The Persians & Greeks: Crash Course World History #5
In which John compares and contrasts Greek civilization and the Persian Empire. Of course we're glad that Greek civilization spawned modern western civilization, right? Maybe not. From Socrates and Plato to Darius and Xerxes, John explains two of the great powers of the ancient world, all WITHOUT the use of footage from 300. Biblical Series I: Introduction to the Idea of God
Lecture I in my Psychological Significance of the Biblical Stories series from May 16th at Isabel Bader Theatre in Toronto. In this lecture, I describe what I consider to be the idea of God, which is at least partly the notion of sovereignty and power, divorced from any concrete sovereign or particular, individual person of power. I also suggest that God, as Father, is something akin to the spirit or pattern inherent in the human hierarchy of authority, which is based in turn on the dominance hierarchies characterizing animals. The Secret to Remembering Vocabulary
http://www.engvid.com/ OMG, there are too many English words to learn! Well, I can help. Watch this video to learn my own trick for remembering new words. In order to show you how this trick works, I will also teach you the following five words: hammered, creamed, bald, beard, and condo. After watching this video, remembering new words will be a piece of cake. Take the quiz here: http://www.engvid.com/the-secret-to-remembering-vocabulary/ Hello. My name is Emma, and in today's video, I will teach you a trick on how to remember vocabulary. So English has the largest vocabulary out of any language. I think it's close to 600,000 words in English. So how are you going to remember so much vocabulary? Well, when I was in China, I created a little trick -- and other people use this trick, too -- that really helped me to remember all the new words I was learning. So in this video, I will teach you this trick. So what you do -- I have a bunch of interesting pictures on the board -- is any time you come up across a new word and you're learning a new word, you need to make a picture in your head of this word. A good idea is to try to think of other words that sound like this word and imagine funny situations in your mind. So what do I mean by that? Well, let me show you. The first word I'm going to teach you today is "bald", "bald", b-a-l-d. What does it mean to be "bald"? It means to have no hair, okay? So if you have no hair, you are "bald". How do you remember this word? Well, if you use my trick, you can imagine a word that sounds like "bald" -- maybe "ball", basketball, soccer ball. So in your mind, I want you to imagine a ball. It can be a basketball, a soccer ball -- any type of ball. Now, imagine the ball with a face. Imagine the ball with no hair on top, maybe a little hair on the side, a little hair here, but no hair on the top. Because "ball" and "bald" sound alike, if you imagine this picture for maybe ten seconds, it will help you to remember it in the future, okay? Think "ball with no hair". Okay. Let's try our second word: "beard". What's a beard? It's the hair that comes off a man's chin -- usually, women don't have beards. So it's the hair that comes down like this. How are we going to remember this word? Well, imagine a man with a beard, and inside the beard is a bird, a little bird, tweet tweet! And what's it doing in the beard? Why, it's drinking beer. Okay? So this little picture is -- don't know if you can see that, but that is beer. So imagine a bird drinking beer. Those two words together -- beer. This isn't beer; this one is. Imagine "bird" and "beer". Together, if you put the words together, they make "beard". A bird drinking beer in a beard. Can you say that fast? "Bird drinking beer in a beard." So maybe, if you picture this for ten seconds, you will remember this word. Okay. Next word I want to teach you today: "creamed". So what does it mean to be "creamed"? "We creamed you guys." "You guys got creamed." It means someone lost a game very badly. If our team creamed your basketball team, your basketball team lost; our team won. So you don't want to be "creamed". If you get "creamed", it's bad. It means you lost, you lose. So how can you remember this? Well, imagine someone -- maybe somebody you don't like, somebody you play basketball against or some sport. Imagine throwing a bunch of ice cream and it hits their face -- because the keyword "cream", "ice cream". So if you can imagine ice cream on someone's face, it will help you to remember the word "creamed". So imagine that for ten seconds. So think "ice cream on face", "creamed".

The Renaissance: Was it a Thing? - Crash Course World History #22
In which John Green teaches you about the European Renaissance. European learning changed the world in the 15th and 16th century, but was it a cultural revolution, or an evolution? We'd argue that any cultural shift that occurs over a couple of hundred years isn't too overwhelming to the people who live through it. In retrospect though, the cultural bloom in Europe during this time was pretty impressive. In addition to investigating what caused the Renaissance and who benefitted from the changes that occurred, John will tell you just how the Ninja Turtles got mixed up in all this. Lessons from the Prophet Daniel: The Truth of the Fourth Beast
This is the second part in the Beyond Today Bible study series: “Lessons from the Prophet Daniel”. The fourth beast of Daniel’s vision is the Roman Empire at it height. Why did Daniel puzzle over this one beast above all the others? The answer lies in understanding the impact of Rome upon the ancient world and the political and religious seeds sown since that time upon Europe and the nations. The impact of the Roman empire on history and Bible prophecy is the story of the modern world. Understanding this fourth beast is a key to understanding today’s headlines. ======== Watch this Bible Study , Read the Transcript or Submit a Comment https://www.ucg.org/beyond-today/beyond-today-bible-study/lessons-from-the-prophet-daniel-the-truth-of-the-fourth-beast?source=youtube ======== Subscribe to Beyond Today Email https://www.ucg.org/subscribe-to-email-updates?source=youtube ======== Watch Archived Beyond Today Bible Study Videos https://www.ucg.org/beyond-today/beyond-today-bible-study?source=youtube ======== Search for a United Church of God Congregation in Your Area https://www.ucg.org/congregations?source=youtube

The French Revolution: Crash Course World History #29
In which John Green examines the French Revolution, and gets into how and why it differed from the American Revolution. Was it the serial authoritarian regimes? The guillotine? The Reign of Terror? All of this and more contributed to the French Revolution not being quite as revolutionary as it could have been. France endured multiple constitutions, the heads of heads of state literally rolled, and then they ended up with a megalomaniacal little emperor by the name of Napoleon. But how did all of this change the world, and how did it lead to other, more successful revolutions around the world? Watch this video and find out. YOGA SUTRAS OF PANTANJALI - FULL AudioBook | Greatest Audio Books
THE YOGA SUTRAS OF PANTANJALI - FULL AudioBook | Greatest AudioBooks 🌟 S P E C I A L O F F E R 🌟 ► try Audiobooks .com 🎧 for FREE! https://bit.ly/2CBueWR ► S H O P great books & gifts: https://www.amazon.com/shop/GreatestAudioBooks - The Yoga tradition is much older, there are references in the Mahābhārata, and the Gitā identifies three kinds of yoga. The Yoga Sūtras codifies the royal or best (rāja) yoga practices, presenting these as an eight-limbed system (ashtānga). The philosophic tradition is related to the Sankhya school. The focus is on the mind; the second sutra defines Yoga – it is the cessation of all mental fluctuations, all wandering thoughts cease and the mind is focused on a single thought. In contrast to the focus on the mind in the Yoga sutras, later traditions of Yoga such as the Hatha yoga focus on more complex asanas or body postures. Patañjali defended in his yoga-treatise several ideas that are not mainstream of either Sankhya or Yoga. He, according to the Iyengar adept, biographer and scholar Kofi Busia, acknowledges the ego not as a separate entity. The subtle body linga sarira he would not regard as permanent and he would deny it a direct control over external matters. This is not in accord with classical Sankhya and Yoga. Although much of the aphorisms in the Yoga Sutra possibly pre-dates Patanjali, it is clear that much is original and it is more than a mere compilation. The clarity and unity he brought to divergent views prevalent till then has inspired a long line of teachers and practitioners up to the present day in which B.K.S. Iyengar is a known defender. With some translators he seems to be a dry and technical propounder of the philosophy, but with others he is an empathic and humorous witty friend and spiritual guide. Patañjali (Sanskrit: पतञ्जलि, IPA: [pət̪əɲɟəli]) is a Sanskrit proper name. Several important Sanskrit works are ascribed to one or more authors of this name, and a great deal of scholarship has been devoted over the last century or so to the issue of disambiguation. Amongst the more important authors called Patañjali are: - The author of the Mahābhāṣya, an advanced treatise on Sanskrit grammar and linguistics framed as a commentary on Kātyāyana's vārttikas (short comments) on Pāṇini's Aṣṭādhyāyī. This Patañjali's life is the only one which can be securely dated (as one of the grammatical examples he uses makes reference to the siege of the town of Sāketā by the Greeks, an event known from other sources to have taken place around 120 BC). - The compiler of the Yoga Sūtras, an important collection of aphorisms on Yoga practice, who according to some historians was a notable person of Samkhya, contemporaneous with Ishvarakrishna's Samkhya-karika around 400 CE. - The author of an unspecified work of medicine (āyurveda). Dr J Rufus Fears - Story of Freedom - (8 of 18) - The Roots of American Liberty
At the time of its inception, the United States was the only functioning democracy in the world. However, this does not mean the founders created the American ideal of freedom ex nihilo. As Dr. Fears argues, they drew on the Old Testament, Greece, Rome, Christianity, and the English tradition of liberty to create a political order of democracy, divided power, and individual dignity. The Story of Freedom in America is a complete, 18-lecture course, free and open to the public. Fears, with his inimitable style and his true wisdom, explores the American experience of freedom from the Revolutionary War to the present day. He tells the stories of struggle, sacrifice, and heroism that created the unique model of American freedom. For more information, visit freedom.ou.edu

Carter finds that he has great strength on this planet, due to its lesser gravity. Carter soon falls in among the Tharks, a nomadic tribe of the planet's warlike, four-armed, green inhabitants. Thanks to his strength and combat abilities he rises in position in the tribe and earns the respect eventually the friendship of Tars Tarkas one of the Thark chiefs. The Tharks subsequently capture Dejah Thoris, Princess of Helium, a member of the humanoid red Martian race. The red Martians inhabit a loose network of city states and control the desert planet's canals, along which its agriculture is concentrated. Carter rescues her from the green men to return her to her people. Mestizo Chronicles: Sources, Readers, Orientations Colloquium at the JCB Library
Saturday, February 13, 2016 John Carter Brown Library, Brown University Providence, Rhode Island The writings of indigenous and mestizo authors are prone to be idealized and sometimes romanticized by contemporary historians who are directly concerned with interrogating colonial hierarchies. The aim of this colloquium is to work towards a more fundamental understanding of these sources by taking the texts themselves as the point of departure, rather than the ethnicity of their authors. What cultural presuppositions and forms of knowledge are inscribed in these works? What are their stylistic or literary models? What are their sources, and how are they transformed? To whom are these texts explicitly and implicitly addressed? How do the authors fashion themselves? Consideration of these questions may lead to more nuanced interpretation of the ideological nature of ‘mestizo chronicles’ and of the agenda of those who produced them.

Jason Zweig: "The Devil's Financial Dictionary and The Intelligent Investor" | Talks at Google
Jason Zweig will discuss his latest book, The Devil's Financial Dictionary, and how he went about distilling everything he had learned in almost three decades as an investing journalist into definitions of Wall Street terms that are, in many cases, only a few words long. Markets are driven much more by psychology and history than by economics. In writing The Devil's Financial Dictionary, Zweig was guided largely by a saying of his father's: "It's remarkable how much you have to learn in order to realize how little you need to know." “This is the most amusing presentation of the principles of finance that I have ever seen.” —Robert J. Shiller, professor of finance, Yale University; Nobel laureate in economics; author of Irrational Exuberance “Part social commentary, part instruction manual, Zweig’s book is must-reading for anyone who presumes or desires to understand the investment world…. Like the book in which they’re contained, each of Zweig’s entries is pointed, witty, and revealing of important and useful truths. The Devil himself, a.k.a., [Ambrose] Bierce, would be proud.” —TIME About the Author Jason Zweig writes a weekly column, "The Intelligent Investor," for The Wall Street Journal. He is the author of The Devil's Financial Dictionary, a satirical glossary of financial terms; Your Money and Your Brain, on the neuroscience and psychology of financial decision-making; and The Little Book of Safe Money, an investing guide. The editor of the revised edition of Benjamin Graham's The Intelligent Investor and co-editor of Benjamin Graham: Building a Profession, Zweig also assisted the Nobel Prize-winning psychologist Daniel Kahneman in writing his book, Thinking, Fast and Slow. Before joining The Wall Street Journal, Zweig worked at Money, Forbes and TIME.
