Delivering Performance Appraisals Part 2

02:55
http://blog.hr360.com/hr-blog/giving-negative-feedback-during-performance-reviews-part-2-video-blog Video Highlights: 0:02 Today, we’re going to discuss negative feedback and the role that it plays in the performance appraisal. 0:46 Addressing performance issues head-on is important both for helping your employees improve, and for creating records that allow you to track an employee’s progress and support any adverse personnel decisions that may become necessary—such as a disciplinary action or termination. 1:25 Negative feedback is an essential part of how we, as humans, learn. 1:31 That being said, our human “negativity bias” can make it hard to process criticism and to keep it in perspective. 1:45 The natural defense mechanisms that may arise when an employee hears negative feedback—especially if there’s a lot of it—could hamper the effectiveness of your review and damage the employee’s morale. 2:00 It's important to offer employees ongoing feedback throughout the year—so that, come review time, there are few (if any) surprises.

FILM DESCRIPTION: Peter Gibbons (Ron Livingston) is a computer programmer working for Initech in Houston. Every day, he and his friends Samir (Ajay Naidu) and Michael Bolton (David Herman as not THAT Michael Bolton), suffer endless indignities and humiliations in their soulless workspace from their soulless boss, Bill Lumbergh (Gary Cole). For Peter, stuck in his cookie-cutter apartment with paper-thin walls and IKEA furniture, every day is worse than the one before it -- so every day is the worst of his life. To cap it off, Initech has hired a pair of "efficiency experts" to downsize the company. One Friday night, Peter's soon to be ex-girlfriend Anne (Alexandra Wentworth) forces him to go to an occupational hypnotherapist to relieve work stress. While Peter is under hypnosis, the therapist keels over and dies. As he never snaps out of his hypnotic state, Peter has a new outlook on life. If something annoys him, he just ignores it or walks away from it. He is completely relaxed and enjoying life for the first time in a long time. On Monday, Peter skips work and sleeps in. He gets up for lunch and drives down to a restaurant next to his office and asks the waitress he's had a crush on, Joanna (Jennifer Aniston), on a date. When Peter stops into the office to pick up his organizer, he's called in to talk to the efficiency experts. Relaxed and friendly, Peter charms them as he describes everything wrong with the office, including his boss. Even as Peter now appears at work only as the mood strikes him, the experts decide he's management material and give him a promotion even as they lay off the hardworking Samir and Michael. Peter then convinces his friends to exact revenge on Initech based upon an idea from Superman III. Not everything works out quite as planned. Office Space originated from writer/director Mike Judge's first animated short of the same name, created in 1991. The short was about Milton (reproduced in the film by Stephen Root), a damaged office drone whose complaints and threats about his sufferings go unheeded. The Complete Guide to Fasting: How To Heal Your Body Through Intermittent, Alternate-Day, and...

01:14:16
https://bengreenfieldfitness.com/fasting Thousands of books have been written about the latest and greatest diets that will help people lose weight and improve health. But a key element in any successful nutritional health program is a tried-and-true method that most people haven’t thought about—yet it could be revolutionary for taking health to the next level. This ancient secret is fasting. Fasting is not about starving oneself. When done right, it’s an incredibly effective therapeutic approach that produces amazing results regardless of diet plan. In fact, Toronto-based nephrologist Dr. Jason Fung has used a variety of fasting protocols with more than 1,000 patients, with fantastic success. Dr. Fung earned his medical degree at the University of Toronto, where he also completed his internal medicine residency before heading to the University of California, Los Angeles, for his fellowship in nephrology. He currently practices as a kidney specialist in Toronto. He is the chief of the department of medicine at Scarborough General Hospital. In addition to clinical medicine, he is also on the board of directors of Low Carb Diabetes Association and the scientific editor of the Journal of Insulin Resistance. During the course of treating thousands of patients, it became clear to Dr. Fung that the epidemic of type 2 diabetes and obesity was getting worse. The prevailing dietary recommendations to reduce dietary fat and calories were clearly ineffective. He founded the Intensive Dietary Management Program to provide a unique treatment focus for type 2 diabetes and obesity: rather than focusing on medications, this clinic focuses on dietary changes that are simple yet effective. In The Complete Guide to Fasting: Heal Your Body Through Intermittent, Alternate-Day, and Extended Fasting, he has teamed up with international bestselling author and veteran health podcaster Jimmy Moore to explain what fasting is really about, why it’s so important, and how to fast in a way that improves health. Together, they make fasting as a therapeutic approach both practical and easy to understand. During our discussion, you'll discover: -Why Jason and Ben have different takes on whether or not to eat breakfast...[8:25] -The five different physiological stages of fasting...[16:45] -Why growth hormone actually goes up, not down, when you fast, and how the body uses this mechanism to maintain muscle...[30:15]  -Why fasting doesn't actually decrease your metabolic rate or cause you to go into to starvation mode...[33:20] -What kind of scenario would actually cause your metabolic rate to decrease with calorie restriction...[37:10] -Why most of the Biggest Loser contestants actually regained their weight after the show...[44:35] -The reason hunger gradually disappears during a fast...[49:55] -The shocking things that happen to your body when you do an extended fast...[56:35] -What refeeding syndrome is...[63:00] -And much more... How does Creatine work?

01:56
http://www.axislabs.net/pure-micronized-creatine-monohydrate.html Creatine is a natural compound made in the body and is derived from the diet through meat products. In the body, Creatine is changed into a molecule called phosphocreatine which serves as a storage reservoir for regenerating ATP. ATP is the chemical source of energy for muscle contraction and quick energy. Phosphocreatine is an important source of ATP energy in muscle tissue and studies have shown that Creatine can increase the performance of athletes in activities that require quick bursts of energy, such as sprinting and weight lifting. Creatine supplementation combined with strength training has been shown to cause dramatic improvements in muscle hypertrophy (size) and strength through cell volumization and increased protein synthesis. Now that you know how essential Creatine is to your workout, turn to the brand that guarantees quality and results. Grab your supply of Axis Labs Creatine Monohydrate today and take your training to the next level. Demand more from your supplements. Demand Axis Labs.

High-Performance JDBC by Vlad Mihalcea

01:05:23
JDBC has been around for a long time but because the database interaction happens through higher abstraction API (such as JPA/Hibernate or jOOQ), it’s easy to forget that the actual communication plays by the database driver and the database engine rules. This presentation goes through the most common sources of performance bottlenecks: database connection management, batch updates, statement caching, result set fetching and concurrency control mechanisms with practical references for the most common database systems: Oracle, SQL Server, PostgreSQL and MySQL.

How to cope with anxiety | Olivia Remes | TEDxUHasselt

15:16
Anxiety is one of most prevalent mental health disorders, with 1 out of 14 people around the world being likely affected. Leading up to conditions such as depression, increased risk for suicide, disability and requirement of high health services, very few people who often need treatment actually receive it. In her talk “How to cope with anxiety”, Olivia Remes of the University of Cambridge will share her vision on anxiety and will unravel ways to treat and manage this health disorder. Arguing that treatments such as psychotherapy and medication exist and often result in poor outcome and high rates of relapses, she will emphasise the importance of harnessing strength in ourselves as we modify our problem-coping mechanisms. Olivia will stress that by allowing ourselves to believe that what happens in life is comprehensive, meaningful, and manageable, one can significantly improve their risk of developing anxiety disorders. there is something I want to point out that will help us decide the control strategy for this improvement an electronic form can be programmed to require certain fields to be completed before you are allowed to submit it based on that information what is the best strategy to use right in this case a technique of control called mistake proofing can be employed which essentially means that a mistake can never happen because the form will never reach the data entry associate unless it is completed fully Six Sigma is a type of quality control management that is quickly becoming an essential component of many companies who want to succeed. BEMER Product Presentation & Overview - George Gasich

37:29
This is a comprehensive product presentation of the BEMER Vascular Therapy Technology and the benefits of use on people, plants and animals. Physical Vascular Therapy is used in a diversity of fields today. The improvement of circulation at the microvascular level, i.e. blood flow to the smallest blood vessels, benefits your health, your immune system and your overall sense of well-being in a variety of ways. Based on years of experience, BEMER has continued developing Physical Vascular Therapy – making some ground-breaking findings on the biorhythm of local and higher level regulatory processes. An effective stimulation of circulation at the micro vessel level supports the body’s most important control mechanisms for healing, recovery and regeneration processes, and can also be used to enhance numerous treatments and indications. A large number of healthcare-related problems, are not caused by the general failure of the organism's control systems. In fact, the opposite holds true. The control systems continue to work – they just work in the wrong place, at the wrong time or with dysfunctional biorhythms. For this reason, the aim of any therapeutic procedure must be to stimulate the body's own regulatory mechanisms in such a way that the dysfunction at hand can be brought under control by the organism itself using the natural mechanisms in place. BEMER Physical Vascular Therapy uses electromagnetically transmitted signals to stimulate the pumping action of the smallest blood vessels, enabling the re-normalization of microvascular blood flow. The body's cells are better supplied and are able to perform their various functions. On the whole, BEMER Physical Vascular Therapy supports the body's control mechanisms for regeneration and rehabilitation processes. The therapy can be used as an alleviating measure, for example to: -improve the supply to organs and tissue, thereby aiding regeneration, -reduce susceptibility for infection, -support the immune system, -increase physical performance, -increase mental performance, -generate physical and mental performance reserves, -reduce the consequences of stress, -reduce burnout. However, not even BEMER Physical Vascular Therapy can prevent or cure burnout. What the therapy does provide, however, is support for microvascular blood flow, thereby assisting the body in performing key functions, among them recovery, sleep and regeneration, and in the production of physical and mental performance reserves. This is a contribution not to be underestimated when helping yourself in connection with burnout. BEMER Physical Vascular Therapy uses electromagnetically transmitted signals to stimulate the pumping action of the smallest blood vessels, enabling the re-normalization of microvascular blood flow. The body's cells are better supplied and are able to perform their various functions. Diseases and pain can be better fought with the help of BEMER Physical Vascular Therapy, the healing process for wounds can be sped up, energy can be provided for physical and mental activities, and regenerative processes can be assisted. Even in sports, be it professional or amateur, BEMER Physical Vascular Therapy can provide valuable support. Adequate blood flow through the microvessels enables shorter warm-up and wind-down phases, faster regeneration, and therefore also more effective training units. It is often even possible to speed up the healing process of microinjuries. On the whole, BEMER Physical Vascular Therapy supports the body's control mechanisms for regeneration and rehabilitation processes. It is an effective alleviating measure to: -improve the supply to organs and tissue, thereby aiding regeneration, -reduce susceptibility for infection, -support the immune system, -increase physical performance, -increase mental performance, -reduce the consequences of stress. As previously stated, BEMER Physical Vascular Therapy also achieves astonishing performance in sporting activities. It can increase the maximum intensity of the exercise, improve the effectiveness of training, shorten regeneration phases in sports training, and reduce the risk of injury.

What Can Buddhist Meditation Teach Us About Psychedelic Science? - Katherine MacLean

29:41
http://psychedelicscience.org Help us caption and translate this video on Amara.org:‪ ‬http://amara.org/v/CbC6/ What Can Buddhist Meditation Teach Us About Psychedelic Science? Katherine MacLean, PhD Abstract: An increasingly large body of scientific evidence indicates that various types of mental training can improve cognitive performance, psychological well-being and brain function. In particular, meditation techniques drawn from the Buddhist tradition have proven effective for cultivating a calm mind, open heart and healthy body. The re-packaging of ancient Buddhist practices into a suite of modern therapeutic tools is one of the great success stories of so-called complementary and alternative medicine. What, then, can Buddhist meditation teach us about psychedelic science? While evidence is accumulating that psychedelic compounds can promote long-term improvements in behaviors, attitudes and well-being, there remain obstacles to the acceptance of psychedelics as modern medicine. In this talk, I will review and compare data from previous longitudinal studies of meditation and psilocybin, present preliminary findings from ongoing research examining the effects of psilocybin in long-term meditation practitioners, and discuss future directions for the use psychedelics and meditation to promote optimal health and well-being. Katherine MacLean, PhD, is an Instructor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, where she conducts research on psilocybin and meditation. As a graduate student at the University of California, Davis, Katherine was supported by a National Science Foundation research fellowship to study changes in behavior and brain function during three months of intensive meditation training. After obtaining her PhD in psychology in 2009, she joined the Behavioral Pharmacology Research Unit at Johns Hopkins as a postdoctoral research fellow. Since 2009, Katherine has trained with Roland Griffiths, Matthew Johnson, Bill Richards, and Mary Cosimano on studies of psilocybin and other hallucinogens (Salvia divinorum) and has guided nearly 40 psilocybin sessions. She is currently investigating the intersection between psilocybin and meditation, including potential brain mechanisms and therapeutic applications. Outside of research, Katherine practices daily meditation, occasional handstands, and perpetual astonishment. More videos available at http://psychedelicscience.org At Psychedelic Science 2013, over 100 of the world's leading researchers and more than 1,900 international attendees gathered to share recent findings on the benefits and risks of LSD, psilocybin, MDMA, ayahuasca, ibogaine, 2C-B, ketamine, DMT, marijuana, and more, over three days of conference presentations, and two days of pre- and post-conference workshops.

How to Make High Performance Sound Absorption Panels for $5

08:38
In this video I explore the possibility of making DIY sound absorption panels on a budget, later comparing them to much more expensive acoustic foam. The results are pretty amazing! There have been many comments pointing out that my test only measures transmission and not reflection, so is essentially unsuitable for my initial testing goal. While this is partly true, testing reflection is pretty difficult to do in a home environment, and the only way to do it that I can think of would be to spend a long time in the middle of a field with a powerful speaker and mic rig, which is really beyond the scope of what I was prepared to do for the video. My tests are not rendered pointless however - it would do no good to have only measured reflection, as the thinnest lightest material would have won (like foam), as nothing would have bounced back. Reflection and transmission need to be tested together to measure how much sound passes through, and how much sound is reflected back - this should give an indication of how much sound is absorbed by a given material. Regardless, only testing the transmission doesn't affect the outcome of the project at all, as any sound waves reflected by the panels themselves would have theoretically bounced off the wall anyway - again this is why reflection wasn't tested, as it doesn't matter so much for a panel setup (though would matter very much for a vocal booth). Open to hear any thoughts about it though! Keep up the great discussion. :)

Ray Dalio: "Principles: Life and Work" | Talks at Google

01:37:13
In 1975, Ray Dalio founded an investment firm, Bridgewater Associates, out of his two-bedroom apartment in New York City. Forty years later, Bridgewater has made more money for its clients than any other hedge fund in history, and grown into the fifth most important private company in the United States, according to Fortune magazine. In his new book "Principles", Dalio shares what he’s learned over the course of his remarkable career, arguing that life, management, economics, and investing can all be systemized into rules, and understood like machines. The book’s hundreds of practical lessons, which are built around his cornerstones of “radical truth” and “radical transparency,” offers a clear, straightforward approach to decision-making that Dalio believes anyone can apply, no matter what they’re seeking to achieve. Moderated by Jordan Thibodeau.

Unconventional Ways to WIN with Rand Fishkin | Chase Jarvis LIVE

01:37:49
This week on the show we’ve got serial entrepreneur, marketer extraordinaire and SEO genius Rand Fishkin. Among other things, the guy is an online content legend, having built the legendary MOZ, one of the first online resources / communities helping creators optimize for SEO (yes search engine optimization...aka if you make content, it's helping your people find you on the internet) and now he’s got a new company you’ve gotta know about, and a new BOOK, called Lost & Founder - aimed at helping all of us creators and entrepreneurs find our way. SUCH A USEFUL BOOK. But even more than the “what” Rand does…it’s the HOW he does it that I find completely extraordinary. Everything, it seems, has been non-traditional. From college dropout to serial entrepreneur. Join us on this conversational journey as we dispel startup culture tropes, ‘best practices' and fight back against “traditional” wisdom. A few of my favorite takeaways: * There are three key components to building successful and enjoyable content: build on a medium that you are passionate about, create something of unique value, and put the content where your audience actually hangs out. Sounds easy, but Rand is unapologetic and VERY helpful in guiding us you understand just how to get this right... * It’s been a recurring theme on this show that taking care of yourself with good habits- sleep, exercise, and not overworking yourself actually lead to your best work. The idea that overworking yourself will lead to success and happiness is misguided at best. Rand has solutions for you. * The most important things to be tracking from potential clients and followers are not Twitter or Instagram followers. It’s not likes or shares. It’s something else that is a leading indicator to be in control of your business growth on your own terms… the answer? Listen and find out ;) Enjoy! -- ► Useful? 2018 Isaac Asimov Memorial Debate: Artificial Intelligence

02:02:21
Isaac Asimov’s famous Three Laws of Robotics might be seen as early safeguards for our reliance on artificial intelligence, but as Alexa guides our homes and automated cars replace human drivers, are those Three Laws enough? Neil deGrasse Tyson, Frederick P. Rose Director of the Hayden Planetarium, hosts and moderates a lively discussion about how A.I. is opening doors to limitless possibilities, and if we’re ready for them. The 2018 Isaac Asimov Memorial Debate took place at the Museum on February, 13, 2018. For a full transcript of this debate, visit: https://www.amnh.org/explore/amnh.tv Listen to a podcast version on our blog: https://www.amnh.org/explore/news-blogs/podcasts/2018-isaac-asimov-memorial-debate-artificial-intelligence Or search for Science@AMNH on iTunes, Soundcloud, or wherever you get your podcasts. 2018 Asimov Panelists: John Giannandrea Senior Vice President of Engineering, Google Helen Greiner Co-Founder, iRobot; Founder, CyPhy Works Ruchir Puri Chief Architect, IBM Watson Max Tegmark Professor of Physics, Massachusetts Institute of Technology; President, Future of Life Institute Michael P. Wellman Professor of Computer Science and Engineering, University of Michigan For more information on upcoming events at the Museum, visit AMNH.org/calendar The late Dr. Isaac Asimov, one of the most prolific and influential authors of our time, was a dear friend and supporter of the American Museum of Natural History. In his memory, the Hayden Planetarium is honored to host the annual Isaac Asimov Memorial Debate — generously endowed by relatives, friends, and admirers of Isaac Asimov and his work — bringing the finest minds in the world to the Museum each year to debate pressing questions on the frontier of scientific discovery. Proceeds from ticket sales of the Isaac Asimov Memorial Debates benefit the scientific and educational programs of the Hayden Planetarium. 2017 Isaac Asimov Memorial Debate: De-Extinction https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_LnAt... 2016 Isaac Asimov Memorial Debate: Is the Universe a Simulation? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wgSZA... 2015 Isaac Asimov Memorial Debate: Water, Water https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FSF79... 2014 Isaac Asimov Memorial Debate: Selling Space https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GbmFe... 2013 Isaac Asimov Memorial Debate: The Existence of Nothing https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1OLz6... 2012 Isaac Asimov Memorial Debate: Faster Than the Speed of Light https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5qlLW... 2011 Isaac Asimov Memorial Debate: The Theory of Everything https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Eb8_3... Dr Who Review, Part 3 - The Patrick Troughton Era

The third episode in my ongoing series of reviews, with analysis, of the BBC science-fiction show, Doctor Who. In this part, the era of the Second Doctor, Patrick Troughton, is considered. We take a look how the decision to recast the lead was made, and how social concerns influenced the development of a key enemy, before looking in depth at two of what I consider standout stories from this era.
