Pancreatic Cancer Diary, Part 11

08:00
My cousin, Dario Darias, was a husband, father, brother, U.S. Navy Corpsman (assigned to Marine Corps), U.S. Army Medic, volunteer firefighter, Coast Guard Auxiliary member, a Mason and he loved to ride his 2009 Yamaha XV1. On July 3, 2015 he was diagnosed with stage IV pancreatic cancer. The next day he asked me to record this video diary. I thought this was going to be a long-term project focusing on a 49-year-old man fighting a disease. I was wrong.

Early Warning Signs of Pancreatic Cancer

06:08
Early Warning Signs of Pancreatic Cancer Diabetes, especially if it comes on suddenly. Recently, the Mayo Clinic published startling research showing that 40 percent of pancreatic cancer patients had been diagnosed with diabetes one to two years before discovering they had a pancreatic tumor. Researchers believe the diabetes is caused by tumors that simply haven't been detected yet. The problem is, diabetes is very common, and the majority of diabetes isn't pancreatic cancer, so doctors are trying to develop screening tools to tell the difference. Right now, they say family history is an important clue. If you're diagnosed with diabetes that seems to come on suddenly and you have no family history of diabetes, bring this to your doctor's attention and ask for further screening for pancreatic cancer. Yellowing of the eyes or skin. Even a small pancreatic tumor can block the bile duct in the head of the pancreas, causing bile to build up. This causes jaundice. Itchy skin, palms, and soles of feet. A little-known side-effect of jaundice is itchy hands and feet. It's due to a skin reaction to the bilirubin, the yellowish brown liver chemical that causes jaundice. Lack of appetite. An Italian study found that six to eight months before being diagnosed with pancreatic tumors, patients reported a sudden drop in their appetite and a tendency to feel full after eating very little. Changes in taste. In the same Italian study, some of the patients surveyed said they'd suddenly lost their taste for coffee, wine, and smoking. In fact, they said, they felt "disgust" for the smell and taste of coffee and alcohol. Abdominal pain. Pancreatic cancer sufferers remember this pain as a gnawing pain, rather than a sharp cramp or ache, and it radiates toward the back. A characteristic clue: the pain goes away when you lean forward. An enlarged gall bladder. The same blockage of the bile duct that causes jaundice can also cause an enlarged gallbladder, as the bile builds up behind the duct. The good news is that an enlarged gallbladder can be seen on imaging tests, and it may even be possible for a doctor to feel it during a physical exam. Pale, floating, smelly stools. If a pancreatic tumor prevents digestive enzymes from reaching the intestine, the result is an inability to digest fatty foods. So you end up with loose, smelly "floaters" as a result of the excess fat. Doctors say this symptom, in particular, can be an early clue and is too often overlooked. Dark, tarry stools. Bleeding in the upper intestines causes this symptom. Sudden, unexplained weight loss. Weight loss is not always, as many people mistakenly believe, a sign of advanced cancer that's spread to the liver. It can also happen because a lack of pancreatic enzymes is causing fat to pass through the body undigested. New videos everyday! 6 Warning Signs and Symptoms of Pancreatic Cancer, No 5 is Shocking

05:38
Descriptions of Warning symptoms of Pancreatic Cancer: 6 Warning Signs and Symptoms of Pancreatic Cancer, No 5 is Shocking It accounts for about 3 percent of all cancers in the United States, but 7 percent of cancer deaths. Pancreatic cancer begins in the tissues of your pancreas, a pear-shaped organ located behind the lower part of your stomach Pancreatic cancer is difficult to detect early and it typically spreads rapidly, affecting other parts of the body. This is why it is called a silent disease and you must get cancer pancreas treatment. Here are the top 6 early warning signs of pancreatic cancer that you must know. 1, Jaundice. It is common for people with pancreatic cancer to experience jaundice, characterized by yellowing of the eyes or skin. Jaundice can also cause itchiness on the hands and feet, especially the palms and soles. Any size of tumor located in the head of the pancreas can lead to irregular bile (a yellowish-brown fluid released by your liver to aid digestion) flowing from the gallbladder into the small intestine. This causes excess buildup of bilirubin in the blood, one of the main causes of jaundice. 2, Abdominal and Lower Back Pain. Abdominal as well as back pain are also common symptoms in patients with pancreatic cancer. Usually, the sharp pain is felt in the upper abdomen, which gradually radiates toward the back. Many patients also report the pain is more severe at night and that they get slight relief from the pain by bending forward. If you are experiencing persistent, mild to moderate abdominal pain, consult a doctor or pancreatic cancer clinical trials. Most cases of pancreatic cancer are diagnosed in patients visiting the emergency room complaining of severe abdominal pain. 3, Nausea and Vomiting. Nausea followed by vomiting is another sign of pancreatic cancer. As the tumor grows, it can block some portions of the digestive tract, which hampers the overall digestion process. Along with nausea and vomiting, you may also experience heartburn and acid reflux. If these symptoms tend to worsen after eating and it is becoming difficult for you to eat anything without throwing up, consult your doctor and get best pancreatic cancer treatment. In advanced cases of pancreatic cancer, surgery may be required to bypass the blockage and improve digestion. 4, Unexplained Weight Loss. Unexplained weight loss is another noticeable warning sign of different types of cancer, including pancreatic cancer. Weight loss often occurs when a tumor spreads to nearby organs and impairs their functioning. This affects proper digestion of nutrients and also leads to poor appetite. Also, due to lack of pancreatic enzymes aiding digestion, dietary fats start passing through the body undigested, which in turn causes weight loss. Furthermore, the cancer cells compete with healthy cells for nutrients you must find a pancreatic cancer therapy. 5, Greasy or Light-Colored Stool. Stools of people suffering from pancreatic cancer have some distinct characteristics. The stools may become large, pale, oily, floating and smelly as the growing tumor prevents the pancreas from releasing its digestive enzymes. As the color and consistency of your stool says a lot about your health, any kind of bowel changes should be reported to your doctor. 6, Changes in Urine Color. Along with changes in your stools, you may also notice changes in your urine color, despite drinking enough fluid throughout the day. Your urine may become darker and take on an orange, amber or brown shade. A growing pancreatic tumor can cause bile to get blocked and not released from your body in the way that it should be. Too much bilirubin in the body can get into your urine and make it dark in appearance. At times, there also may be traces of blood in your urine. Pancreatic Cancer: A Beautiful Story of Survival

24:08
When patients diagnosed with cancer are admitted to the hospital, many times we see them at their lowest. From chemotherapy and radiation treatments to surgeries and diagnostic test. It can be an emotional roller coster for not only the patient but also all of their loved ones… including their medical staff… I remember about 2 months ago, I was feeling down. Normally I’m an extremely upbeat person. However, working on the oncology unit was taking it’s tole on me. I realized, that I was mistakingly focusing on some of the patients who didn’t make it. Unfortunately, many of the patients who recover fully do not make their ways back in the the hospital. I can’t blame, the hospital would not be high on my list also. Recently, I attended a fundraising event with my husband and I heard a beautiful dynamic speaker by the name of Camille. Don’t tell anyone, but I actually cried while she was talking… By the time she finished speaking, I knew I had to ask her to share her story on my channel. I waited for 2 hours to talk with her and after the crowds had died down, she graciously accepted my offer. Spending time with Camille was like taking a breath of fresh air. Imagine walking into someones home for an interview and a bubbly 60 year old greets you with tons of energy, gorgeous hair and a wholesome outlook and love for life. This is who Camlile is, just a loving bundle of joy - I left her house inspired and grateful. I hope you feel the same way after listening to her story. Camille was given one of the worst diagnosis… Had I been reading her chart, I unfortunately would have not spent too much time with it… I have never met anyone that survived Pancreatic Cancer, much less; Stage 4 Pancreatic Cancer with metastasis aka METS. The first doctor she went to told her that she that with stage 4 Pancreatic Cancer with spots on in her lungs, liver and kidneys; there was nothing they could do and she was to go home and prepare to die. However, one thing that she strongly recommends is to get a second opinion, which is what she did. She went to University of Miami’s Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer center. She found a doctor that believed in her and she trusted him. She will be the first to tell you that her story is not the norm and oftentimes told me how it hurts her to know that many others have had the same diagnosis and not the same outcome. However, her main focus is to share that no matter how bad things seem, you can always and MUST always have hope. Thankfully Camille is not alone these days. Thanks to advanced research and better treatment options. The bike ride event that Camille and I speak about in the video is a Fundraising event. Events like these help organizations raise money to continue research and be positioned to deliver specialized treatment options. Each persons cancer is different and events like these help us do a small part to help ensure much needed progress. I hope you decide to join us. Please read bike ride information below and email me with any questions: Caroline@EmpoweRN.com See you soon! xoxo ~Caroline Fundraising Bike Ride Information: Please join Camille and I February , 11th 2017 for the fundraising bike ride. If you click on the link below scroll down to a button that says “Join My Team.” After you click on the button, you will be taken to another page that gives you multiple options on different fundraising activities. Camille and I will be doing the 14 mile bike ride. Don’t worry, it is not a race and as long as you have a decent bike you probably do not have to prepare much for it. At least I didn’t lol. The minimum fundraising donation for the bike ride is $250 - however you can reserve your spot for $150 and raise the rest later if you would like. All proceeds will be donated to the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer which is South Florida's leader in cancer diagnosis and provides state-of-the-art treatment as well as follow-up care. They also have an advanced research department, which is vital to discovering better treatment options, which in turn will help us save lives. Here is what I did: I purchased the $150 bike ride fee. Then, I purchased two of the $50 Counting Crows concert tickets. I went last year and it was a lot of fun, so I think it is worth the money anyways. Then, just to start my page I paid an additional $10, this is not necessary though. Since I did this last year I know how much fun it is going to be, so I hope you decide to join Camille and I! https://fundraisers.hakuapp.com/teams/team-hurricanes-hurricane-camille By the way, if you only want to donate… every single dollar helps! No donation is too small. Thank you for watching and thank you Camille for sharing your beautiful energy and message of hope to us all. Happy Holidays, ~Caroline

LIFE Before Death Cancer Pain

03:19
DVD OUT NOW http://www.lifebeforedeath.com "Cancer Pain" Short Film 9 of 50 in the LIFE Before Death documentary series about the global crisis in untreated pain and the dramatic life changing effect palliative care services can deliver to patients and their families around the world. In this Short Film we discover that cancer is the most feared disease and the problem of cancer pain is an escalating problem worldwide. "Studies in a number of countries have shown when you ask people what disease worries them most if they thought they had it, cancer is streets ahead of anything else," reports Professor David Hill (Australia). Over 12 million people are likely to be diagnosed with cancer this year alone and 7 million will die of the disease. Cancer kills more people than AIDS and tuberculosis combined. "There are at least 5 million people who die of cancer each year with untreated pain," states Dr Kathleen Foley (USA). "We think this is an underestimate of pain in the world because there are 12 million survivors of cancer, people living with cancer, and we know about a third of them experience pain." Dr Eva Rossina Duarte Juarez (Guatemala) agrees that cancer is indeed painful. "In the situation of advanced illnesses, people need to be able to die in peace." Breast cancer patient Carmen (Australia) reflects that she doesn't fear death however she did fear the essential medications designed to treat her cancer pain. "I had a lot of pain on every level, whether it was physical or emotional." Dr Mark Boughey (Australia) of Caritas Christi Hospice in Melbourne explains, "When Carmen got here pain was the big issue... She had that really problematic neuropathic pain so you couldn't even touch her skin without her screaming and being distressed." "This problem is very much with us, it's a global problem, but also there are things we can do to bring the escalating problem of cancer under control," Professor David Hill. Carmen reflects that professional treatment of her pain brought back her sanity and quality of life. "I'm very blessed to have had this opportunity ... I've had really good care." Featuring Professor David Hill (Australia), Dr Kathleen Foley (USA), Dr Eva Rossina Duarte Juarez (Guatemala), Dr Mark Boughey (Australia), Carmen (Australia). LIFE Before Death will include 50 short films themed around pain control and end of life issues, releasing one a week for a year from May 2011. A feature film was released in early 2012 and is available at http://www.lifebeforedeath.com The project is presented by the Lien Foundation and produced by Moonshine Movies. It is also supported by the International Association for the Study of Pain, The Mayday Fund, the Union for International Cancer Control and The Institute for Palliative Medicine at San Diego Hospice International Programs. Charlotte Rae shares her experience with pancreatic cancer

03:45
Chalotte Rae, familiar to millions of TV viewers as the housemother on the '80s sitcom The Facts of Life, was diagnosed in 2009 with pancreatic cancer, an often-silent killer with few if any symptoms until it is too late. Some 40,000 new cases of pancreatic cancer are diagnosed each year, and by the time diagnosis is made, up to 80 percent of patients are no longer candidates for treatment. "I had no symptoms," Rae says. "I had absolutely no symptoms. None whatsoever." But Rae was, in a way, lucky. Because she had a family history of the disease - her mother, uncle and older sister all died from the disease - she underwent early screening, which detected the cancer at an early stage. "We're working hard to develop tests for earlier diagnosis," says Howard Reber, M.D., director of the UCLA Pancreatic Cancer Program. The goal is to create something similar to the PSA test now done to detect prostate cancer in its early stages, before it has had a chance to spread. "In patients where we know that there's an increased likelihood of the development of the disease, we can screen them, we can get CT scans, we can get endoscopic ultrasounds," Dr. Reber says. In Rae's case, the cancer was detected and found to be contained, but it was growing fast. Surgery was performed to remove the cancer, and now, following surgery and chemotherapy, Rae is cancer free. New Study Shows IRE Treatment Significantly Improves Remission Rates for Pancreatic Cancer

05:33
Doctor with Survivor Discusses Her Battle Against Advanced Pancreatic Cancer and Amazing Long-Term Remission It’s well known that pancreatic cancer has the highest mortality rate of all cancers, making a diagnosis a virtual death sentence. In fact, it’s estimated that 94% of pancreatic cancer patients die within five years of diagnosis, and 74% of patients die within the first year. Given its deadly nature and the fact that it’s anticipated to move from the #4 leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the US to #2 by 2020, finding additional treatment options for advanced pancreatic cancer is critical. Now a study led by the University of Louisville’s James Graham Brown Cancer Center in collaboration with other leading US centers, called Soft Tissue Ablation Registry or STAR, is showing great promise for people with locally advanced pancreatic cancer. The data provides additional evidence that irreversible electroporation (IRE) ablation has the potential to augment the current treatment model and change the standard of care for patients with locally advanced pancreatic cancer. The NanoKnife® IRE system is a tool that destroys cancerous cells by subjecting them to a series of short electrical pulses using high-voltage direct current that does not injure surrounding cells, blood vessels or other vital structures. Diagnosed at forty-three years old, with two young boys in kindergarten and second grade, Elise Tedeschi, is available to discuss her personal battle with pancreatic cancer. Given just 9 months to live, she is now more than two and a half years in remission and thriving. Joining her is leading oncology surgeon, Dr. Robert Martin. Together they bring both a professional and personal, real-world view to what this new surgical technology could potentially do for those faced with a diagnosis of locally advanced pancreatic cancer. They also want to encourage patients be advocates about their healthcare and explore all options available to them. ABOUT: Robert Martin, M.D., Ph.D.: Dr. Martin has devoted most of his career to cancer treatment and care. He is the Director of the Division of Surgical Oncology, faculty member, and an Associate Professor in the Department of Surgery at the University of Louisville, James Graham Brown Cancer Center in Kentucky. He received his M.D. from the University of Louisville School of Medicine, his surgical oncology training and hepato-pancreatico-biliary training from Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, and his Ph.D. from the Department of Pharmacology and Toxiciology at the University of Louisville School of Medicine. About STAR: The Soft Tissue Ablation Registry (STAR) is a retrospective analysis of Irreversible Electroporation (IRE) performed on 200 locally advanced pancreatic cancer patients at six medical centers in the US. This interview is provided by the University of Louisville The study was conducted at the University of Louisville, Cleveland Clinic, Cancer Treatment Centers of America in Atlanta, the Henry Ford Health Systems in Detroit, Piedmont Hospital in Atlanta and Swedish Medical Center in Denver. Patrick Swayze [August 18, 1952 – September 14, 2009] Documentary 2017

45:22
Patrick Wayne Swayze - August 18, 1952 – September 14, 2009 - was an American actor, dancer, and singer-songwriter. Having gained fame with appearances in films during the 1980s, Swayze became popular for playing tough guys and romantic lead males, gaining him a wide fan base with female audiences, and status as a teen idol and sex symbol. Patrick was born on August 18, 1952, in Houston, Texas, the second child of Patsy Swayze (née Karnes; 1927–2013), a choreographer, dance instructor, and dancer, and Jesse Wayne Swayze (1925–1982), an engineering draftsman. He had two younger brothers, actor Don (born 1958) and Sean Kyle (born 1962), and two sisters, Vickie Lynn (1949–1994) and Bambi. Swayze and his siblings were raised in their mother's Roman Catholic faith. Swayze was married to Lisa Niemi for 34 years beginning on June 12, 1975. The couple met in 1970, when Swayze was 18 years old. Niemi, 14 years old at the time, was taking dance lessons from Swayze's mother. Swayze and Niemi had no children. In a 2008 interview, Swayze stated that Niemi was the inspiration for his hit song, "She's Like the Wind" (1987). In late December 2007, just after filming the pilot episode for The Beast, Swayze began to suffer a burning feeling in his stomach caused by a blockage of his bile ducts. Three weeks later, in mid-January 2008, he was diagnosed with stage IV pancreatic cancer. He traveled to the Stanford University Medical Center for chemotherapy and treatment with the experimental drug, vatalanib, which doctors hoped would cut off the blood supply to the tumor. On March 5, 2008, a Reuters article reported that Swayze "has a very limited amount of disease, and he appears to be responding well to treatment thus far." Swayze's doctor confirmed that the actor was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer but insisted he was not as close to death as reports suggested. Despite repeated tabloid claims that his death was imminent, Swayze continued to actively pursue his career. In early May 2008, it was widely reported in a number of tabloids that Swayze underwent surgery to remove part of his stomach after the cancer spread and rewrote his will, transferring his property to his wife. In a statement made on May 28, Swayze said he continued to respond well to treatment at Stanford University Medical Center. In late May 2008, he was seen at a Los Angeles Lakers basketball game, his first public appearance since his diagnosis. Swayze died, with family at his side, on September 14, 2009, at age 57, twenty months after being diagnosed. Swayze's publicist confirmed to CNN that he had died of pancreatic cancer. His body was cremated, and his ashes scattered over his New Mexico ranch. Patrick Swayze Documentary 2017 RIP PATRICK SWAYZE.

Mayo Clinic Minute: The link between diabetes and pancreatic cancer

01:01
Pancreatic cancer is a leading cause of cancer deaths in the U.S. That's because the disease often lies hidden and doesn't cause symptoms until it's spread. But, for a small number of pancreatic cancer cases, one clue can help doctors find the tumor early, while it's still curable. That clue is an unexpected diagnosis of diabetes. In this Mayo Clinic Minute, reporter Vivien Williams talks to Dr. Michael Wallace about the link between pancreatic cancer and diabetes. Poultry Exposure Tied to Liver and Pancreatic Cancer

(All proceeds Dr. Greger receives from the sales of his books, DVDs, and speaking engagements go to support the 501c3 nonprofit that runs NutritionFacts.org.) DESCRIPTION: Cancer-causing viruses in poultry may explain increased risks of death from liver and pancreatic cancers. I've addressed this topic before. See: • Poultry and Penis Cancer (http://nutritionfacts.org/video/poultry-and-penis-cancer/) • Wart Cancer Viruses in Food (http://nutritionfacts.org/video/wart-cancer-virusesin-food/) • Obesity-Causing Chicken Virus (http://nutritionfacts.org/video/obesity-causing-chicken-virus/) • Carcinogenic Retrovirus Found in Eggs (http://nutritionfacts.org/video/carcinogenic-retrovirus-found-in-eggs/) • Chicken Dioxins, Viruses, or Antibiotics? (http://nutritionfacts.org/video/chicken-dioxins-viruses-or-antibiotics/) • Poultry Exposure and Neurological Disease (http://nutritionfacts.org/video/poultry-exposure-and-neurological-disease/) It's ironic that the meat industry wants to add viruses to meat (Viral Meat Spray, http://nutritionfacts.org/video/viral-meat-spray/) to combat fecal bacterial contamination. I'd take that over their other bright idea any day (Maggot Meat Spray, http://nutritionfacts.org/video/maggot-meat-spray/). A human wart virus, HPV, can be combated with green tea (Treating Genital Warts with Green Tea, http://nutritionfacts.org/video/treating-genital-warts-with-green-tea/) and plant-based diets in general (Why Might Vegetarians Have Less HPV?, http://nutritionfacts.org/video/why-might-vegetarians-have-less-hpv/). Although workers with the most poultry exposure appear to suffer the greatest excess mortality, increased deaths from cancer are also found in other slaughterhouse workers. More on that in the next video Eating Outside Our Kingdom (http://nutritionfacts.org/video/eating-outside-our-kingdom). Have a question for Dr. Greger about this video? Leave it in the comment section at http://nutritionfacts.org/video/poultry-exposure-tied-to-liver-and-pancreatic-cancer/ and he'll try to answer it! http://www.NutritionFacts.org • Subscribe: http://www.NutritionFacts.org/subscribe • Donate: http://www.NutritionFacts.org/donate • HOW NOT TO DIE: http://nutritionfacts.org/book • Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/NutritionFacts.org • Twitter: http://www.twitter.com/nutrition_facts • Instagram: http://instagram.com/nutrition_facts_org/ • Google+: https://plus.google.com/+NutritionfactsOrgMD • Podcast: http://nutritionfacts.org/audio/

Patrick Swayze R.I.P 1952-2009 (Died of Cancer)

03:35
August 18, 1952- September 14, 2009. Rest in Peace Patrick. We will all miss you. In 1991 he was known as the sexiest man alive. Swayze was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in late January 2008, and underwent chemotherapy and other treatments at the Stanford University Medical Center. On March 5, 2008, a Reuters article reported that Swayze "has a very limited amount of disease, and he appears to be responding well to treatment thus far". Swayze's doctor confirmed that the actor was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, but insisted he was not as close to death as reports suggest. Specifically, Swayze was diagnosed with a type of pancreatic tumor called Intraductal Papillary Mucinous Neoplasm (IPMN). Swayze acknowledged that his chain smoking probably "had something to do with" the development of his disease. Research has shown a link between cigarette smoking and the development of cancer of the pancreas. Swayze died on September 14, 2009, at age 57. Pancreatic Cancer Blood Test

02:03
Did you know that more than one person a day dies from pancreatic cancer in Oklahoma? It is the fourth leading cause of cancer death in the United States - so often deadly because it is seldom caught early. Currently, the five-year survival rate for patients with pancreatic cancer is only 4 percent. Experts at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center say that is because it is seldom diagnosed until it is in it's advanced stages. Now researchers at OU hope they may soon change that. Their work may bring a new blood test for pancreatic cancer in the not too distant future. This is research that brings hope of turning around the deadly statistics surrounding this often silent killer. This same research could lead to ways to identify other cancers at their earliest stages too.

10 Early Warning Signs of Pancreatic Cancer Don't Ignore These

08:03
10 Early Warning Signs of Pancreatic Cancer Like, Comment, Subscribe and invite all your friends to see our videos. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCfR3Y90G-fFDYI6i7E7xPBQ 1. Diabetes, especially if it comes on suddenly. 2. Yellowing of the eyes or skin. Even a small pancreatic tumor can block the bile duct in the head of the pancreas, causing bile to build up. This causes jaundice. 3. Itchy skin, palms, and soles of feet. A little-known side-effect of jaundice is itchy hands and feet. It's due to a skin reaction to the bilirubin, the yellowish brown liver chemical that causes jaundice. 4. Lack of appetite. An Italian study found that six to eight months before being diagnosed with pancreatic tumors, patients reported a sudden drop in their appetite and a tendency to feel full after eating very little. 5. Changes in taste. In the same Italian study, some of the patients surveyed said they'd suddenly lost their taste for coffee, wine, and smoking. In fact, they said, they felt "disgust" for the smell and taste of coffee and alcohol. 6. Abdominal pain. Pancreatic cancer sufferers remember this pain as a gnawing pain, rather than a sharp cramp or ache, and it radiates toward the back. A characteristic clue: the pain goes away when you lean forward. 7. 8. 9. Dark, tarry stools. Bleeding in the upper intestines causes this symptom. 10. Sudden, unexplained weight loss. Weight loss is not always, as many people mistakenly believe, a sign of advanced cancer that's spread to the liver. It can also happen because a lack of pancreatic enzymes is causing fat to pass through the body undigested. What do you do if you're worried about any of these symptoms? Document all symptoms, and report them to your doctor in as much detail as possible. If your doctor is convinced you have legitimate concerns (and remember, you may have to do some convincing), tests such as an ultrasound, a CT scan, and an endoscopy followed by a biopsy can be used to search for a pancreatic tumor. A blood test is now available for a biomarker called CA 19-9 that is released by pancreatic cancer cells. Unfortunately, by the time CA 19-9 reaches detectable levels, the cancer is usually no longer in the early stage, although the test is useful during treatment and for detecting recurrence. Another biomarker test, CEA (carcinoembryonic antigen), is also not sensitive enough to provide early diagnosis. While tragic early deaths like Steve Jobs' are the hard reality of pancreatic cancer, there are also people living productive lives thanks to an early diagnosis of pancreatic cancer. Such was the case with Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, who's still practicing after having a tiny pancreatic tumor surgically removed. Yes, she got "lucky," as she put it -- but she also got a CT scan, which is how the tumor was found. {The information provided on this channel and its videos is for general purposes only and should not be considered as professional advice. Pancreatic Cancer Survior

01:38
It is a kind of cancer that is on the rise. Within five-to-ten years, doctors believe pancreatic cancer will become the second deadliest behind lung cancer. As Fox 17 News anchor Nick Paranjape reports, one reason is because it's difficult to diagnose."I didn't expect to survive," said Mary Maddox. But she did, seven years after being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer."Pancreatic cancer is the only major cancer with the survival rate under ten percent," said Dr. Berlin. That's exactly why Dr. Jordan Berlin, an Oncologist at Vanderbilt Ingram cancer center, calls Mary a miracle. The pancreas is an organ, shaped like a fish that creates enzymes for digestion and hormones like insulin. It's tucked way behind many organs and sandwiched between the spine and stomach. A tumor can be hard to find."Pancreatic cancers are very hard to see on all of our scans cat scans, MIR's, pet scans," added Dr. Berlin.Dr. Berlin says pancreatic cancer symptoms are not specific either. "The one thing that becomes specific is a lot patients can develop jaundice," said Dr. Berlin"I turned yellow first," exclaimed Maddox. And that is what saved Mary's life. Developing jaundice and then having the surgical procedure called "the whipple effect" where the head of the pancreas is removed, but the body and tail is kept. It is a complicated and risky procedure, but it worked for Mary whose mother died of pancreatic cancer."It was a miracle mine was diagnosed early," said Maddox.Dr. Berlin says more and more people are being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer because everyone is living longer."Pancreatic cancer increases as you age, so you have an increased risk as you get older," said Dr. Berlin. That is why Mary is proudly wearing her purple and to get the word out."Pancreatic cancer doesn't get research doesn't get all the funding the other cancers do it's not as a well-known although it is rising in the ranks," said Maddox. Many risk factors can lead to pancreatic cancer like smoking, obesity, and diets heavy in fats and rich in sugars. In fact, a recent study says eating a piece of sausage or having two strips of bacon "every day" can increase your chances of getting pancreatic cancer by 19-percent.

Sisters Share Their Dad's Story for Pancreatic

02:09
CINCINNATI (WKRC) -- November is Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month and two sisters in Fort Thomas have an important message about how to keep fighting against this disease. Medical reporter Liz Bonis shares their story in today's Medical Edge. When you sit and watch the video with Sydney and Hannah Groneck, it's hard to not to see and feel the love they share for their dad, Rick. Three months ago he died of pancreatic cancer. He survived more than two years however following diagnosis,"initially you here those words, and you are so scared, and pancreatic cancer, everyone thinks it's a death sentence but that's not how it was with my dad, it was kind of just another chance to live even more, I guess." The girls say he taught them to keep fighting. The slogan stuck "we turned it into our family saying." Now the girls are sharing their dad's story to honor the memory those in their family lost to this disease, "his two brothers and his sister in law." More than a thousand people attended their dads layout and funeral, "just to see that many people how he's touched their lives, it makes me feel like I need to do the same thing, not about his story, but about pancreatic cancer in general." Part of the reason they are sharing their story however is that this is a cancer that doesn't get a whole lot of attention we don't really know what causes it and we need more research for it , so we stopped out to talk to specialists, to find out just what kind of a difference it would make, as more of us know more about this cancer. "It's hard to know, there's so many things we eat and drink and breathe, cigarette smoking has been associated with pancreas cancer, but there's a lot of research going on trying to find out more specifically what causes are. " Doctor Bill Barrett of the Barrett Cancer Center says "the problem is with pancreas cancer is that typically there aren't any symptoms until the disease has spread beyond the pancreas and it's incurable, so there's a ton of research going on right now, trying to find earlier ways to diagnose and treat the disease." In the meantime for Sydney and Hannah, here's what they want you to know "it's good to talk about it because, everybody hears about breast cancer, but pancreatic cancer doesn't come up until you know someone who's diagnosed with it. I don't want people to feel like cancer is a death sentence, I want them to feel like it's a chance to fight, just like he did." They say they'll keep fighting and celebrating, not how their dad died, but how he lived.
