Cholesterol is made in your liver and has many important functions. For example, it helps keep the walls of your cells flexible and is needed to make several hormones. However, like anything in the body, too much cholesterol in the wrong places creates problems. Like fat, cholesterol does not dissolve in water. Instead, its transport in the body depends on molecules called lipoproteins, which carry cholesterol, fat and fat-soluble vitamins in the blood. Different kinds of lipoproteins have different effects on health. For example, high levels of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) result in cholesterol deposits in blood vessel walls, which can lead to clogged arteries, strokes, heart attacks and kidney failure. In contrast, high-density lipoprotein (HDL) helps carry cholesterol away from vessel walls and helps prevent these diseases. Here are 6 natural ways to increase the “good” HDL cholesterol and lower the “bad” LDL cholesterol. 1.Focus on Monounsaturated Fats Monounsaturated fats may reduce the oxidation of lipoproteins, which contributes to clogged-arteries. Monounsaturated fats are healthy because they decrease harmful LDL cholesterol, increase good HDL cholesterol and reduce harmful oxidation. few great sources of monounsaturated fats are: olive-oil, canola-oil, tree nuts and avocados. 2.Eat Soluble Fiber Soluble fiber is a group of different compounds in plants that dissolve in water and that humans can’t digest. Foods with a lot of saturated fat include butter, fatty flesh like red-meat, full-fat and low-fat dairy products, palm-oil, and coconut-oil. If you see partially hydrogenated fat in the Ingredient List of a food label, that food has trans fats. 4.Exercise Exercise is a win-win for heart health. Not only does it improve physical fitness and help combat obesity, but it also reduces harmful LDL and increases beneficial HDL. In one study, twelve weeks of combined aerobic and resistance exercise reduced the especially harmful oxidized LDL in 20 overweight women. Legumes help lower total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, blood sugar, and insulin levels, and may even lower cancer risk.

High cholesterol levels are especially troublesome since its symptoms are not easily detected, and they will have to be checked by your doctor. Having high cholesterol levels can lead to a number of different ailments, including plaque build up i the arteries, gallstones, heart attacks, heart disease and decreased blood flow and circulation. Fortunately, we can make dietary changed can decrease high cholesterol levels, along with a change in lifestyle and exercise. Lets discuss some foods that can help to decrease cholesterol levels in the body. 1. First, almonds can help to lower cholesterol levels in the body. Not only that, but they work to reduce “bad” LDL cholesterol while raising “good” HDL cholesterol and are also a great source of healthy unsaturated fats. As well, almonds work to make LDL cholesterol less likely to oxidize. When it does oxidize, this leads to a clogging of the arteries and restricts blood flow to important organs.Try not to overeat almonds for these benefits. 2. Oatmeal can also be helpful for lowering high cholesterol levels when consumed consistently. Oats are a great source of soluble fibre. Animal Protein The saturated fats and “marble fat” found in meat, pork, poultry and shell-fish is horrible for your health and cholesterol levels. I’ve noticed even grass-fed meat and free-range poultry can still cause high cholesterol in some of my patients, especially the “sensitive” ones. Limit your intake and focus more on vegetable proteins and fish - especially wild-caught salmon. Eggs Eggs can be good or bad. All the cholesterol and fat is located in the egg YOLK, which is why most “experts” say you should only consume egg whites. However, most of the nutrients, antioxidants and half the essential amino acids (protein) are also found in the yolk. The problem is when you COOK the yolk - such as hard-boiled, scrambled and fried eggs. The heat oxidizes the egg and damages both the structure of the protein and fat. So the healthiest way to eat eggs is raw or lightly cooked, so the yolk is still runny. Don’t fry it with butter or vegetable fats. And make sure it’s organic, free-range eggs. Baked Foods/Carbs (Snacks Too) Baked foods such as muffins, cakes, breads, donuts, croissants, rolls, cookies, danishes, scones, pie, etc… The types of foods most people eat in the morning when they’re in a rush, or with their coffee or at work as a snack… These are all bad because they contain hydrogenated and saturated fats, as well as dairy. However, cholesterol levels can be reduced when you include the following super 8 foods that lower cholesterol. 1. Oats: Having a bowl of oatmeal or oat-based cereal for breakfast is an easy first step to improving your cholesterol. It provides you with 1g to 2g of soluble fiber and an extra 0.5g each if you add a banana or some strawberries. The daily recommendation for fiber is 20 to 30 grams with 5 to 10 grams obtained from soluble fiber. 2. Barley and other whole grains: These assist in lowering the risk of cardiovascular diseases, just like oats and oat bran, mostly through their supply of soluble fiber. 3. Nuts: Nuts are rich in fiber, vegetable protein, healthy fats, vitamin E, potassium, magnesium, natural plant sterols and many other plant nutrients that are beneficial. Taking about 30-35g of nuts daily could lower cholesterol by up to 5%. 4. Beans and Other Legumes: Beans, lentils, peas and peanuts are also super sources of soluble fiber. According to a study published in The Journal of Nutrition (November 2007), it was discovered that eating half a cup of cooked dried pinto beans (2 grams of soluble fiber) every day for 12 weeks consistently decreased LDL cholesterol by almost 7%. 5. Soy: Soy is another super food that is high in fiber, low in saturated fat and free of cholesterol. It is the only complete plant-based protein, which implies that it’s an equal swap for animal sources like meat and dairy. Substituting foods that are high in saturated fat with daily Soy intake has the ability to lower LDL cholesterol by almost 8 to 10% - according to a study published in The Journal of Nutrition (2010). 6. Vegetable oils: Another way to reduce cholesterol is by cooking with liquid vegetable oils such as sunflower, canola, safflower and others instead of butter or lard. 7. Citrus fruits, Grapes, Apples and Strawberries: These fruits are very rich in pectin, a type of soluble fiber that helps lower LDL. 8. Avocados: Avocados contain monounsaturated fats that help in lowering LDL and increasing HDL, most especially in persons with mildly elevated cholesterol. Add a few slices of avocados to salads and sandwiches, or mash with garlic, salsa and lemon juice for a great guacamole. Instead, its transport in the body depends on molecules called lipoproteins, which carry cholesterol, fat and fat-soluble vitamins in the blood. Different kinds of lipoproteins have different effects on health. For example, high levels of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) result in cholesterol deposits in blood vessel walls, which can lead to clogged arteries, strokes, heart attacks and kidney failure. In contrast, high-density lipoprotein (HDL) helps carry cholesterol away from vessel walls and helps prevent these diseases. Here are 7 natural ways to increase the “good” HDL cholesterol and lower the “bad” LDL cholesterol. 1.Focus on Monounsaturated Fats Monounsaturated fats may reduce the oxidation of lipoproteins, which contributes to clogged-arteries. Especially since heart disease is so prevalent in our country. Dr. Mark Reeves (Host) Surgical Oncologist In fact, one-third of Americans have high LDL cholesterol—the bad kind of cholesterol. Those with high total cholesterol have twice the risk of heart disease compared to people whose cholesterol levels are under 200. Patricia Kelikani (Host) With heart disease being the number one killer in the United States, researchers at Loma Linda University Health advise us to go nuts with our health. Dr. Mark Reeves (Host) Back in 1993, Loma Linda University Health made a landmark discovery that reversed the health advice from the American Heart Association. Up until then, the organization advised the public against eating nuts because of the high fat content. Patricia Kelikani (Host) However, Dr. Joan Sabaté discovered that adding one to two servings of nuts to our daily diets could actually cut our risk of having a heart attack in half. During the initial study, the researchers put subjects on a two-month diet known as the American Heart Association step-one diet to lower cholesterol. Dr. Mark Reeves (Host) Half of those subjects were fed the same diet with 20 percent of the calories coming from walnuts. The following month, the groups switched. Dr. Joan Sabaté LLU Professor of Nutrition & Epidemiology “The walnut diet lowered much more the cholesterol particularly the LDL-cholesterol that is considered the bad cholesterol without changes in the good cholesterol, the HDL cholesterol.” Dr. Mark Reeves (Host) Nuts are rich in unsaturated fat— a healthy type of fat that our bodies need to reduce LDLs, the bad cholesterol in our blood. In addition, walnuts have high levels of omega-3 fatty acids. Omega-3s help lower levels of triglycerides, a type of fat in the bloodstream. But nuts are also loaded with protein. Joan Sabaté “Percent wise and quantity wise it is even greater than the protein that is in meat or in many other animal products. Besides fat and protein, nuts have many other micronutrients such as minerals, vitamins.” Patricia Kelikani (Host) For more than 20 years, Dr. Sabaté has been studying the effect of nuts on our health and summarized that one to two servings of nuts a day lowers cholesterol by 10 percent. Dr. Mark Reeves (Host) So what are today’s health tips? Eat a handful of nuts a day to cut your risk of heart disease in half and reduce your cholesterol.
