The Color of Education

01:44:37
Nikole Hannah-Jones has spent years chronicling the way official policy has created-and maintains-racial segregation in housing and schools. Throughout her time at New York Times Magazine, her deeply personal reports on the black experience in America have offered a compelling case for addressing racial injustice and equity. She was named a 2017 MacArthur Genius Grant Fellow (one of only 24 people chosen, globally) for "reshaping national conversations around education reform" and for her reporting on racial re-segregation in our schools. This is her latest honor in a growing list of notable accolades including a Peabody, a Polk Award, and, in 2017, a National Magazine Award for her story on choosing a school for her daughter in a segregated city. She is currently writing a book on school segregation called The Problem We All Live With, to be published on the One World imprint of Penguin/Random House. Cosponsored by Duke Policy Bridge, the Cook Center for Social Equity, and the Public School Forum of NC, "An Evening with Nikole Hannah-Jones" is the inaugural event of their upcoming Color of Education annual summit, a statewide convening on race and education in North Carolina. In 2019 and beyond, "Color of Education" (#ColorofEducation) will evolve into a yearly, day-long summit of workshops and conversations that bring together educators, policymakers, national experts and other key stakeholders focused on achieving racial equity in education. https://sanford.duke.edu/policy-connect/events/color-education-2018-evening-nikole-hannah-jones

SXSWedu 2014 - Bridging the Digital Divide with BYOD Equity

01:09
Click here to vote for this panel: http://panelpicker.sxsw.com/vote/21829 A current trend in educational technology is for school districts to adopt a policy of Bring Your Own Device (BYOD), also known as Bring Your Own Technology (BYOT). An increasing number of school districts are encouraging BYOD as a way to address the growing need for technology tools that transform learning experiences. However, a wide gap exists between students who have access to personal technology resources and those who do not. This panel discussion will help identify the various forms of inequity that may widen the digital divide and will also share specific experiences of how personal technology devices have improved educational equity through proactive district policies, engaging classroom instruction, and community resources. We will explore specific, practical strategies for sustaining engagement in the classroom; maximizing administrative efficiency; and promoting a higher level of connectedness between schools and the community.

Part1- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xMzBE... Part3- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qVoDX... Written in 1948, 1984 was George Orwell's chilling prophecy about the future. And while the year 1984 has come and gone, Orwell's narrative is timelier than ever. 1984 presents a startling and haunting vision of the world, so powerful that it is completely convincing from start to finish. HOW TO ANALYZE PEOPLE ON SIGHT | Audiobook with subtitles | Human Analysis, Psychology

06:50:36
In this popular American book from the 1920s, accomplished public speaker and self-help charlatan Elsie Lincoln Benedict outlines her pseudo-scientific system of "Human Analysis". She proposes that, within the human race, five sub-types have developed through evolutionary processes, each with its own distinct character traits and corresponding outward appearance. She offers to teach the reader how to recognise these five types of people and understand their innate differences. Her ideas have never been taken seriously by the scientific community, but this book is considered a classic within its genre and remains in print today. A Failing Grade? Addressing Opportunity and Achievement Gaps in Public Education

01:24:53
https://diversity.umn.edu/criticalconversations The achievement gap is the statistically significant difference between white students and students of color in terms of test scores, grade point averages, graduation rates, college attendance, and other metrics. Embarrassingly, the US Department of Education describes Minnesota’s achievement gap as one of the widest in the country. Join this discussion to examine contributing causes such as food insecurity, inadequate family support, dearth of economic resources, as well as remnants of systemic racism in public school classrooms. Engage in a conversation about current and proposed solutions based on academic/community partnerships, support for better teacher training and diversification, family support programs and other attempts to close what may better be described as an opportunity and resource gap rather than simply an achievement gap. Panelists: Lisa Sayles-Adams, Assistant Superintendent, K8 and Middle Schools, St. Paul Public Schools, District 625; Peter Demerath, Associate Professor, Organizational Leadership and Development, University of Minnesota College of Education and Human Development. Moderator: Michael Goh, Associate Vice Provost, OED, and Associate Professor, University of Minnesota College of Education and Human Development.

Hungary | Wikipedia audio article

This is an audio version of the Wikipedia Article: Hungary Listening is a more natural way of learning, when compared to reading. Written language only began at around 3200 BC, but spoken language has existed long ago. Learning by listening is a great way to: - increases imagination and understanding - improves your listening skills - improves your own spoken accent - learn while on the move - reduce eye strain Now learn the vast amount of general knowledge available on Wikipedia through audio (audio article). You could even learn subconsciously by playing the audio while you are sleeping! If you are planning to listen a lot, you could try using a bone conduction headphone, or a standard speaker instead of an earphone. Spanning 93,030 square kilometres (35,920 sq mi) in the Carpathian Basin, it borders Slovakia to the north, Ukraine to the northeast, Austria to the northwest, Romania to the east, Serbia to the south, Croatia to the southwest, and Slovenia to the west. With about 10 million inhabitants, Hungary is a medium-sized member state of the European Union. The official language is Hungarian, which is the most widely spoken Uralic language in the world. Hungary's capital and its largest city and metropolis is Budapest. Other major urban areas include Debrecen, Szeged, Miskolc, Pécs and Győr. The territory of modern Hungary was for centuries inhabited by a succession of peoples, including Celts, Romans, Germanic tribes, Huns, West Slavs and the Avars. The foundations of the Hungarian state was established in the late ninth century AD by the Hungarian grand prince Árpád following the conquest of the Carpathian Basin. His great-grandson Stephen I ascended the throne in 1000, converting his realm to a Christian kingdom. By the 12th century, Hungary became a regional power, reaching its cultural and political height in the 15th century. Following the Battle of Mohács in 1526, Hungary was partially occupied by the Ottoman Empire (1541–1699). It came under Habsburg rule at the turn of the 18th century, and later joined Austria to form the Austro–Hungarian Empire, a major European power. The Austro-Hungarian Empire collapsed after World War I, and the subsequent Treaty of Trianon established Hungary's current borders, resulting in the loss of 71% of its territory, 58% of its population, and 32% of ethnic Hungarians. Following the tumultuous interwar period, Hungary joined the Axis Powers in World War II, suffering significant damage and casualties. Hungary became a satellite state of the Soviet Union, which contributed to the establishment of a socialist republic spanning four decades (1949–1989). The country gained widespread international attention as a result of its 1956 revolution and the seminal opening of its previously-restricted border with Austria in 1989, which accelerated the collapse of the Eastern Bloc. On 23 October 1989, Hungary became a democratic parliamentary republic. In the 21st century, Hungary is a middle power and has the world's 57th largest economy by nominal GDP, as well as the 58th largest by PPP, out of 191 countries measured by IMF. As a substantial actor in several industrial and technological sectors, it is the world's 35th largest exporter and 34th largest importer of goods. Hungary is an OECD high-income economy with a very high standard of living. It keeps up a social security and universal health care system, and a tuition-free university education. Hungary performs well in international rankings: it is 20th in quality of life, 24th in the Good Country Index, 28th in inequality-adjusted human development, 32nd in the Social Progress Index, 33rd in the Global Innovation Index and ranks as the 15th safest country in the world. Hungary joined the European Union in 2004 and has been part of the Schengen Area since 2007. Hungary is a member of the United Nations, NATO, WTO, World Bank, the AIIB, the Council of Europe, the Visegrád Group and more. Well known for its rich cultural history, Hungary has contributed significantly to arts, music, literature, sports and science and technology. Hungary is the 11th most popular country as a tourist destination in Europe, attracting 14.3 million international tourists in 2015. It is home to the largest thermal water cave system and the second largest thermal lake in the world, the largest lake in Central Europe and the largest natural grasslands in Europe.

What is Special Learning? | Definition of Special Learning | Special Learning Definition

37:49
Special education (also known as special needs education, aided education, exceptional education or Special Ed) is the practice of educating students with special educational needs in a way that addresses their individual differences and needs. Ideally, this process involves the individually planned and systematically monitored arrangement of teaching procedures, adapted equipment and materials, and accessible settings. These interventions are designed to help individuals with special needs achieve a higher level of personal self-sufficiency and success in school and in their community, that may not be available if the student were only given access to a typical classroom education. ………………………………………………………………………………….. Panel - The US Elections: Just Entertainment, Festival of Dangerous Ideas 2012 (Ideas at the House)

01:00:32
As the world watches, Barack Obama and Mitt Romney will contest the US Presidential Elections on November 6. But does the outcome really matter that much? First in the primaries and now in hand-to-hand combat, the elections seem more like a drama starring the celebrity-in-chief, where thanks to the loosening of limits on donations, even the budgets will approach blockbuster proportions. While Romney and Obama try to define their differences for the extremes of their electoral base, and on domestic issues, will it make any difference to the rest of the world who wins? Or even to the majority of Americans?
