Pancreatic Cancer Diary, Part 11

08:00
My cousin, Dario Darias, was a husband, father, brother, U.S. Navy Corpsman (assigned to Marine Corps), U.S. Army Medic, volunteer firefighter, Coast Guard Auxiliary member, a Mason and he loved to ride his 2009 Yamaha XV1. On July 3, 2015 he was diagnosed with stage IV pancreatic cancer. The next day he asked me to record this video diary. I thought this was going to be a long-term project focusing on a 49-year-old man fighting a disease. I was wrong.

Early Warning Signs of Pancreatic Cancer

06:08
Early Warning Signs of Pancreatic Cancer Diabetes, especially if it comes on suddenly. Recently, the Mayo Clinic published startling research showing that 40 percent of pancreatic cancer patients had been diagnosed with diabetes one to two years before discovering they had a pancreatic tumor. Researchers believe the diabetes is caused by tumors that simply haven't been detected yet. The problem is, diabetes is very common, and the majority of diabetes isn't pancreatic cancer, so doctors are trying to develop screening tools to tell the difference. Right now, they say family history is an important clue. If you're diagnosed with diabetes that seems to come on suddenly and you have no family history of diabetes, bring this to your doctor's attention and ask for further screening for pancreatic cancer. Yellowing of the eyes or skin. Even a small pancreatic tumor can block the bile duct in the head of the pancreas, causing bile to build up. This causes jaundice. Itchy skin, palms, and soles of feet. A little-known side-effect of jaundice is itchy hands and feet. It's due to a skin reaction to the bilirubin, the yellowish brown liver chemical that causes jaundice. Lack of appetite. An Italian study found that six to eight months before being diagnosed with pancreatic tumors, patients reported a sudden drop in their appetite and a tendency to feel full after eating very little. Changes in taste. In the same Italian study, some of the patients surveyed said they'd suddenly lost their taste for coffee, wine, and smoking. In fact, they said, they felt "disgust" for the smell and taste of coffee and alcohol. Abdominal pain. Pancreatic cancer sufferers remember this pain as a gnawing pain, rather than a sharp cramp or ache, and it radiates toward the back. A characteristic clue: the pain goes away when you lean forward. An enlarged gall bladder. The same blockage of the bile duct that causes jaundice can also cause an enlarged gallbladder, as the bile builds up behind the duct. The good news is that an enlarged gallbladder can be seen on imaging tests, and it may even be possible for a doctor to feel it during a physical exam. Pale, floating, smelly stools. If a pancreatic tumor prevents digestive enzymes from reaching the intestine, the result is an inability to digest fatty foods. So you end up with loose, smelly "floaters" as a result of the excess fat. Doctors say this symptom, in particular, can be an early clue and is too often overlooked. Dark, tarry stools. Bleeding in the upper intestines causes this symptom. Sudden, unexplained weight loss. Weight loss is not always, as many people mistakenly believe, a sign of advanced cancer that's spread to the liver. It can also happen because a lack of pancreatic enzymes is causing fat to pass through the body undigested. New videos everyday! Pancreatic Cancer -- My Father Died 3 Months after Diagnosis

02:38
Teri shares her family's story about her father's diagnosis with pancreatic cancer and his death in less than three months after diagnosis. Her father had always lived a healthy life, ate a good diet and was physically active. Teri noticed he looked ill and took him to UCLA where he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. She helped him search for options but learned he was past the point of surgery. Chemotherapy had no good outcome, in fact his tumors doubled. Shortly after, Teri's father died. She met Agi Hirshberg, founder of the Hirshberg Foundation, who talked with Teri about her experiences. Teri dove into work with the Foundation; it actually became her therapy as she says. She helped the Hirshberg Foundation plan events to raise funds for pancreatic cancer research and started a charity in her father's name to support further investigation and help spread awareness about this disease. Teri states, "My passion is that no one should go through what my dad did. He was gone in under three months; this should not happen to anyone. I had no knowledge of pancreatic cancer, but learned more than I need to know. In the last eleven years we've come a long way, but we are nowhere near where we need to be. I'll continue to fight till we find that cure."

6 Warning Signs and Symptoms of Pancreatic Cancer, No 5 is Shocking

05:38
Descriptions of Warning symptoms of Pancreatic Cancer: 6 Warning Signs and Symptoms of Pancreatic Cancer, No 5 is Shocking It accounts for about 3 percent of all cancers in the United States, but 7 percent of cancer deaths. Pancreatic cancer begins in the tissues of your pancreas, a pear-shaped organn located behind the lower part of your stomach Pancreatic cancer is difficult to detect early and it typically spreads rapidly, affecting other parts of the body. This is why it is called a silent disease and you must get cancer pancreas treatment. Here are the top 6 early warning signs of pancreatic cancer that you must know. 1, Jaundice. It is common for people with pancreatic cancer to experience jaundice, characterized by yellowing of the eyes or skin. Jaundice can also cause itchiness on the hands and feet, especially the palms and soles. Any size of tumor located in the head of the pancreas can lead to irregular bile (a yellowish-brown fluid released by your liver to aid digestion) flowing from the gallbladder into the small intestine. This causes excess buildup of bilirubin in the blood, one of the main causes of jaundice. 2, Abdominal and Lower Back Pain. Abdominal as well as back pain are also common symptoms in patients with pancreatic cancer. Usually, the sharp pain is felt in the upper abdomen, which gradually radiates toward the back. Many patients also report the pain is more severe at night and that they get slight relief from the pain by bending forward. If you are experiencing persistent, mild to moderate abdominal pain, consult a doctor or pancreatic cancer clinical trials. Most cases of pancreatic cancer are diagnosed in patients visiting the emergency room complaining of severe abdominal pain. 3, Nausea and Vomiting. Nausea followed by vomiting is another sign of pancreatic cancer. As the tumor grows, it can block some portions of the digestive tract, which hampers the overall digestion process. Along with nausea and vomiting, you may also experience heartburn and acid reflux. If these symptoms tend to worsen after eating and it is becoming difficult for you to eat anything without throwing up, consult your doctor and get best pancreatic cancer treatment. In advanced cases of pancreatic cancer, surgery may be required to bypass the blockage and improve digestion. 4, Unexplained Weight Loss. Unexplained weight loss is another noticeable warning sign of different types of cancer, including pancreatic cancer. Weight loss often occurs when a tumor spreads to nearby organns and impairs their functioning. This affects proper digestion of nutrients and also leads to poor appetite. Also, due to lack of pancreatic enzymes aiding digestion, dietary fats start passing through the body undigested, which in turn causes weight loss. Furthermore, the cancer cells compete with healthy cells for nutrients you must find a pancreatic cancer therapy. 5, Greasy or Light-Colored Stool. Stools of people suffering from pancreatic cancer have some distinct characteristics. The stools may become large, pale, oily, floating and smelly as the growing tumor prevents the pancreas from releasing its digestive enzymes. As the color and consistency of your stool says a lot about your health, any kind of bowell changes should be reported to your doctor. 6, Changes in urinee Color. Along with changes in your stools, you may also notice changes in your urinee color, despite drinking enough fluid throughout the day. Your urinee may become darker and take on an orange, amber or brown shade. A growing pancreatic tumor can cause bile to get blocked and not released from your body in the way that it should be. Too much bilirubin in the body can get into your urinee and make it dark in appearance. At times, there also may be traces of blood in your urinee. When Death is near

05:49
Every death is individual, just as we are all different in life. There are a few common changes that happen. Knowing what these changes are and how to manage them may be helpful. It is usual and normal for people to experience these changes when death is near: More tiredness and sleeping more Eating and drinking less Less passing urine and faeces Being more drowsy and less alert There is no need to be worried or concerned about these changes as they are part of the usual process of preparing for death. Eating and drinking – If the person who is dying does not ask for food or drink or declines them there is no need to worry or try to force them to eat or drink Mouth care – The person who is dying might not feel thirsty but their mouth can become dry and this can feel uncomfortable. You can help keep their mouth moist by giving them ice chips to suck or using a moistened swab [demonstrate use of swab] Breathing – Sometimes people can have very noisy breathing; this breathing can sound very alarming but the person who is dying is not usually distressed by it. There is medication that can reduce this sound. Pain and agitation – There is medication that can reduce these symptoms Confusion – The person who is dying may be a bit confused. There is medication that can assist with this. You can also assist by telling them where they are and that they are being looked after. Confusion may be lessened by playing music that the person likes and having family members (familiar faces) around (especially if the person is in an unfamiliar environment such as the hospital). Changing position – An air bed or a hospital bed and air mattress can be provided to help the person who is dying to feel comfortable in bed and to help you help them to change position every few hours. A person can be close to death but not yet passed away for days or sometimes weeks. Sometimes a person can move close to death but then recover again; they may move in and out of this stage. Even if a person wants to die at home, sometimes the final stages can be too much; it can be overwhelming. It is okay to call for help and ask for the person to be admitted to the local hospital. There are palliative care rooms available at Ararat, Maryborough, Willaura, Stawell, St Arnaud, and Beaufort. These rooms provide some privacy and opportunity for you to be with the dying person and nursing staff are available to assist you in caring. There may be the opportunity for a carer to sleep overnight at the hospital with the person who is dying – if this is what you would like to do, ask the staff about this option. New Study Shows IRE Treatment Significantly Improves Remission Rates for Pancreatic Cancer

05:33
Doctor with Survivor Discusses Her Battle Against Advanced Pancreatic Cancer and Amazing Long-Term Remission It’s well known that pancreatic cancer has the highest mortality rate of all cancers, making a diagnosis a virtual death sentence. In fact, it’s estimated that 94% of pancreatic cancer patients die within five years of diagnosis, and 74% of patients die within the first year. Given its deadly nature and the fact that it’s anticipated to move from the #4 leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the US to #2 by 2020, finding additional treatment options for advanced pancreatic cancer is critical. Now a study led by the University of Louisville’s James Graham Brown Cancer Center in collaboration with other leading US centers, called Soft Tissue Ablation Registry or STAR, is showing great promise for people with locally advanced pancreatic cancer. The data provides additional evidence that irreversible electroporation (IRE) ablation has the potential to augment the current treatment model and change the standard of care for patients with locally advanced pancreatic cancer. The NanoKnife® IRE system is a tool that destroys cancerous cells by subjecting them to a series of short electrical pulses using high-voltage direct current that does not injure surrounding cells, blood vessels or other vital structures. Diagnosed at forty-three years old, with two young boys in kindergarten and second grade, Elise Tedeschi, is available to discuss her personal battle with pancreatic cancer. Given just 9 months to live, she is now more than two and a half years in remission and thriving. Joining her is leading oncology surgeon, Dr. Robert Martin. Together they bring both a professional and personal, real-world view to what this new surgical technology could potentially do for those faced with a diagnosis of locally advanced pancreatic cancer. They also want to encourage patients be advocates about their healthcare and explore all options available to them. ABOUT: Robert Martin, M.D., Ph.D.: Dr. Martin has devoted most of his career to cancer treatment and care. He is the Director of the Division of Surgical Oncology, faculty member, and an Associate Professor in the Department of Surgery at the University of Louisville, James Graham Brown Cancer Center in Kentucky. He received his M.D. from the University of Louisville School of Medicine, his surgical oncology training and hepato-pancreatico-biliary training from Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, and his Ph.D. from the Department of Pharmacology and Toxiciology at the University of Louisville School of Medicine. About STAR: The Soft Tissue Ablation Registry (STAR) is a retrospective analysis of Irreversible Electroporation (IRE) performed on 200 locally advanced pancreatic cancer patients at six medical centers in the US. This interview is provided by the University of Louisville The study was conducted at the University of Louisville, Cleveland Clinic, Cancer Treatment Centers of America in Atlanta, the Henry Ford Health Systems in Detroit, Piedmont Hospital in Atlanta and Swedish Medical Center in Denver. Charlotte Rae shares her experience with pancreatic cancer

03:45
Chalotte Rae, familiar to millions of TV viewers as the housemother on the '80s sitcom The Facts of Life, was diagnosed in 2009 with pancreatic cancer, an often-silent killer with few if any symptoms until it is too late. Some 40,000 new cases of pancreatic cancer are diagnosed each year, and by the time diagnosis is made, up to 80 percent of patients are no longer candidates for treatment. "I had no symptoms," Rae says. "I had absolutely no symptoms. None whatsoever." But Rae was, in a way, lucky. Because she had a family history of the disease - her mother, uncle and older sister all died from the disease - she underwent early screening, which detected the cancer at an early stage. "We're working hard to develop tests for earlier diagnosis," says Howard Reber, M.D., director of the UCLA Pancreatic Cancer Program. The goal is to create something similar to the PSA test now done to detect prostate cancer in its early stages, before it has had a chance to spread. "In patients where we know that there's an increased likelihood of the development of the disease, we can screen them, we can get CT scans, we can get endoscopic ultrasounds," Dr. Reber says. In Rae's case, the cancer was detected and found to be contained, but it was growing fast. Surgery was performed to remove the cancer, and now, following surgery and chemotherapy, Rae is cancer free. Pancreatic Cancer: A Beautiful Story of Survival

24:08
When patients diagnosed with cancer are admitted to the hospital, many times we see them at their lowest. From chemotherapy and radiation treatments to surgeries and diagnostic test. It can be an emotional roller coster for not only the patient but also all of their loved ones… including their medical staff… I remember about 2 months ago, I was feeling down. Normally I’m an extremely upbeat person. However, working on the oncology unit was taking it’s tole on me. I realized, that I was mistakingly focusing on some of the patients who didn’t make it. Unfortunately, many of the patients who recover fully do not make their ways back in the the hospital. I can’t blame, the hospital would not be high on my list also. Recently, I attended a fundraising event with my husband and I heard a beautiful dynamic speaker by the name of Camille. Don’t tell anyone, but I actually cried while she was talking… By the time she finished speaking, I knew I had to ask her to share her story on my channel. I waited for 2 hours to talk with her and after the crowds had died down, she graciously accepted my offer. Spending time with Camille was like taking a breath of fresh air. Imagine walking into someones home for an interview and a bubbly 60 year old greets you with tons of energy, gorgeous hair and a wholesome outlook and love for life. This is who Camlile is, just a loving bundle of joy - I left her house inspired and grateful. I hope you feel the same way after listening to her story. Camille was given one of the worst diagnosis… Had I been reading her chart, I unfortunately would have not spent too much time with it… I have never met anyone that survived Pancreatic Cancer, much less; Stage 4 Pancreatic Cancer with metastasis aka METS. The first doctor she went to told her that she that with stage 4 Pancreatic Cancer with spots on in her lungs, liver and kidneys; there was nothing they could do and she was to go home and prepare to die. However, one thing that she strongly recommends is to get a second opinion, which is what she did. She went to University of Miami’s Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer center. She found a doctor that believed in her and she trusted him. She will be the first to tell you that her story is not the norm and oftentimes told me how it hurts her to know that many others have had the same diagnosis and not the same outcome. However, her main focus is to share that no matter how bad things seem, you can always and MUST always have hope. Thankfully Camille is not alone these days. Thanks to advanced research and better treatment options. The bike ride event that Camille and I speak about in the video is a Fundraising event. Events like these help organizations raise money to continue research and be positioned to deliver specialized treatment options. Each persons cancer is different and events like these help us do a small part to help ensure much needed progress. I hope you decide to join us. Please read bike ride information below and email me with any questions: Caroline@EmpoweRN.com See you soon! xoxo ~Caroline Fundraising Bike Ride Information: Please join Camille and I February , 11th 2017 for the fundraising bike ride. If you click on the link below scroll down to a button that says “Join My Team.” After you click on the button, you will be taken to another page that gives you multiple options on different fundraising activities. Camille and I will be doing the 14 mile bike ride. Don’t worry, it is not a race and as long as you have a decent bike you probably do not have to prepare much for it. At least I didn’t lol. The minimum fundraising donation for the bike ride is $250 - however you can reserve your spot for $150 and raise the rest later if you would like. All proceeds will be donated to the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer which is South Florida's leader in cancer diagnosis and provides state-of-the-art treatment as well as follow-up care. They also have an advanced research department, which is vital to discovering better treatment options, which in turn will help us save lives. Here is what I did: I purchased the $150 bike ride fee. Then, I purchased two of the $50 Counting Crows concert tickets. I went last year and it was a lot of fun, so I think it is worth the money anyways. Then, just to start my page I paid an additional $10, this is not necessary though. Since I did this last year I know how much fun it is going to be, so I hope you decide to join Camille and I! https://fundraisers.hakuapp.com/teams/team-hurricanes-hurricane-camille By the way, if you only want to donate… every single dollar helps! No donation is too small. Thank you for watching and thank you Camille for sharing your beautiful energy and message of hope to us all. Happy Holidays, ~Caroline

Rare Pancreatic Cancer Caused Steve Jobs' Death

02:57
Apple co-founder Steve Jobs' death at the age of 56 followed a seven-year battle with a rare form of pancreatic cancer - the fourth leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the United States. The disease is hard to treat because it is difficult to diagnose. The pancreas is embedded deep in the abdomen, and often, symptoms of cancer become evident at a very late, advanced stage of the disease. Reporter Vidushi Sinha spoke with medical experts about what Job's struggle with pancreatic cancer reveals about the challenges posed by this killer disease

Pancreatic Cancer Survior

01:38
It is a kind of cancer that is on the rise. Within five-to-ten years, doctors believe pancreatic cancer will become the second deadliest behind lung cancer. As Fox 17 News anchor Nick Paranjape reports, one reason is because it's difficult to diagnose."I didn't expect to survive," said Mary Maddox. But she did, seven years after being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer."Pancreatic cancer is the only major cancer with the survival rate under ten percent," said Dr. Berlin. That's exactly why Dr. Jordan Berlin, an Oncologist at Vanderbilt Ingram cancer center, calls Mary a miracle. The pancreas is an organ, shaped like a fish that creates enzymes for digestion and hormones like insulin. It's tucked way behind many organs and sandwiched between the spine and stomach. A tumor can be hard to find."Pancreatic cancers are very hard to see on all of our scans cat scans, MIR's, pet scans," added Dr. Berlin.Dr. Berlin says pancreatic cancer symptoms are not specific either. "The one thing that becomes specific is a lot patients can develop jaundice," said Dr. Berlin"I turned yellow first," exclaimed Maddox. And that is what saved Mary's life. Developing jaundice and then having the surgical procedure called "the whipple effect" where the head of the pancreas is removed, but the body and tail is kept. It is a complicated and risky procedure, but it worked for Mary whose mother died of pancreatic cancer."It was a miracle mine was diagnosed early," said Maddox.Dr. Berlin says more and more people are being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer because everyone is living longer."Pancreatic cancer increases as you age, so you have an increased risk as you get older," said Dr. Berlin. That is why Mary is proudly wearing her purple and to get the word out."Pancreatic cancer doesn't get research doesn't get all the funding the other cancers do it's not as a well-known although it is rising in the ranks," said Maddox. Many risk factors can lead to pancreatic cancer like smoking, obesity, and diets heavy in fats and rich in sugars. In fact, a recent study says eating a piece of sausage or having two strips of bacon "every day" can increase your chances of getting pancreatic cancer by 19-percent.

PANCREATIC CANCER - What are the symptoms of pancreatic cancer

Know Pancreatic Cancer Sign and Symptoms See full content: http://bit.ly/1nSERRN Visual Guide to Understanding Symptoms Pancreatic Cancer | Pancreas Cancer: Sign, Stages, Prognosis, Causes, and Treatments What is the pancreas? Where is it? What does it do? What is pancreatic cancer? Symptoms of pancreatic cancer? What happens now? What tests will I have? Who will treat me? What research is being done? Where do I go for support? Cancer Pancreas Pancreatic cancer has gained attention from the diagnoses of several prominent figures, including Apple co-founder Steve Jobs, who was diagnosed in 2003 and died Oct. 5, 2011. Jobs had an islet cell neuroendocrine tumor, a rare form of the disease. U.S. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg and actor Patrick Swayze have also faced pancreatic cancer. Swayze died in 2009. The lifetime risk of pancreatic cancer is about 1 in 78. What is the Pancreas? The pancreas is a 6-inch-long spongy, tube-shaped organ located in the back of the abdomen, behind the stomach. Pancreatic cancer occurs when malignant (cancerous) cells grow, divide, and spread in the tissues of the pancreas. Symptoms of Pancreatic Cancer The pain may become worse after the person eats or lies down. Other symptoms may include jaundice, nausea, loss of appetite, weight loss, fatigue, weakness, and depression. Causes of Pancreatic Cancer smoking is the main risk factor. Other risks include chronic pancreatitis and cirrhosis of the liver. And family history of pancreatic cancer, high fat diet, obesity, and lack of exercise may also play a part. Diagnosing Pancreatic Cancer To help make the diagnosis (and determine the most appropriate treatment), imaging tests are performed (such as an ultrasound or CT scan) to view pictures of the abdomen and determine the extent of the problem. Treatment: Surgery Treatment: Radiation Therapy Treatment: Chemotherapy Treatment: Palliative Therapy New Anticancer Treatment: Immunotherapy Getting Support Is Prevention Possible? If you smoke, quit now. If your diet is high in fat, work to eat more healthfully. Adopt a regular exercise routine, since exercise can help prevent diabetes and obesity -- two risk factors for the disease. What are the symptoms? How do you know if you have pancreatic cancer? Should you be screened? Over the next several minutes, I will give an overview of pancreatic cancer. Pancreatic cancer is the fourth leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the United States. The pancreas is the organ that sits in the central upper abdomen, is located right behind the stomach organ. The pancreas is about six to eight inches long and about two inches wide, and it extends from the head of the pancreas, which is on the right side of the abdomen, connected to the small intestine, near the gallbladder and the liver, and the pancreas extends to the tail of the pancreas, which is more on the left side of the abdomen. The pancreas is the organ that's responsible for producing certain hormones such as insulin, which regulates your blood sugar. The pancreas also produces certain digestive enzymes or digestive juices, which help us to digest fat. There are two types of pancreatic cancer. One, which comes from the endocrine glands or the hormone-producing cells such as an insulinoma. The other type of pancreatic cancer comes from the exocrine glands or from the pancreatic ducts, and this exocrine gland pancreatic cancer is the most common type of pancreatic cancer. What are the symptoms of pancreatic cancer? One is weight loss. Patients with pancreatic cancer often have early satiety, meaning they get full quickly off of just small amounts of food, or they may just lose their appetites altogether. Another symptom, abdominal pain. Patients often have a dull, aching abdominal pain in the central upper abdomen, and it often radiates to the back. Another symptom, jaundice. Jaundice occurs when the patient's skin turns yellow or the whites of the eyes turn yellow, and this is due to a blockage of the flow of bile by the pancreatic cancer. Patients who have jaundice, this yellow skin, will often also have a change in their stools. How can you be diagnosed with pancreatic cancer? If you have any of the symptoms I described, it is important that you consult your physician as soon as possible. Your physician will do a complete history and physical, and they will likely do some imaging studies such as an ultrasound of the pancreas or a CT, computed tomography, of the pancreas or a test called an ERCP, endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography. If they are suspicious or if they see a mass that looks like pancreatic cancer, then they may do a biopsy, which is when they have a physician to take a small sample of the mass, and a pathologist is another type of physician who will look at that and determine if it is or if it isn't pancreatic cancer. The treatment for pancreatic cancer. The treatment really depends on the staging. If the cancer is caught early, there's a chance that you can have surgery or surgical removal of the cancer. and patients often will have an adjuvant therapy, which means they will receive chemotherapy and/or radiation, especially if the pancreatic cancer has spread. In cases of stage four or metastatic pancreatic cancer, a lot of those patients will also receive chemotherapy. However, that chemotherapy is usually just to shrink the tumor or to help to decrease the symptoms of the tumor. Stage four pancreatic cancer is usually not curable. So what are the risk factors for pancreatic cancer? Well, five to 10 percent of patients who have pancreatic cancer also have family members with pancreatic cancer. So, we do believe that there is some hereditary component. Other things that have been associated with pancreatic cancer include cigarette smoking, obesity, physical inactivity, the Helicobacter pylori infection. But quite honestly, we really don't always know the cause of pancreatic cancer. This ends my overview of pancreatic cancer symptoms, signs, and risk factors. I want you to take care of yourselves, and if you have any of the symptoms that I described, please consult your physician immediately. Those symptoms are weight loss, abdominal pain, jaundice. Also, make sure that you prioritize yourself. Take care of you. As always, strive to live your healthiest, happiest life.

LIFE Before Death Cancer Pain

03:19
DVD OUT NOW http://www.lifebeforedeath.com "Cancer Pain" Short Film 9 of 50 in the LIFE Before Death documentary series about the global crisis in untreated pain and the dramatic life changing effect palliative care services can deliver to patients and their families around the world. In this Short Film we discover that cancer is the most feared disease and the problem of cancer pain is an escalating problem worldwide. "Studies in a number of countries have shown when you ask people what disease worries them most if they thought they had it, cancer is streets ahead of anything else," reports Professor David Hill (Australia). Over 12 million people are likely to be diagnosed with cancer this year alone and 7 million will die of the disease. Cancer kills more people than AIDS and tuberculosis combined. "There are at least 5 million people who die of cancer each year with untreated pain," states Dr Kathleen Foley (USA). "We think this is an underestimate of pain in the world because there are 12 million survivors of cancer, people living with cancer, and we know about a third of them experience pain." Dr Eva Rossina Duarte Juarez (Guatemala) agrees that cancer is indeed painful. "In the situation of advanced illnesses, people need to be able to die in peace." Breast cancer patient Carmen (Australia) reflects that she doesn't fear death however she did fear the essential medications designed to treat her cancer pain. "I had a lot of pain on every level, whether it was physical or emotional." Dr Mark Boughey (Australia) of Caritas Christi Hospice in Melbourne explains, "When Carmen got here pain was the big issue... She had that really problematic neuropathic pain so you couldn't even touch her skin without her screaming and being distressed." "This problem is very much with us, it's a global problem, but also there are things we can do to bring the escalating problem of cancer under control," Professor David Hill. Carmen reflects that professional treatment of her pain brought back her sanity and quality of life. "I'm very blessed to have had this opportunity ... I've had really good care." Featuring Professor David Hill (Australia), Dr Kathleen Foley (USA), Dr Eva Rossina Duarte Juarez (Guatemala), Dr Mark Boughey (Australia), Carmen (Australia). LIFE Before Death will include 50 short films themed around pain control and end of life issues, releasing one a week for a year from May 2011. A feature film was released in early 2012 and is available at http://www.lifebeforedeath.com The project is presented by the Lien Foundation and produced by Moonshine Movies. It is also supported by the International Association for the Study of Pain, The Mayday Fund, the Union for International Cancer Control and The Institute for Palliative Medicine at San Diego Hospice International Programs. Pancreatic Cancer Treatment

01:44
While health experts say pancreatic cancer is uncommon, there are 52,000 new cases diagnosed each year. It’s the third most common cause of cancer related deaths. But how it’s caused is a question medical experts are still trying to answer. Dr. Mark Bloomston, a surgical oncologist on staff at Lee Memorial Health System, says pancreatic cancer is difficult to diagnose. “If we could figure out what’s causing pancreatic cancer then maybe we could make some moves to prevent it. “ He says there are certain risk factors that have been identified like family history, smoking, obesity, diabetes, and an unhealthy lifestyle. “It doesn’t seem to select a race, age, or gender, which is kind of the difficult thing about it because you can’t pick out a population that’s at the highest risk.” Some patients will experience symptoms like weight loss, jaundice, chronic inflammation of the pancreas, and abdominal pain. “Unfortunately, about 90 percent of them, by the time they’ve realized they have the cancer it has already spread and surgery is not an option,” said Dr. Bloomston. But he says if it’s caught in time, the only treatment is surgery to remove the pancreas. “You can actually live without your pancreas. So you can remove the entirety of the pancreas, we prefer not to because it does instantly cause diabetes.” For those at a higher risk, health experts recommend screening using an endoscopic ultrasound. If the tumor is found in time chemo therapy can be used instead of surgery. “Wer’re finally seeing in the last few years chemo therapy that’s starting to work, not to cure it, not to get rid of it, but we are seeing tumors start to shrink, stabilize and become removable.” Giving patients a better chance. Patrick Swayze [August 18, 1952 – September 14, 2009] Documentary 2017

45:22
Patrick Wayne Swayze - August 18, 1952 – September 14, 2009 - was an American actor, dancer, and singer-songwriter. Having gained fame with appearances in films during the 1980s, Swayze became popular for playing tough guys and romantic lead males, gaining him a wide fan base with female audiences, and status as a teen idol and sex symbol. Patrick was born on August 18, 1952, in Houston, Texas, the second child of Patsy Swayze (née Karnes; 1927–2013), a choreographer, dance instructor, and dancer, and Jesse Wayne Swayze (1925–1982), an engineering draftsman. He had two younger brothers, actor Don (born 1958) and Sean Kyle (born 1962), and two sisters, Vickie Lynn (1949–1994) and Bambi. Swayze and his siblings were raised in their mother's Roman Catholic faith. Swayze was married to Lisa Niemi for 34 years beginning on June 12, 1975. The couple met in 1970, when Swayze was 18 years old. Niemi, 14 years old at the time, was taking dance lessons from Swayze's mother. Swayze and Niemi had no children. In a 2008 interview, Swayze stated that Niemi was the inspiration for his hit song, "She's Like the Wind" (1987). In late December 2007, just after filming the pilot episode for The Beast, Swayze began to suffer a burning feeling in his stomach caused by a blockage of his bile ducts. Three weeks later, in mid-January 2008, he was diagnosed with stage IV pancreatic cancer. He traveled to the Stanford University Medical Center for chemotherapy and treatment with the experimental drug, vatalanib, which doctors hoped would cut off the blood supply to the tumor. On March 5, 2008, a Reuters article reported that Swayze "has a very limited amount of disease, and he appears to be responding well to treatment thus far." Swayze's doctor confirmed that the actor was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer but insisted he was not as close to death as reports suggested. Despite repeated tabloid claims that his death was imminent, Swayze continued to actively pursue his career. In early May 2008, it was widely reported in a number of tabloids that Swayze underwent surgery to remove part of his stomach after the cancer spread and rewrote his will, transferring his property to his wife. In a statement made on May 28, Swayze said he continued to respond well to treatment at Stanford University Medical Center. In late May 2008, he was seen at a Los Angeles Lakers basketball game, his first public appearance since his diagnosis. Swayze died, with family at his side, on September 14, 2009, at age 57, twenty months after being diagnosed. Swayze's publicist confirmed to CNN that he had died of pancreatic cancer. His body was cremated, and his ashes scattered over his New Mexico ranch. Patrick Swayze Documentary 2017 RIP PATRICK SWAYZE.

10 Early Signs and Symptoms of Pancreatic Cancer You Should Know

07:54
Signs and Symptoms Of Pancreatic Cancer Like, Comment, Subscribe and invite all your friends to see our videos. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCUOF1_1_fY50PVN0TtItbDQ?sub_confirmation=1 1. Diabetes, especially if it comes on suddenly. 2. Yellowing of the eyes or skin. Even a small pancreatic tumor can block the bile duct in the head of the pancreas, causing bile to build up. This causes jaundice. 3. Itchy skin, palms, and soles of feet. A little-known side-effect of jaundice is itchy hands and feet. It's due to a skin reaction to the bilirubin, the yellowish brown liver chemical that causes jaundice. 4. Lack of appetite. An Italian study found that six to eight months before being diagnosed with pancreatic tumors, patients reported a sudden drop in their appetite and a tendency to feel full after eating very little. 5. Changes in taste. In the same Italian study, some of the patients surveyed said they'd suddenly lost their taste for coffee, wine, and smoking. In fact, they said, they felt "disgust" for the smell and taste of coffee and alcohol. 6. Abdominal pain. Pancreatic cancer sufferers remember this pain as a gnawing pain, rather than a sharp cramp or ache, and it radiates toward the back. A characteristic clue: the pain goes away when you lean forward. 7. 8. 9. Dark, tarry stools. Bleeding in the upper intestines causes this symptom. 10. Sudden, unexplained weight loss. Weight loss is not always, as many people mistakenly believe, a sign of advanced cancer that's spread to the liver. It can also happen because a lack of pancreatic enzymes is causing fat to pass through the body undigested. What do you do if you're worried about any of these symptoms? Document all symptoms, and report them to your doctor in as much detail as possible. If your doctor is convinced you have legitimate concerns (and remember, you may have to do some convincing), tests such as an ultrasound, a CT scan, and an endoscopy followed by a biopsy can be used to search for a pancreatic tumor. A blood test is now available for a biomarker called CA 19-9 that is released by pancreatic cancer cells. Unfortunately, by the time CA 19-9 reaches detectable levels, the cancer is usually no longer in the early stage, although the test is useful during treatment and for detecting recurrence. Another biomarker test, CEA (carcinoembryonic antigen), is also not sensitive enough to provide early diagnosis. While tragic early deaths like Steve Jobs' are the hard reality of pancreatic cancer, there are also people living productive lives thanks to an early diagnosis of pancreatic cancer. Such was the case with Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, who's still practicing after having a tiny pancreatic tumor surgically removed. Yes, she got "lucky," as she put it -- but she also got a CT scan, which is how the tumor was found. {The information provided on this channel and its videos is for general purposes only and should not be considered as professional advice. My mother died of Pancreatic cancer December 13,2008. I was 19 years old. I made this video five months ago, trying to find ways to cope with her death. The pictures are all of things that she loved, from saints, I love Lucy, to Hocus Pocus. This song by Cat Stevens was played that night by a dear friend of the family.

Selfie app 'spots early signs of pancreatic cancer' - BBC News

03:32
A team of medical clinicians and computer scientists have teamed up to create an app designed to spot early signs of pancreatic cancer. The disease, which killed Apple's co-founder Steve Jobs, is one of the hardest types of cancer to treat, but detecting and treating it early can make a big difference to survival rates. The BiliScreen app is still in development at the University of Washington but is due to be presented at a computing conference later this month.
