body fat. Avoid brown sodas. The reason: Two contaminants in the coloring, 2-methylimidazole and 4-methylimidazole, have been found to cause cancer in animals, the coloring is purely cosmetic. Just 16 micrograms per person per day of 4-methylimidazole is enough to pose a cancer threat, and most popular brown colas, both diet and regular, contain 200 micrograms per 20-ounce bottle. Diet or regular, all colas contain phosphates, or phosphoric acid, a weak acid that gives colas their tangy flavor and improves their shelf life. Although it exists in many whole foods, such as meat, dairy, and nuts; too much phosphoric acid can lead to heart and kidney problems, muscle loss, and osteoporosis, and one study suggests it could trigger accelerated aging. A disturbing trend considering that soda manufacturers have been increasing the levels of phosphoric acid in their products over the past few decades. The artificial sweeteners used in diet sodas don't break down in our bodies and wastewater-treatment plants don't catch them before they enter the waterways. A recent test of 19 municipal water supplies in the U.S. revealed the presence of sucralose in every one. It's not clear yet what these low levels are doing to people, but past research has found that sucralose in rivers and lakes interferes with some organisms' feeding habits. Kids who drink too much Mountain Dew wind up with, what dentists call, "Mountain Dew Mouth," full of cavities caused by the drink's excessive sugar levels. The next medical condition we may see will be "Mountain Dew Mind". Brominated vegetable oil, or BVO, is added to prevent the flavoring from separating from citrus soda drinks and is an industrial chemical used as a flame retardant in plastics. The chemical has been known to cause memory loss and nerve disorders when consumed in large quantities. Researchers also suspect that the chemical builds up in body fat, possibly causing behavioral problems, infertility, and lesions on heart muscles over time. So you have probably all heard of the chemical aspartame which is the most common artificial sweetener found in diet sodas. The reports that were debunking the negatives of diet soda were saying that aspartame is harmful, but only if consumed in very large quantities. It was suggested that say 1, 2 or more cans of diet soda per day was not enough to cause the many problems that it is associated with. Some experts say that there has not been significant enough research over a long enough period to conclude that the many harmful reports are true or not. Regarding the link between diet soda and weight gain, some people said that overweight people who are drinking diet soda could be skewing the figures and statistics. Ok now let’s take a look at the many reported harmful side effects of consuming diet soda. TOOTH DECAY Now this element of drinking diet soda just blew my mind as I had no idea whatsoever, I thought it was the sugar in fizzy drinks that caused tooth decay but a case study published in the journal of General Dentistry compared the mouths of a cocaine-user, a methamphetamine-user, and a habitual diet-soda drinker, and found the same level of tooth decay in all 3 mouths. Even worse than sugar is the acids in both regular and diet soda which weakens and destroys tooth enamel. INCREASES EFFECTS OF ALCOHOL It has been researched and proven that those who combined alcohol and diet soda had a higher concentration of alcohol on their breath and got drunk faster than those that combined sugary drinks with alcohol. This is believed to be because artificial sweeteners are absorbed more quickly in the bloodstream than sugar. WEIGHT GAIN Drinking any liquid with a meal is a common practice and this includes diet sodas. One theory that was proven when testing mice and rats was that the artificial sweeteners in these diet drinks were tricking the animals brains into thinking they were not full despite having just eaten a meal. The artificial sweeteners signalled to the rats' brains that they were receiving calories as a result of tasting the sweetness of the diet soda. So when the body did not actually receive these calories, the animals craved more food. Based off these findings it is possible that humans consuming diet drinks regularly with their meals could be promoted to overeat or eat again soon after consuming a meal. I also read in the book called sugar detox written by Brooke Alpert that artificial sweeteners trigger insulin, which puts the body into fat storage mode and can lead to weight gain. So if that theory was accurate then essentially artificial sugar has the same damaging effects of real sugar for weight gain. THE CONTAINER ITSELF There is a particular chemical found in soda cans and containers called Bisphenol A which has been linked to issues including obesity, heart diseases and reproductive problems. METABOLIC SYDROME These 2 words could be seen as the biggest problem in the world today. Metabolic syndrome is an umbrella term for the collection of the most crippling diseases including high blood pressure, high cholesterol, large waist circumference, heart disease, stroke and diabetes. Reports claimed that drinking one diet soda can per day increased the chances of metabolic syndrome by close to 40%. DULLS SENSES The flavour of artificial sweeteners is actually more powerful than real sugar which can make other sweet foods like fruit taste duller than if we were not consuming artificial sweeteners. ZERO NUTRITIONAL BENEFIT Whilst it is true you are not consuming any calories, unlike plain water, when you consume diet soda you are also not consuming any beneficial nutrients eithers. WEAKER BONES I was repeatedly reading that both soda and diet soda has been proven to effect the calcium levels and strength of bones.

Vitamin B or Thiamine
Hi, I'm Dr. Jared Nielsen. I'd like to talk today about the importance of a vitamin called thiamine or B1. B1 is very, very important for liver function, especially for people who have a history of alcoholism. It's quickly depleted in the system and is essential for that person to be repleted, if you will, their B1 vitamin. There are a lot of people that don't think, "I am really an alcoholic or I don't really have a drinking problem." What's interesting is they'll start to manifest some of the symptomatology of B1 deficiency, peripheral neuropathies, sensitivity or hyper‑sensitivity in the legs and feet. These are very commonly overlapped with diabetics. Diabetics also would get that type of symptomatology as the liver becomes congested or a fatty infiltrated liver. When we look at blood labs, a lot patients will actually say, when we see cholesterol levels going up and triglyceride levels matching or even exceeding that they don't drink alcohol. What we see a lot of times is that they're chronic soda pop abusers. Without naming specifically different brands or types of soda drinks, what we find is people who have a daily soda pop actually will start to also have fatty infiltrated livers and their thiamine levels can start to go down.
