Millions of Americans take over-the-counter vitamins and minerals every day, in hopes that it will boost their health. Now, new research shows they may do the opposite when it comes to preventing deadly diseases. The American Association for Cancer Research conducted a study, dating back 20 years. What it found was alarming. "Any vitamin that you take without knowing what your requirements are, what your nutritional intake is can be a problem," says Dr. George Hughes, of Hughes Family Medicine in Niskayuna. Researchers from the University of Colorado Cancer Center found supplementing your diet with vitamins and minerals is unlikely to decrease the risk of developing cancer. It also found that in some cases it can even increase it if you don't follow the recommended amount. Many people take Beta-Carotene to help improve vision, and boost immunity. But, according to this study, if it's taken in excess it can also increase the risk of lung cancer and heart disease by 20%. The Study also found that men who take an excess of Vitamin E were at a greater risk for developing prostate cancer. "Taking vitamin E just randomly without knowing how much and what you need can be a problem," says Dr. Hughes. Dianne Nolin is a pharmacist at Marra's Pharmacy in Cohoes, and say this study should serve as a reminder that you don't need to cut supplements out of your diet completely, just follow the recommended dosage. She goes on to say that the best nutrition comes from healthy foods, not a pill. "I think it will probably have an impact, and maybe certainly for someone that has been thinking 'a little more of this' would not do them any harm, they might suddenly hold back and follow the guidelines on the bottle," she says. This study looked at over 300,000 patients who were given either a supplement of a placebo over a 10 year period.

In certain studies, Americans has been found to be the #1 population in vitamin D deficiency. Some of the main symptoms of vitamin D deficiency are a weakened immune system, candida or bacterial overgrowth, emotional ups and downs, hormone imbalance, trouble putting on muscle or losing weight, weakened bones or teeth, cancer, heart disease, or diabetes. Vitamin D supports having a healthy immune response, digestive health, hormone balance, and more. The biggest causes of vitamin D deficiency are not getting enough sunlight, certain chemicals from plastic bottles (bpa), and toxicity. Try to get outside everyday for about 20-30 minutes of natural sunlight. Certain foods that are sources of vitamin D are wild caught fish, raw fermented milk, mushrooms, and eggs. However, there are small amounts in the food you eat. For a good supplement, I would recommend a high quality vitamin D supplement. You don’t want to take vitamin D2, but you do want to take vitamin D3. For supplementation, take about 2000-5000 IUs a day. However, if you have a severe deficiency, then for 1-2 months, you may take 5000 IUs twice daily. Lastly, you want to take your vitamin D3 with some form of fat like coconut oil or avocado to help absorption in your body.
