It is used by our bodies to make bile acids, vitamin D and also plays a role in maintaining hormone levels. For our bodies to function properly, it is important that we have healthy levels of cholesterol. When we have high cholesterol levels and more cholesterol in our blood than is needed, this can be problematic, and lead to health complications. High cholesterol levels are especially troublesome since its symptoms are not easily detected, and they will have to be checked by your doctor. Having high cholesterol levels can lead to a number of different ailments, including plaque build up i the arteries, gallstones, heart attacks, heart disease and decreased blood flow and circulation. Fortunately, we can make dietary changed can decrease high cholesterol levels, along with a change in lifestyle and exercise. Lets discuss some foods that can help to decrease cholesterol levels in the body. 1. First, almonds can help to lower cholesterol levels in the body. Not only that, but they work to reduce “bad” LDL cholesterol while raising “good” HDL cholesterol and are also a great source of healthy unsaturated fats. As well, almonds work to make LDL cholesterol less likely to oxidize. When it does oxidize, this leads to a clogging of the arteries and restricts blood flow to important organs.Try not to overeat almonds for these benefits. 2. Oatmeal can also be helpful for lowering high cholesterol levels when consumed consistently. Oats are a great source of soluble fibre. This fibre forms a gel when you eat it that helps to prevent the absorption of cholesterol into the bloodstream. You can also add fibre rich nuts or fruit like apples to increase the fibre levels of this cholesterol friendly food. 3. Olive oil is also beneficial for lowering high cholesterol levels. As we have discussed in previous videos, this oil is great for your overall heart heath. It is packed with antioxidants and monounsaturated fats that will lower LDL cholesterol and increase HDL cholesterol as studies have indicated. As well, olive oil is a great source of phenolics, a plant substance that can help prevent the blood from clotting. 1 or 2 tablespoons of olive oil a day is all you need for these benefits. 4. Blueberries are an incredible superfood that provide many nutrients and health benefits. One of these benefits is that they can help to keep our arteries clear and prevent clogging by reducing LDL cholesterol in the blood. This is because blueberries work to promote and support the overall function of our liver, which can work to eliminate and remove unneeded cholesterol from our bodies. 5. High cholesterol levels can also be decreased if you consume tomatoes on a consistent basis. They contain great amounts of lycopene which may reduce LDL cholesterol levels in the body. Research has indicated that when we consume lycopene-rich foods like tomatoes, it can inhibit overall LDL production, and also help break down this fat so that is does not build up in the arteries. 6. Therefore, it is recommended that they lose some weight to help reduce their cholesterol level. To help keep cholesterol low, it is important to eat a healthy diet that is low in unsaturated fat. However, cholesterol levels can be reduced when you include the following super 8 foods that lower cholesterol. 1. Oats: Having a bowl of oatmeal or oat-based cereal for breakfast is an easy first step to improving your cholesterol. It provides you with 1g to 2g of soluble fiber and an extra 0.5g each if you add a banana or some strawberries. The daily recommendation for fiber is 20 to 30 grams with 5 to 10 grams obtained from soluble fiber. 2. Barley and other whole grains: These assist in lowering the risk of cardiovascular diseases, just like oats and oat bran, mostly through their supply of soluble fiber. 3. Nuts: Nuts are rich in fiber, vegetable protein, healthy fats, vitamin E, potassium, magnesium, natural plant sterols and many other plant nutrients that are beneficial. Taking about 30-35g of nuts daily could lower cholesterol by up to 5%. 4. Beans and Other Legumes: Beans, lentils, peas and peanuts are also super sources of soluble fiber. According to a study published in The Journal of Nutrition (November 2007), it was discovered that eating half a cup of cooked dried pinto beans (2 grams of soluble fiber) every day for 12 weeks consistently decreased LDL cholesterol by almost 7%. 5. Soy: Soy is another super food that is high in fiber, low in saturated fat and free of cholesterol. It is the only complete plant-based protein, which implies that it’s an equal swap for animal sources like meat and dairy. Substituting foods that are high in saturated fat with daily Soy intake has the ability to lower LDL cholesterol by almost 8 to 10% - according to a study published in The Journal of Nutrition (2010). 6. Vegetable oils: Another way to reduce cholesterol is by cooking with liquid vegetable oils such as sunflower, canola, safflower and others instead of butter or lard. 7. Citrus fruits, Grapes, Apples and Strawberries: These fruits are very rich in pectin, a type of soluble fiber that helps lower LDL. 8. Limit your intake and focus more on vegetable proteins and fish - especially wild-caught salmon. Eggs Eggs can be good or bad. All the cholesterol and fat is located in the egg YOLK, which is why most “experts” say you should only consume egg whites. Cholesterol is a substance which is found in every cell of your body. Your body requires a certain amount of cholesterol to make hormones, vitamin D, and to help you digest foods.  The body produces all the cholesterol it needs. However, cholesterol also is found in some foods as well. Cholesterol is transported throughout the body by 2 kinds of lipoproteins.  We have the LDL which is the bad Cholesterol and the HDL which is the good cholesterol.  How to reduce bad Cholesterol:  In order to reduce bad Cholesterol, we have come to terms with ourselves regarding our diet. Eating anything and everything which looks appetizing and tasty may not be the solution. # Let us take a look at some really healthy foods that can prevent bad Cholesterol:  1. Olive oil: Try using 2 tablespoons of Olive Oil in your food per day. It is safer than other oils and helps reduce LDL levels.  2. Whey Protein: This is a dairy products and is known to lessen LDL considerably.  3. Oatmeal; Another wonderful food which cuts down LDL because of its soluble fiber. This fiber is also found in apples, prunes, pears, barley and kidney beans.  4. Walnuts, almonds and other tree nuts: They can reduce levels of bad cholesterol.  They are full of mono- and polyunsaturated fatty acids and also help keep blood vessels healthy.  5. Avocados: These are again great foods that improve LDL levels in people who are obese.  # How to control cholesterol: - As we grow older we must start monitoring what we eat. After a certain age, there are some foods which can cause serious illnesses for us. So why take the risk?  # Let's have a look and see what types of food should be avoided to control cholesterol.  1. Liver: It is rich in fat and can increase the LDL levels tremendously.  2. Muffins: If they are made at home in whole milk and eggs, are not at all advisable.  3. Besides, 99% of dairy products are pasteurized, which kills any benefits milk could have. Not to mention, the toxins, hormones and drugs these animals are given are highly concentrated in the milk - which goes inside of YOU! These toxins stress your liver and cause an increase in cholesterol. Adzuki beans. They're all champions at actively lowering LDL (bad) cholesterol http://bit.ly/2ye1X1R. LDL levels of 81 Ground-breaking research published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) studied nearly 9,000 European patients. All had previously suffered heart attacks. The trial found that those who reduced their LDL levels to an average 81 with high-dose statins significantly reduced their risk of major coronary events like heart attacks and strokes at the 4.8 year follow-up compared to patients who reduced their LDL to 104 on usual-dose statin therapy. Lower LDL Levels are better In a JAMA editorial accompanying the study, Christopher P. Cannon, MD, of Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School wrote that aggressive LDL lowering is the ideal – “lower is better.” The JAMA study’s findings echo those of another large 4,162-patient study, published in the New England Journal of Medicine. It concluded that LDL cholesterol levels of 62 were even better than levels of 95 at preventing death, heart attacks, and other cardiovascular-related problems in people with heart disease. Drugs’ negative effects In both studies, mega-doses of statins (a doubling and tripling of regular doses) drove LDL levels way down. But in both studies, mega-doses also caused problems. Suffering from adverse side effects like muscle pain, memory loss, and elevated liver enzymes, patients on the high doses stopped taking their medications at twice the rate of patients on regular doses. Muscle pain, also called myopathy, occurs in 2% to 11% of people treated with statins, reported investigators at the University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics in Madison, and although the pain usually subsides once the statin is discontinued, it can take several months to do so. Like previous studies, the Wisconsin scientists also found that the negative side effects of statins increased as dosages increased. Medication-free alternatives “That’s why drug-free alternatives like the Pritikin Program are so important,” advises Dr. William McCarthy, UCLA School of Public Health and member of the Pritikin Scientific Advisory Board. “For people who cannot tolerate maximum doses of statins, or for those wanting to minimize their dependence on drugs, the Pritikin Program of diet and exercise – or a combination of low-dose statins plus the Pritikin Program – offers a much safer option for lowering LDL cholesterol to levels significantly below 100.” Lowering cholesterol naturally In research on more than 4,500 men and women following the Pritikin Program of diet and exercise, LDL levels plummeted 23%, and in just three weeks. 39% drop in LDL Levels And in a study by UCLA scientists in conjunction with the nonprofit Pritikin Foundation, men and women nearly doubled their reductions in cholesterol, averaging a 39% drop, when they supplemented regular-dose statin therapy with the diet-and-exercise lifestyle of the Pritikin Program.
