Depression and anxiety are no strangers to those in the legal profession. Unattended stress, unreasonable demands, unhealthy coping strategies and just dealing with day to day life in the 21st century can lead some of us to the edge. It is a problem that can remain hidden and destroy lives and careers. It is also a problem that can be identified and treated successfully. This CLE will explore anxiety and depression as it relates to legal professionals, and will look at early identification strategies and resources for help. It will also provide tips for helping a colleague and  for navigating the holiday season (and other high stress times) successfully.   Presenters: William J. Kane, a member of the New Jersey Bar and 1969 graduate of Seton Hall University School of Law, is Director of the New Jersey Lawyers Assistance Program. Since 1981, he has served on the adjunct faculty of the Rutgers Center of Alcohol Studies where he teaches "Alcoholism and the Law" and "Counseling the Professional Client." While in private practice, he lectured at New York Law School and held adjunct professor positions at John Jay College of Criminal Justice, Kean College, and graduate school of Montclair State University. He also served as the faculty of College Camerounaia d'Arts et Sciences in Central Africa while in the Peace Corps. Mr. Kane was among the nation's first Certified Employee Assistance Professionals and is a Certified Social Worker. He is the author of several articles, (The Barrister, ABA Young Lawyer Magazine, New Jersey Lawyer) and serves as federal confidentiality regulations consultant for public and private sector programs. He's received numerous awards and was named "Person of the Year" by the NJ Council on Compulsive Gambling. Mr. Kane implemented the first employee assistance program for United Parcel Service and has extensive experience with various alcoholism and drug abuse treatment modalities.   Nancy Stek, MS, LCADC is the Associate Director of the New Jersey Lawyers and New Jersey Judges Assistance Programs.  Her career spans the fields of health care, education and the non-profit sector and she has been a featured speaker at both local and national conferences including the Commission on Lawyers Assistance of the American Bar Association and National Judicial College.  Nancy was a pioneer in the field of Student Assistance in New Jersey and developed the first student assistance program at Whittier College in California.  She also served as lead trainer for First Light Partners, providing on-going training programs for medical professionals and social workers in Ukraine.   An Associate Member of the ABA, Nancy is active on several CoLAP (Commission on Lawyers Assistance Programs) committees including Annual Conference Planning Committee.  She is a licensed addictions counselor (LCADC), a volunteer Disaster Response Crisis  Counselor, A Certified Life Coach, and Certified Hardiness Trainer.  Nancy also serves on the Board for the Adult Substance Abuse Program (ASAP) at Middlesex County Adult Correctional Institution and on the Board of the New Jersey Repertory Company.

In this video, we examine the figures as well as discuss the problems that are still present. It has recently been reported that insurer Canada Life have calculated a 6% rise in the number of the UK working population who have access to workplace benefits. It is suggested that this equates to approximately one million more employees who have access compared to last year. Despite this increase, it is reported that problems still remain present. Suggestions are made that those suffering with stress receive little assistance from their employers. Reportedly, 49% of respondents experienced stress and only 42% of those suffering received help from their organisation. Carol Porter, a spokesperson for the Health Insurance Group recently said: We are finding that many of our clients are increasingly recognising the importance of workplace benefits and are asking for our advice on a range of employee benefits. Not only does it help them to attract and retain the best employees but having healthy, engaged and productive employees also enhances their competitive advantage. Employee Assistance Programmes are an example of a relatively low cost support tool for companies, which offer help and provide tips and ideas that companies can implement to help employees with stress, including providing helplines for employees to contact should they require counselling support. After Harvey caused extensive damage in the Houston area, the EOC provided support to the local G4S team by coordinating travel and deployment for more than 400 security officers being sent to service Houston-area clients. Then when “extremely dangerous” Category 4 Hurricane Irma threatened landfall in Florida in early September, the same EOC team braced for impact in the Jupiter, Florida center, while continuing to provide 24/7 communications and customer support in the face of two historic hurricanes.
