Should neurologists be lowering blood pressure acutely in intracranial hemorrhage?

05:10
Rapid, intensive lowering of intracerebral blood pressure (BP) did not appear to reduce death or severe disability in patients with intracerebral hemorrhage, but an analysis of modified Rankin scores indicated that patients who underwent intensive blood pressure BP-lowering had improved functional outcomes. Neurology Today Editor-in-chief Steven P. Ringel, MD, and Associate Editor Robert Holloway, MD, discuss the pros and cons of lowering blood pressure in the acute setting. Every four minutes someone dies from a stroke, but 80 percent of strokes are preventable. Stroke is the fifth leading cause of death and the leading cause of disability in adults in the United States. During a stroke, the blood supply to a part of the brain is disrupted, and the cells are unable to receive oxygen. Without an immediate restoration of blood supply, brain cells are permanently damaged, resulting in significant physical or mental disability. Recognizing symptoms and risk factors are essential for prompt medical intervention when a stroke occurs. Warning signs of stroke 1 Sudden numbness or weakness in the arms face, or legs If a person complains of sudden numbness or is experiencing weakness in their arms, legs or face, do not ignore it. Perform a quick test by stretching the person's arms (palms up) for 10 seconds. If an arm goes down, it can be a sign of stroke. Look for weak muscles or facial limbs The person may be unable to hold objects or suddenly lose balance while standing. Look for signs that only one side of the person's face or body has weakened. One side of the person's mouth may fall into a smile or may not be able to hold both arms above his or her head. 3 Look for confusion or trouble speaking or understanding speech When certain areas of the brain are affected, the individual may have difficulty speaking or understanding what is being said. Your loved one may seem confused by what you are saying, respond in a way that indicates you do not understand what was said, slur your words, or speak in confused noises that do not look like speech. This can be very frightening. Do your best to calm it down after you call your local emergency number for emergency medical treatment. 4 Ask if the person has vision problems in one or both eyes During a stroke, the vision may suddenly be affected. People say they lose sight in one or both eyes or see double. As the person can not see or is seeing double (if you are having trouble talking, ask him to nod with yes or no if possible). Symptoms of a stroke 5 Watch for the loss of coordination or balance When the person loses strength in their arms or legs, they may notice that the person has difficulty with balance and coordination. He may not be able to pick up a pen or can not coordinate the ride because a leg can not function properly. 6 Sudden and severe headache A stroke is also called a "stroke" and can result in a sudden headache that is described as the worst headache someone has experienced. A headache may be associated with nausea and vomiting because of increased pressure in the brain. 7 dizziness Dizziness is the most common symptom of a stroke. People may misinterpret this symptom by thinking that the person is intoxicated, but he or she may have a stroke. 8 Shortness of breath A person suffering from a stroke will also experience shortness of breath and difficulty breathing. This usually happens when the part of the brain responsible for the respiratory function is affected due to a reduced blood flow.

What are the Risks of Not Treating High Blood Pressure? - Hypertension Effects Animation HT Dangers

00:27
If left untreated, hypertension can lead to the thickening of arterial walls causing its lumen, or blood passage way, to narrow in diameter. As a result, the heart must work harder to pump blood through the narrowed arterial openings. In addition, people with hypertension may be more susceptible to stroke. High blood pressure dangers: Hypertension's effects on your body High blood pressure is a risk factor for more than heart disease. Discover what complications high blood pressure can cause. High blood pressure (hypertension) can quietly damage your body for years before symptoms develop. Left uncontrolled, you may wind up with a disability, a poor quality of life or even a fatal heart attack. Fortunately, with treatment and lifestyle changes, you can control your high blood pressure to reduce your risk of life-threatening complications. Here's a look at the complications high blood pressure can cause when it's not effectively controlled. Damage to your arteries Healthy arteries are flexible, strong and elastic. Their inner lining is smooth so that blood flows freely, supplying vital organs and tissues with adequate nutrients and oxygen. If you have high blood pressure, the increased pressure of blood flowing through your arteries gradually can cause a variety of problems, including: Artery damage and narrowing. High blood pressure can damage the cells of your arteries' inner lining. That launches a cascade of events that make artery walls thick and stiff, a disease called arteriosclerosis (ahr-teer-e-o-skluh-ROE-sis), or hardening of the arteries. Fats from your diet enter your bloodstream, pass through the damaged cells and collect to start atherosclerosis (ath-ur-o-skluh-ROE-sis). These changes can affect arteries throughout your body, blocking blood flow to your heart, kidneys, brain, arms and legs. The damage can cause many problems, including chest pain (angina), heart attack, heart failure, kidney failure, stroke, blocked arteries in your legs or arms (peripheral artery disease), eye damage, and aneurysms. Aneurysm. Over time, the constant pressure of blood moving through a weakened artery can cause a section of its wall to enlarge and form a bulge (aneurysm). An aneurysm (AN-yoo-riz-um) can potentially rupture and cause life-threatening internal bleeding. Aneurysms can form in any artery throughout your body, but they're most common in the aorta, your body's largest artery. Damage to your heart Your heart pumps blood to your entire body. Uncontrolled high blood pressure can damage your heart in a number of ways, such as: Coronary artery disease. Coronary artery disease affects the arteries that supply blood to your heart muscle. Arteries narrowed by coronary artery disease don't allow blood to flow freely through your arteries. When blood can't flow freely to your heart, you can experience chest pain, a heart attack or irregular heart rhythms (arrhythmias). Enlarged left heart. High blood pressure forces your heart to work harder than necessary in order to pump blood to the rest of your body. This causes the left ventricle to thicken or stiffen (left ventricular hypertrophy). These changes limit the ventricle's ability to pump blood to your body. This condition increases your risk of heart attack, heart failure and sudden cardiac death. Heart failure. Over time, the strain on your heart caused by high blood pressure can cause your heart muscle to weaken and work less efficiently. Eventually, your overwhelmed heart simply begins to wear out and fail. Damage from heart attacks adds to this problem. Damage to your brain Just like your heart, your brain depends on a nourishing blood supply to work properly and survive. But high blood pressure can cause several problems, including: Transient ischemic attack (TIA). Sometimes called a ministroke, a transient ischemic (is-KEE-mik) attack is a brief, temporary disruption of blood supply to your brain. It's often caused by atherosclerosis or a blood clot — both of which can arise from high blood pressure. A transient ischemic attack is often a warning that you're at risk of a full-blown stroke. Stroke. A stroke occurs when part of your brain is deprived of oxygen and nutrients, causing brain cells to die. Uncontrolled high blood pressure can lead to stroke by damaging and weakening your brain's blood vessels, causing them to narrow, rupture or leak. High blood pressure can also cause blood clots to form in the arteries leading to your brain, blocking blood flow and potentially causing a stroke.

Always seek the advice of a qualified healthcare provider with any questions you may have regarding a medical condition. A stroke occurs when the blood supply to a certain part of the brain is reduced or interrupted. Without oxygen and nutrients from the blood, brain cells cannot function properly and eventually die. There are 2 major types of strokes: ISCHEMIC stroke caused by a BLOCKED artery, and HEMORRHAGIC stroke caused by a RUPTURED artery. Ischemic stroke happens when a blood clot OBSTRUCTS an artery. In some patients, the clot forms locally, inside the blood vessels that supply the brain. This occurs when fatty deposits in an artery, or cholesterol plaques, rupture and trigger blood clotting. In other cases, a clot may travel to the brain from elsewhere in the body. Most commonly, this happens in patients with atrial fibrillation, a heart condition in which the heart does not pump properly, blood stagnates in its chambers and this facilitates blood clotting. The clots may then pass into the bloodstream, get stuck in smaller arteries of the brain and block them. Hemorrhagic stroke, on the other hand, occurs when an artery leaks or ruptures. This can result from high blood pressure, overuse of blood-thinners/anticoagulant drugs, or abnormal formations of blood vessels such as aneurysms and AVMs. As a hemorrhage takes place, brain tissues located BEYOND the site of bleeding are deprived of blood supply. Bleeding also induces contraction of blood vessels, narrowing them and thus further limiting blood flow. Stroke symptoms may include one or more of the following: - Paralysis of muscles of the face, arms or legs: inability to smile, raise an arm, or difficulty walking. - Slurred speech or inability to understand simple speech. - Sudden and severe headache, vomiting, dizziness or reduced consciousness. Cerebral stroke is a medical emergency and requires immediate attention. It is essential to determine if a stroke is ischemic or hemorrhagic before attempting treatment. This is because certain drugs used for treatment of ischemic strokes, such as blood thinners, may CRITICALLY aggravate bleeding in hemorrhagic strokes. - For ischemic strokes, emergency treatment aims to restore blood flow by removing blood clots. Medication, such as aspirin and tissue plasminogen activator, TPA, are usually the first options. TPA may be given intravenously, or, in the case the symptoms have advanced, delivered directly to the brain via a catheter inserted through an artery at the groin. Blood clots may also be removed mechanically by a special device delivered through a catheter. - Emergency treatment for hemorrhagic strokes, on the other hand, aims to stop bleeding, reduce blood pressure, and prevent vasospasm and seizures. These goals are usually achieved by a variety of drugs. If the bleeding is significant, surgery may be required to drain the blood and reduce intracranial pressure. Preventive treatments for strokes include: - Removal of cholesterol plaques in carotid arteries that supply the brain - Widening of narrowed carotid arteries with a balloon, and sometimes, a stent. This is usually done with a catheter inserted at the groin. - Various procedures to prevent rupturing of brain aneurysms, such as clipping and embolization. - Removal or embolization of vascular malformations - Bypassing the problematic artery

Brain Aneurysm Symptoms: 9 Warning Signs of a Brain Aneurysm

Brain aneurysms are potentially life-threatening, especially if they burst. Healthline describes a brain aneurysm as a weakening in an area of the brain’s arterial wall that causes it to bulge and fill with blood. Brain aneurysms can develop in anyone at any age. Several conditions and lifestyle choices are more likely to cause the development of a brain aneurysm including autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease, Marfan’s syndrome, some traumatic brain injuries, serious systemic infections, family history, smoking, drug abuse, atherosclerosis, and high blood pressure. In addition, women over 40 are at higher risk for developing a brain aneurysm. Brain damage or death can occur when a brain aneurysm ruptures. The Mayo Clinic has identified these nine warning signs of a ruptured brain aneurysm that necessitate immediate medical attention. 1. A sudden and severe headache 2. Nausea and vomiting 3. Stiff neck 4. Blurred or double vision 5. Sensitivity to light 6. Convulsive seizures 7. Drooping eyelid(s) 8. Loss of consciousness 9. Confusion According to the Brain Aneurysm Foundation, an estimated 50 to 80 percent of brain aneurysms do not rupture. Annually, about 30,000 people suffer from a ruptured brain aneurysm, with approximately 40 percent of cases resulting in death. WebMD explains that a brain aneurysm often is unruptured and small enough that a doctor may want to monitor it over time and watch for changes instead of performing surgery. Some unruptured brain aneurysms can cause pressure on the brain and lead to painful or disruptive symptoms such as headaches, blurred vision, neck pain, and speech changes. Some unruptured aneurysms do not cause any symptoms and may be found inadvertently while performing diagnostic testing for another condition. In order to diagnose and treat a brain aneurysm, a doctor may perform a CT scan or MRI. Treatment for a brain aneurysm depends on the size, location, and severity of the aneurysm, says Healthline. Pain medications are often prescribed to treat head and eye pain. Medication may also be prescribed to prevent blood vessel blockages or to relieve cranial pressure. Simple Science @Heart: Black stroke survivors face greater risk from high blood pressure

01:02
Blacks who survive strokes caused by bleeding in the brain are more likely than whites to have high blood pressure a year later, a new study says. Continued high blood pressure increases their risk of another stroke. The study examined racial and ethnic differences in these strokes, called intracranial hemorrhage or ICH. They make up only 10 percent of all strokes but have a death rate of about 40 percent in the first month, much higher than other types of stroke. High blood pressure is the most important modifiable risk factor associated with ICH. Taking medication, making changes to your diet and exercising can help you maintain healthy blood pressure. Also, patients who were married and those who lived in a facility rather than a private residence had lower blood pressure, researchers said. For more information, please go to http://blog.heart.org.

How Does Diabetes and Hypertension Affect Your Brain Health

04:14
http://goo.gl/QCJ9b0 - How to reverse diabetes! Turns out, the diabetes industry is selling us fake research! Hi! I'm robo-Suzie and today I'll talk to you about How Does Diabetes and Hypertension Affect Your Brain Health. Also don't forget to check out the link below, to find out, how this guy reversed his diabetes! Turns out, the diabetes industry is selling us fake research! But back to our topic. Diabetes is when the body is unable to regulate the amount of glucose released into the bloodstream after eating a meal. This can have a long term impact on the diabetic who will find that the condition will affect everything from their waterworks to their brain function. Studies have repeatedly shown that diabetes slows down mental function and impairs the ability to complete cognitive tasks quickly and easily. Language is also affected as is the ability to recall information. It should be noted however, that the results of the studies found that although mental function was compromised, it did not interfere with daily life. Although diabetics have general health concerns due to the nature of their condition, having diabetes also increases the risk of heart attacks and stroke. These factors increase the likelihood of memory problems. Studies have also found that patients with severe diabetes have poor cognitive abilities because the nerves cells in the brain were damaged due to the disease. The chance of developing Alzheimer's or dementia was found to be highest in those with poorly controlled diabetes. This should set alarm bells ringing for all diabetics, as it is just another problem to add to their list of current problems. Hypertension is when a patient repeatedly suffers from high blood pressure, or where blood pressure is uncontrolled so as to cause concern for the sufferer. Some of the main problems associated with hypertension include a greater risk of heart attacks and strokes. The other main concern with hypertensive patients is that the high blood pressure can cause a brain hemorrhage. A brain hemorrhage occurs when the blood vessels inside the brain burst due to increased pressure, causing bleeding in the brain. Hypertension can also cause aneurysms in the brain. These are weakened vessels in the brain where the blood pools together and bulges. Left untreated, an aneurysm can burst causing a hemorrhage and eventually severe brain damage or even death. It is important to understand that the severity of a hemorrhage due to hypertension is made worse by the presence of diabetes, which can further weaken the blood vessels in the brain. In patients who have both hypertension and diabetes, managing both conditions is critical to preserving their brain health. One of the worst aspects of aging is the effect it has on the brain and all mental abilities. Naturally as the body ages, so too does the mind. Having a condition such as diabetes and hypertension can easily age your brain quicker than it would a healthy person. Preventing brain aging requires looking after one's health coupled with training your brain. This will improve performance and delay the onset of age related memory problems. Taking simple measures such as eating less salt and sugar, decreasing the amount of fat in your diet and eating lots of fresh fruit, vegetables and oily fish all help to improve overall health as well as brain health. Measures should be taken to control diabetes and hypertension correctly, and it is advised to see your doctor who can decide on the best treatment for you. Do not underestimate the power of exercise either, as this helps to reduce blood pressure and helps to bring high blood sugar levels on an even keel. A healthy diet and exercise is the minimum requirement to look after your body and your brain. As a diabetic or hypertensive, you should also take brain training very seriously if you want to prevent long-term memory and mental problems. Research has found that those who train their brains with specific exercises and challenge their minds with daily puzzles have sharper minds than those who do not. A proper brain training program should be an integral part of your lifestyle if you want to stay mentally active for years to come. That's it! Thank you. High Blood Pressure Stroke Risk

01:48
Any kind of stroke can be serious. The patient can experience long term effects, even death after a stroke. Doctors say there are warning signs people need to be aware of to lower their risk for having a stroke. Dr. Jon Brillman, a neurologist with Lee Health, says the biggest risk for having a hemorrhagic stroke is high blood pressure. “There are two types of strokes: one is an ischemic stroke. It’s what we call a stroke where there’s not enough circulation to a part of the brain and then you can become paralyzed or lose your speech because the part of the brain that’s getting that blood supply is impaired. That constitutes to about 80 to 85 percent of all strokes.” The other is a hemorrhagic stroke. It’s caused by bleeding in the brain. While it’s not as common, doctors say it can be more serious. “Fifteen percent of all strokes are bleeds, so it’s not rare. They can be very dangerous too, depending on the size and the location. It’s slightly more dangerous in terms of survival than a regular stroke, but the deficits can be the same in both,” said Dr. Brillman. Hemorrhagic strokes are typically associated with high blood pressure. They have fewer warning signs and can be sudden, causing temporary paralysis, loss of speech, or a terrible headache. “High cholesterol is a risk factor, stress can be a risk factor, but by and large hypertension is the main risk factor,” said Dr. Brillman. Patients with high blood pressure need to increase their physical activity and modify their diet. “We know now that a third to 50 percent of patients don’t take their medications so that’s why we have these problems,” said Dr. Brillman. While hemorrhagic strokes typically happen in advanced age, doctors say they can happen to anyone with uncontrolled high blood pressure. It’s important to monitor your blood pressure and make necessary changes to your lifestyle. The Dangers of High Blood Pressure (Hypertension) "The Silent Killer"

03:31
Let's talk about what is high blood pressure aka hypertension and dangers of have high blood pressure. An optimal blood pressure level is 120/80mmHg or lower, and high blood pressure or hypertension is 140/90 mmHg or higher, whatever your age. The lower your blood pressure the lower your risk of heart attack, heart failure, stroke and kidney disease will be. The top number refers to the amount of pressure in your arteries during contraction of your heart muscle. This is called systolic pressure. The bottom number refers to your blood pressure when your heart muscle is between beats. This is called diastolic pressure. There are no signs or symptoms of high blood pressure which is why it is called the silent killer. High blood pressure can be controlled through lifestyle changes or medication. Some of the dangers of high blood pressure are atherosclerosis, heart failure, stroke, and aneurysms. Atherosclerosis hardening and narrowing of the arteries silently and slowly blocks arteries, putting blood flow at risk. It’s the usual cause of heart attacks, strokes, and peripheral vascular disease -- what together are called cardiovascular disease. What Causes Atherosclerosis? Atherosclerosis begins with damage to the endothelium. It’s caused by high blood pressure, smoking, or high cholesterol. That damage leads to the formation of plaque. When bad cholesterol, or LDL, crosses the damaged endothelium, the cholesterol enters the wall of the artery. That causes your white blood cells to stream in to digest the LDL. Over years, cholesterol and cells become plaque in the wall of the artery. Plaque creates a bump on the artery wall. As atherosclerosis progresses, that bump gets bigger. When it gets big enough, it can create a blockage. That process goes on throughout your entire body. As a result, not only is your heart at risk, but you are also at risk for stroke and other health problems. Atherosclerosis usually doesn’t cause symptoms until middle or older age. But as the narrowing becomes severe, it can choke off blood flow and cause pain. Blockages can also rupture suddenly. That’ll cause blood to clot inside an artery at the site of the rupture. https://www.webmd.com/heart-disease/what-is-atherosclerosis#1 Aneurysms can also occur due to high blood pressure. An aneurysm occurs when an artery’s wall weakens and causes an abnormally large bulge. This bulge can rupture and cause internal bleeding. Although an aneurysm can occur in any part of your body, they’re most common in the: brain aorta legs spleen An aneurysm may occur anywhere in your body, but the most common locations of aneurysms are: Aorta The aorta is the largest blood vessel in the body. It begins at the left ventricle of the heart and travels down the abdomen where it splits off into both legs. The aorta is a common site for arterial aneurysms. Aneurysms in the chest cavity are called thoracic aortic aneurysms. Abdominal aortic aneurysms are the most common type. In rare cases, both the chest and abdomen can be affected by arterial damage. Brain Aneurysms in the brain can be any size. These often form in the blood vessels that lie deep within the brain. They also may not present any symptoms or signs. You may not even know you have. ymptoms of an aneurysm vary with each type and location. It’s important to know that aneurysms that occur in the body or brain generally don’t present signs or symptoms until they rupture. Aneurysms that occur near the surface of the body may show signs of swelling and pain. A large mass may also develop. The symptoms of ruptured aneurysms anywhere in the body can include: bleeding increased heart rate pain feeling dizzy or lightheaded Serious complications from aneurysms can cause death if you don’t get emergency care. https://www.healthline.com/health/aneurysm#symptoms #3 danger of high blood pressure is heart failure or heart attack. More than a million Americans have heart attacks each year. A heart attack, or myocardial infarction (MI), is permanent damage to the heart muscle. "Myo" means muscle, "cardial" refers to the heart, and "infarction" means death of tissue due to lack of blood supply. If you have coronary artery disease, those arteries become narrow and blood cannot flow as well as they should. Fatty matter, calcium, proteins, and inflammatory cells build up within the arteries to form plaques of different sizes. The plaque deposits are hard on the outside and soft and mushy on the inside. When the plaque is hard, the outer shell cracks (plaque rupture), platelets (disc-shaped particles in the blood that aid clotting) come to the area, and blood clots form around the plaque. If a blood clot totally blocks the artery, the heart muscle becomes "starved" for oxygen. Within a short time, death of heart muscle cells occurs, causing permanent damage. This is a heart attack. https://www.webmd.com/heart-disease/guide/heart-disease-heart-attacks#1

♥ WARNING: Painkillers Cause High Blood Pressure, Especially In Women

03:47
My Favorite Formula For Lowering Blood Pressure Naturally: ►►http://drsam.co/yt/LowerYourPressure ======================================= ♥ WARNING: Painkillers Cause High Blood Pressure, Especially In Women ======================================= Most of us, when something hurts, we simply pop a couple pain killers and don’t give it a second thought. A headache, joint pain, muscle pain from working out, menstrual pain and so forth. However, recent research has found a direct connection between high blood pressure levels and the use non-aspirin painkillers - such as acetaminophen (Tylenol) and ibuprofen (Advil and Motrin). Additionally, the report reveals a much higher risk for women, than men! A Harvard study involved 5,123 women age 34 to 77, all having healthy blood pressure levels to start. However, here’s what the study revealed: For women not taking painkillers, the risk of developing high blood pressure levels was only about 1-3 percent a year. Women taking 400 mg a day of over-the-counter painkillers (the equivalent of two ibuprofen) had a 60-78 percent increased risk of developing high blood pressure levels. Women taking an average daily dose of 500 mg of acetaminophen (one extra-strength tablet) had a 93-99 percent increased risk of developing high blood pressure levels within three years. That’s DOUBLE! The cause of this is because of the fluid retention and decreased kidney function due to these drugs. Why Is It Worse For Women? This is because women have smaller blood vessels in the heart, making them more vulnerable to high blood pressure and inflammation of the blood vessels. Now, aging causes higher blood pressure for BOTH men and women. However, as women get closer to menopause, there is a dramatic drop in estrogen, which causes a woman’s arteries to become less elastic and more constrictive, thus contributing to high blood pressure. Unfortunately, giving women synthetic hormones (estrogen and especially progesterone) makes this situation only worse. Options You should only take these drugs occasionally, as needed and definitely not daily or more than 3x weekly. By the way, aspirin does not cause high blood pressure, but it has its own set of negative side-effects, such as stomach pain, ulcers, excessive bleeding, becoming acidic, etc. Most pain is related to inflammation. So drinking more water, taking higher dosages of Vitamin C, Magnesium and Curcummin will help. Lastly, make SURE you control your blood pressure using natural solutions, especially if you’re over the age of 40 - both men and women. It’s one of the primary causes of heart and brain aging.
